We ended 2019 with a $50,000 donation to the Friends of Hospice Uninsured Hospice Patient Fund of the CHRISTUS Health Foundation. This was made possible by the proceeds from the Poinsettia Ball, Holiday Card, Angel Tree and grants. With these proceeds 52 patients received 964 days of care.
Congratulations are in order for LouAnn Noll and Shary Smith for organizing and successfully completing an awesome Valentine Luncheon in February. The auction committee, Joanne Cox, Stacey Darr, Betty Ferrell, Patti King, Beverly Pace, and Kenda Willoughby with the support of the board of directors pulled off another auction that made $14,000. The raffle, with 4 items this year, made a nice profit. We are so grateful to Julian Gold for the fabulous style show. Kudos to James Glover, Bob Gurwitz and Sherri Lubianski.
Champions Fore Charity forms are in the mail and every penny donated is given back to Friends plus an additional 7percent.

President’s Pen continued We encourage you to donate generously
and quickly. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
Our Annual Spring Lecture will be at noon at the San Antonio Country Club on Tuesday, April 7. Our speaker, from the UTHSC San Antonio Barshop Institute, is Dr. Anjuli Vasquez. She has an extensive background in palliative and hospice care. Her topic is A Conversation about Hospice Benefits and Barriers. Invitations will be in the mail in a few weeks. The luncheon will have a Fiesta theme and the cost is $50 per person.
Also, mark your calendar for the Annual Spring Meeting and Party on May 14th, at the beautiful home of Beverly and Dr. Fernando Guerra. Invitations will be mailed in April.
We have been fortunate to donate $75,000 to CHRISTUS Health Foundation so far this year for the care of uninsured pa-tients. There is still a great need to raise another $100,000 so uninsured patients can continue to be cared for in a hospice environment. Many lives depend on our mission to educate and raise funds for the uninsured.
Spring is in the air and what a wonderful time to renew our spirits and open our hearts to serve those in need.
2019 POINSETTIA BALL
The 31st Poinsettia Ball, under the leadership of
Betty Ferrell and Melinda Schultz, was a delightful holiday
event that was supported by many underwriters and
donors. The honoree, The Robert Tucker Hayes
Foundation, represented by Patty and Bob Hayes, was
recognized for the large gifts given in support of the
mission of Friends of Hospice.
The Nash Hernandez Orchestra kept the guests
on their feet and on the dance floor all evening. The
band played a variety of music
from big band swing to Mexi-
can cumbias and line dancing.
Ruth Willoughby and
Diana Ridgway had delightful
centerpieces at each table that
contained peppermint and red
poinsettias with glitter
garnishes. A gift of a poinsettia
plant was given to each guest
couple or single to take home
and enjoy.
A special thank you to
the entire committee Rita Bragg, Rozana Corbo, Derrick
Dodge, Sue Dullnig, Pat Donegan, Linda Jacobs, David
Johnson, Stephanie McNeal, Lupita Medina, Jennifer
Mueller, Beverly Pace, Marlene Richter, Diana Ridgway,
Sandy Ryan, Kay Sandidge, O’Lene Stone, Mary Lou
Vielock, Janet Wernli, Barbara Williams for their hard
work.
The invitation artwork was designed and painted
by Mary Overstreet. There are copies ready for framing
that are still available for purchase at $25.
(l-r) Sandy Ryan, Melinda Schultz and Donna Gilger enjoy the Poinsettia Ball cocktail reception.
Paul and Mary Overstreet display the artwork.

Members, community members and guests of members filled the San Antonio Country Club Ball Room February 8 for the 17th annual Friends of Hospice Valentine Luncheon. The event was chaired by LouAnn Noll and Shary Smith. Net proceeds of the luncheon were more than $30,000 for uninsured hospice patients.
Kenda Willoughby and her auction stylists did an excellent job of displaying the items and bid sheets. With the hard work of Jo Marie Camero, Joanne Cox, Stacey Darr, Patti King, and Beverly Pace, the 200 plus auction items drew interest and competitive bidding. Many items sold for more than their value. The auction netted $14,000.
Underwriter Julian Gold presented the fashion show with its lush colors and silky fabrics in casual and formal wear. Friends’ members Billie Bailey, Julie Bray Patterson, Barbara Chumney, Sally Forester, Linda Jacobs, Heather
Martin, Mary Overstreet, Bonnie Reed, Jane Willenberg, Barbara Winship and Arlene Wueste were asked to model, along with professional models.
Major in-kind donors were Julian Gold, Lois Armor, Beverly Pace, Ginger Cave, Rebecca Davis, LouAnn Noll, St. Anthony Hotel, Fairmount Hotel, Meadow and Total Wine. The day of the luncheon about 30 volunteers helped greet, register guests, sell raffle tickets, assist the models, check-out donors, and clean up the auction area.
The luncheon has proven to be a favorite event of our members and their friends. Mark your calendar now for the 2021 Valentine Luncheon on Saturday, February 6.
