Eastdale CVI’s Senior Concert Band Entertains ...and this is my story — Tanya Hawthorne 2018 Educational Services Staff Award Winner The Educational Services Staff Award recognizes a staff member/team affiliate with CUPE, consisting of office-technical staff, custodial and maintenance staff, and educational assistants. The recipients of this award have made an exceptional contribution to the support of students, schools or the growth of others in the board. The 2017/2018 award winner is Bill Houlden. He was nominated for his work at Dr. S.J Phillips. Houlden is always accommodating, has a great work ethic and can be depended upon to help with school events and problem solve when necessary. 2018 Educational Services Staff Award WinnerThe Educational Services Staff Award recognizes a staff member/team affiliate with CUPE, consisting of office-technical staff, custodial and maintenance staff, and educational assistants. The recipients of this award have made an exceptional contribution to the support of students, schools or the growth of others in the board.

The 2017/2018 award winner is Bill Houlden.

This month’s installment of the …and This Is My Story video series, features Tanya Hawthorne. It made its public debut at this month’s Board meeting. It’s another fascinating look into the rich and diverse back story of DDSB staff.

DDSB Specialist High Skills Major ProgramsSuperintendent Anne Marie Laginski and Superintendent Silvia Peterson introduced Student Success Lead Education Officer Student Achievement & Curriculum 7-12 Centres for Success Principal Kim Stuart; Program Facilitator,Student Achievement & Staff Development Specialist High Skills Major Jennifer Parrington; SHSM teacher at Uxbridge Secondary School David Brown; and SHSM student from Uxbridge Secondary School Carleigh Higgins. They presented their report about DDSB’s Specialist High Skills Major Program (SHSM) Policy and Implementation Guide. They explained how the program helps students from across Ontario to have apprenticeship opportunities, and gain sector-specific skills, knowledge and training while still pursing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. They shared that students enrolled in the SHSM program are very successful in the program and at provincial skills competitions. DDSB completions rates are 62%, while the provincial average is 49%. DDSB is proud of the students’ achievements.

Treaties Recognition WeekTreaties Recognition Week is the first week of November every year across Ontario. It honours the importance of treaties and is an opportunity for everyone to learn about treaty rights and relationships.

Bobby Henry from the Cayuga Nation and Jessica Parks from the Mohawk Nation presented a Two Row Wampum Belt to the Board and explained how it represents the treaties that are still in place today. Students from Williamsburg PS, Rameen, Ovia, and Mishaal also shared what they have learned about the importance of the treaties and Indigenous culture.

Treaties Recognition Week initiatives provide an opportunity for educators to engage in learning that will support them with the creation of age-appropriate lessons for the classroom.

Financial Process and 2017-2018 Financial ReportIt is recommended that the 2017-2018 Financial Report of Durham District School Board including transfers to and from internally restricted funds be approved as presented.

Revisions to Regulation #7551 – Naming of SchoolsIt is recommended that Regulation #7551 – Naming of Schools be revised as reflected in Appendix B of the report.

Revisions to Regulations #1305 – Accessible Customer ServiceIt is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the revisions to Regulation #1305 – Accessible Customer Service.

Transfer and PromotionsThe Durham District School Board believes that school leaders are pivotal to the development of excellent teaching, excellent schools and ultimately enhanced student achievement and well-being. As an employer, we are committed to being responsive and adaptable to ongoing requests from school leaders related to retirements, resignations, and leaves of absence. Chair’s Annual Report

Chair Micheal Barrett summarized the great work and initiatives that were accomplished within the Board. During the most recent 4-year team he thanked the Board of Trustees, the Senior Team, Principals, Vice Principals, Teachers and DDSB staff for their support to actively Ignite Learning in schools. Chair Barrett also thanked the Trustees for their dedication and support not only throughout this past year, but during their entire term. He recognized those who will not be returning to the Board for another term, Trustee Linda Lowery, Trustee Gordon Baxter, Trustee Kimberly Zeppieri, Trustee Linda Stone and Trustee Christine Winters-Feret. He also gave a special thank you to Superintendent Camille Williams-Taylor who will be moving on to be the Director of Education at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.
