Mission high School FFA Member Julissa Alvarez has been selected to service as a Youth Health Ambassador as part of the Healthy South Texas initiative. Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service, in partnership with the Texas A&M Health Science Center, has had the opportunity to work on a new health initiative called Healthy South Texas. The purpose of this health initiative is to reduce diabetes, asthma, and other preventable diseases in a 27 county area in South Texas by providing health and nutrition education. As a Youth Health Ambassador, Julissa will be trained in health and nutrition topics related to the Healthy South Texas Initiative. Once the training is complete, the Youth Health Ambassadors will help educate the community in the topics of which they have been trained. This is a wonderful leadership opportunity for students that are interested in entering the health field, but also, would be a great addition to their résumé.
