August was interesting. Especially if you’re a Sussex cricketer caught short on the seafront, or a local MP having her countryside excursion rudely interrupted, or a skater involved in a mass brawl at the new skatepark.

In reality it’s been a great month, we’ve had Brighton Pride reminding us how great this City is, hundreds enjoying Brunswick Festival and BHAFC finally got their season started, so the negative news isn’t getting us down.

So here’s September’s issue of BN1 Magazine… and it’s hotter than a burning squat.

SEPTEMBERSeptember could be set to rival May as the month for festivals. Shakedown and SD2 are bringing the best in Pop and Dance to the leafy climes of Stamner Park this month (make sure you enter our competition to win free tickets In this issue!), Brighton Digital Festival will be showcasing the very best in new-media art, Brighton Japan Festival’s bringing a taste of the far east to the city for ten days, and just outside Brighton Over The Moon Festival is rocking the countryside.

This month, the rest of The Level should reopen, allowing visitors to sample all of the fruits of its £2.2 million redevelopment. Now if that’s wasn’t enough local excitement for you , then children’s entertainment heavyweights Bodger And Badger are seemingly back in the game, in a new Youtube feature, where Badger becomes the unwitting victim of the UK’s controversial badger cull.

Further adding to the esoteric and freethinking nature of Brighton, is the City’s first ever atheist church assembly on Sun 22 at St Andrew’s Church in Hove, featuring lively songs, guest speakers, a house band, tea and cake and no mention of God. It’s even been thoughtfully scheduled for an 11am start, meaning that all but the sorest heads will be able to attend.

Spirituality aside, for this month issue we’ve had a chat with Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie, on the day his new solo album was released, look at an upcoming exhibition by ground-breaking digital artist William Latham and look forwards to the tongue-scorching return of the Fiery Foods UK Chilli Festival for 2013.

We’ll also take a sneak peek at October’s Brighton Comedy Festival, as well as all the usual Music, Theatre and Comedy previews, nicely topped off with the best listing section in the City.

OVER THE MOON FESTIVALHailsham // 13 - 15 Sept

Last issue’s feature-stars play this great little festival with the emphasis firmly on fun. A few local bands should provide highlights, including The Physics House Band and AKDK, but I will guess that most people will be here to get down to the headliners, The Freestylers. But as with all festivals it’s not just about the music and this festival has plenty of other things to keep you occupied if you don’t want to watch the music.

BY BRAD MIDDLETON

MERCHANDISE The Haunt // Fri 6 Sept

By my standards, as they only formed in 2008, a new band who are creating a real buzz about now after last year’s Children of Desire album won them some prominent fans. With a musical styling comprising punk, noise and pop Carson Cox, David Vassalotti and Patrick Brady even find it hard to describe their interesting sound. Hailing from Tampa, Florida I think this is their second visit to the UK so get along now whilst they are still playing smaller venues like The Haunt and get bragging rights on all your friends when they get huge!

CRAYOLA LECTERN

September is here and we’ve got a few great shows happening in town and a festival not that far away so best get on and tell you what we think are the gigs of the upcoming month.

THE TELESCOPES & CRAYOLA LECTERNSticky Mike’s Frog Bar // Sat 28 Sept

Crayola Lectern are a local band on Bleeding Heart Records who make interesting sound experiments without any pretentious towards the nonsense of some art/folk scene. The Telescopes however are quite simply one of the most important British bands of the twenty-first century. Forming as long ago as 1986 I was fortunate enough to see them when they were creating the feedback-laden rock which often saw them compared to the like of Spacemen 3 and the Jesus and Mary Chain. The classic song that emerged from this period was ‘To Kill A Slow Girl Walking’ which would make any serious guitar-nuts list of great British songs of its time. The last time I saw them however, some six years ago now, it was less about songs and more about the noise; the battle between band and engineer and in some cases audience. The now two-piece Telescopes set up and started a drone that seemed as if it could last forever and probably would have if the sound-man at London’s Water Rats hadn’t pulled the plug on them at curfew time. A truly mind-bending experience that took art music to a whole new level; a show that left a scorch mark on my mind which has yet to be repaired.

DEAD MEADOWThe Haunt // Mon 23 Sept

A band who met in Washington D.C. whilst attending punk all-ages shows in the mid-to-late 90s who have gone on to become one of the cities more interesting outfits. Their sound takes tips from classic rock/psychedelia of Black Sabbath and early Pink Floyd whilst the lyrics pay homage to the weird fantasy tales written by HP Lovecraft and JRR Tolkein. Their first release came in 1999 and over the coming decade their profile grew with supports slots for great DC band The Make-Up and sleazy psychers Brian Jonestown Massacre. Loved here, before his untimely passing, by John Peel who backed their early records whilst also offering the band a session on his show they are now at the top of their powers. In 2003 they jumped ship to Matador and have over the last ten years produced some of the best rock music around.

WIREKomedia // Mon 23 Sept

Quite simply one of the most influential of all the British bands who came screaming out of the punk ghetto in 1977. They however continued to evolve and were one of the first bands to attack punk with a minimalist approach thus paving the way for the likes of Big Black, the Minutemen, et al. What’s more they have continued to work pretty much uninterrupted right up to the present with new album Change Becomes Us being released earlier this year. ‘Pink Flag’ is their seminal release but all periods, bar possibly a brief mistaken period in the early 90s, are worth investigating if you are new to this band. If so, get stuck in, listen with open ears and go and have your mind blown at Komedia on the 23rd!

THE WAVE PICTURES The haunt // Sat 28 Sept

A special band for our time; forming in the late 90s in rural Leicestershire they took an amateurish approach to their music, concentrating on school and then university whilst only occasionally meeting up to record or play shows with the likes of Jeffrey Lewis and the Mountain Goats whilst selling home-recorded DIY CD’s at these shows. It wasn’t until their studies were complete and they had moved to London in 2006 that things took a turn towards more professional approach. Signing to Moshi Moshi records they have subsequently released some of the best records of the last seven years, my particular favourite being Instant Coffee Baby which somehow slams together the whimsy of the Smiths with the power and weirdness of the Pixies. Indeed a rare band.

If you’d released your third solo album, there’s possibly better things you can be doing on a Monday morning, like nipping down to your local record store to check it’s hit the shelves. No such luck for Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie, instead he’s found himself conducting phone interviews with journalists from all over the country.“Anyway, inevitably you do that and it’s not fucking there. But I might gingerly edge into Fop and start fingering the racks later!”

His new album, Lower Reaches, is a follow up to the critically acclaimed, What Is Love For in 2008, and 2010’s The Great War in 2010, but is the title an ironic sideswipe at anything?“You don’t want anything too specific with an album title, you don’t want to nail the album down to one thing“As one of the country’s best songwriters with a string of hit singles in the 80s and 90s, Currie has seen a few things and learnt a few lessons about songwriting.“Writers take things from their lives, you can describe things as having autobiographical elements, but they’re not autobiographical. I write them and release and hope there’s some sort of universality to them, or hoping they connect with people out there that understand where the songs coming from. If I didn’t think that I wouldn’t really bother. I don’t think something being personal isn’t a virtue, it’s just a starting point for starting a conversation with the audience.”

Written in the isolation of the Scottish islands, and then recorded in the US with acclaimed producer Mike McCarthy, the new album encapsulates the intimacy of Justin’s solo offerings Stand out track, Lower Reaches is an assortment of razor sharp observations, although the core of the album could be described as downbeat, Bend To My Will and I Hate Myself For Loving You, gleefully take on familiar chart-worrying resonance. But its Every Song’s The Same, that catches your attention. It’s less of an attack on

homogenous Tween-Pop, as a hearty celebration of the repeating themes that surge through the best songs throughout musical history.“Generally you’re in quite a good mood when you’re writing songs because it’s so distracting, all you’re thinking about is the next line or chord. You try to find interesting ways of writing about the same old subjects, like love and loneliness and confusion.

“There are only so many themes you can work with. You can write about not being able to find a parking space. It’s just trying to get an angle on these things, if it ends up being dark, then so be it.”

This is a production that oozes confidence, both in keying in with emotions the listener can identify with and layering these lyrics with understated, but edifying soundscapes. There’s a spacious Country feel to these songs. So there’s little surprise the album was recorded amongst the ultra-trendy music scene in Austin, Texas, using a fair few of the city’s finest players and a (somewhat crappy) old drum machine. But it seems Currie hasn’t discovered a new spiritual home.“Austin is nothing to do with the rest of Texas. It’s a bastion of liberalism and being achingly hip, it’s full of beatniks, poets and hipsters. As soon as you cross those city limits you’re in serious Republican country. I don’t identify with either of those two states of mind.

Throughout Lower Reaches’ assembled songs, there rises a theme of self-realisation and contemplation, so taking into account he’s been in the industry since the 80’s, I cheekily quip that Currie could be facing a midlife crisis of sorts.“I don’t think so, but I did buy a leather jacket five years ago, I’d never worn one before. I bought a stupid little hatchback, it’s not a sports car, but it does go really quickly. I could have bought an economic car, but I didn’t, so maybe I’ve had my midlife crisis and now I’m easing into my dotage.”

This habit of self-deprecation should be familiar for anyone that’s encountered Currie or his work before, but rather than being simple pathos, it seems there’s a real edge of awareness, both in himself and the world around him, in his approach to everything he does. Just taking a look at his quip-packed website reveals a certain sardonic attitude to the world and the business he remains in, after so many years.“It’s like an anti-website. I don’t really like website. When I set it up I looked at a lot of other artists’ sites, they just looked big fucking adverts. I’m just trying to make it a little less in your face.”

Justin’s album Lower Reaches is out right now. He plays Brighton’s Komedia on Mon 9 Sept.www.justincurrie.com

Ever growing, evolving and adapting to music trends, Shakedown has sealed their reputation as Brighton’s biggest festival. They’re back on Sat 28 Sept, to once again deliver an outstanding line-up featuring the most vital names in electronic music.

This mammoth Electronic Music session features 11 hours of tuneage in the historic surroundings of Stanmer Park. It’ll certainly be a triumphant homecoming show for Brighton rapscallions Rizzle Kicks, who’ll be smashing it with tracks from their brand new album Roaring 20’s. Joking them on the Main Stage will be Urban superstar Labrinth, DJ Fresh’s utterly incredible FreshLive show and Soulful song-smith Maverick Sabre. We’ll be making an effort to check the divine vocals of Delilah, and the frenetic DJ skills of Jaguar Skills on this stage.

This year sees the addition of a third stage, a brand new House arena, hosted by those trendsetters at Audio. Annie Mac, Kerri Chandler, Toddla T, MK and Hot Since 82 will be supplying the very best House and Future Bass to an appreciative crowd.

The Supercharged Arena returns again, crammed full of the very best Drum and Bass, Dubstep and Electro House. Dubstep pioneers, Nero top a bill that features Bass music superstar Sub Focus, Radio 1’s new-music legend Zane Lowe and a much anticipated 4 hour takeover from Drum and Bass dons RAM Records. Also popping up are local faves Krafty Kuts and A.Skillz. But make sure you catch the 203 return for Bass producer Jacob Plant, he’s going to bring the house down this year.If this wasn’t enough top music entertainment for you, then on Sun 29 Sept some of the UK’s biggest Pop acts head down to Stamner Park for SD2, and another day of action-packed festivities. The chart-smashing The Wanted, Pop princesses The Saturdays and some local superstar called Connor Maynard, are just three of the massive names appearing at brand new one-day festival: SD2, when it livens up Stanmer Park.

There are a few stars of tomorrow on this year’s bill too. Guitar band The Vamps have accumulated 160,000 Twitter followers and on YouTube over 17 million views, all without actually releasing a single. Fellow YouTube star Hobbie Stuart has been gathering quite a few fans recently too, which just shows the power that social media has over the Music industry. Rising star A*M*E could be one to watch. Her insanely catchy single Need U (100%), with Duke Dumont and MNEK, reached number one in the charts earlier this year. This should be essential viewing for anyone that missed her show at Pride last month.

Two massive days of music… loads of great artists and thousands of smiling happy people (possibly because the organisers provide enough toilets) in one of the most beautiful locations on the South Coast… and not a campsite or smelly bonfire in sight. This could well be perfect. Shakedown and SD2 will be ending 2013’s festival season with a bang

dapper disco mavericks Transformer, who offer a twisted new-wave disco work-out with catchy riffs full of energy. As well as Music, a mainstay of the festival is Circus, jaw dropping shows and opportunities to learn with the performers will combine to create an incredible live performance vibe. Look out for Shambolic Sideshow’s ever innovative displays, a wild collection of clowns, acrobats and walkabout performers centred around Over The Moon’s brand new Circus big top.The Poi Passion Troupe use a wide variety of different fire toys in their jaw dropping displays, even fireworks are included in their repertoire. Traditionally from New Zealand, Poi has roots in a Maori martial art and dance form, passed down through the generations and still continuing today.

Shambolic Sideshow bring young and not so young together by playing at Circus Skills during the day with workshops in the aerial arts, Silks and Rope classes, Trapeze, Hula Hoop, Club Juggling and Passing, Staff Pinning and Manipulation, Diablo, Unicycling and Tightrope. In the evening they transform themselves into the enchanting band of vagabond performers that they are, presenting a small variety of

Cabaret and Confused Theatre. In addition you can expect to find a variety of clowns, walkabout acts, theatrical performances and interactive installations dotted around all over the festival site.

Exploring the theme of participation, there will be opportunities to take Music lessons, Bush-Craft, Stone-Carving, Blacksmithing and Wood Turning workshops, Yoga, Tai-Chi and Reiki classes, or to get involved in flash mob art installations. A LITTLE NONSENCEUpstairs at Three & Ten // Fri 20 - Sat 21 Sept

Why not enjoy clowning about with A Little Nonsense, on Fri 20 – Sat 21 Sept, at Upstairs at Three and Ten? After sellout shows at Brighton Fringe, Juncture Theatre returns with their original black comedy, which explores the clown inside the man and the mirth hidden in the melancholy. Bitterly frustrated by a Clown’s freedom to play and inability to take life seriously, a man has taken it upon himself to teach this Clown a lesson. Through mime, slapstick, poetry and farce this off-beat physical comedy follows a tortured double-act as they walk the tightrope between love and loathing.

FRANCESCA MARTINEZKomedia // Sun 29 Sept

Fresh from winning a Fringe Media Network Award at the Edinburgh Festival, ‘wobbly’ comedian, Francesca Martinez, brings her hit show to Brighton’s Komedia on Sun 29 Sept. What The **** Is Normal?! examines what happens when you’re branded ‘abnormal’, in a world obsessed with normality? This candid show is Francesca’s defiant, insightful and fascinating answer...Whatever body you’re born into, it seems that most people share the universal desire to be ‘normal’. This preconception-changing show is for anyone who’s ever struggled to fit in, felt different or struggled with what normal actually means.

ARDAL O’HANLONTheatre Royal // Sun 15 Sept

Father Ted star, Ardal O’Hanlon, comes to Theatre Royal on Sun 15 Sept, with his latest stand-up show for 2013. Lurking beneath Ardal’s mild-mannered demeanour resides a sharp and probing comic brain. Sometimes thoughtful, sometimes silly, but always punchy, he has tickled audiences all over the world. In a comprehensive set, he talks about not just the things that matter, but also about a lot of things that don’t. The style is observational, the subject matter is life itself, and the default expression is utter disbelief. Look out for him in new Channel 4 comedy, London Irish, later this year.

MUCH A-STEW ABOUT NOTHINGBrighton Dome // Thu 19 - Fri 20 Sept

Stewart Lee presents Much A-Stew About Nothing, on Thu 19 - Fri 20 Sept, at the Dome. The country’s supreme quietly-fuming comedy star is back after the sell-out Carpet Remnant World, and a three-month residency at Leicester Square Theatre. Much-a-Stew About Nothing sees him testing a stew of unrelated ideas in preparation for his 2014 TV series. See it live so you can begin the backlash ahead of transmission. He might appear too pompous and excessively intellectual for the more unrefined comedy palette, but when this chaps gets into his stride there are few comedians who can match him.

Brighton Comedy Festival returns, on Fri 4 – Sun 20 Oct, for a twelfth year and the line-up is better than ever. Now a firm fixture on the City’s calendar, the festival sets out to bring the best live Comedy of the year to the seaside, with over 70 side-splitting performances.

In addition to their well-established hub at Brighton Dome, the festival will once again be returning to The Old Market, and working in partnership with Komedia’s legendary Krater Comedy Club.

Not content with bringing the cream of British Stand-Up Comedy to Brighton, the festival will be unveiling the next generation of comic talent. To further celebrate this new wave of talent, for 2013 the festival will present the inaugural Squawker Award. So why don’t we have a look at some of the hidden treats they’ve got to offer?

Abandoman: Moonrock Boombox, on Thu 17 Oct at Brighton Dome Studio, cuts a truly original path between Rap Music and Comedy. Now performing as a full band, they’ll use the history of Hip-Hop as their blueprint, and you as their inspiration. From Kanye to Jay Z, from Country to Funk, this show will contain musical, lyrical and comical scenes of a seriously awesome nature.

Alex Horne: Lies, on Fri 11 Oct at Dome Studio, sees the 30 year old multi-Bafta award-winning stand up and platinum-selling R&B artist (and shameless liar…) Alex Horne returns with an hour of observations and impressions and maybe some lies. Best known for mind-blowing Powerpoint or live music, this show has neither. It’s just Alex, a panda, some jokes and some lies. Believe what you will.

The king of angry polemic Stand-Up, Alexei Sayle, hits Corn Exchange on Fri 11 Oct. This goliath of alternative comedy returns for a good (and sometime surreal) shout about everything that annoys him. We’d like to think he’ll show how his Dairylea advert voiceovers can exist alongside his Marxist principles. Despite this, he’s still one of the most intelligent and entertaining performers this country’s produced.

Ava Vidal’s kids won’t be getting an easy time of it, on Sat 5 Oct at the Dome’s Studio. Once again their mum will be grabbing some laughs at their expense. An often breath-taking performer, she’s able to switch pacing almost at will, wowing audience with some irreverent and awkward stories of her home life. She’s got plenty to say, there’s no doubt about that.

Rapper turned comedian Doc Brown, will be at Corn Exchange on Sat 12 Oct, with a unique take on hip hop culture. It seems there’s a lot to laugh about in the glamorous world of UK Hip Hop, and his show: Of Mic and Men, promises a small insight into some crazy goings on.

Radio 4 stalwart, Jeremy Hardy, comes to Corn Exchange on Fri 6 Oct. A consistently thoughtful and thought-provoking performer, he’s adept at finding fresh angles on well-worn comedy themes. The antics of the coalition government must be providing a rich vein of material for him right now.

Lastly, Hannah Gadsby : Happiness is a Bedside Table, on Thu 10 Oct at Komedia Studio Bar, caught our attention. Simply for the warning: “Contains imagined nudity and metaphorical nakedness” attached her show. It seems Australian Hannah has written a new show about the lowest point in her life (thus far) and how she eventually found happiness in a piece of furniture.

So there’s a few shows for you to consider. Next month we’ll be featuring plenty more promising shows and interviews with some of their stars in our Comedy Festival special. If you can’t wait that long, then check out:

BRIGHTON JAPAN

FESTIVAL

Brighton Japan Festival returns for a fifth year this September, bigger and better than ever. This city-wide celebration of Japanese culture takes place in some of Brighton’s most prestigious venues, and aims to bring both traditional and modern Japanese Art and Cultureto Brighton, from taiko drumming and beautiful theatre, to the cutting-edge sub-culture of Gothic Lolita fashion and Cosplay. So lets take a look at a just a small sample of what’s on offer this year…

On Sun 8, at the Festival’s pop-up venue Japan City in Old Steine Gardens, whisky expert Dave Broom will be inviting you to try some of the best whiskies produced on the planet, matching each with a tasting menu specially created by MOSHIMO’s chefs.

Cinema plays a big part in Japanese culture, so what else are you going to do on Fri 13 in Old Steine Gardens? Brighton Japan will be presenting two of the most notorious horror films ever made: Takashi Miike’s haunting Audition, and a brand new digitally re-mastered version of the late 80’s cult classic, Tsukamoto’s Tetsuo (The Iron Man).

There’s a High Culture Night, on Mon 16, at Japan City. This Supper Club evening, steeped in the best of Japanese high culture, brings together classical and traditional Japanese music, work from one of the most famous calligraphy artists in Japan, a rare Cherry Blossom tea brought over especially for the event and a five course menu created for the evening by Brighton’s MOSHIMO restaurant.

Old Steine Gardens will be transformed into a digital playground on the Tues 17 Sept, when Brighton Japan Festival and the Brighton Digital Festival join forces to create Digital Playground, a platform for the digital creators and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Games and tech developers get a chance to discuss business opportunities in digital media and even pitch for investment to some of the most famous names in the industry, including Ian Livingstone, Bill Liao and Fred Hasson.

Fri 20 offers something for all the family in the wonderful ambience of the Old Steine Gardens. Two favourite Studio Ghibli films: Ponyo, and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away.

Sat 21 – Sun 22 Sept sees the Matsuri Weekend. Only five years ago, a small one-day Matsuri festival took place in front of Brighton’s MOSHIMO restaurant in Bartholomew Square. This big-hearted celebration of all things Japanese has something for everyone to enjoy. Taiko drumming, Japanese Rock, Geisha and Sumo on stilts, traditional Okinawan dancers, Shakuhachi and Shamisen players and Enka singers, Kimono dressing workshops, Origami classes, and traditional Japanese children’s games. All of it gathered round the best Japanese street food and drink you could ever hope for.

Sun 22 also sees theatre group A Thousand Cranes bring their delightful show, Tales from Old Japan, down to Brighton Dome Studio Theatre. Three enchanting Japanese stories are brought to life through Puppetry and Music. Wonder at magnificent Mount Iwate (which blew hot and cold!), the humble woodcutter and his beautiful, but strange, bride and the snorting, burping Ogre of Rashomon Gate.

FILMA CRITIC ON THE COAST: AMY SIMMONS

By Wayne Imms

Amy Simmons is a Brighton-based film critic and a freelance writer. She graduated from Middlesex University six years ago with a First Class Honours in Film Studies. Since then Amy has worked largely as a reviewer. She has reviewed films for Time Out London, the British Film Institute’s renowned Sight &Sound magazine, and Little White Lies. She is currently writing a book on controversial director Lars von Trier’s Antichrist for Auteur Publishing’s Devil’s Advocates series. Like me, Amy recognises the significance of the 70s for the film landscape and we share a fondness for some of the decade’s classic horrors.

What springs to mind as a particularly memorable early cinema-going experience?

As a child, the unforeseen killing of Bambi’s mother was traumatic enough, but the overwhelming experience of watching Spielberg’s E.T. at the cinema in 1982 left me emotionally shattered. It’s a beautifully crafted story about childhood, loneliness and growing up. The atmosphere and nostalgia it evokes is almost indescribably beautiful and after thirty years it is still an exciting and deeply moving masterpiece. It’s a testament to the absolute magic of cinema.

When and why did you decide to become a film critic?

I became seriously interested in film criticism during my Film Studies degree at Middlesex University in 2004. I was fortunate enough to have a teacher who encouraged my writing and advised me to contact various publications. After spending six invaluable months studying journalism in New York, I came back to London and embarked on an internship at Time Out. Through sheer dogged persistence I finally got the opportunity to review for their DVD film section in 2007.

In your view, what makes a good film critic, and what is a decent review really supposed to do?

A good film critic should have a general understanding about the history of film and the art of filmmaking. Typically, criticism is understood as a means of description, interpretation, and evaluation, what a film is, what it means, and whether it is worth it. I think it’s essential to develop a voice and be passionate about your opinions, but it’s also important to hone critical skills, so that your own judgment is as organised and coherent as possible. Writers should always write to illuminate, not to confuse.

What’s the best part of being a film critic – and the worst?

Having spent years watching and learning about films, I get immense joy from turning people on to a good movie they might not have seen. I like to feel that critics are in the business of sorting through everything to find the films that are truly special. To watch movies is to try and comprehend the world around us, and if people get interested in my reflections it makes me even happier. On the down side, you would be surprised to learn how little film criticism pays. Most critics have another part-time or full-time job. Those who manage to make film writing their sole occupation often scrape to get by, but, in my experience, most critics are far more interested in gaining kudos over financial reward.

There’s a saying that music critics are failed musicians. Could that also apply to film critics?

Personally, I can say without fear of contradiction, that this is the job I wanted. Perhaps one day I will get to finish the feeble screenplay I’ve written, but I do not fancy myself as a screenwriter or director. They have their skill sets and I have mine.

Page 29: BN1 MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER EDITION 2013

BN1MAGAZINE.CO.UK [ 29 ]

Do you have a favourite film or a favourite genre?

It’s impossible for me to pick a favourite film, but as a horror movie buff and a fan of the genre, I would say that Jaws, Carrie, Halloween, The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre stand out as seminal masterpieces. For me, the 70s was the decade that re-defined film-making and set benchmarks that are still adhered to today.

Describe your passion for film. For you, what makes it such a powerful medium?

Film has been a constant in my life but the passion was ignited at university, where I was exposed to areas of cinema that I had never before fully appreciated. I immersed myself in avant-garde and experimental films and the revolutionary movements of Italian Neo-Realism and the French New Wave. I also discovered that it wasn’t enough for me to simply watch films; I needed to write about them. Despite the beating cinema has taken from the pursuit of technology in recent years, I feel that film will always retain some of its sublime power, if held in the right creative hands.

Sum up what makes Brighton special for people like you, with an interest in film.

Brighton is a fantastic location for film enthusiasts. The Duke of York’s, the oldest operating cinema in Britain, regularly screens art-house, independent, foreign language, cult and classic films. Brighton also has its own annual film festival, Cine-City, which celebrates film every October, and a great horror film festival, Frighten Brighton, which takes place in August. I also had the great pleasure

of watching Jaws on a magnificent 100 square ft screen on the beach last summer. For me, Brighton is an exceptional place which feeds creativity, and residents support the arts in a way that other cities frantically try to imitate, but rarely succeed at.

BRIGHTON DIGITAL FESTIVAL

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT

Brighton Digital Festival will present a specially created Charity Chuckle stand-up comedy night. Award nominee David Trent, TV personality Nathan Penlington, Joseph Morpurgo and Phil Lucas will marry comedy with digital at the Komedia on 10 September.

Leading writers, producers and presenters arriving this September also include broadcaster, satirist and journalist Charlie Brooker, who will talk at the Komedia Duke of York’s following an exclusive screening of Black Mirror. New this year is The Rise and Fall Of Geo Goynes, an outdoor, interactive event from Root Experience that combines digital technology and theatre. Members of the public will be guided on a journey across the city for the ultimate real life gaming experience. The games start at The Old Market and will be held on 28 and 29 September.

Shlomo, the world record-holding beatboxer who has worked with the likes of Björk, Damon Albarn and Jarvis Cocker, will explore the art and science of geekdom, gadgets and the music of the human voice at The Brighton Dome on 27 September in Shlomo: Human Geekbox. The returning Faulty Sound & AV Night offers a relaxed and intriguing selection of performances from local and international musicians and AV artists who use digital technology to explore sound and visuals in their live performances. This free to enter event will be held at Mrs Fitzherberts on 9 September.

Throughout the month of September the Brighton Digital Festival, a diverse celebration of digital culture, takes over the city with 140 events and more than 25,000 visitors. This year’s eclectic programme promises something for all interests, from cutting edge art installations to 48-hour hackathons. Here’s a sneak peak at some of this year’s highlights.

BRIGHTON DIGITAL FESTIVAL

ART AND LITERARY EXHIBITIONS

Brighton Digital Festival 2013 also offers an extensive (and mostly free) exhibition programme including pioneering digital artist William Latham and his Mutator 1 + 2 exhibition at Phoenix Brighton from 7 September. Internationally renowned artist Timo Arnall will also reveal the invisible infrastructure making up our technological world in Immaterials from 5 September at Lighthouse.

Brighton Digital Festival will host another internationally renowned (Brighton based) artist Simon Wilkinson and his atmospheric live AV performance in The Sound of the Wind in the Trees at The Old Market on 5 September, followed by an artist Q&A.

The show features haunting large screen projections and a live soundtrack built around a collection of poignant micro-interviews with people from earlier generations about how they make sense of our common human predicament: that we are standing on a ball which is floating through space and we don’t know why. This version will feature contributions from several Brighton and Hove residents. TECH-TASTIC

True to its name, Brighton Digital Festival also has much to offer the city’s tech-lovers, including the DigBig Data Storytelling: The Global Financial Crisis & Recovery hackathon. This event will feature a group of artists, software developers and data scientists coming together for a 48-hour hackathon to try and shed some light on the global financial crisis and the recession that it caused.

Participants will be asked to use digital and physical graphics and art to publically display their findings on 21 September at the University of Brighton Grand Parade Gallery.

For more information on all events throughout September and the full Brighton Digital Festival programme, go to www.brightondigitalfestival.co.uk.

A visit to the residence of a ground-breaking computer artist encourages your imagination to run wild. We expected William Latham’s home to be a hi-tech environment, possibly filled with banks of computer screens, hastily scribbled notes concerning world domination or a robotic housemaid catering for his every need.

The reality was a normal home in a quiet Hove side street, albeit one filled with incredible computer-generated images, our host having to make drinks for us without an automaton’s aiding, whilst watching out for the arrival of an AA man.In 1987 Latham started working for IBM in their Advanced Computer Graphics and Visualisation Division, where he started collaborating with mathematician Stephen Todd, to develop computer code that mutated and evolved simple forms. “They had a group of people that included molecular scientists, archaeologists and heart surgeons, in fact they did the first renderings of the human heart,” he tells us. “It was a mixture, like a renaissance situation, bringing people together with different disciplines and IBM programmers to work with them.”

The fruit of this project was Latham’s Mutator code, a program which imitates the evolutionary process. It literally breeds three-dimensional shapes, based upon the instruction of the user. “The software was pretty rudimental. There were no PC’s, Photoshop was just emerging, but in terms of doing graphics there was nothing you could really use.”What Latham had created was carefully ordered surrealist art. In a virtual life laboratory he controlled a replica natural world, generating unique hybrid forms, the finished images looking much like alien plant forms, or exotic viruses. The emergence of the Zippies, a new cultural movement that embraced emerging technology, communication and electronic music, meant that Latham’s output had an eager and knowledgeable audience in the Nineties. His art was exhibited extensively throughout the Rave scene, and Techno-popsters The Shamen, who themselves eventually developed a computer process that converted human DNA prints into music, featured his art on record sleeves. “I always tried to position myself where the most interesting stuff was happening.”

Now the best of his work, from the last three decades, is about to be displayed at Phoenix Gallery, as part of the Brighton Digital Festival. This establishment is a hub for the City’s ground breaking artists, and provides a fitting venue for a show as leftfield as Latham’s.

To link together his work Latham has created a large scale Retro-Form Synth drawing directly on the gallery’s walls. For those wishing to delve deeper into mixing the technological and the organic, there’s workshops, talks and film screenings to inspire any budding cyber-artist.

His approach to art clearly changes the nature of the artist’s contribution. Here technical ability isn’t as important as a clear understanding of the aesthetic experience. The closer you look at them, the more you notice the incredible detail and patterns that form the images. These aren’t just random swathes of colour… these forms really have been grown. The more vociferous of Latham’s critics argue that his creations are simply corporate-sponsored random computer graphics, implying that he’s betrayed his conventional Fine Art training. “Ultimately Fine Art is driven by something you can sell. If I can make ten million of these images, it undermines the idea of a unique image.”

Now his program has evolved itself, to work within a simple browser, enabling the home user to generate stunning images for themselves. He’s also working on a crowd-sourced puzzle game that will contribute to cracking the problems of protein folding, and creating a series of games with practical applications in Neuroscience, with the aim of delaying onset of disease like Alzheimer’s. “I think what’s finally happening is the Science community’s realising games can have benefits. The idea’s really interesting, we’re now working at the frontiers of knowledge.”

Mutator 1 + 2 is at Phoenix Brighton, on Sat 7 Sept – Sun 13 Oct, 2013

METAL MADE FLESHIt has been several months since we last spoke to the creator of the Cyberpunk Science Fiction comic series, ‘Metal Made Flesh’, back when Simeon Aston (illustrator & creator) and his colleague Jeremy Biggs (writer) were set to release the first edition. Now making headway on the comic scene with their first release ‘FLESH’ I was very curious to check in and see what lies ahead for Metal Made Flesh… and what better time ahead of Japan festival this month. Meeting in the rather appropriate Cyberdog in North Laine, we delved into the title launch FLESH and discussed what was on the horizon for this exceptionally talented duo as they embark on their futuristic novella series.

“Well I guess it all started with a brief encounter at the MCM Comic Con in London over a year ago, where I met Jeremy,” explains Simeon. “YES” Jeremy promptly says, “I saw the artwork and was instantly engaged, I could see the concept and wanted to help build on the overall storyline and plot, helping it evolve over time. “I loved the Sci-Fi aspect and was something I wanted do for years, but found it hard to create on a visual scale. Simeon’s work just blew me away”.

Jeremy, also a very talented illustrator in his own right, has his own comic magazine out called Bearlands; a zombie-slaying bear riding a motorcycle, smoking cigars and wielding a samurai sword! Bears killing zombie bears…what more could you want?

Metal Made Flesh, is split into three 24 page stories; Metal, Made and Flesh. Each have a main character with their own individual strengths and personality traits, all centred on being mercenaries/assassins (contract killers for hire) with dramatically different personalities and scenarios from each other. “There’s a story behind each character, where you see the transition, from human to their future cybernetic self or mutation, through genetic upgrades or misfortunes,” explains Simeon. “For example one of the lead characters is a serial killer placed in the artificial shell of a child, produced for TV”. “There’s a certain dark satire throughout, which is what me and Jeremy always set out from the beginning. Finding the balance with visuals and storyline, whilst making it a believable future”.

What’s next for Metal Made Flesh? “Well the kickstarter event in October will be the next major step for us,” says Jeremy. “We’ll be releasing all three comics at the Expo to help gain as much interest as possible, with the overall aim of expanding out into shops across UK, and America at a later date. With the possibility of creating it into a franchise that will allow other story writers and illustrators to have an input, as long as they stick to our production bible. Keep your eyes out for the comic series coming to a shop near you!”

For fans of comic novels and cyberpunk art, I would highly recommend checking out their latest comic production; FLESH, which is a fantastic read coupled with ridiculously amazing visuals. You can purchase a copy of FLESH online at www.metalmadeflesh.com

FIERY FOODS

CHILLI FESTIVAL

It’s heating up in central Brighton this month, as Fiery Foods UK Chilli Festival 2013 hits Victoria Gardens, on Fri 20 – Sun 22 Sept.

Started in 2005 by local legend Chilli Pepper Pete Seymour, the Festival is a celebration of the most potent of all fruits. Fundamental in bringing the best Chillies to the nation’s kitchens, Pete sadly passed away just before last year’s event, but the demand for the Festival’s return was so great, that it’s coming back to spice up lives once again.Featuring a colossal amount of stalls, it’s selling almost any Chilli-based product the mind can imagine. If you’re in too much of a hurry to get your Chilli fix to actually go home and cook for yourself, there’re plenty of hot food stands on hand to provide treats of the hottest order.

The event traditionally revolves around its many Chilli-themed competitions, where top chefs, and talented amateurs get the chance to show off their skills, and ordinary enthusiast get the chance to display their Chilli love.

Sunday’s Amateur Sauce Contest is for those of you who make the best chilli sauce in the world, and now is your chance to enter and let the professionals judge your product.

The Human vs Fire contest on Friday is a fiery feast where the points are in scovilles, and points mean ... pain and fame, well pain mostly. This festival would not be possible without the wonderful Chilli companies around the country, and the National Chilli Awards on Saturday celebrates the UK Chilli industry. Come and support your favourite chilli company! Date: Saturday 21st September

There are also various BBQ competitions held by the International BBQ Network and the UK Chilli Cook-Off, so why not get down there and show off your culinary skills?

If you don’t want to compete yourself, the FFUK chefs are on hand to show you how. Back for a third year is Dany Lamote from Baja California, Mexico bringing you the best in Mexican fusion cooking.

On Saturday up to 15 teams will compete from 11am - 3pm to become the Brighton Chilli Cook-off Champion and qualify for Sunday’s UK Final. Teams have four hours to cook a gallon of chilli from scratch and will be judged by a panel of Chilli experts. All money raised from the Brighton Chilli Cook-off will be donated to Martlets Hospice. The winner of this UK Grand Final will win a trip to Las Vegas, to represent the UK and compete in the Chilli section of the World Food Championships. The prize purse for the Chilli competition is a whopping $25000!

IBQN are running two days of Ready Steady Q®, a fast-paced and fun grilling competition where contestants get 45 minutes to create a dish from mystery ingredients on a gas BBQ. Each contestant is provided with a main ingredient, and may then choose another five ingredients from the festival’s market place.

As part of the National Chilli Awards 2013, the search is on to find chilliheads of a culinary disposition to make their favourite chilli concoction. The winner has the chance to make their product professionally in the Chillipepperpete kitchen and put it on the shelves of Chillipepperpete’s Chilli Shop, which already stocks the sauces of the previous four winners.

The big daddy of all the competitions is, without a doubt, FFUK’s Infamous Chilli-eating Contest. – Regular competitors (some might say maniacs) Reuben, Daniel and Andy the Hat take food-based pain to the furthest reaches of the chillisphere on Saturday.

Yum Yum Ninja may sound like the ramblings of a demented shinobi, but in fact it’s the name of a rather funky restaurant located in Meeting House Lane. The front courtyard lined with bamboo trees, minimalist black wood and canvas made me feel like Lucy Lui was going to jump out at any moment a la Kill Bill. Luckily for me she didn’t, as I was hungry, and everybody knows you can’t even think of pulling out any ninja moves on an empty stomach.

After a very nice glass of red (Borsao Garnacha, £5.25) in the courtyard, we were led into the restaurant. Again, this was a sleek but more ostensibly kooky operation: minimalism and tradition dominated, but there were a multitude of birdcages dotted around to add a ‘Brighton edge’ to the starkness. We were seated at the sushi bar, which I would implore others to try… it’s the equivalent of the chef’s table in that you see the inner workings of the restaurant, but let’s face it, the sushi bar element adds a whole load of cool.

We started our meal with a complimentary dish of pickled cucumber, with prawn and squid ink crisps. These were suitably impressive and made me feel that maybe, just maybe, we were about to get something really quite special. We followed this with the Chef’s Mixed Sashimi (£10.95), which was excellent. As I mentioned to the chef, with sashimi there is nowhere to hide (only the freshest will suffice) and this was really first class. We opted next for

a couple of the tapas-sized dishes, affectionately labelled ‘family-style’, that were really impressive. The Prawn Har Kouw (£3.95) combined perfectly cooked and robust prawns with a rather delicate dumpling encasement. The Ninja Bun (£3.75) enveloped double cooked pork belly, plum sauce and spring onions- it was such a sexy little bun I started to wonder if maybe Brad Pitt may be lurking inside. Ninja slow braised beef rib sticks (£5.95 for 3) came next. These were exceptional, unctuous examples of brilliant cooking - the beef fell off the stick; dripping with a sauce heavy in shallots, garlic, oyster chicken sauce. I will dream about these beauties for a good while to come!

The Beef Tataki (£9.95) was sublime… rare beef and the zingy ponzo dipping sauce were perfect together. The Tom yum goong salad (£8.50) was a rather clever deconstruction of the classic, whereby lime gel artfully encircled oyster mushrooms and gargantuan tiger prawns. We finished with A Taste of Yum Yum Desserts (£9.95) which were everything that I would want from the end of my meal… beauty, subtlety and above all, they were really tasty. I quite like having a bad word to say about a place, but with Yum Yum Ninja I would struggle. So maybe, and rather fittingly, my last word will be ‘yum’.

BRIGHTON’S BEST BURGER

Brighton Burger, Market StreetGenerally, Brighton Burger’s ingredients are locally sourced from Sussex-based suppliers. The Bruised Pig is what I opted for. This burger consisted of blue cheese, bacon, mushrooms, lettuce, red onions and mayo. There was a wonderful waft, whilst eagerly waiting for it to be cooked by Julian, the proprietor. He clearly takes pride in his work, with lots of passion. The burger arrived with a soft Tiger bread bun, which was filled to the brim with its mouth-watering contents, upon a thick wooden board. The meat itself was thick and very tasty, topped with well cooked mushrooms and covered in cheese. To me, no burger is quite complete without cheese. This cheese didn’t disappoint; it was strong and delicious. It was a real bargain of a burger, just £4 and well worth it. Everything from Brighton Burgers costs the same. There’s such a wide range on the menu, which includes twelve different and delightful looking burgers. Until visiting Brighton Burger, I don’t recall ever having a better burger.

Lucky Beach, Kings Road ArchesLucky Beach is a fairly new restaurant, found between the two piers. It’s a splendid location, with a great view, rather an ideal setting for the summer by the sea. Their menu consists of seven burgers, using what’s known as “dry-aged” beef. This means that it has been left to hang or placed on racks for several weeks, resulting in retaining natural flavour and tenderisation of the meat’s texture. Lucky Beach’s burgers range from their Classic burger, to David Van Day, named after the former Dollar singer and local celebrity, rather known for having run a burger van. I had the pleasure of devouring the latter burger. The David Van Day included a double-beef patty, blue cheese, Lucky Beach’s own mayo, onions, shredded lettuce and ketchup, all in a brioche bun. It was accompanied by fries, which cost extra, but they were really good and fairly thick. The burger itself was definitely decent, very tasty. The content within the dark brown bun which was sprinkled with sesame seeds was brimming with goodness. It was enhanced by the nice, rather crispy lettuce and by the mayo. The burger was certainly pricey at £7.25, although it’s great for a treat and ultimately very satisfying.

Burger Brothers, North RoadAt the time of writing, Burger Brothers has been open for a couple of months and is already proving very popular. The brothers, although they’re not actually real brothers, both work long hours with a great deal of passion. From their wide selection, I had a Bennetton Burger. This includes Exford and Tebbutt Blue Stilton, Portobello Mushroom, Pancetta, Wasabi Mayo, caramelised onions and Balsamic vinegar. The burger was enhanced by delicious hot chilli sauce, made by a friend of the “brothers” from a secret recipe. It was all contained, overflowing with the mayo, within a nice soft bun dotted with sesame seeds. Although certainly not cheap at £8.50, it was particularly delicious. If you love your burgers, it’s well worth going there to have as an occasional treat. Their excellent chips are among the best I’ve had in a long time; long, fairly crisp and fluffy. They’re made from Maris Piper potatoes, sourced locally from Sussex suppliers. Burger Brothers’ service was great; very friendly and welcoming. Everything about it was highly impressive.

Kensington’s, Kensington StreetI went for the café’s BBQ burger, which costs £6.50. It includes bacon, cheese, onion rings, lettuce and, of course, barbecue sauce. Kensington’s is extremely popular with Brighton-based studious types, due to their bargain deals for them, which includes the burger menu. The place was rammed with lots of the hip and trendy young things. Kensington’s burgers are certainly a speciality of theirs; there are twelve types on the menu, which caters for vegetarians and vegans, as well as meat eaters like me. The burger that rested upon my plate looked amazing. It was quite a tower of goodness, very much oozing with their own tasty barbecue sauce. It was all delicious, including the fairly crispy bacon and the thick meat patty. To have one of these burgers, you do have to particularly like barbecue sauce, as there was lots of it. Kensington’s don’t do things by halves and this delightful BBQ burger was certainly an example of this.

As enjoyable as this was; my visits to various burger joints throughout this great city, it sure wasn’t easy to come up with a winner. Ultimately, it came down to the burger itself, perhaps obviously, and its actual cost. Also, bear in mind that this all represents my own personal opinion, and that, as with my recent Brighton’s Best Breakfast journey, there were only so many outlets that I was able to fit within these pages. They are all well worth checking out and they all have their own Facebook pages. I’m very grateful to each diner and café that provided their hospitality for this adventure.

BRIGHTON’S BEST BURGER

The Trolls Pantry, Hobgoblin, London RoadThe increasingly highly popular The Trolls Pantry has existed for around a year and a half. It was created by Paul Clarke and is managed by the young Chloe, who clearly loves her job. It was first based behind the Blind Tiger Bar at the wood store, before moving to the Hobgoblin around six months ago, situated in a corner of the large beer garden, at which, upon stepping into it, I was instantly greeted by the enticing waft. I had their most popular burger, Smoky Mountain, which consisted of a 35 day-aged patty, smoked cheese, rum barbecue sauce, bourbon bacon jam, garlic mayo, sliced beef tomato and lettuce, all within a soft bun, which was baked on the morning of my visit. The meat was locally sourced and the burger’s ingredients made a great combination. The first bite was a delight, as was all of it. The mix of the garlic mayo, the bourbon sauce with the rum barbecue sauce was really enjoyable. Personally, however, I would have liked to have tasted the cheese more. The Troll’s Pantry has a growing army of fans loving their burgers. While there I overheard a satisfied customer say “this is the best burger I’ve ever had.” As well as the Smoky Mountain, other burgers include the memorably named The Minotaur and The Troll’s Stinky Breath. The burgers are certainly expensive, but well worth having if you’re a real burger fan.

Burger Off! Brunswick Street WestMy choice here was the bacon burger; one of the café’s most popular. As well as the obvious element, it contained cheese, tomato and mayo; the most basic that I had on my burger adventure. It costs just £3 and £4.20 for a double one. Everything is reasonably priced, such as the fourteen types of burgers, including their infamous triple XXX hot chilli one, which is for adults only. The burgers actually start from £2.25, for a plain one with onion and ketchup. My bacon burger had plenty of fresh crispy lettuce and the

melted cheese sat between the tasty hot bacon and the patty; all within the lightly toasted bun. It was splendid and good value, although I could have done with more sauce / mayo, as it was a little dry for me. Nick, Burger Off’s owner, has a no-nonsense approach; you get what you get, as it were, with nothing especially fancy, which isn’t really a bad thing. Burger Off is a popular destination, with many loyal customers, tucked away down a side street off the end of Western Road; certainly worth a visit. I’ll go back and have a milk shake next time; they do ten flavours, including chilli!

Burger Kult / Mash Tun– The winner! Church STREET Tucked away upstairs at this pub which is usually filled with Brighton’s hippest young folk is the kitchen which is behind Burger Kult. Usually residing over its grill is Ash, the main chef. The menu has nine options, such as the imaginatively named Tokyo Suicide, Whiplash, Death Melt 3000, Titty Twister and Chuck Satan. It wasn’t easy to decide what to have, as they all seemed so appealing, although I went for Chuck Satan. Within the soft bun was chopped chuck steak burger, maple bacon, caramelised red onion relish, Applewood smoked cheddar and their own apple butter barbecue sauce. I devoured the Chuck Satan while sitting outside on a lovely August afternoon with a refreshing beer. The burger looked superb and indeed it was; such a particularly tasty treat and oozing with its delicious sauces. Although the price is £8.95, it isn’t cheaply priced; although it’s worth it, especially as each burger comes with excellent seasoned fries. Some places’ burgers have too much crammed inside them, with too many varying tastes, but not this one. The burger was highly enjoyable and filling. I loved it. Burger Kult, which has been open for around six months, will sooner than later surely be seen as an institution for Brighton’s burger lovers.
