Brighton, so think outside the box. If

covery and debates about the future,

you’re going to be a busy bee with

Brighton Science Festival 2012. Calling

off on the 1st February with a 13.72

minute talk covering everything from

the Big Bang to Big Brother – that’s

one minute per billion years and

apparently it’s doable. With events

and workshops happening across the

month and town make sure your di-

ary’s formula goes off with a bang.

Once again, we have famous faces

popping up at the Brighton Centre

with concerts from chart toppers Olly

Murs and The Wanted, as well as

soothing operatics from the wonderful

Katherine Jenkins. Book your tickets

early peeps, can’t stress that enough.

Naturally, Brighton’s nightlife lives

up to its name with a host of DJs and

live music events at ever more popular

venues across town including Life,

Digital, Audio and Komedia to name

a few. Check out BN1’s listings at the

back for details; we’ve done the hard

work for you. Finally with Valentine’s

Day it’s time to show your loved ones

how much you appreciate them (a box

of chocolates will do, dear) and since

it’s a leap year, it’s traditional for

women to propose on the 29th, so our

congratulations in advance.

To begin with we offer not

one but two undoubted

legends of their time. First

up MArTHA rEEvES &

THE vANDEllAS (Feb

3rd, C2) who is simply one

of the greatest soul singers

still left alive from that

greatest of decades for soul

music the 1960’s. Yes she

may be old but she can still

belt out a tune and with a

back catalogue that includes

such classics as ‘Nowhere

to Run’ and ‘Dancing in the

Street’ you’d be a fool to

miss it! Then two days later

THE MISFITS (Feb 5th,

C2) hit town. Ok, it may

only be Jerry Only from

the original line-up but for

pity’s sake he is backed up

by Dez Cadena and Robo

from Black Flag! This show

is sure to rip the roof off

the C2 so go get tickets off

Buz at Punker Bunker right

now. Right that’s the legends

done, how about some local

hero action?

BrITISH SEA POWEr

(Feb 3rd, The Haunt)

return for their second

of six grand party nights

they are running until

June. Next up is local

post-rock experimentalists

CINEMASCOPES who

it seems have pulled off

a bit of a coup by getting

the support slot for the

OuTFIT gig (Feb 11th,

Green Door Store). The

headliners have made a

name for themselves and

are widely tipped to be one

of the breakthrough bands

of 2012 after they supported

the likes of Ladytron and

Washed Out. A gig at

my local pub is a regular

occurrence but when

BIrDEATSBABY (Feb

15th, The Ranelagh) hit town

it’s always a grand night.

They are here to launch

their new album ‘Feast of

Hammers’ which I’ve been

lucky enough to listen to

and it’s a corker. Dark,

introspective, classical vibes

mixed with a lot of theatre,

excellent!

We are also lucky

enough this month to

have some of London’s

best noisemakers come to

visit – uNDErGrOuND

rAIlrOAD (Feb 18th,

Green Door Store) and

DIGNAN POrCH (Feb

PreviewS

12th, Prince Albert).

That ain’t all either!

THE WAr ON DruGS

bring their lovely folk-tinged

indie-rock to town for one

night only (Feb 29th, C2).

ODDFEllOWS CASINO

launch their third album

‘The Raven’s Empire’ with

a special one-off gig (Feb

23rd, Proud Ballroom) with

support from indie veterans

Terry Bickers (Levitation/

House of Love) and Pete

Fijalkowski (Adorable). A

double-header is always

a good thing – two good

bands, one ticket – and

for post-hardcore fans

this month you’ve got

AlESANA AND WE

CAME AS rOMANS

coming at you from the

other side of the pond (Feb

12th, C2). Lastly we got

GrOuPlOvE (Feb 16th,

The Haunt) who’ve been

touring the US with the

ubiquitous Florence & The

Machine and with a debut

album ‘Never Trust a Happy

Song’ being raved about

in all circles they are sure

to be a band to name drop

sooner rather than later.

February is here so you have no excuses for not getting out of the house to some truly great events in town this month. By Brad Middleton

Owned by those fine people

behind the Playgroup

festival, this friendly and

unpretentious venue is

quickly becoming the best

place to check out up and

coming bands.

As part of its eternal

search for new and

interesting music, The Blind

Tiger has succeeded in

luring flourishing indie-

folk outfit Fanfarlo into its

chambers on 29th Feb.

Based in London, this

five-piece sounds like a

Folk-tinged, (and musically-

proficient) reincarnation of

80’s era New Order.

It’s entirely possible that

somewhere down the line

these lads (and lass) have

robbed the music lab at

their local secondary school.

They seem to utilize every

instrument you could ever

care to mention.

Fusing elements of

folk, indie rock and post

punk with their eclectic

instrumentation, Fanfarlo

build a sumptuous multi-

layered sound that will

FanFarlo

In case there really was anyone who still was unaware of The Blind Tiger on Grand Parade, then we’ll help you poor lost souls catch up. By Stuart Rolt

leave you gasping for more.

Upon casual listening

people will invariably bring

up lazy comparisons with

the Mumford’s or Arcade

Fire, but Fanfarlo provide

a more reserved offering,

challenging the notion that’s

it’s arbitrary to charge

along at a thousand miles

an hour to make your music

intense.

Since their modest

beginnings, performing on

the London indie scene in

2006, Fanfarlo have taken

a less traditional route to

success, by building up their

popularity on both sides of

the Atlantic simultaneously.

The lush nature of their

music has also won it

some brief appearances on

a range of US TV drama

shows. You know the sort

of thing… a hapless, but

sweet-natured geek/Intern/

secret-agent ponders on

the true meaning of their

unforeseen situation, as

some wonderfully evocative

music swoons away in the

background.

But this kind of exposure

certainly won’t hurt the

band, if anything it reveals

the genuine mass-appeal

Fanfarlo have.

With new album: ‘Rooms

Filled With Light’ due

for release on the 27th,

which looks set to catapult

the band squarely into

the mainstream, and a

European tour in full flow,

this is an exciting time to

be catching a band of this

calibre.

new on theScene

The BBC Sound Of 2012 list

was finally announced last

month. If you unaware of

this, it’s a compilation of

all the worthy, the weird

and the achingly trendy

acts of last year that Auntie

Beeb will be shamelessly

bombarding our ears with

for the next 12 months.

It’s well known that Radio

One hasn’t a clue when it

comes to UK Hip hop, either

giving scant regard to the

real players on the scene

or promoting the more

embarrassing artists out

there (I won’t give you an

Example). So it’s refreshing

that an artist like DOT

rOTTEN has finally been

picked up by this list on the

strength of his ‘Keep It On

A Low’ single.

Dot Rotten’s background

is straight out of the rappers

playbook: Wrote a beat aged

seven, busted out a rhyme

a year later, obligatory

on-going row with a rival

artist, universal respect on

his scene and (so far) little

recognition from the star-

making industry types.

But with a mention on

the Sound Of 2012 list,

some zooming around the

UK supporting Labrinth

on a nationwide tour and

next single ‘Are You Not

Entertained’ already getting

loads of support from Zane

Lowe and Nick ‘not Eileen’

Grimshaw at Radio 1 a

full two months before its

release, that is all about to

change.

The timing is impeccable,

what with a multitude of

chart-friendly stars singing

his praises, glowing plaudits

from the national press

and a string of high-end

productions under his belt,

it’s only going to take a

sustained promotional push

before this well-presented

young man is busting out

of East End London and

his immaculate beats are

booming out of badly-driven

small cars all over the

country. By Stuart Rolt

These local theatrical types have been around town for a while now, often playing interesting little venues to those lucky

enough to stumble upon them on any given night and experience their maudlin, blues/angst-ridden songs. Think Dresden

Dolls; a more poppy version of latter-day Lydia Lunch, as well as a whole blustering of classical elements thanks to the

string section and you should get where they are coming from. This album, released around the middle of the month,

doesn’t veer too much from their musical blueprint and will be a delight to fans both old and new. They play an album

JOHNNY WOrE BlACKAll The Rage (Dead Cherry)I must confess when I was initially given this by my gracious editor I kinda guessed I wouldn’t like it as it mentioned

some dude from Megadeth way too much on the cover and well, I ain’t a fan of them or that type of music. However,

once I got over my snobbery, I gave it a listen and it’s not what I expected at all. What we have is in fact a typical slice

of American sounding AOR that is kind of reminiscent of the music that dominated the 80s charts but this comes with a

message of support for charities like Help for Heroes and that can only be a good thing. By Brad M

Now! Owing a great deal to the timeless 60’s garage punk styling of MC5 and The Stooges, the band take a noisy hard-

rocking sideways look at modern life. The lyrics are shrewdly mocking and the guitars are brutal, this is the perfect

antidote to all the vapid simpering pop that pervades our lives. I want to be at one of their parties. By Stuart R

theatre

Upstairs from the Grand central pub is

a veritable gem of a small venue, The

Nightingale Theatre. Continuing their

program of small, but perfectly formed

productions is His Spread Legs on

17th and 18th February. Written and

directed by Ben Webb and performed

by Sean Hart, this is a poetic and

political bedtime story which is

moving and funny in equal measure.

The Permanent Way by David

Hare comes to the New Venture

Theatre 18th to 25th February. This is

powerful, and often strongly political,

piece of verbatim theatre which charts

the privatisation of British railways.

From a range of first-hand accounts,

from the survivors and bereaved to

Government ministers, combining

to voice a compelling story of

mismanagement and the disasters that

resulted.

The Theatre Royal presents The

Kings Speech between Mon 27th

February and Saturday 3rd March.

A story about the world’s most

famous man getting to grips with a

stammer and the demands of new

technology. Charles Edwards and

Jonathan Hyde show us that being

the monarch is all about more than

wearing lots of bling and politely

asking people what they do.

Upstairs from the Grand central pub is a veritable gem of a small venue, The Nightingale Theatre. By Stuart Rolt

Slightly more vapid, but no less

enjoyable, is Legally Blonde the

Musical which hits the Theatre Royal

between on Tuesday 13th and Saturday

24th of March.

This multi-award stealing,

all-singing, all-dancing romantic

comedy is about defying people’s

preconceptions of you and proving

what you are really capable of. This

is the funniest and most fabulous

musical around.

Blackly hilarious and full of

deceptions, secrets and betrayals,

The Beauty Queen of Leenane runs

until Saturday 4th February at The

Little Theatre. This story of a lonely,

virgin spinster, who is imprisoned by

circumstance, takes place entirely in a

shabby, poorly-lit kitchen, resulting in

a claustrophobic sense of desperation.

This is familiar territory for this kind

of show, but an excellent and darkly

comedic script ensures its one not to

miss.

Upstairs at Three and Ten presents

Two Days of Plays: A Bite-Size Buffet

until Sunday 5th February. Featuring

a collection of 14 wonderful ten-minute

plays that will be performed in little

sets of 2 or 3 at time from 5:30pm-9pm

the audience just pays for what they

want to see. Gathered from some of

the world’s most exciting emerging

writers, including work from the UK,

USA and Australia, this is excellent, if

slightly eccentric way of experiencing

theatre.

If your New Year’s resolutions have

been slowly severed over recent weeks,

and the oh-I-must-get-healthy intentions

still haven’t materialized, don’t worry.

If, like everyone else, you want to blast

away those annoying winter blues,

have a look at this month’s COMEDY

CHrONIClE highlights, and check

out what Brighton has to offer in the

way of funny stuff. It’s definitely better

than running on a treadmill while

coMeDy chronicle

HOW DID YOu GET INTO THE WOrlD OF COMEDY?I started lying my way into nights when I was seventeen – you’d be amazed how rubbish your Id can be when they really need people through the door. I did it till I was about twenty, by which point I hated it so much I refused to step foot inside a comedy club for seven years. I got back into it when I finally realised I was a normal person doing something very difficult and I didn’t have to try and be a genius. I also did the Jill edwards stand-up course at the Komedia. It teaches you excellent technique – she’s a black belt in stand-up. WHAT’S BEEN YOur MOST MEMOrABlE GIG, AND WHAT HAPPENED?When I was nineteen I did a Comic relief gig in a horrible pub in Amersham. Before the show, somebody got coshed at the bar – not even glassed, coshed. they had coshes in there. A few people went on before me and died terribly.

staring at a wall. The health benefits

of laughter are endless; it boosts your

energy, strengthens your immune

system, and if you get down to one of

Brighton’s finest comedy nights, you’ll

discover the side-splittingly social and

spectacularly sexy benefits as well.

In the words of David Brent ‘You

can’t put a price on comedy’. Er, you

can, but fortunately it’s not always too

pricey, thanks to some pretty savvy and

slick stand-up organisers.

Local comedian, compere and

conspicuous charmer Rue Barratt has

been putting on nights and making

people laugh since he was too young

to buy a pint, and we at BN1 Magazine

were lucky enough to catch up with

him to find out how, why and what? ....

By Beki Turner

None of my jokes got even the slightest laugh, but then fortunately I saw this guy at the front who was so drunk he was practically dancing about to my set. Quick as a flash, I hit on the idea of making him do different dances, taking requests from the crowd, who loved it. I was shouting ‘dance for me! dance for me!’, while they all clapped along. I felt kind of bad, but him being so plastered saved my hide, so I felt pretty pleased at my ingenuity until after the gig I found out he hadn’t been drunk at all. A couple of years before he’d come off his motorbike without a helmet. everyone there knew him. DO YOu HAvE ANY COMEDY HErOES?eddie Izzard, Mitch hedberg, hannibal Buress... that guy especially you have to check out on youtube. WHAT ArE YOur PlANS FOr FuTurE EvENTS, BOTH lOCAllY AND BEYOND?

locally, I’m going to continue working on my night laughtermath, which as of March is moving to the Caroline of Brunswick. I’m pretty stoked about a new night I’m setting up with sami stone at the old Market theatre, called laughtermarket (see what we did there?). you should come check that one out, because it’s going to be frankly amazing, and only £1.50. Although good comedy has no price. to put that into perspective, bad comedy often costs about five pounds. speaking on a more global scale, I think the future event we’ll all planning for is the Zombie Apocalypse. We don’t have many guns in this country so I’m going to use a baseball bat. It’s essentially a club, the most basic weapon devised by man. I don’t think I have it in me to stab someone, even the undead. I did stab myself once, below my left buttock. I wasn’t trying to though - I was trying to cut spring onions. I must have hit something because the blood came out in a great parabolic arc with every heartbeat. It’s like my

fifteenth favourite scar. WHAT DO YOu lIKE ABOuT lIvING IN BrIGHTON?the way you’ll often see all the eccentricity of a normal town compressed into one person. some dude with five watches on his arm and a plastic doll, or wearing a magic hat with his trousers held up with string. these are my people.

BrOKEN GrOuNDfortunately for those those cynics among you, the phoenix gallery appear to have missed the heart-shaped memo and is instead displaying ‘Broken ground’ from the 11th. this exhibition of large prints by Canadian artist derek Besant explores the theme of urban destruction; featuring reconstructed photographic images of building sites from around the globe. For me, it comes down to Kill List,

from Brighton based director and

writer Ben Wheatley, and We Need to

Talk About Kevin. The powerful film

from Lynne Ramsay, adapted from the

bestselling novel, is one of the most

tense, unsettling and brutal that I’ve

seen in many years; certainly my kind

of film. With compelling performances

from virtually every actor, especially

Tilda Swinton and newcomer Ezra

Miller in the title role, We Need to

Talk About Kevin, charts the exploits

of Swinton’s sadistic son, from his

birth to a particularly shocking trail

of destruction, which we witness in the

conclusion. Overall, this is a thought

provoking and an unforgettable film.

FilM

For this, my second contribution to BN1 Magazine, I’ve asked three of my Brighton based film-loving friends to sum-up their favourite films of 2011. By Wayne Imms

THE TrEE OF lIFE

Duke of York’s General Manager,

Jon Barrenechea

Whether this film is a masterpiece or

not, its release was the cinematic event

of 2011, a long-awaited movie from

the very un-prolific Terrence Malick,

30 years in the making. It moved

me, amazed me, made me remember,

and made me think. And I had more

arguments about it than any other film

in years. It gets better every time I see

it. An epic piece of art that could only

belong on the big screen.

13 ASSASSINS

Odeon Brighton Marketing

Manager, James Tully

13 Assassins, by Japanese Director

Takashi Miike, is a master class in

build up and pay-off. The story centres

on a band of misfits who draw a line in

the sand against a fearsome and cruel

dictator. A group of assassins hatch

a plan to attack him and his army in

an amazingly staged 45 minute fight

sequence that simply takes your breath

away with its inventiveness. Miike is

known more for his horror and comic

book violence, so it’s a revelation to

see him show such masterful restraint

here. Along with his upcoming Hara-

Kiri: Death of a Samurai, Miike has

created one of the greatest double bills

of all time. The best Samurai films

since Kurosawa.

KIll lIST

Sound Recordist of Elephant

Sounds, Kirstie Howell

For me, Kill List has to be the best

film of the year. Why? Because with

one fell swoop, it dismembers the

most unnerving beast known to little

Britain – the suburban existence.

It uses violence, not gratuitously,

but as a necessity, and keeps you

sweating uncomfortably on your toes

throughout the majority of the film.

Kill List skilfully delivers an ending,

which not only takes you completely

by surprise, it leaves you talking about

it for hours, in fact, I’m still thinking

about its ending, and I saw it months

ago. It’s a low budget film, which just

confirms what we all knew already

– there’s just no substitute for good

writing.

Wayne is the Creative director of The Space, which holds arts and film events. At Komedia on february 9th, the line-up of interviewees are oscar winning composer Rachel Portman and film distributor studio Canal’s Dan MacRae. While, at the duke of york’s, the space presents The Dark Crystal 30th Anniversary event with a screening of the film and very special guests. www.thespace.uk.com

the Bell

With the thought of never–ending gloom waving at you like a raging maniac it was a pleasant surprise to come across this hidden gem, tucked away off Blatchington Road, Hove, to raise our mood.

With so many pubs turning

into poncy wine bars

or expensive eateries it

was refreshing to see a

pub keeping to ‘the local’

traditions whilst offering

good honest food served

at reasonable prices with

healthy portions.

We decided on some

Tapas, a selection of four

to be precise. The list was

quite extensive and well

thought out with Prices

ranging from 1 dish at £5

to 3 dishes at £12.95. We

tucked into the smoked

jerk chicken kebabs, pork &

beef meatballs with chorizo

and salsa, chicken chorizo

croquettes and garlic tiger

prawns, which went down a

treat. Each Tapas selection

was well presented, bursting

with flavour and finesse.

Between the two of us we

struggled to finish all the

food so for £15.95 it is well

worth the price.

Whilst tucking into our

lovely meal we overheard

that the roasts were the

best they had in a long

time. We couldn’t give this

a miss. A few days later

we ventured down for the

essential Sunday fulfilment.

We weren’t disappointed.

I’ve had a lot of pub roasts

and this one fared well. The

food was plentifull, in fact

everyone was full by the

half way point. I chose the

lamb shank at a reasonable

£9.95, which melted away

from the bone giving a

delicate and rich taste. The

mixed roast priced at £10.50

had plenty of succulent

pork, moist turkey and

juicy beef, enough to solve

world famine to be exact!

Plus homemade Yorkshires

and cauliflower cheese are

always a winner in my eyes.

The potatoes could have

been crunchier on the skin

and the gravy a bit thicker,

but overall this was a nice

balance of meat, veg and

sides. If you have any room

for pudding there are some

nice homemade delights like

the banoffee pie or lemon

meringue, both with a

ginger biscuit base I believe.

The Bell is a charming

place with friendly locals

and laid back attitude,

complimented by its busy

kitchen. The chef was very

passionate about what he

does and explained the

importance of fine fresh

ingredients, sourced locally,

giving quality and value to

the customer. If you want a

real bargain check out the

other deals in the week,

including buy one burger,

get one for 5p! On Tuesdays

burgers cost just £8.50,

Thursdays it’s 25% off tapas

and a bottle of house wine

(minimal order of 4 tapas).

So what you waiting for?

Dive in for a pint and some

lovely grub!

Apparently she’d not been sacked, or

in prison, or even in rehab, well...I say

that; she’s been in Thailand and Viet-

nam, apparently with the view to going

on a 3 month detox. However on closer

interrogation she admits it turned out

to be more like, in her own words, a ‘3

month bender’. Apparently the owners,

Bill and Angi (not Jeff and Ruth as

erroneously reported last month!) gave

Emma a 3 month sabbatical and that,

dear reader, explains her absence, so

worry not!

Elsewhere, January has been an ab-

solute mad house of activity at BiGiAM

towers. Quite why I’m not entirely

sure but it seems like an increasingly

wide and wild range of activities and

adventures are on our planning list.

Our very own Jeff Hemmings – (think

Dad’s army’s Sgt Wilson for his unflap-

pable measured approach to life )- con-

tinues to take things in his stride but

generally there is an air of harassed

energy, excitement and endeavour.

To continue the Dads army analogy

I’m trying to hold myself back from

running around like Corporal Jones

going ‘Don’t Panic!, Don’t Panic!’ as

new venues, tours, festivals, clients,

DVD’s, and PR campaigns all have to

be progressed in short order indeed.

Verily a plate spinning exercise. If by,

any chance, any clients are reading

this, don’t worry it’s all under control.

Honest. You can trust me. No, really.

I’m a Doctor. A spin Doctor.

News? Well one of my favourite

bands, Phantom Limb, are playing

the Latest Music Bar on Saturday the

3rd March, a day before my birthday

(don’t buy me a drink, buy me a Kit

Kat). Actually looking at my events

diary I haven’t got much in there for

February. That’s not to say there isn’t

loads going on - there is... I just need

to find out what. In fact looking at my

diary it’s a bit depressing because I’m

planning things for the end of 2012 and

into 2013 already. I’m too old to see my

life whizzing past like this at such an

alarming pace; hell we’re hardly out

of 2011 and I’m looking too far forward

for comfort.

Ok, finally, one little free tip for all

artists and aspiring musicians out

there. Future copyrights are going

‘free’ which means all artists can pro-

tect their songs, film scripts, whatever,

from ‘theft’ and misuse without charge

(or any catches, as far as I can see) so

go to www.futurecopyright.com to

find out how.

Ok, need to go, got some plates to

spin, some panic to avoid, and I shall

be back next month with more tangible

Brighton gossip and, hopefully, con-

crete news of some exciting new events

and ventures which are on the boil

and will hopefully be fully cooked (as

opposed to half baked!) by the time I

next write.

If your favourite websites include

freecycle and ebay, you know the

exact location of the reduced aisle

in most supermarkets, and you’d

rather spend the morning at a car-

boot sale than churchill square, read

on! Living in Brighton can be steep,

right? Ridiculous rent, pricey pints

and the ever-increasing temptations,

from clubbing to cultural capers as

flyers are flaunted, and Facebook flirts

with our weaknesses. My revolving

reminder of festive Christmas and

New Year’s celebratory squandering

Bex anD the city

is a bank balance so miniscule, I

can’t even read it, and for the past

few weeks I have been contemplating

selling my bed.

While feeling spectacularly

poor at the beginning of January, I

decided that I hated about 90% of my

clothes. Of the 10% that I still liked,

5% were fancy dress costumes, so

apparently, not suitable for work. Of

the remaining 5%, there seemed to

be mountains of identical jeans and

black tops that screamed ‘DEAD’. I

needed retail therapy.

Your guide to Bargain Brighton (and who knows, maybe further a-field if there are any good deals on Trainline.com…….)

Now, rumour has that most

Brighton people’s idea of retail

heaven might be marching around

the posh shops in The Lanes, a

Topshop perusal, or even a soul-

destroying tussle in Primark. I

reached for the nearest bag for life,

filled it with pre-loved apparel and

headed to Brighton’s shopping mecca;

London Road.

Whether you’re new to Brighton

or, like me, an old-timer, you’re

probably familiar with the charity

shop clusters, and London Road is

the backdrop for one of Brighton’s

finest Charity shop collections.

Nestled among shops that refuse

to be expensive, the confusingly

‘boutique’ to the fabulously frowzy

are bursting with great threads for

less than the price of a pint. Designer

labels snuggle up to seventies

tracksuits, and vintage dresses long

to be worn again. There’s something

a bit magical about charity shops,

so help to keep them alive, and go

shopping!

Here’s my tip; for clothes and

accessories, London Road’s best

charity shop is Oxfam. Fab quality

threads, at perfect prices and lovely

staff with an eye for fashion.

the haPPy cell

Well here we are 2012, and the world hasn’t ended, as predicted. I am aware that change is afoot and there may even be a shift in consciousness in the air.By Jules Cloud

Or I may just be surrounded by

Brighton airy faeries? People seem

to be craving a different level of

satisfaction these days that they are

not achieving from a materialistic

or social level. A greater awareness

and openness to health is emerging,

with a focus on self-development

and spirituality as key to attaining

wholeness and belonging.

The Happy Cell on Davigdor Road,

Hove, was the brain child of Fash

Ghiaci who took over the old Legal &

General building, and it is now run

in partnership with his daughter,

Nicola. The Happy Cell system aims to

empower you through knowledge and

the understanding of emotion, your

health and your life.

Alongside this training there are all

sorts of classes, treatments, cooking

workshops and inspirational talks

including the fantastic deal of three

classes for £12 per week plus discounts

on treatments! There is literally

something for everyone. I chose to

attend ‘How Does it All Work?’ by

Fash, a Science-based talk providing

in-depth information on the way our

brains and bodies interact.

Fash’s own personal journey with

health problems, of both himself and

family members, led him to deeply

investigate the profound mind-body

connection. Once he reached certain

realisations he found it impossible

to believe that this material wasn’t

taught in schools! As his health went

from strength to strength he became

compelled to share his findings with

all he met whom he felt it would

benefit. Gradually more and more

people were learning this work

and freeing themselves from long-

term conditions ranging from low

platelet-count to panic attacks to ME.

Fash’s daughter, Nicola, was also on

her own journey and together they

furthered each other’s knowledge and

understanding, promoting the birth of

The Happy Cell in 2010.

I was warmly welcomed upon my

arrival, attending the first talk of

the day. Fash delivered ‘the Science

bit’ during the morning and he was

clearly walking the walk of his belief

system exuding calm, confidence and

self control, whilst giving us powerful

cellular knowledge. This Science-based

talk provides potentially life-changing

information on concepts such as

emotional addiction, adrenaline

junkies, the impact of stress on the

body, how we’re not as hard-wired

as we’ve been led to believe and how

simple, easy and accessible it is to

free yourself from your perceived

limitations –physical or emotional.

In the afternoon we entered the

‘Changing Room’ to take charge

of our unconscious minds! The

décor was relaxing and calm with

luxurious white couches to lie on.

This was where we were given the

key to unlock our inner potential.

Fash explained how to change your

mind, your body and your life. We

then observed a practical demo

and took part ourselves, when the

tools of transformation, along with

some homework were delivered and

accepted.

The result. A week later, huge

positive improvements permeated

into my more organised, integrated

life, with clearer communication to

attitude and more positive, inspired

ideals. I’ve always been big on the idea

of positive thinking and loved this

experience and place. It takes minimal

effort (and cost) with just some faith to

put a dent in any challenging doubt or

ignorance and gives maximum results.

Self awareness, kindness and CALM

is what we need to stop complaining

and reacting to the way situations

don’t meet our expectations, and to

release old habits and attachments

through an active change in our

beliefs and attitude. I do believe we

all have the same potential and our

mind is very clever at tricking us into

habits and behaviour patterns. I would

recommend this system to anyone, as

these small steps can create causes

and conditions for true health and

happiness.

Brighton tattoo convention

Brighton | 28/29 January 2012 A review by Gary Marlowe, Images Out of the Ordinary

Now in its 5th year, the Brighton

Tattoo Convention is not as its name

might suggest, a business meeting

about the tattoo industry, but a meet-

ing of likeminded people who share

a passion for adorning their bodies

with artworks, whether its on their

skin, in their skin or even under their

skin. As such, it attracts the weird and

the wonderful and has established its

mark as one of the indelible highlights

of the Brighton arts scene. This year,

was no different: some of the world’s

best tattoo artists were in action, and

their booths were filled with those

eager to add a permanent reminder of

their visit. Judging by what was on

display, black tattoos seemed to be in-

Brighton tattoo convention

creasing in popularity, sometimes with

splashes of bright red and we are also

seeing the emergence of a number of

talented female tattoo artists, notably

Guen Douglas from Holland and Leena

Lumilampi from Finland who each

specialise in creating designs that are

very feminine in both their subject

matter and the softer colour palettes

they use. The biggest issue for many

ink aficionados seems to be what to do

when they’re completely filled up. And

judging by quite a few at the Conven-

tion, that time is fast approaching.

Love them or loathe them, there’s no

question tattoos have become a fashion

statement that’s here to stay! Images:
