This is the 3rd generation of the city car from Mercedes, in partnership with Renault (Twingo).

The ForTwo is built in Hambach, and the ForFour is built

at the Renault plant in Slovenia alongside the Twingo.

Smart ForTwo and ForFour

The ForTwo and ForFour are based around the ‘tridion’ cell which has a structure with a high proportion of ultra-high strength hot-formed steels and advanced multiphase steels, particularly in the floor platform and body side structure. The structure is optimised to channel the impact forces from the deformation zones and around the occupant cell. CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) modelling has been used to assess the joint behaviours and new processes introduced including a MIG soldering process.

Dimensions are 2695 mm (ForTwo) length, 3490mm (ForFour) 1663 mm width, 1555 mm height.

The fuel tank is located ahead of the rear axle, outside of the deformation zone.

The tailgate is a twin-section design.

Technology : 5 SRS airbags are standard, with twin-

chamber side airbags deployed from the

front seat backs.

Forward Collision Warning is available

as an option, providing visual and audible

warnings of a collision risk with a vehicle

ahead. Moving vehicles are detected

in a speed range from 4 mph to maximum

speed.

Lane Keeping Assist (LDW system)

is optional, camera based, detecting the

vehicle drifting out of its lane, providing

a visual and audible warning unless the

indicator has been activated.

Crosswind Assist detects and reacts to

deviation from the desired direction in strong

winds, with subtle individual braking.

ESP® and ABS are standard equipment.

The multimedia features full smartphone

integration, with an option of JBL sound

system package.

Trim levels : Passion : models have 15” 8-spoke alloy wheels, electric windows and cruise control.Prime models have 15” 5-twin spoke alloy wheels in Black, black leather seats, Lane Keep Assist and panoramic sunroof.

Proxy : models have 16” Black alloy wheels, lowered sport suspension, leather/fabric upholstery and Lane Keep Assistance.

Edition#1 : (launch edition) models have 16” Black alloy wheels, the body is finished in Lava Orange with white body panels (the interior is in black and orange), sport suspension and the panoramic sunroof. It also has the Premium Plus package which includes: Front fog lamps, LED tail lamps, auto lights and wipers, rear parking assistance and rear view camera, heated door mirrors.

Powertrains :999cc 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 71 bhp and 91 Nm of peak torque.

898cc 3-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine producing 90 bhp and 135 Nm of peak torque.

A 5-speed manual transmission or dual-clutch automatic transmissions are available.
