STUDENT CORNER

THE ROLE OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN A STUDENT’S DEVELOPMENT

BY: SHAH KINJAL (M.PHARM 1ST SEM)

On college campuses, extracurricular involvement is a key tool in this personal development.

Involvement in extracurricular activities plays an integral role in the collegiate experience. Students become involved in extracurricular activities not only for entertainment, social, and enjoyment

purposes, but most important, to gain and improve skills. A wide and diversified range of extracurricular activities exists on our BMEF campus, meeting a variety of student interests.

⮚ Impact on Students ⮚ The importance of extracurricular activities on college campuses is well established. The primary

goals of extracurricular activities focus on the individual student level, the institutional level, and

the broader community level. These activities exist to complement the university's academic

curriculum and to augment the student's educational experience. Extracurricular activities provide

a setting to become involved and to interact with other students, thus leading to increased learning

and enhanced development. As the development of the well-rounded individual is a principal goal

of extracurricular activities on college and university campuses, the numerous experiences these

activities afford positively impact students' emotional, intellectual, social, and inter-personal

development. By working together with other individuals, students learn to negotiate, communicate,

manage conflict, and lead others. Taking part in these out-of-the-classroom activities helps students

to understand the importance of critical thinking skills, time management, and academic and

intellectual competence. Working outside of the classroom with diverse groups of individuals

allows for students to gain more self-confidence, autonomy, and appreciation for others' differences

and similarities. ⮚ Types of Extracurricular Activities ⮚ Because of the diverse interests of college students, the range of extracurricular activity offerings

varies extensively. Each activity offers students an opportunity to work with others and to gain

essential life skills. Though numerous extracurricular activities exist, the following activities are

those that are most commonly found on college campuses. ⮚ Athletics: ⮚ Our college offers some type of intercollegiate and intramural athletics. Student athletes may "try

out" for intercollegiate sports teams such as volleyball, basketball. Being a varsity athlete requires

a great commitment of time and energy for practicing, conditioning, and competing. Intramural

sports provide an opportunity for all no varsity student athletes to play a sport they enjoy, while

competing against their peers. Players at all skill levels are invited to participate, and often these

activities may be quite competitive. ⮚ Academic and Professional Organizations: Academic major and professional organizations

assist their members in acquiring experience in their chosen occupational field and in aiding in the

job search. Students convene to discuss pertinent issues related to their field of interest and to learn

job related skills in an effort to be fully prepared for future success.

Volunteer Activities: Volunteer and service-related activities exist to help improve the local and worldwide community, an important goal of extracurricular activities. In the one week for nation

program, students engage in community service projects, such as traffic awareness, planting trees, donating the cloths and food to needy peoples and blood donation. These programs offer students

an opportunity to contribute to their community.

Cultural Activities: Cultural activities lead the development of many important soft skills such as

resource management, public speaking, morals, ethics and many more. ‘SPANDAN’ is without doubt the biggest and mostly awaited cultural programme being organized every year by BMEF.

The list of the Events is as follows: ● Music : Solo Song, Duet Song, Group Song

● Dance : Solo Dance, Group Dance ● Theatre : Drama, Skit, Mimicry

● Literacy Even : Debate, Elocution ● Fine Arts : On the spot painting, Rangoli

In various events, the students of all college tried their best to prove that they are well aware of their social & moral responsibilities. The dancing events were also based on various themes and were presented in a touchy way.

⮚ Benefits ⮚ With the changing trend we have noticed a major difference in the field of academics too. Students

don’t want to be bookworms; they look for other options that could help them in the future. Besides,

this in this high-tech world, every student wants to acquire knowledge in every field to stay updated. ⮚ Social Benefits: Extracurricular activities increase opportunities for social interaction and new

relationship development. As most of these activities are group-oriented which have students from

different positions, which gives them a chance to more know about people of different passions and

cultures. ⮚ Practical Benefits: Extracurricular activities teach students how to work for a common goal and

this ultimately develops a sense of responsibility in them. It increases the level of confidence and

also teaches them how to co-operate and work with people in different conditions. They learn to

face the challenges that come in education and career.

Educational Benefits: Most of the employers’ love to hire people who are all rounded. Sustained involvement in more than one activity reflects the talent and potential of the student. Hiring officials

look for these talents in people. Besides, this when applying for admission in colleges for higher degrees, these students get a preference too. While pursuing these activities in college along with

education students learn prioritization and time management skills too. These academically and co-circularly talented students have well-groomed personality, which helps them to face the world in a better way.

BIOGRAPHY

2018 Nobel Prize in Medicine Awarded to

2 Cancer Immunotherapy Researchers

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to James P. Allison of the United States and Tasuku Honjo of Japan for their work on unleashing the body’s immune system to attack cancer, a breakthrough that has led to an entirely new class of drugs and brought lasting remissions to many patients who had run out of options. Before Dr. Allison’s and Dr. Honjo’s discoveries, cancer treatment consisted of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal treatments. A statement from the Nobel committee hailed their accomplishments as establishing “an entirely new principle for cancer therapy.” The drugs based on their work belong to a class called checkpoint inhibitors. The checkpoint inhibitors now on the market are used for cancers of the lung, kidney, bladder, head and neck; for the aggressive skin cancer melanoma; and for Hodgkin lymphoma and other cancers.
