MAGICAL TOWN CENTRE EVENTS

Jacks of Frost

The Saturdays

Barnsley launches its Magical Winter Events season with the Christmas Lights Switch-On.

Headlining the main stage on Cheapside top girl band The Saturdays, supported by special guests Alan Turner (Xfactor), Jeff Patterson.

On the family stage in Peel Square, Dearne FM will host a taster of the Lamproom Panto ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ starring Paul Shane and a special appearances from members of the Barnsley FC squad.

Bringing entertainment to a close will be Barnsleys own Sam Nixon and his band Fareview.

Barnsley’s Magical Christmas Light Switch-On

Join the Mayor and his special guest Galaxy FM’s Simon Hirst for the lights switch-on at 5.30pm

The highlight of this year’s Christmas Lights switch on will be a specially commissioned pyrotechnic spectacular, set to a pulsing sound track that will provide a stunning show never before seen in the Town.

With the Ice Rink on May Day Green, street performers and guaranteed snow there’s sure to be something for all the family.

Christkindlmarkt

A traditional Christmas Fair with a variety of special gifts, entertainment and food. It opens with a bang on Friday 28th November at 6pm with a fantastic firework display. Make it an amazing start to your Christmas celebrations!

Specialist traders from around the region and our twin town of Swabish Gmund will fill Barnsley Town Centre with a host of stalls to celebrate our nationally renowned Christkindlmarkt, selling a variety of traditional and unusual gifts.

There will also be food traders selling a variety of savoury and sweet goods plus speciality coffees and hot chocolate for your enjoyment.

Wednesdays throughout December

Fire and Ice Wednesdays with Late Night Shopping

Every Wednesday in December there will be ice skating in May Day Green from 12.30pm to 7.30pm. For just £1.00 for 25 minutes you can enjoy your own Dancing On Ice moment! Music and entertainment will set you in the mood for some quality Christmas shopping throughout our late night openings, each with its own unique attraction.

Every Sunday throughout December in the Town Centre there will be local brass bands playing traditional Christmas songs and music to shop to.

Stunning Lightcicles

Towering, magical glowing lanterns, will illuminate the Town Centre, creating a dramatic backdrop for our walkabout entertainment, featuring Jacks of Frost and enchanting balloon sculpting from Balloonatic.

Beautifully animated life-size puppet, Bjorn the Polar bear, complete with his own iceberg and of course his helpful herder Ursula, will roar into Barnsley Town Centre.

Come along and be amazed by our animated fire sculpture, a real sight to behold. With street entertainment music and fire jugglers!

Christmas Fair

Definitely not one to miss, for two days only!

Specialist traders are descending on the Cooper Gallery including the nationwide retailer of bath and bathing goodies Lush and cosmetics by Virgin Vie. Other traders include Olde Spice sweets, Grapevine delicatessen, Moo bags and Little Acorns Christmas decorations.

Christmas Crafts at the Cooper Gallery

Late night shopping at the Cooper Gallery, open until 7pm. Relax after work with a glass of mulled wine and a bowl of home made soup and soak up the musical entertainment and atmosphere in the gallery.

Crafts for Christmas

Our Christmas craft selling exhibition is the highlight of the year. High quality, individually designed, stunning and innovative crafts for sale by leading artists. Perfect presents for Christmas including ceramics by Eric Moss and Loretta Braganza, glass by Gillies Jones, jewellery by silversmiths Julie Pratt and Lynne Glazzard and scarves and cushions by felt maker Brigid Moss.

Ice at Elsecar

Get your skates on down to Elsecar for a special evening of ice skating and shopping at the Elsecar Heritage Centre. Many businesses, craft and gift shops will be open till late, along with entertainment for all the family. Featuring an outdoor ice rink with Peter the Penguin, live music and watch out for Bjorn the Polar Bear with his helpful herder Ursula. Visit the Victorian Classroom Experience, meet & greet Santa with your Christmas letters at the Elsecar Heritage Railway and see it snow!

Santa Special Train Rides

Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens

Celebrate the season’s finale with a spectacular event at Cannon Hall Museum. ‘Field of Light’ is a dramatic outdoor performance of fire, pyrotechnics and music set in the stunning surroundings of Cannon Hall Park. The event will begin with handmade ‘lightcicle’ lanterns paraded into the park by young people and families from across the Borough. Quality hand crafted goods for sale in the craft fair, see the Hall decorated for Christmas and meet Santa in his grotto.

Free Weekend Parking

Make the most of the weekend with free parking in council off street car parks. Newly introduced free Saturday parking from December, will compliment existing Sunday Free parking, giving shoppers more time to enjoy their shopping experience.

Park and Ride

A free park and ride service will be operating from the Peel Centre on Harborough Hill Road, approximately every 8 minutes, from 19 November. Services will run every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday till 5pm. A special service will run on November 19th and 28th till 8pm.
