So much of the magic of theatre depends on those elements of the show that the audience never gets to see and as a venue, we’ve had a lot going on behind-the-scenes over the past few months during our major £16m refurbishment.
Some of this work will remain hidden from public view, such as our new industry-leading technical infrastructure and major upgrades to the backstage facilities.
Others are hard to miss, not least our new 27m tall fly tower which is where scenery is ‘flown’ up and down from the stage.
These improvements will help us attract hit shows from the West End, the biggest and best touring productions and world-class dance, drama and opera.
When you come to watch these performances, including those featured in this brochure, you’ll notice some significant changes front-of-house too.
We have a new entrance and better access, new places to enjoy food and drink and extra spaces to enjoy.
It is fitting, therefore, that this impressive project will be celebrated with an equally impressive performance, Opening the New, on September 16. This exhilarating evening of classic and modern dance presented by The Royal Ballet and specially curated by the company’s Hull-born director, Kevin O’Hare, can also be enjoyed live on a big screen in Queens Gardens.
We are also extending an open invitation to all to join us for Heritage Open Days on the weekend of 9 and 10 September when we will be offering tours, competitions and the chance to meet some of the companies who are bringing their work to the theatre.
Finally, we’d like to make a special mention of the young people who have the honour of being the very first to perform in the venue during the Urban Summer Festival 23-25 August.
Be part of the story and explore the Hull 2017 theme “freedom” using music, visual art, physical theatre and street dance. Work together, take part in urban workshops with professional artists and create a final performance in the brand new theatre! In partnership with Hull City Council’s youth arts initiative Creative Voice, Hull Youth Development Service Summer Activity programme and Freedom Road Creative Arts.
Please email [email protected] to book your FREE place at the Festival. It is advised that you attend all three days. The event is open to ages 11-18 years.
