rcs construction was incorporated in early Fall 1996 with the intention of quickly becoming Atlantic Canada’s Premier Commercial renovator. In the early days we certainly hit a few obstacles after being sent down the road from our first meeting with Sobeys Real Estate department. We thought for sure they would see the talent and experience that a couple of 28 years olds brought to the table lol.....but that was not the case and we were shown the door and asked to come back in 3 to 5 years once we gained some experience. We were dumbfounded thinking our past (and vast) grocery experience building Loblaws grocery stores in Ontario would make us a natural partner for Sobeys.

“What now?”..... we thought after quitting our jobs and investing every dime we had to get the business up and running; perhaps we hadn’t thought this through. While sitting around an empty desk late Friday afternoon we started brainstorming and came to the conclusion I would have to locate some dude named Pete Luckett and convince him to hire rcs to build his premier location, called Pete’s Frootique, in Sunnyside Mall.....so that’s what I did.

Luckily, Pete being the entrepreneurial mastermind that he was recognized these 3 passionate, driven young men as the ones that would bring his vision to life! Little did I know it would become a life changing experience for me through mentorship. Pete has shared a lot with me over the years, but what really stuck with me was his vision for the ultimate customer experience and all the lessons that came with it.

Pete always said it doesn’t matter if you sell fruit, cars or construction; the customer experience would always lead you to the ultimate success. Of course you have to have the product and service to back it up but lack of consistent delivery can kill any business. It was Pete’s inspiration which lead us to the development of rcs 101 a step-by-step process of delivering every project the rcs way ultimately giving the client assurance of our uniform delivery.

Fast forward to today and who would have thought back then that we would be where we are now. We have gone from a grocery renovation contractor to a $100M company working on large scale projects like the $60M proposal we submitted recently for two multi-storey towers. Our experience this past 3 years in the Halifax Nova Centre has been a great opportunity for us to learn and better understand large scale projects. Brendan Nobes, our Director of Major Projects, has done an exceptional job of managing expectations throughout our involvement with Argyle Developments on numerous projects on what is arguably the largest commercial development East of Montreal. Currently Brendan and rcs are assisting with pre-construction of the new Sutton Hotel along with several other, smaller tenant fit-ups. I would also like to recognize Brendan for achieving the General Contractor Award of recognition for his contribution to the Canadian Construction Association (CCA).

I know I say this all the time, but it continues to be true - I’m very proud of the team we have and am excited to see what the future holds for rcs!

Feature Project - Avalon Mall Valerie Penney, Project Manager

As the Avalon Mall recently celebrated its 50 year anniversary, its owner, Crombie REIT has decided to start a multi-year redevelopment plan that will consist of interior renovations, building expansions, extended parking areas and revised intersections to allow easier access to the facility.

rcs is currently involved in two major projects for the redevelopment. The first project is ‘Phase 1 – Interior Renovations’. The renovation consists of upgrades to the finishes of all interior common areas including new contemporary ceramic floor tile, new ceilings with modern acoustic ceiling tile, intermediate linear bulkheads, and updated LED linear lighting. The food court will receive a new relocated entrance and an expansion to the area of the current entrance with a new window façade that will provide an abundance of natural lighting to the area. There will also be a new glass railing system to surround the existing atrium and escalators. The lower level marketplace will receive new Hunter Douglas linear ceiling finishes. Completion of the project is scheduled for summer of 2019.

The second project rcs is currently involved in is a 30,000 square foot expansion of the second floor above existing tenants within the mall. This includes the supply and installation of new structural steel, roofing, and exterior finishes, including siding and windows. This has been a very interesting project to coordinate the expansion of this area without impacting existing operations within the mall during the process. The new floor space will be the future home of ‘The Rec Room’, which is Canada’s premier “eats & entertainment” hot spot. It will offer Canadian-inspired cuisine, video & redemption games, live entertainment, and more. This will be the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada.

rcs is proud to be a part of this plan to re-invigorate the entire shopping experience at the Avalon mall for years to come.

Walmart - Save Money. Live Better. ...and renovate!Nick Tingley, Project Manager

Since opening our office in St. John’s, NL we have experienced a great deal of success across the region. In addition to numerous smaller jobs and the massive Avalon Mall project, we are currently undertaking two extensive renovations for Walmart; one on Kelsey Drive and the other in Mount Pearl. These types of gutsy renovations have always been rcs’ bread and butter. The ability to quickly react to changing site conditions, having experienced grocery reno site supervisors, and keeping our clients’ customers shopping experience in mind are all key components to maintaining schedules to ensure a successful grocery store renovation.

Site Managers, Tom Heath and Todd Martino successfully hit their first key milestone at Walmart Mount Pearl and opened the first phase of grocery on July 4, 2018. They are now working hard towards turning over the remainder of the grocery department for July 25th.

Randy, Margie and Ian Campbell, the site management team on Walmart, Kelsey Drive, are on track to turn over their first phase of grocery on July 25th and phase 2 won’t be far behind turning over on August 15th. The scope of work is similar to Mount Pearl with the addition of re-paving their parking lot and a ton of rock breaking.

Both stores we have will feature revamped the staff areas, renovated public washrooms, expanded stockrooms, new VCT flooring and many other improvements. We will complete these projects in August and look forward to the Grand Opening in September!

Our strong relationship and strong performances with these Walmart projects has also led to rcs being awarded a 23,000 square foot expansion and renovation of the Walmart in Gander. Site Managers Scott Whitehead and Dennis Kyle mobilized June 25th and renovations began right away, and foundations for the expansion will begin July 16. Scott and Dennis get to call Gander home for the next year with the grand opening slated for next June!

Planning for the FutureDena Hueston, Director of Human Resources

At rcs, we believe in client relationships; we believe in aligning our passion and professionalism with the right projects; and we believe in surrounding ourselves with the most talented and fun humans.

As we meet another growth milestone, more conversations are naturally leading to a ‘What’s next?” thought process. We know for certain that we want to remain focused on having the right people in the right seats; continuing to align ourselves with fantastic clients and being open to future building opportunities.

As Mike Kotsis, wrote in his EOS blog,

“To prepare for future company growth, you can’t just hire to fill the positions you have today. Instead, you need to define and fill key positions, with the right people in the right seat, that will lead you into the future and take you through anticipated growth. If you just hire for the position you need now, the person you hire may not be capable of leading you to the next level, which will just cause more pain and frustration.

Number one item: Hire for the future, not for the present.”

We have recently added a number of future superstars to our team, and continue to search for the best of the best, to foster growth and skills in the current and future workforce.

In a recent conversation with a hired recruiter, I was told I was ‘picky’, which made me laugh because we are choosy about who works for rcs. We have a culture that thrives on hard work, an appetite for success and the ability to make that fun, in equal measure. That is something to be protective of, in my opinion.

Whether you believe the chicken or the egg came first, one way or another, the secret to our success is like Richard Branson said, “If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.”

We are excited to have welcomed recent St. FX Schwartz School of Business honours entrepreneurship grad, and Academic All-Canadian, Craig Duininck, to our team at rcs.

Doug met Craig at an award recognition lunch for the Sobeys Foundation where Doug sits on the board. Craig was awarded the prestigious Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies which recognizes students for excelling in the classroom as well as in the community, with their extracurricular activities, and in entrepreneurial interests. Through this award Craig and Doug developed a mentorship style relationship.

After Craig graduated from St.FX he entered a program called Venture for Canada, a relatively new not-for-profit that aim is to foster entrepreneurship to ultimately benefit the Canadian economy through training and experience with specific partner companies. Doug, being a huge proponent of programs like this, immediately reached out to the team at Venture for Canada and applied to be a partner company.

Soon after, Craig and Doug were paired for a two year fellowship. Craig will be shadowing Doug and learning about business development, sales, networking, fundraising, partnership endeavors and community initiatives. We will also be drawing from the extensive training and experience Craig has acquired through the Venture for Canada program.

We would like to thank Venture for Canada for the amazing work they do in creating opportunities for youth to excel in business, bring new business to Canada and keep talent in the region. We are very excited to see what the future holds for Craig under Doug’s mentorship.

rcs’ NEW OFFICE!Dena Hueston, Human Resources Manager

Where do I begin with this legend? Superheroes don’t always wear capes and Valerie is that kind of superhero. When I met Val I knew she was rcs through-and-through! The way she conducted herself and her out-of-the-box way of thinking to come up with meaningful solutions was a breath of fresh air.

rcs rolled into Newfoundland over 8 years ago when the “boom” was at its peak. I would say we have been pretty successful on the rock, but the past 6 months we have really pushed it to the next level and we couldn’t have done that without Val!

Val is currently kickin butt at the Avalon Mall; a project we feel will go down as one of rcs’s greatest accomplishments. On top of that, Val is also heading up the Rec Room expansion. Our NL team has been a bit short-handed the past 4 months but Val has never given up, never complained. She kept the work boots on and continued to execute like a champ!

We also want to give a shout-out to her sidekicks: Project Administrator, Krista; fellow Project Manager, Terrence; and her troops on the ground, our site managers, carpenters and labours. We are incredibly proud of our NL Team! Keep up the awesome work!
