My dear parishioners, When I drive in my car, I usually listen to K-Love, a Christian music radio station. I admit, I usually do not listen to the talk show part of the broadcasts but last week, I listened a bit to what the hosts were say-ing. I have to say I was shocked by a question they were proposing and the position they were taking. The question was “Is it necessary to go to church every Sunday?” The hosts did not believe so, but the majority of callers who called in did. I thought it was crazy that a Christian station was actually telling people that it was okay to miss a few Sundays. One host even said, “especially when football season starts.” I gave a face to the radio, because I was in shock. I have heard of priests, Catholic school teach-ers, etc. tell people that it is not a sin to miss Sunday Mass. I always shake my head when I hear this said. It is especially troubling to me when I have spent years encouraging youth to go to Mass, they start going reg-ularly and then another authority figure tells them it is fine to miss Mass. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass." "The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day." The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. Participation in the communal celebra-tion of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church. The faithful give witness by this to their communion in faith and charity. Together they testify to God's holiness and their hope of sal-vation. They strengthen one another under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. (2180-2182)” I do not want people to go to Mass, just be-cause if they do not, they are committing a sin, but I desire that you want to go Mass, you want to be nour-ished by the Word proclaimed, you want to be fed by the Body and Blood of Jesus. Going to Mass is our op-portunity to join with the community and proclaim to God that we love God, we adore God and we worship God. Mass should not be a chore, but a desire to rejoice in the presence of the Almighty. God bless, Fr. O’Connor

Mis queridos feligreses, Cuando estoy manejando, yo usualmente escu-cho K-Love (K-Amor) una estación de radio de música Cristiana. Yo admito, usualmente no escucho la parte del programa de entrevistas de la transmisión pero la semana pasada, escuché un poco a lo que los presentadores esta-ban diciendo. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica dice que: “El mandamiento de la Iglesia determina y precisa la ley del Señor: "El domingo y las demás fiestas de precepto los fieles tienen obligación de participar en la Misa." "Cumple el precepto de participar en la Misa quien asis-te a ella, dondequiera que se celebre en un rito católico, tanto el día de la fiesta como el día anterior por la tarde" La eucaristía del Domingo fundamenta y ratifica toda la práctica cristiana. Por eso los fieles están obligados a participar en la eucaristía los días de precepto, a no ser que estén excusados por una razón seria (por ejemplo, enfermedad, el cuidado de niños pequeños) o dispensados por su pastor propio. Los que deliberadamente fal-tan a esta obligación cometen un pecado grave. La participación en la celebración común de la eucaristía dominical es un testi-monio de pertenencia y de fidelidad a Cristo y a su Iglesia. Los fieles proclaman así su comunión en la fe y la caridad. Testimo-nian a la vez la santidad de Dios y su esperanza de la salvación. Se reconfortan mutuamente, guiados por el Espíritu Santo. (2180-2182)” Yo no quiero que la gente vaya a Misa, solamente porque si no van cometen pecado, sino porque desean ir a Misa, porque quieren ser nutridos por la Palabra procla-mada, porque quieren ser alimentados por el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús. Ir a Misa es nuestra oportunidad de unir-nos a la comunidad y proclamar a Dios que amamos a Dios, adoramos a Dios y alabamos a Dios.
