My dear parishioners, Pope Francis has called for an extraordinary jubi-lee of mercy, also known as the Year of Mercy. It began this past Tuesday, December 8, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and continues until November 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King. Part of the celebration of a jubilee year is to walk through a Holy Door. Bishop DiMarzio writes in his letter on the Year of Mercy: “First, there will be the blessing of the Holy Doors in six churches of our Diocese; the Cathedral Basilica of St. James, the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph and two addi-tional churches in Brooklyn, as well as two Churches in Queens. This will occur on Sunday, December 13, 2015, the Third Sunday of Advent at:
♦ Cathedral-Basilica of St. James, Brooklyn – Bishop Witold Mroziewski – 11 a.m. Mass
♦ Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph, Brooklyn, where I will celebrate the 10:30 a.m. Spanish Mass
♦ St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Flatlands, Bishop Raymond Chappetto – 11:30 a.m. Mass
♦ Regina Pacis Basilica, Bensonhurst, Bishop James Massa – Noon Mass
♦ Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Astoria, Bishop Octavio Cisneros – 5 p.m. Mass
♦ St. Gerard Majella Shrine Church, Hollis, Bishop Paul Sanchez – 11:30 a.m. Mass
The Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is open only in Jubilee Years. It was a custom that was begun by Pope Martin V in 1423, when graces were accorded to those who made a pilgrimage to Rome. Holy Doors have been designated in our own Diocese in Brooklyn and Queens, which will be for us the special locations men-tioned above where indulgences can be obtained. What is an indulgence? An indulgence presupposes con-version, a seeking of mercy and forgiveness. Pope Francis, in his proclamation, tells us, “To gain an indulgence is to experience the holiness of the Church, who bestows upon all the fruits of Christ’s redemption, so that God’s love and forgiveness may extend everywhere. Let us live this Jubilee intensely, begging the Father to forgive our sins and to bathe us in His merciful ‘indulgence.’” An indulgence reminds us that if we have not in our life performed the penance necessary to alleviate the time that we might await God’s presence fully after our death, then that time can be shortened because of the pen-ances and the indulgences we gained here on Earth.” I pray that this Year of Mercy will be a time of forgiveness and conversion for us all. Mis Queridos Feligreses, El Papa Francisco ha llamado para un jubileo extraordina-rio de la misericordia, también conocido como el Año de la Misericor-dia. Empezó el martes pasado, el 8 de diciembre, en el Día de la So-lemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción y continúa hasta el 20 de noviembre del 2016, la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey. Parte de la cele-bración de un año jubilar es pasar por una Puerta Sagrada. El Obis-po DiMarzio escribe en su carta sobre el Año de la Misericordia: ”Primero, habrá una bendición de las Puertas Sagradas de seis igle-sias de nuestra Diócesis; la Catedral Basílica de Santiago, la Co-Catedral de San José y otras dos iglesias en Brooklyn, así como dos iglesias adicionales en Queens. FRIENDLY REMINDERS Christmas Wreath Sale
It’s that time of year again! The Young Adult Group (YAG) will be selling Decorated Christmas Wreaths today & Sunday after all masses. Wreaths will be $20 each. All monies raised will go to the YAG World Youth Day fund.
Birthday Party for Jesus All the children in the parish are invited to take part in a very special party - a "birthday party for Jesus" on Saturday, Decem-ber 19th at 11:00 a.m. in the parish room. There will be food, games, crafts – and a chance to celebrate the real "reason for the season" the birth of Christ. There is no charge, but we would be grateful for any donations of toys or pajamas that we can give to the children living at a homeless shelter. Please call the Rectory for more information.
Christmas Gifts for “Hour Children” and the “St. John’s Home for Boys”
Please help make Christmas a little brighter for a needy person this year. We will once again be collecting gifts for St. John’s Home for Boys and Hour Children. Hour Children helps the families of women who were recently incarcerated. St. John’s Home is a residence for boys from troubled fami-lies. Gift tags are in baskets on the altar and in the back of the church. The gifts will be picked up on Sunday, December 20th. St. Mary’s has been very generous in past years and it has been greatly appreciated. May God bless you for your generosity.
Christmas Decorating We could use your help on Wednesday
December 23rd from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon to prepare the Church for Christmas. Even if you
can only stay for a short time – your help will be greatly appreciated.
Join us for Christmas Caroling We will have our annual Christmas Caroling through the neighborhood on Thursday, December 17. Please meet us at O’Neill’s Restaurant between 5-5:30 pm. We will then walk around a few blocks, stopping at different homes to sing Christmas carols and then return to O’Neill’s restau-rant. Come out and get your Christmas spirit going.
Foundations for Ministry Program Are you thinking about volunteering for a parish ministry? Regalos de Navidad Para “Hour Children” y “St. John’s Home for Boys”
Por favor colaboren para hacer la Navidad un poco más brillante para una persona necesitada este año. Nuevamente estaremos recogiendo regalos para “St. John’s Home” para niños y “Hour Children”. “Hour Children” ayuda a las familias de mujeres que recientemente fueron encarceladas. “St. John’s Home” es una residencia para niños de familias con problemas. Las etiquetas de regalos están en las canas-tas en el altar y en la parte de atrás de la iglesia. Los regalos serán reco-gidos el domingo, 20 de Diciembre. María Auxiliadora ha sido muy generosa en los años pasados y se les agradece tremendamente. Dios los Bendiga por su generosidad.
Fiesta de cumpleaños para Jesús Todos los niños de la parroquia están invitados a participar en una fiesta muy especial, “la fiesta de cumpleaños para Jesús” el sábado, 19 de diciem-bre a las 11am en el salón parroquial. Habrá co-mida, juegos, y artesanías y una oportunidad para celebrar la verdadera razón de esta temporada, que es el nacimiento de Cristo. No se cobrará por entrar, pero les agradeceríamos si colaboraran con alguna donación de un juguete o pijamas para darles a los niños que viven en los albergues.
