Drainage and Asphalt Pads On the east side of the church improvements took place for better water drainage. Also, asphalt pads for the garbage and recycling bins were installed. Cost $12,000.

Church Basement Windows and Ramp Currently, the original basement windows are decaying and

need to be replaced. Modifications will take place. Thermopane windows will be installed. These improvements will also prevent water from entering the church hall. Connected with this project is repairs to the ramp in front of the church. The concrete joints will be repaired, and proper caulking will be done. Cost, including engineering fees: $40,000.

New Cooler The single door cooler in the canteen failed. Financially it was not practical to repair it. A new cooler, commercial grade, has been purchased. Cost: $3,700.

Doors: Keys and Panic Bars The external doors of the church will be rekeyed. The main church doors and the elevator entrance doors will be upgraded with the installation of panic bars. This upgrade will provide greater safety and security. Cost: $7000

Windows above the Shrine Chapel On June 4, three windows were vandalized. They have been made secured, water tight and insulated. Nothing further will be done until the replacement of them with the new stained glass.

Roof Minor repairs on the four lower roofs were made. Cost $2,000.

Carpet Cleaning The carpets in the church are scheduled to be professionally cleaned. Cost $1,200.

Please keep these maintenance projects in mind, when making your financial offerings to our parish. Thank you.

Church Decorating - Stained Glass Windows

Plans are underway to install the remaining stained windows by the summer of 2019. This week a window was removed from the children’s room, often referred to as the “cry room”, in order to ascertain the exact measurements of not only the windows, but also of the sealed units that will contain each piece of stained glass. Please keep this project in mind when making your offering to our parish.

St Joseph’s

Summary of Parish Survey Results

The main objective of this survey is to provide St. Joseph’s with quantitative and qualitative data that will be used to assist in the parish’s future planning process. Overall, most of our parishioners are very content and satisfied. That being said, there are some challenges presented by an aging demographic, given that 75% of our parishioners are 55+, and a migrating population that lives away from the North End. We need to find ways to make our par-ish a welcome place for families and determine how we can im-prove engagement among young people.

There are also opportunities to improve church accommodations for special needs, engage the youth, ed-ucate parishioners about all aspects of church operations, and ensure that everyone feels included, re-gardless of marital status, special needs, or life circumstances. With this information in hand, we can now plan a special parish meeting that will help determine what priorities and actions are required to address the challenges and opportunities that have been identified in the survey. The parish has hired Julie Tu-renne-Maynard of JTM Consulting who has worked with some other Catholic parishes in their renewal planning efforts to facilitate this important session that will be taking place on

October 21, 2018 after the 11:00 am Divine Liturgy. Your participation will be very important so please mark your calendars now and take the time to reflect over the summer months on ideas we could discuss to awaken the parish into the future. Thank you.

A Decalogue for Daily Living by Pope St. John XXIII

1. Only for today, I will seek to live the livelong day positively without wishing to solve the problems of my life.

2. Only for today, I will take the greatest care of my appearance: I will dress modestly; I will not raise my voice; I will be courteous in my behaviour; I will not criticize anyone; I will not claim to improve or to discipline anyone except myself.

3. Only for today, I will be happy in the certainty that I was created to be happy, not only in the other world buy also in this one.

4. Only for today, I will adapt to circumstances, without requiring all circumstances to be adapted to my own wishes.

5. Only for today, I will devote 10 minutes of my time to some good reading, remembering that just as food is necessary to the life of the body, so good reading is necessary to the life of the soul.

6. Only for today, I will do one good deed and not tell anyone about it.

7. Only for today, I will do at least one thing I do not like doing; and if my feelings are hurt, I will make sure that no one notices.

8. Only for today, I will make a plan for myself: I may not follow it to the letter, but I will make it. And I will be on guard against two evils: hastiness and indecision.

9. Only for today, I will firmly believe, despite appearances, that the good Providence of God cares for me as no one else who exists in this world

10. Only for today, I will have no fears. In particular, I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe in goodness. Indeed, for 12 hours, I can certainly do what might cause me consternation were I to believe I had to do it all my life."

THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE PRECIOUS AND LIFE GIVING CROSS

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving

Cross is celebrated each year on September 14th, com-

memorating the finding of the True Cross of our Lord by

Saint Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine. This

Feast is celebrated not only in memory of the event of the

finding of the Cross, but also to celebrate how an instrument

of shame was used to overcome death, bringing salvation

and eternal life.

The cross is at the very center of our Christian faith. It is

something which non-Christians often find difficult to under-

stand. Superficially, it points to the utter failure of Jesus’ mis-

sion. Crucifixion was one of the most barbaric and painful

forms of execution. It was also one of the most shameful

types of punishment. The convicted person hung stark na-

ked in a public place, the object of all kinds of abuse and mockery. It was the ultimate stripping of all de-

cency and human dignity. The same Cross manifests to all men God’s love for the world, for this world

that God calls to serve him and to praise him. Hence John tells us: “For God so loved the world that he

gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Adoration of the Cross is the adoration of Jesus Christ, the God Man, who suffered and died on this Ro-

man instrument of torture to save us from sin and death. The cross represents the One Sacrifice by which

Jesus, obedient even unto death, accomplished our salvation. The cross is a symbolic summary of the

Passion, Crucifixion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. This Cross today is the best-known religious sym-

bol of Christianity. It reminds Christians of God’s act of love in Christ’s sacrifice at Calvary, where he gave

his life for us, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The cross also reminds Christians of

Jesus’ victory over sin and death, since it is through His death and resurrection; Jesus conquered death

and gave us new life. The cross symbolizes the sacrifice of Christ through which he saved our humanity

and today it is presented as an instrument of Christ’s triumph. Our faith tells us that the Cross is an instru-

ment of our God’s saving Love.”

On this day, the Cross is lifted up to the four corners of the earth, and descends even into hell, that the

world may be saved. It is raised five times, facing East, South, West, North and East again. The whole

world is encompassed. When Moses lifted up the bronze serpent over the people, it was a foreshadowing

of the salvation through Jesus when He was lifted up on the Cross. Our Church sings of the triumph of the

Cross, the instrument of our redemption. To follow Christ we must take up His cross, follow Him and be-

come obedient until death, even if it means death on the cross. We identify with Christ on the Cross and

become co-redeemers, sharing in His cross.
