All those who love Nicholas the Saintly
Ой, хто, хто Микола́я лю́бить
Dear Parishioners,
The month of December has arrived. When we realize this, thoughts of getting ready for Christmas, the Nativity, not only cross our minds, but also fill our schedules. We should note, that in
addition to this great feast, there are other special feast days in December. I would like to highlight one of them, the feast of St. Nicholas, Bishop and Wonderworker, which our church celebrates on December 6.
When we read about the life of this great bishop, it is easy to notice that he did not only spread good cheer. By his actions, St. Nicholas reflected the goodness of God to many people. In one sense, St. Nicholas was like a “mirror”, which reflected not himself but God’s great goodness.
How did St. Nicholas become a “mirror”? He avoided becoming a celebrity. Instead, he became a witness. Most celebrities are here today and are gone tomorrow. Their fame is usually short-lived. A witness provides evidence that point to truth that is everlasting. A witness would never say “look at me”, but “look over there”. And what was the “there” for St. Nicholas? It was God’s great goodness. He reflected God’s goodness, like a mirror, not only by his words but also by his actions. He was a giver of gifts especially to those in need, a guardian of the poor and a defender of the faith.
In closing, I would like to make a suggestion. When St. Nicholas gave gifts, he gave them secretly, unknown to
the receiver. In this spirit, may I suggest that on this Saint Nicholas Day that each one of us give a gift secretly. This small gesture just might “mirror” the goodness of God to someone who needs to feel it.
Peace and Prayers,
Fr. Dmytro
Христос посеред нас! Christ is among us!
