President's Message

Well, things have not started off well since I have been president. I missed my first meeting in March due to illness (much better now) and since then the world has been infected with the CoronaVirus. As many of our club members have underlying health conditions and to maintain “social distancing”, the Board of Directors decided we should cancel our April meeting. Now it appears that we will cancel the May, June and July meetings as well. We will revisit the situation again in July regarding any future functions. Please keep safe and take all the precautions necessary to

protect your health. I have heard from several members who are working on Holiday Toys while quarantined. Arlen Handberg has built some very nice toys. If you are getting bored watching television, this would be a great time to make a few yourself. Regardless of whether we do or do not have a Holiday Toy meeting, we can still deliver toys to the Sheriff’s Department. A local business has been kind enough to donate some cans of stain to the club for our use. They heard that we make toys and wanted to help us. I don’t have the amount or the stain colors as yet, but I will have them at my house in about a week or so. Let me know if you need some and I’ll make plans to get it to you. Several other members have been suggesting we have some online meetings to share ideas, show pictures and discuss what is happening around the garage workshops. I am working with Randy Spengler about which venue would be best. Zoom is one, Skype is another. We will get back to everyone once we have it working. Whoozin, our main software for contacting and inviting everyone to events has notified us that they will be out of business as of April 10. Therefore, we will be using the Bladerunner and E-mails until we find another program. Please check your E-mail for updates. I especially want to thank Vince Vlasic, Mike Gorn, and Kevin McGillivray for calling members for wellness checks and offering to help anybody who needs assistance during this quarantine. We have great members and I certainly appreciate all of you and look forward to seeing you soon. In the meantime, take care, stay well and stay home!

March Program Arlen Handberg did a presentation on router basics. Thank you Arlen! Great presentation in practical terms for all to learn!

Editor’s Message Well, it sure is an interesting time in the planet’s history. Sharon and I wish you all well. It’s unfortunate that we can’t meet in person as a Club but we can talk on the phone to one another. If you get lonesome pick up the phone and call a Club Member. Send pictures of Projects you’re working on while cooped up and we’ll post as many as we can in the next issue. Send to: [email protected] Stay safe and healthy! Go make some sawdust! What We’ve Been Doing Jim Gorum: Jim came up with this very creative idea for plastic pots. He hand cut the stencils himself and then spray painted each color. Wow! Beautiful! We’re going to try with our 6 year old granddaughter.

Arlen Handberg made two of these for his church for hand sanitizer dispensers. Not only kind but VERY practical! Thank you Arlen!

Arlen also made these beauties. He continues

to amaze with his skills!

By Andy Rooney A BIT ABOUT MY WOOD By Andy Rooney When I come home with wood I have found in some obscure sawmill, lumberyard or farmers barn, my wife invariably asks one of two questions: "Don’t you have enough wood?" or alternately, "What are you going to do with that?" For me, having wood is an end in itself. I own boards that I would rather have hanging on my living room wall than a Rembrandt painting. At the bottom of my wood rack, I have stickered seven cherry boards 14ft long and 25 in wide at their widest point. I used to have eight but I made two tables out of one of them. I had to eliminate one car from the garage when I built the rack to accommodate it. I bought this wood from a man who had kept it in his barn for 20 years. I like the tables but they do not give me any more pleasure than do the seven boards. I have looked down at that cherry several thousand times in the ten years I’ve had it and derived pleasure on every occasion. What would I do with them that could be better than that.
