Message from host President

Mr. Nikilesh Lal President KSNSW

On behalf of the Kshatriya Society of New South Wales, it gives me immense pleasure to welcome all players, officials, spectators and guests, to the Sydney 2009 Kshatriya World Cup. We in Sydney are very proud to have the opportunity to host this great event,

Life in Australia can be very fast paced, and as a result, it can be difficult for families to keep engaged with our community. That is why events such as these are so critical to maintaining the strength and unity of our Kshatriya heritage. Not only does this event provide an opportunity for people to meet and mix with our wider international community, but the preparation itself also fosters closer relationships within our respective societies.

We in New South Wales are proud of the sporting culture that has helped maintain bonds within our Community. This is particularly important to ensure the involvement of our youth with the society. Our committee would like to express our ongoing commitment to the promotion of sport and recreation as a means to further develop the engagement and strength of our Mandal for many years to come.

An event such as this requires much planning and hard work to make a success. I’m pleased to say that the response from our society members and committee has been admirable – they have really stepped up to the challenge. In particular, I would like to express our appreciation to our World Cup Organising committee consisting of: Mitesh Thakorlal, Rajesh Thakorlal, Vipal Killa, Kalpesh Jamnadas, Alpesh Kumar and Niven Vanmali. Thanks also to all the community members who have assisted with all the ‘behind the scenes’ work, without whom this tournament would not have been possible.

Thanks also to all the other Kshatriya society Mandals, without whom, this event would not exists. Their organisation and support of their own teams allows this tournament to take place. A special thanks to Mr. Paresh Parshortam, Dr. Prashant Kalyan (New Zealand), Mr. Ranjit Solanki (Melbourne), Mr. Dipesh Kapadia (Brisbane), Capt. Nitin Solanki (Fiji), Mr. Rakesh Gokal (Suva) and Mr Nilesh Jamnadas (Lautoka), for their messages of support on behalf of their respective communities.

I’d convey our community’s best wishes to all tournament participants and to all the families who have come to support them. We hope that this event is an exhibition of athletic talent, sportsmanship and community spirit, and that we all take away great memories of the 2009 Sydney Kshatriya World Cup.

THE KSHATRIYA SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND INCORPORATED

Mr. Paresh Parshotam Dr. Prashant Kalyan President Vice President

On behalf of the Kshatriya Society of New Zealand Mota Mandal, The New Zealand Kshatriya

Youth Society Yuwak Mandal and all fellow Kshatriya friends from New Zealand, we congratulate

the Sydney Kshatriya Mandal on hosting the 2009 Kshatriya Soccer World Cup.

The planning, effort and organisation required to enable such a large and growing event to

succeed can only be achieved by hard working, humble and ultimately proud Kshatriyas.

We are proud to be attending such an event, which we are sure is being held with pride and

honour by all the Kshatriyas in Sydney and their fellow Australian Kshatriya communities.

Having now seen the Kshatriya Soccer World Cups in Brisbane, Auckland, and Lautoka, we are

certain that Sydney will also be wonderful hosts.

From our humble point of view, the Kshatriya World Cup, not only enables the community to

participate in a common sporting event, but as importantly unites, grows and enlightens the

Kshatriya community around the world as a cultured, respected and caring community.

We would like to offer any help we can, as a mandal and a community, and wish the organising

committee the best of luck and are sure that the hard work of the committee and fellow Sydney

Kshatriyas makes this event memorable, successful and special.

Jai Shri Krishna,

Good Day & Kem Cho to all our Khatri brothers & sisters! I would like to first thank you all for making a commitment to attend the 2009 Kshatriya World Cup

Soccer in Sydney.

It is commendable that although there is a very small Khatri community in Sydney, the Kshatriya

Society of Sydney NSW have agreed to host this year's tournament.

This is indeed a very remarkable effort and it should be applauded. A lot of time, effort and money

go into organising such events. We must all try and make the most of it. It is very true that unlike

politics and religion, sports tend to unite people. There is of course competition but it brings about

the best in a person and the team. It is very encouraging to see that we are having teams visiting

from Fiji, New Zealand, Melbourne and Brisbane.

I would also like to put on record the effort that players have put into training in order to prepare for

this tournament, by taking time away from their jobs and busy schedules.

We must all remember that this is not only a case of win or lose; instead we are all getting an

opportunity to meet some long lost family or friends whom we have not seen for a long time.

Finally I wish everyone a most enjoyable time during this tournament.

May the best team win!

Ranjit B Solanki President

Mr. Dipesh Kapadia KYC President Brisbane

Kemcho,

Firstly I want to congratulate Sydney on hosting this tournament. The tournament has come a long

way from the day of its inception in 2002 in Brisbane.

I believe its success is due to the community spirit and support which has been shown by all. A

tournament like this gives opportunity to Kshatriyas especially the youth to show their soccer

talents. However the greater role of this tournament is that it allows teams and supporters from

different countries to come together and celebrate and enjoy each others company.

This was the purpose of the first ever Kshatriya soccer game between two districts, Nadi and

Lautoka in 1968/69 and 40 years on we hope to see the same spirit in this tournament.

It is for everyone to see that this spirit has grown to such extent that it has culminated into this

major tournament that we are now having in Sydney and I am sure that our community has the will

and potential to see that this spirit grows to greater heights.

Capt. Nitin Hiralal President – Fiji National Kshatriya Society As the National President of the Fiji Kshatriya Society, It gives me great pleasure to say a few words to relay the best wishes on the occasion of the 2009 Kshatriya World Cup soccer in Sydney. The pleasure is somewhat measured in the unfortunate news of late that the last World Cup hosts have not been able to muster numbers for a team in the 2009 Tournament.

It is important to note that on occasions of this nature, it gives an opportunity for our community members to meet up and re-kindle kinship. No doubt with the absence of the Lautoka Team some of our people who would have been here have missed out. It is with this view that I implore all the bigger districts in particular the bigger non Fiji cities to consider releasing some of their players to the smaller Fiji teams on a previous Fiji district residency basis as a minimum requirement or consideration. A tournament of this magnitude requires a lot of work and no doubt the organizing committee would have put in a lot of work and for that we must register our appreciation. Quite often it is a small number who are shouldering a great responsibility and therefore I implore all members to assist in some way or another so that our community may prosper and be respected in the wider community. Our community over the years with its foresight has built halls all over the beautiful Fiji Islands but lack this important facility offshore. This is one area that we should explore over time as our numbers have significantly increased particularly in Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland and these halls as we all know form part of our identity were ever we live while providing us all a ground to unite. Another area where we may consider our energies would be in the area of Retirement Homes. This I believe should be in Fiji where our elderly may live with appropriate facilities and company. I do not wish to elaborate much on this at this stage but my thoughts have originated from today’s life style that we are changing to very fast. In conclusion, I wish the 2009 Kshatriya World Cup all the success, although only one team will win the tournament, we WILL ALL COME OUT WINNERS WITH RENEWED KINSHIP BETTER COMMUNICATIONS AND A STRONGER WORKING COMMUNITY TOGETHER.

31st March, 2009. The President Kshatriya Society of NSW, Inc Sydney. Dear President, We would like to convey our sincere gratitude and appreciation to you and your committee for organising the 4th Kshatriya World Cup in Sydney. This is a great opportunity for members of our Kshatriya community to get together and to enjoy greater fellowship. This event gives us the opportunity to encourage the younger generation to participate in sporting activities other than their academic pursuits. We should introduce indoor sports to complement the soccer tournament. This will enable us to have greater participation amongst our young and old. Once again, on behalf of SKYM, we are pleased to be involved in this wonderful event and look forward to the fellowship in Sydney. We wish you all the success in this tournament. Yours in Sports, RAKESH GOKAL President SKYM

Lautoka Kshatriya Yuwak Mandal

Lautoka is proud to see Sydney hosting the 4th Kshatriya World Cup soccer. This is a premier event in the Kshatriya calendar which we all enjoy, have fond memories and really look forward to. It is a great initiative by Sydney Kshatriya society to host this event and we wish them all the success. It is unfortunate due to declining numbers Lautoka has not able to place a team in the 2009 competition. Lautoka has been a leader in, and great participator of all community events and hope we can get the number and participate in future events. Since this events inception in 2002 in Brisbane followed by Auckland in 2005, and Lautoka in 2007 these cities have been proud hosts of this event which has been greatly successful. We have witnessed a large migration of the Kshatriya community over the years with our people spread across many countries. This is the best opportunity to re-unite, rejoice with old friends and family and create an environment to make more friends. These events also provide an excellent occasion for our community to get-together and strengthen our cultural heritage. As leaders of the associations we must ensure that we have continuity to these events. We do understand and realize the enormous task of hosting. Let’s all get together in true spirits of sportsmanship and ensure that this tournament is a success. God Bless Us All Nilesh Jamnadas Lautoka Kshatriya Yuwak Mandal

From the KSNSW:

We thank the Lautoka Committee for their well wishes. We regret that they were unable to form a team for the 2009 competition – the tournament will unfortunately be missing one of its most dyanamic teams. All the best, and we look forward to your return in the next world cup. And return they will!

Kshatriya Samaj Darpan By Dipak F. Solanki Introduction: The history of arrival of our forefathers and our present prosperity is full of courage, sacrifice and indomitable faith and patience. Nearly 100 years ago, our forefathers arrived mostly from Navsari, Gandevi, Chikhli and Valsad in Gujarat, India to Fiji, some 10,000 km away from motherland. Their journey to Fiji by ship lasted about 21 to 30 days. They were quarantined at Nukulau Island before taken to Suva. These ships did not have any cabins and they cooked their own food most of the time. It is difficult to imagine their hardship during this journey, in this modern day of supersonic aircraft and luxurious ships. When they landed in this undeveloped and unknown country, they did not have anything with them. They faced unknown people and language, but without losing hope they worked relentlessly and laid the foundation of our prosperity. Arrival: Amongst the first Kshatriya to arrive in Fiji were the founder of Narseys Limited, Late Motiram Narsey and the founder of Narotam & Company, Late Narotam Karsandas Solanki in 1908 (Ref: A vision for Change by Dr. Brij V. Lal) Beginning: In the beginning, migration was restricted to males only. The bachelors, including the married ones, who left their families in India, accepted the challenge to come out of India to escape poverty. In early days, most of the members of Kshatriya Community started with tailoring business. Some diversified and set up small retail shop selling textile and readymade garments. Progress: Some entrepreneurs started importing clothing from Hong Kong, Japan etc and wholesaling this in Fiji and the neighbouring Island countries. Some even went to the extent of setting up branches in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and more recently in China. Some enterprising businessmen went overseas and secured agencies for well-known electronic goods. In mid sixties, duty free shopping concept was introduced in Fiji that brought boom in the duty free business. A number of duty free shops were opened in Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, Sigatoka, Savusavu and Labasa. Most of these shops were owned by our community members.

Kshatriya World Cup - Official Magazine

Duty reduction from Australia and New Zealand in late seventies was the downturn of this trade. Quite a number of duty free shops started declining. Members began to diversify and ventured into other business such as Real Estate, Hotels, Hotels and Motels supplies, Film Exhibition and Distribution, Photographic and Film Processing, Restaurants, Hardware & Timber supplies, Saw Milling, Earth Moving, Building and Civil Engineering Contracting, Electronic and Engineering supplies, Computer supplies etc. Also some entrepreneurs started importing white goods. Recently one of our leading business houses in association with others acquired a multimillion dollar Courts Home Centre business. In manufacturing front, businessmen produced a range of products such as Readymade Garments, Electrical cables, Polyethylene bags, Socks, Envelops and Computer stationary, Plastics and Paper Ware, Handicrafts, Furniture, Fencing Wires and Nails etc. There are some dominant players in the Export trade whose performance is recognized by the Fiji Government. Social Activities: Apart from being business oriented, Kshatriya community is also very much socially committed. The growing number of Kshatriya members all across Fiji, saw a need for Mandal to serve the community needs. The first such Mandal was established in Suva on 14th October 1959 with the purpose of renting out utensils for wedding etc to community members as well as others. Other centres in Fiji followed soon after. Soon the need for community owned Hall was on the agenda and the first Community Hall was built in Nadi followed by Community Hall in Suva, Lautoka, Labasa, Ba and Tavua. Today we can proudly say that, we are the only community in Fiji to own a Hall in every major centre throughout Fiji and are serving the need of our community and others as well. Besides formation of the Mandal, subsequently Yuwak and Mahila Mandal were formed to assist the main body in various social, cultural and religious activities. A further step to strengthen the cooperation and communication in the community was initiated by the foresighted leaders of our community and has established a national body named 'Fiji National Kshatriya Society' in 1983. The function of the National body is to look after the individual and family problem within the community and regulate the unwarranted customs. The body achieved a reasonable success. Education: Parents are now more eager about the importance of education for their children. Unlike our fathers and forefathers who mainly concentrated in the business, these youngsters are achieving academic excellence in various fields and opting for more professional career path such as accountants, doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, architects, engineers, photography and journalism, pilots and information technologists etc. Today some of them are running the successful professional practices and consultancies. Besides this some members have achieved success in print and electronic media. Also amongst us we have famous and talented singers as well as a Legal Marriage Celebrant nominated by Gujarat Samaj and appointed by Fiji Government.

Politics: Except for a few, our community members always kept away from the mainstream politics, silently supporting the political parties of their choice. Some members of our community have served as Mayors and Councilors of the various towns and cities and some as Member of Parliament and Senators. They have given their valuable service to the nation. Sports: Initially, the sporting activities remained one of the most important form of entertainment and medium of unifying our people from the different districts. In early days cricket was very popular and was played regularly between Suva, Lautoka, Nadi and Ba. The first contact in soccer started in early seventies when our youths from Lautoka and Nadi played a friendly match and later in a months time played a match on the trophy donated by a community member from Lautoka followed by a match between Suva and Lautoka for the Faltu Paisa Trophy. The first Kshatriya Inter-District Soccer Tournament was held in 1972. The trophy was donated by a community member from Suva. Also the first Kshatriya World cup Soccer Tournament was held in Brisbane, Australia. The teams from Australia, New Zealand and Fiji participated. Besides this, our community members also play lawn tennis, table tennis, squash, chess etc. Our youth also participate in Gujarati Inter-District Tournament and some members represented the country in various sports and events around the world. Contribution: Our community has also contributed to the education, social, cultural and religious development of Fiji. Some of our community members took active part in establishment and development of Gujarat Education Society, Gujarat Samaj, various temples and crematorium throughout Fiji. Shree Laxminarayan temple, Hostel for Fiji Blind Society and Makoi Health Centre are living examples of charitable nature of contribution of our community. Our community members are also providing the valuable services and support to organisation such as Hindu Society, Fiji Sevashram Sangha, Poor Relief Society, Stri Sewa Samaj, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Fiji Blind Society, chamber of Commerce, Bailey Clinic, Retailers Association, Old People Home etc.

The Coups: Unfortunately, quite a few Kshatriya left Fiji after 1987 coups. The events of 1987 changed the entire thinking of the business community. Many felt insecure and were looking for the first chance to migrate. Many businessmen and professionals migrated to mainly Australia and New Zealand. Some migrated to Canada and America for brighter and better future. The second coup in 2000 intensified the exodus of our people to these countries. Yet another coup in December 2006 further aggravated the situation. Conclusion: Our forefathers, the pioneers who risked into migrating to unknown land would be very proud to see the level of remarkable success, achieved by our community. Kshatriya of today is well educated, financially sound, exposed to the wider world, much wise and experienced. They are ready to face challenge of this modern world. With one hundred years of our arrival around the corner, we should look forward to preserving our language, culture and promoting more family values. We should learn to live in harmony and cooperation with our Fijian brothers and sisters, appreciate and know their culture. This is the only way forward for us.

The KSNSW and soccer… a brief history The Kshatriya Society of NSW has grown from a handful of pioneering families who arrived in Sydney in the 70’s and 80’s. As Fiji’s political and economic situation began to become unstable during the 90’s, there was a rapid growth in the number of Kshatriya migrants to Australia. Today, our community has over 300 members, the majority of whom have come from Fiji – but with a growing number of Indian nationals. The society has regular functions, including an annual Diwali Function/AGM, Ghosh Fulia Nights, picnics, and a variety of other community get-togethers. Soccer was an integral part of Kshatriya youth’s lives in fiji. Whether it was weekend matches, Gujarati tournaments, or just a kick-around after school, soccer was ingrained as part of the Fiji lifestyle. Early migrants to Australia brought this soccer-loving lifestyle with them. Initially, many joined local clubs or other casual ethnic teams for their weekly fix. As the population grew, there were sufficient numbers to form a team of keen players. Casual weekend soccer, often augmented with other Gujarati and Hindustani players, became common. Through this commitment to the spirit of Soccer, the Sydney team has been a founding member of what has become the Kshatriya World Cup. This same commitment has enabled us to become the defending champions of the Cup. With further migration, and many of our youth taking up the round-ball game, our team continues to grow and develop new skills. Many current members lay with registered NSW clubs, and bring new pride and professionalism to our game. As the defending champions, we see a bright future for the game here in NSW.

Thoughts from the Defending Champions Sydney, being the winner of 2007 Kshatriya World Cup Soccer, is proud to host 2009 Air Pacific Kshatriya World Cup Soccer. Being the defending champions, it has been a challenge for us to bring about the form and physical strength that we had in Lautoka, 2007. All the players have worked hard, sacrificing their time to be in training for the last 6 months. Internal Coaches and physical trainers have placed immense pressure on the players to get their fitness’s up to scratch and our players have responded with the commitment and dedication of professionals. We are confident of a successful 2009 campaign, and hope to retain the trophy for yet another year.

Tribute to the Trophy Sponsors Thakorlal Cup

The pinnacle of the Kshatriya World cup is the Winners trophy – donated by the Thakorlal family early in the tournament’s history. The winner has the honour to take the Thakorlal trophy back to their home city, and treasure it for two years.

This trophy has come to symbolize the commitment, hard work and determination

shown by all participants. But it also stands for the unity and togetherness our community experiences at each of these events.

Ranchod Hazrat Cup Awarded to the Runner-up in recognition of their outstanding performance in reaching the ultimate round of the tournament. Chimanlal Jamnadas Trophy This trophy celebrates inspirational sportsmanship as shown by the fair play team.

Hemant Hazrat Trophy The tournaments highest scoring team receives this trophy in recognition of their superior attacking prowess. Prashant Dipak Solanki Memorial Trophy Award to the best and fairest player, encapsulating the spirit of sportsmanship to which we all aspire. We sincerely thank all the trophy donors for providing these symbols of achievement in our tournament, and for their support of this sport for so many years.

Tribute to the Player’s families In the lead up to the Kshatriya society world cup, our players have been training very hard, away for many hours each week. But behind each player is a supporting family to help him pursue his sporting endeavors. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the players spouses and families for their support and understanding during this time. For letting the boys off the hook for domestic duties. For allowing them to miss other commitments. For putting up with them when they come home aching and sore. And in particularly, for the help and work that goes in behind the scenes to make an event like this work. Thanks.
