African American Chamber launchesminority business site

Advocates say they hear plenty of excuses when it comes to not supporting

black-owned businesses, from not being able to find one to having had a bad

experience in the past.

The African American Chamber of Commerce hopes to put an end to the

excuses with the unveiling of Reverse 90.com. The site showcases places to eat,

shop and secure a range of other services from black-owned firms in

Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The Chamber’s Reverse 90 campaign, launched over the summer, is aimed

at turning around the dismal support for black businesses. The effort gets its

name from research showing that 10 percent of money spent by blacks support

The world’s premier music publication, Billboard magazine, has publishedits “Year in Music” issue that includes accolades for 2010, and Boardwalk Hallhas been recognized as the top grossing mid-sized arena in North America. Asdetailed in Billboard's Top 10 Venues chart, the 14,700 seat Hall grossed morethan $15 million in ticket sales, and attracted 252,577 attendees for 35 ticketedshows that include 15 concerts and seven sellouts. Boardwalk Hall finishedahead of the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland and Spokane Arena inSpokane, Washington. KAPPA ALPHA PSI FRATERNITY, INC.Announces Centennial Founders’ Day Events

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the international fraternal association,

headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania will celebrated it’s Centennial

Anniversary on January 5th. Founded at Indiana University, Bloomington,

Indiana on January 5, 1911, the fraternity has initiated over 150,000 members

since its inception, including some of the country’s foremost citizens. Members

of Kappa’s Leadership Team traveled to Indiana University on January 5th to

officially kickoff its Centennial Celebration with a historic ceremony that will

include the university’s president (Michael A. McRobbie), provost (Karen

Hanson, Ph.D.), and the mayor of Bloomington (Honorable Mark Kruzan).

Following those events, the team traveled to Indianapolis where three of its

ten Founders are buried. Ritualistic ceremonies were performed at the grave

sites. Simultaneously, in six other cities across the country, similar ceremonies

were performed for the remaining seven Founders, including one at the

International Headquarters (2322 N. Broad Street), where the remains of one of

the Founding Fathers is housed. Dwayne M. Murray, Esq, Grand Polemarch

(CEO) said, “As you may imagine, this is a very special time for Kappa. We have

planned for this moment for years and it is finally here. Our history is one of

individuals who have achieved in every field of human endeavor and we are

poised to celebrate the individual and collective accomplishments of our

great organization.”

After departing Indianapolis, the team arrived in Philadelphia on January 6th

for its annual Grand Board of Directors Meeting and Centennial Founders’ Day

Banquet. Over 1200 members, with representation from almost every state, are

expected to attend the event which will be held at the Sheraton City Center Hotel

on Saturday, January 8th. The weekend will culminate with the fraternity’s 4th

annual Sunday of Hope Program, a philanthropic partnership with St. Jude

Children’s Research Hospital of Memphis, Tennessee for which the fraternity

has donated over $1 Million. The public church service will be held at Jones

Tabernacle AME Church (2021 W. Diamond Street), pastored by fraternity

member, Reverend Steven M. Lewis, at 9:00 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

The fraternity will end the official celebration with its Centennial

Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 5-10, 2011. Over 35,000 members,

families, and friends are expected to attend.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is a predominantly African-American

organization whose fundamental purpose is achievement. It seeks to train its

membership, especially undergraduates, for leadership roles in their respective

communities and the attainment of a high degree of excellence in their

academic pursuits. Undergraduate Chapters are located on more than 364

College and University campuses, and Alumni Chapters are arrayed in some 347

cities in the United States and five foreign countries. Since its founding on

January 5, 1911 on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, the

fraternity has initiated over 120,000 college-trained men. Following is some

general information about the fraternity and its initiatives.

MISSIONKappa Alpha Psi is an international fraternal association which exemplifies

leadership and honorable achievement, is dedicated to the enrichment of its

membership and recognized as a positive force in the communities it serves.

KAPPA ALPHA PSI NATIONAL PROGRAMSSt. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Partnership. Kappa began an

official partnership with the Memphis-based facility in 2003. Since then it has

become the primary benefactor of the fraternity’s fundraising efforts. On January

6, 2008, the partnership kicked off a national “Sunday of Hope” campaign at

various churches around the country. Members of the fraternity will lead a

presentation focusing on the hospital’s contributions to society and solicit

support from each church. The program has already raised over $1 Million, mak-

ing Kappa the largest African-American organization to contribute to the

hospital. In 2010, the hospital recognized the fraternity by naming the entrance

to the sickle cell unit in its honor.

Habitat for Humanity Program. During the Fraternity’s biennial

conventions, it built a home for a local family in conjunction with HFH. Homes

have been recently donated in Atlanta, St. Louis and Minneapolis. The

fraternity also commits to providing future scholarships for the children of the

adopted family and works with some of its national sponsors (i.e., Best Buy,

Target, Home Depot) to provide furnishings and other amenities for the home.

CARE/GLAD Financial Literacy Programs. The fraternity’s main focus

during the current administration is on financial literacy. The two major

programs in support of this are: Credit Abuse Resistance Education (CARE) and

Greeks Learning to Avoid Debt (GLAD). These programs are targeted towards

high school and college level students to prepare them for the future. The

fraternity has already reached over 100 schools with the program. The National

Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) has partnered with the fraternity in

this effort.

Kappas on Capitol Hill. Since 2001, Kappa has sponsored a four-day

conference for its members in the nation’s Capitol. The conference is intended

to increase its members’ awareness of the political process through workshops,

seminars and lectures. The event is highlighted by visits to the Capitol and

individual meetings by members with their representatives.

Undergraduate Leadership Institute. A biennial training and skills

enhancement program for the fraternity's top 50-60 student leaders. The

week-long program includes programs on job preparedness, social skills,

grooming, dressing for success, and public speaking; it is complimented by

workshops, presentations, and lectures on leadership skills by top professionals.

The Fellowship Program has successfully produced young Kappas who are

prepared to make the transition to professional life.

iKARE (Haiti Relief Efforts). Led by its undergraduates, this program has

provided support to the devastated regions of Haiti. Through a program called

“Dining with Kappa,” funds have been raised from across the country. To date,

over $40,000 has been donated to Haiti through the CARE and the American

Red Cross.

Big Brothers Big Sisters. In 2009, the Fraternity signed a Memorandum of

Understanding in support of a national partnership with BBBS. Along with

Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi, Kappa will join in recruiting its members

to become affiliated with BBBS as Big Brothers, employees, and volunteers.

OTHER INITIATIVES:Guide Right. Guide Right is the national social outreach program of the

fraternity that provides programming, role models, and mentors for primarily

at-risk youth in communities throughout the country. It is primarily directed

towards male youth at the high school and college levels. More than four

(4) million youth have participated in some type of Guide Right sponsored

program since its inception. The Fraternity’s featured national Guide Right

Program has been its annual Kappa Kamp at the Piney Woods School. The

predominantly African-American country life boarding school located in

Mississippi, is widely considered the prototype of schools of its kind. Kappa has

had a significant presence in the school’s history, including all five presidents

since its founding. KAPPA League. A leadership program for young males that

encourages them to make positive contributions and take leadership roles in their

communities. Kappa League includes various sports programs as well. KAPPA

Scholarship Fund. Provides grants to needy high school graduates to assist in

furthering their education. Since 1990, over 10,000 scholarships have been

awarded to students all over the country.

Holiday Food Drives. Holiday Food Drives are perhaps the oldest formal

program of the fraternity. Chapters provide food, clothing, and toys to low

income citizens in many metropolitan and rural communities throughout the

country. Programs generally take place during the Thanksgiving and Christmas

holidays.

The Auto Show Returnsto Philadelphia

The Automobile Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia (ADAGP)

announces the return of the Philadelphia Auto Show to the Pennsylvania

Convention Center from Saturday, January 29th to Sunday, February 6th.

The event’s Black Tie Tailgate is scheduled for Friday, January 28th.

As one of the largest auto shows in the country, the Philadelphia Auto Show

is vitally important to consumers in the Greater Philadelphia region. In 2010,

nearly 90 percent of attendees in the market for a new vehicle reported that

visiting the Auto Show influenced their next purchasing decision according to

exit surveys. In addition, over the last two decades, the ADAGP has been able to

donate more than $4 million to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, thanks

to the success of the Auto Show and its affiliated ADAGP activities. And, it will

proudly continue its philanthropic contributions this year. For every ticket

purchased for the 2011 show, $2.00 will be donated to the Auto Dealers CARing

for Kids Foundation, which provides new winter coats to underprivileged chil-

dren through its Driving Away the Cold program and contributes funding to

worthwhile child-related organizations, such as Children’s Hospital, throughout

Emphasizing the theme of “something for everyone,” the Philadelphia Auto

Show will again offer guests the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane

with two vintage vehicle displays, as well as vehicles from the Simeone

Foundation Automotive Museum, which will bring pieces from its world-class

collection of some of the rarest and most significant race cars ever built to the

2011 show.

Last but certainly not least, Auto Show festivities traditionally kick off with the

annual Black Tie Tailgate, which is set for Friday, January 28, from 7:00p.m. to

11:30p.m. at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. At this event, guests are

invited to take a first look at the hundreds of exotic cars, classic automobiles,

new production vehicles, concept models and tuners on display at the

2011 Philadelphia Auto Show. The menu for the evening will be designed by

Stephen STARR Events and entertainment will be provided by Jellyroll Dance

Band. Tickets are $200.00 per person and available to the public at

Research at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Maria Pajil Battle, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs and Marketing,

Delaware Valley Most Influential Latinos on November 30. Pajil Battle was

honored with 50 other Latino business and community leaders from throughout

the region.

For the last five years, Impacto Latin Newspaper, along with

the Philadelphia Multicultural Affairs Congress (MAC) and other Latino

organizations, has been recognizing the accomplishments of outstanding Latinos

across the region at the annual “Delaware Valley Most Influential Latinos”

event. Candidates are nominated by their peers and selected by a

distinguished committee.
