My most memorable moments of 2011 JANUARY 2011 After much anticipation Sparwood

launched its new branding. Yours & Mine. Together. Unlike many community brands, Sparwood’s brand has not been developed primarily to increase tourism or attract des-tination visitors. Rather, its brand develop-ment is to strengthen its distinctive char-acteristics, demonstrate a desire to con-tinue to develop economic diversity, and to continue to provide a solid foundation to increase community spirit.

“We’re an incredible community,” says Terry Melcer, Sparwood’s Chief Administrative Officer. “We want to clear-ly tell that story.” Sparwood’s newbrand simply tells a historic and contemporary story of a strong, authentic, hardworking mountain community. The brand speaks in a fresh manner to unpretentiousness; a proactive approach to developing relation-ships; and pride in the industry, community relationships and recreational opportun-ities afforded by their location.

FEBRUARY 2011Elkford held its 15th Annual Sled Dog

Derby. The Derby is one of Elkford’s big-gest events of the year and attracts

visitors from all over the world. Fifty sled teams competed this year and the furthest team traveled from the Yukon. One of the World Champion teams from The Streeper Kennels attended for the first time.

Sparwood Secondary School is Students and staff of were abruptly startled on the afternoon of February 21 after the SSS staff were notified that a student in the school had a handgun in his backpack. SSS went into a full school wide lock down. Due to the close proximity, Frank J Mitchell Elementary School was also in full lockdown. Sparwood Secondary School Principal Jason Tichauer stated, "This is the first time our school has experienced an incident of this nature. Immediately, we went to intercept the student and ascertained that he had in fact left the building. The school went quickly into a level one lockdown where classes resumed as normally as possibly but students were not allowed to leave the building for any reason and visual contact with the grounds were blocked. We prac-tice lockdown drills on a regular basis and our students and staff followed protocol

smoothly and professionally. We feel that at no time our students were in any danger and hope and pray that they never will be. We believe that if we err, it must be on the side of safety."

MARCH 2011Black Rock News commemorates one

Year of Crime Reports with a special sec-tion where Elk Valley RCMP Members were interviewed and introduced the public.

The Sparwood Fish & Wildlife Banquet & Trophy Presentation was at full attendance as it was the first trophy presentation in years. This event held a special significance in presenting historical and memorable trophies and encouraging the participation of youth hunters. Matt Huryn, president of the Sparwood Fish and wildlife club esti-mates that over 150 members attended.

MAY 2011 For Sparwood Mayor David Wilks, one chap-

ter was now closed as another was opened when Council bid farewell to their Mayor and congratulated Wilks’s on his new role as MP during his last official Council Meeting. Wilks thanked Council for their kind words and spoke of his new position. “I have had the privilege of working for Sparwood for the past eight and a half years,” says Wilks. “This will be my last official council meeting and I am proud and humbled of my successes as being elected as MP,” he noted. “This was a once in a life time oppourtunity and I couldn’t let it go.”

Twenty -three Elkford, Fernie and Sparwood grade eleven and twelve students had the oppor-tunity of a lifetime participat-ing in the Elk Valley’s Project Heavy Duty 2011. With incred-ible sponsorship and numerous skilled and dedicated volunteers students gained knowledge in various aspects of safety train-ing / certification and equip-ment operation.

AUGUST 2011Sparwood receives their new fire truck that

will service Sparwood and the extended areas north of Sparwood. Karl Ehrler, Sparwood's acting Fire Chief, explains some of the special features. "The truck has four wheel drive, it is capable of holding 1800 gallons of water and also has a water bladder which can hold the 1800 gallons in the event that there is no water source, the truck then will act as a water hauler. Also, the truck is equipped with a pump so water can be drawn from a creek or pond," he notes.

The truck has taken almost a year to be built. It's chassis was built in the United States and the rest of the truck was assembled in Red Deer. The cost of the unit was approximately $320,00 and it has a service life of twenty years. It was purchased in full from the Regional District from mine tax funds.
