BURN IT DOWN

Page 3: Black Apple Ezine September Edition

The cycle repeated As explosions broke in the sky

All that I needed

Was the one thing I couldn't find

And you were there at the turn Waiting to let me know

We're building it up

To break it back down We're building it up

To burn it down

We can't wait

To burn it to the ground

The colors conflicted

As the flames, climbed into the clouds

I wanted to fix this But couldn't stop from tearing it down

And you were there at the turn

Caught in the burning glow

And I was there at the turn Waiting to let you know

We're building it up

To break it back down We're building it up

To burn it down

We can't wait

To burn it to the ground

You told me yes

You held me high

And I believed when you told that lie I played soldier, you played king

And struck me down, when I kissed that ring

You lost that right, to hold that crown

I built you up, but you let me down So when you fall, I'll take my turn

And fan the flames

As your blazes burn

And you were there at the turn

Waiting to let me know

We're building it up To break it back down

We're building it up

To burn it down

We can't wait To burn it to the ground

When you fall, I'll take my turn

And fan the flames As your blazes burn

We can't wait

To burn it to the ground

When you fall, I'll take my turn

And fan the flames

As your blazes burn

We can't wait

To burn it to the ground

As far as Metal Masquerades go I could tell from the start that a modicum of participation could be expected here. Something you would consider at the forefront of your mind really, where ''Masquerades'' are concerned. And a modicum of participation was received, thankfully lending justification to the cause. A heavy metal show with all the social flare and grace of a masked masquerade with an anonymous and sexy audience. "Metal Masquerade @Schivas Rock". Since all gigs of any genre as always start with the unglamorous grunt work of setting up and sound checking it provides the perfect time to relax in your surroundings, have a drink or two and ''take in'' what might prospectively await within the nights entertainment. The crowd turnout and participation actually quite surprised me. So often the 'theme' of an evening gets ignored and lost in translation but noticing within the crowd I saw several attempts at ''Masquerading'' flair being shown, while the reflective crowd response in return to the rabble rousing of the band leaders banter all went down really well and was quite well received, creating a fun atmosphere for all the bands involved. Of which, were 6 of South Africa's newest hopefuls to the throne and crown of ''S.A Heavy'' A mix of modern and old sounds emerging on the scene, some falling into the latter category of ''scene core'' even, but to no surprise, the bands managed to mix it up and offer an evening of modern metal sounds with neo-classical heaviness, which can somewhat divide the audience these days but it formed an eclectically heavy mix for the night. Which Started with set openers...

'Bombs and Issues'

I remember thinking I had seen this band somewhere before perhaps, either that, or they perhaps sounded quite popular by way of style. Either way the gathering crowd seemed pumped up to react and the band performed quite a gratifying set for the fans in attendance, who all got the sweat flying and set a high standard from the starting blocks, technically eschewing tank sized distortion with heavily melodic shades segueing the bands songs into one seamless musical punch to the face.

'Craving Sanity'

'Craving Sanity' were the surprise ''blow me away'' element of the night, reaching out with a musical left, right combo attack that bludgeoned and slammed its way through the crowd support and left them sweaty and ruffled and pretty much begging for more. An unspoken (more chanted) request, which was received, very well by the band as their set continued with explosive sonic force and a 'cool factor' that places this band in the upper echelons of local heavy bands.

'Vortex'

Ladies with fiddles and guitars playing heavy metal like it was going out style. It works well as we all know and many female heavy metal luminaries such as Christina Scabbia, Angela Gossow, Tarja Turunen have all paved this path with feminine flair and turned it into a cultural fusion of old school and nu school styles. Mixed and merging traditional and contemporary sounds to form delicately heavy blend that is fairly hard to achieve. Yet that aside, 'Vortex' achieve this quite confidently and leave the impression that they too, as a band, will have a greater musical output to come!

'Adorned in Ash'

'Adorned In Ash' represents an ominous musical cloud of sorts. Equal parts grace and thorny abrasiveness. This band really takes you from one strength to a higher strength as the cloud parts to reveal tiny little details of musical colour and texture...lots of contour of design...All brought together to form the full contour of 'A.I.A''s music. Which tends to present a sound more rooted in the more classical and traditional heavy metal sounds, relying on riff structure, song writing and melody that harks back to bands like Iced Earth yet with a more modern 'push' through the vocals and guitar melodies, that really brings to mind the suggestion that this is a really strong and smart band that undoubtedly have yet to discover the true beauty and art that lies within the bands talents. Definitely a band to keep an ear on!

'Lane Evermore'

Lane Evermore, were second to last, and individually showed up halfway through the evening looking like a synchronized gangster crew from a John Woo action film. But true to Masquerade form, had entered in style none the less. Their set was an eclectic display of their sound, which I’d remark as having heavy tones mixed in with more subtle sounds, and shades that might have me tag them as 'drone-core' to a point. Which id hate to tag them as that though as I got into them from the first song of their set and it didn’t wane throughout.

'Arch Bishop'

Arch Bishop was the musical nightcap for the evening. Never heard them, or of them, which is always exciting because it leaves open the possibility of pleasant surprise. But I wasn’t surprised when told they were the 'new guys' of sorts onto the circuit. With this in mind I can relate to the fact that new bands develop newer and newer material on a weekly basis. And great potential exists within this unit to hone and get heavy. As a roundup I’d say this was probably one of the most laid back and fun nights to be part of such an elaborate gig event. The theme brought out a touch of grandness to the occasion and although not a masquerade in the classic Venetian senses...this isn’t a classic Venetian affair...this is Heavy Metal baby!!! And a pretty first-class example there of.

On 5 September 2012 Energy Related played their very first show at Tanz Café in Johannesburg, which was organised by Wire Sound Studio

The evening turned out to be a great success and a very memorable one for Energy Related since it was their first show.

Energy Related got the opportunity to share the stage with some of the other artists on the Wired Sound Studio Label such as Ceinwen, Sub – Urban Roots and The HBC rap crew

Energy Related stepped out on stage at 9:00pm with full confidence and played a few songs from their new album titled

“strings of life”.

Energy Related quoted: “The crowd was awesome, our supporters were great and the venue was probably the best I have ever played. Thanks to everyone whom came out and supported Energy Related’s first show and making it a very special evening for us, it was

truly a show that we will always remember and cherish in our hearts. “

Over the coming year South Africa has been promised names such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park and Lady Gaga. If you’re going to all or most of them, then bugger you and your god damned luck. Ner ner. I’m always interested, though, to hear about weird little habits or facets or their pre-fame history that they’d rather not make public knowledge either because it’s downright embarrassing or it doesn’t quite fit in with the image they’re trying to sell us. And so, with Google by my side, let’s begin.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Anthony Keidis lived with his father (who was a struggling actor and drug dealer) in Hollywood from the age of 12. In 1978 Keidis starred as Sylvester Stallone’s son in a movie called F.I.S.T. Now, my dirty mind did terrible things with that movie title, but moreover I giggled at the fact alone. I would consider my fortune faded by that point. Then again, look at his little face...

Linkin Park

Brad Delson, guitarist for Linkin Park, was an extra in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. That is not embarrassing, however. That’s just hands down awesome. I have Googled high and low for dirt on these guys and it was hard. And so, in lieu of that, I’m going to have a little bitch aimed at those who think Linkin Park have ‘sold out’ or are ‘trying too hard to change their sound.’ Quite simply, grow up. If you like the music they made in their earlier years, listen to that. In my opinion they have evolved and grown as they themselves have grown. For the musicians out there, you know what I mean. Are you still playing and writing the music you wrote in your teens? I didn’t think so. Having a static attitude in the music industry will get you nowhere, amigo.

Lady Gaga

Opposite is Stefanie Germanotta. She was... normal. With her battalion of PR wizards she fights on a daily basis to retain her aura of weird and I’m pretty sure that if there was any chance she could erase this from the collective consciousness, she would. But normal is boring, so kudos to the girl. The girl and her $millions. Go to bigconcerts.co.za for ticket information on all of the above: http://www.bigconcerts.co.za/current

the footy. She’s not sorry.

Page 17: Black Apple Ezine September Edition

Why did you want to become a solo artist?

I became a solo artist to have the freedom to write and compose my own music the way I feel and not to be bound to a specific genre or style of music. Being a solo artist also makes it easier to make my own decisions and to follow the vision that I have in my mind. Also being a solo artists opens a lot of opportunities for me as a musician to be able to play my music whenever and wherever I feel like it for example busking on the streets or in parks and playing in venues such as coffee bars, food restaurants. Being a solo artists is also a good way for me to guarantee that my music will go on forever no matter what happens.

What makes a solo artist different from playing in Energy Related, as it was a solo project in the beginning?

Energy Related is another one of my solo projects backed up by session musicians. It’s not that the music is bound to a specific genre or that it doesn’t give me the freedom to collaborate with other artists. My solo career is basically keeping all my songs I have ever written alive. So when I have a full house band backing my songs the whole family becomes Energy Related. Apart from Energy Related I have my freedom to go out and play my music whenever and wherever I feel like to continue promoting the music and to pursue the mission.

Tell us more about your solo album titled Fire within, when did you decide to start the album?

I decided to make this album while I was recording with Energy Related to take 8 of my favourite song from the “Strings of Life” album and record it as a personal memoir.

What can listeners expect from the album?

A piece of me and the way I look at life and all it has to offer. But it’s not all about me; I like to think that people can learn from my ex-periences and maybe find something good in it for themselves.

Where did the inspiration come for the name of the Album?

The name of the album is inspired by the fact that everybody is connected in some way or another. I believe that music connects peo-ple and can deliver a message more soulfully that talking or reading.

The songs that will be featured on the album?

All the songs are inspired by events that have occurred in my life. Every song was written after or during an experience that changed my life in some way for the better. Take Mother like son, I wrote that song for my mother to say Thank You for all she has done for me and has taught and stood by me in times when things were rough. She taught me to be strong and thankful for everything that I have in my life.

We know that you released the String of Life album with Energy Related - what kind of response did you re-ceive after the release of this album?

The response was amazing; we got a lot of positive feedback from people saying that it delivers a positive message and gave off good feeling. Some even said that it was the kind of album that you could put on repeat and take a long drive somewhere.

Tell us about some of the songs on your album

“She” is written about people realizing that you don’t know what you have till it’s gone. Many people come into your life and then leave again, missing out on stuff after they have felt and always miss being in that space in time were they are included in everything.

“Bluesy Monday” is a song I collaborated with my lady Nat. It’s a song that relates to relationships with partners that work at different times on their passions while keeping a day job and still manage to share everything.

We hear that Energy Related are busy recording a new album - what will be different from the “Strings of life” album compared to the new album?

My guitar and vocals have improved a lot since strings of life so I believe I’m putting out a smoother sound and I’m looking to do a cou-ple of rock songs and adding electric guitar. More life experience has also gone into this album since the first one.

What can fans expect to hear the tracks off this album?

More positive messages that I hope will help someone somewhere to see life in a different perspective for good .My music is there to remind people to appreciate life and to enjoy what it has to offer.

Top 10 Tim Burton Movies

By Sarah Coughlan

With the recent release of the Tim Burton produced Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter and upcoming animation Frankenweenie, I thought I would share with you my top ten all time favourite Tim Burton movies as I am an avid fan of his work.

#10: Corpse Bride Tim Burton has been direction movies since the 80's, but it wasn't until 2005's Corpse Bride that he got around to directing his first full-length animated film. The characters look much like updated versions of the cast from Nightmare Before Christmas. In classic Tim Burton style, creepy is just the word to describe this movie, although it didn't give me shivers like most of his films do.

#9: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Even though he portrayed Johnny Depp as a twisted version of Michael Jackson, the movie was full of classic Tim Burton traits like the mushrooms and twisted trees which also feature in Alice in Wonderland. His new take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory threatened to be a misfire of epic proportions but his instincts ultimately proved both profitable (Charlie grossed nearly $475 million worldwide) and critically successful.

Page 27: Black Apple Ezine September Edition

#8: Ed Wood He's enjoyed more critical acclaim and commercial success than most directors, but it seems fair to say Tim Burton has spent a good portion of his career feeling misunderstood -- which is surely part of what drew Burton to Ed Wood, a biopic of the oft-derided director who gifted the cinema with films such as Glen or Glenda and Plan 9 from Outer Space. He received the full creative control he craved. The result, running more than two hours in deeply unfashionable black and white, was a predictable box office flop, but it resonated strongly with critics, who embraced it

#7: Edward Scissorhands In 1990 Tim Burton had his pick of projects and he chose the one closest to his heart. Granted creative control by Fox, he ran through a list of actors that included William Hurt, Robert Downey, Jr., and Toms Hanks and Cruise before deciding Johnny Depp would be perfect to play the film's central character, the lonely, blade-fingered creation of a mad scientist (Vincent Price). The inclusion of Vincent Price was priceless. Of course, at the time, nobody knew Edward Scissorhands would mark the beginning of a partnership between Burton and Depp that still runs to today.

#6: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a movie that just stays with you. Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice works perfectly and this movie is definitely Tim Burton's creepiest and most wonderfully disturbing creation yet.

5#:Nine In a futuristic kind of world, anything is possible. This movie combines the Industrial ere with the conception of the future which Tim Burton has captured perfectly.

#4: Coraline One of his more recent animation, Coraline captures the imagination but has that ever present creepy undertone of Tim Burton movies.

#3: Sweeney Todd Johnny Depp is Sweeney Todd. Big ups to Burton for choosing depp for the lead role, it would not have been the same without him. Love, vengeance, madness, and lots of blood, what could be more perfect in a Burton movie.

#2: Alice in Wonderland The first of his movies where he had to take 3D into consideration, and it worked perfectly. The colours and classic Burton trees and mushrooms were perfect. He really has a way of taking his audiences into other worlds and in this movie, I really felt as if I was in Wonderland.

#1: Nightmare Before Christmas My all-time favourite Tim Burton movie is Nightmare Before Christmas. From the first time I watched it as a six-year-old child to my twenty-two year old self now, it amazes me every time. Jack Skellington is creepy but somehow weirdly loveable.

The amount of time and work that stop motion involves and how it turned out so well for this movie is perfection in my eyes. To this day, every Christmas Eve, I watch it an love it each time.

Joan Jett The Queen Of Rock 'n Roll By Bron-Hilda Simpson

The genre 'alternative' usually refers to the rock genre but it is a collection name for a variety of styles within a style. It was first heard and named in the 1980's but it became more popular in the 1990's. Many directors have also started. Using alternative music in their movie soundtracks. One of the most popular alternative rockers would probably be Joan Jett.

Joan Jett was born Joan Marie Larkin in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania on September 22nd, 1958. Joan Jett has been singing since 1975 when she started the all girl rock band, The Runaways. She has been labeled the Queen of Rock 'n Roll. The Runaways was documented in a movie: The Runaways. The actress who was chosen to portray Joan Jett was Kirsten Stewart and Dakota Fanning portrayed Cherie Currie. Originally Cherie Currie was the lead for vocals but after leaving the band Joan Jett took over on vocals. Since 1975 The Runaways produced five albums but the band broke up in the Spring of 1979. The movie The Runaways was released in 2010 and it portrayed the story of the all girls rock band 'The Runaways'. They were helped by Kim Fowley who helped them with their rise to fame. The girls soon became popular and the movie revolves around Joan Jett being the girl with the pure Rock 'n Roll heart and Cherie Currie as the sex kitten.

Joan Jett had a solo career as well but soon after she created ' Joan Jett and the Black Hearts. In the past the band members were made up of Lee Crystal on drums, Gary Ryan on bass and back up vocals, Ricky Byrd on back up vocals and guitar and Joan Jett on lead vocals. The current band has Thommy Price on drums, Enzo on bass, Dougie Needles on guitar and Joan Jett on guitar and vocals. The bands first number one hit was 'I Love Rock 'n Roll in 1982 and has been resung over the years. Joan Jett was soon the best rock 'n roll chick of all time.

Some of the movies and shows which had Joan Jett on the Soundtrack between 1976 and 2010 included:

The American Way Light of Day Days of Thunder Highlander Free Fall Dazed and Confused Northern Exposure Striptease Sparkler Boogie Bay Southie Rounders Freaks and Geeks Mary and Rhoda The Fluffer Shrek Dawsons Creek Highway to Hell Queer Eye for the Straight Guy The Wire Port in a Storm

1994, A little blonde, 13 year old girl, with her faded Sepultura shirt, 14 up Dr Martens, and Camo skirt got her hands on a South African compiled album (tape), featuring bands such as “Voice of Destruction (V.O.D)”, “Abhorrence”, “Retribution Denied”, “Debauchery”, “Funeral”, “Gutted Remains” and “Sepsis”, titled “THE DEATH OF AFRICA”. Playing the tape over and over and over again, becoming one of her favourite escapes from the real world and later purchasing the cd. As time passed, as all metal lovers do, she continued buying the latest albums from mutually related International bands like Obituary, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Hypocrisy, Dying Fetus, Hemorrhage, Fear Factory, Sepultura, and with time, she aged and “The Death of Africa” album, and the bands featured, became but a fond memory, never spoken of again. Chantal, now known as CemeterySlut later in life began to DJ at Zeplin’s and not long after, started Nightbreed Dark Entertainment (a Gothic events organizing company), which was reborn as NDE Productions (a DarkWave/Industrial events organizing company). CemeterySlut has always believed that the “Dark” movement in South Africa was under estimated, and vowed to get it recognized internationally, proving to the world that the South African Dark Movement was as alive and brutal as any other country. November 2011, CemeterySlut, met a Metal guy who knocked her off her feet, not long after, he became her romantic partner.

His name, Chris Marx. He was armed with Metal knowledge that most Metal guys double his age didn’t possess. CemeterySlut, impressed by this, was inspired by him, and decided to start a Metal inspired side project for NDE Productions called NDE:KVLT, whom she later decided is well deserving of being appointed co-owner at NDE:KVLT . One day, when conversing about current local Metal bands, told him of the local bands she grew up with such as Groinchurn (whom she is close friends with), V.O.D, Agro (formerly known as Agro Grannies), Sepsis, Retribution Denied, Debauchery, etc. This led to a conversation about that one album she so loved “The Death of Africa”. Chris was not familiar with the album, due to it being released when he was merely 3 yrs old. Most newcomers in the scene, born in/after 1990 are sadly unfamiliar with the bands, splits and compilations that were released shortly after they were born. A very intrigued Chris went home and did research on all the bands and albums named and not only discovered some rare findings, but also discovered that he studies at the company who originally compiled and released “The Death of Africa”, Inhouse Records. Reporting back to CemeterySlut with this auspicious discovery, they spoke of and agreed to the possibility of potentially releasing a “Death of Africa (Volume 2)” under leading labels: NDE Productions, NDE:KVLT and Marx Audio Productions.

Page 33: Black Apple Ezine September Edition

This led to a discussion with “Inhouse Audio Training/Productions @ Ankha Productions”, who instantly agreed with the concept, and their association, nearly 20 YEARS after the very first Volume. Inhouse Records,is the label who made it possible for the first Death Of Africa to exist, nearly 2 decades ago, who in the past worked with bands such as V.O.D, Napalm Death, Diabolic Intent and many more, along with NDE Productions, NDE:KVLT and Marx Audio Productions, have decided to bring the world: “ The Death Of Africa (Volume 2 )”. To the unfortunate metal heads who never heard of it… It was Brilliant local Death Metal compilation released when some were still potty training, therefore, it was never even known by these individuals who are now adults. There are very few who share the memory of this almost legend… some of them never thought that one day, THEIR names would appear on Volume 2. It was unimaginable, until now.

We, CemeterySlut and Chris (and all the companies involved) want to reintroduce the thought, and prove that

South African and African Metal is world class! Inhouse Productions, along with associates; Marx Audio Productions, NDE Productions and NDE:KVLT releasing “The Death Of Africa (Volume 2)” have decided to put a slight twist to it. Since it’s “The Death of Africa (Volume 2), we thought it would be great to incorporate an African theme. I would imagine calling something like that “Tribal Death”, if I had to name it myself. You can classify genres easy by listening to (Brazilian Metal) with your groove influences and Swedish Death metal as well as Norwegian black metal for example that is where we want the sound of (African Metal) so that you can tell a band different and unique from every other norm set in the world and people would know that they are listening to South African/African Death/Thrash/Grind/Black/Extreme Metal. and say that is African Metal. There will be other little interesting goodies, which will remain a secret until the release of this Metal marvel. If i tell you, I’m going to have to kill you.
