SOLEMN BLESSING STAND

We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all angels cry aloud, the heavens and all the powers therein. To thee cherubin and seraphin continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee. The noble army of martyrs praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee: the Father of an infinite majesty; thine honourable, true and only Son; also the Holy Ghost the Comforter.

Thou art the King of glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints in glory everlasting.

O Lord, save thy people and bless thine heritage. Govern them and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify thee; and we worship thy name, ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in thee. O Lord, in thee have I trusted; let me never be confounded.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN

1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!

O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation.

All you who hear, now to his altar draw near;

join in profound adoration.

2. Praise to the Lord, let us offer our gifts at the altar.

Let not our sins and transgressions now cause us to falter.

Christ the high priest bids us all join in his feast,

victims with him on the altar.

3. Praise to the Lord, who will prosper our work and defend us;

surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend us;

ponder anew what the Almighty can do,

who with his love will befriend us.

4. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in us adore him!

All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!

Let the Amen sound from his people again,

now as we worship before him.

COMMUNION HYMN

Refrain By your priestly power, O risen Lord, all we lost and needed is restored. God in our communion be adored.

1. At your hands, Lord, we are fed, Hands that guide and do not falter, Wounded hands that broke the bread On this altar.

2. At your hands we seek release From the evils that assail us, For we know the Bread of Peace Will not fail us.

3. In the world that we have known; Selfish, loud, vain passions riot; Lord, with you, with you alone Is deep quiet.

4. To that world we must return Sharing in its hope and labour, Bringing to it Christ’s concern For our neighbour.

Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine cuius latus perforatum fluxit aqua et sanguine: esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O Jesu dulcis, O Jesu pie, O Jesu, fili Mariae.

Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, having truly suffered, sacrificed on the cross for mankind, from whose pierced side water and blood flowed: Be for us a foretaste [of Heaven] in the trial of death! O sweet Jesus, O holy Jesus, O Jesus, son of Mary.

ORDINATION OF THE BISHOP-ELECT

With grace celestial animate the hearts you did yourself create.

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator make your people’s souls your home:

1.

HYMN TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Text: attrib. Rabanus Mauru c.776—856.

Music: Plainchant Mode VIII & Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548—1611).

The assembly sings the odd-numbered verses; the Schola sings the even-numbered verses.

As sevenfold your gifts expand, you, the finger of God’s right hand:

The Father’s promise well fulfilled, your truths in us you have instilled.

4. Accende lumen sensibus: infunde amorem cordibus: infirma nostri corporis virtute firmans perpeti.

Our minds enkindle with your light, within our hearts your love excite: endue our members frail with strength of yours that can never fail.

Far keep from us our ancient foe, without delay your peace bestow:

3.

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Archbishop God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all consolation, who dwell on high and look upon the lowly, who know all things before they come to be, and who laid down observances in your Church through the word of your grace; who from the beginning, foreordained a nation of the just, born of Abraham; who established rulers and priests and did not leave your sanctuary without ministers, and who, from the foundation of the world, were pleased to be glorified in those you have chosen:

The following part of the prayer is sung by all the consecrating Bishops, with hands joined:

Pour out now upon this chosen one that power which is from you, the governing Spirit, whom you gave to your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, the Spirit whom he bestowed upon the holy Apostles, who established the Church in each place as your sanctuary for the glory and unceasing praise of your name.

The Archbishop continues alone:

Grant, O Father, knower of all hearts that this your servant, whom you have chosen for the office of Bishop may shepherd your holy flock. Serving you night and day, may he fulfil before you without reproach the ministry of the High Priesthood, so that, always gaining your favour, he may offer up the gifts of your holy Church. Grant that, by the power of the Spirit of the High Priesthood, he may have the power to forgive sins according to your command, assign offices according to your decree, and loose every bond according to the power given by you to the Apostles. May he please you by his meekness and purity of heart, presenting a fragrant offering to you through your Son Jesus Christ, through whom glory and power and honour are yours with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever and ever.

All Amen

LAYING ON OF HANDS

The Archbishop lays his hands upon the head of the Bishop-elect, in silence. After him, all the other Bishops present do the same.

Each line is sung by the Schola and repeated by the assembly.

1. From the clear celestial height, shed on us your radiant light.

2. Deep refreshing peace bestow; grant us comfort in our woe.

3. Give us grace to do your will, and our inmost being fill.

4. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; bend our hearts to turn to you.

5. Teach us how to walk your way; turn our darkness into day.

6. On our dryness pour down dew; guide us when we stray from you.

7. In your sev’nfold gifts descend; give us joys that never end.

THE BOOK OF GOSPELS

The Archbishop places an open Book of the Gospels upon the head of the Bishop-elect.

6. Per te sciamus da Patrem,

noscamus atque Filium;

Teque utriusque Spiritum

credamus omni tempore.

Through you may we the Father know,

the Son’s effulgence deign to show:

in blessing you from either sent,

may our eternal years be spent!

Be our guide: forestall the many ills that our path entrall.

To God the Father, to God the Son, who over death the victory won

To both and to the Paraclete, we raise our hearts with thanks replete. Amen.
