Flower – the structure of an angiosperm plant that contains the male and female reproductive organs.
Function of the flower is toProduce S E E D s!
Where do you find a flowers?
……at the enlarged end Of the
stem called the flower stalk or pedicel.
Parts of the flower
Pistil- female reproductive part of the flower
Includes:1. Stigma – sticky top surface where the pollen sticks
2. Style – long tube that connects the stigma and the ovary
3.Ovary – houses the ovules that contain the embryo. The ovary develops into the fruit that provides nutrients for the developing embryo.
4. Ovule – contains the egg cell and when fertilized contains the developing embryo. The ovule becomes the seed.
ovules
Stamen – male reproductive part of the flowerIncludes:1. Anther – where one finds the pollen grains
2. Pollen – contain the sperm nuclei
3. Filament – the long stalk that attaches the anther to the receptacle
Other important parts of a flower:
1.Receptacle – the base of the flower
2. Sepals – small green leaves that house the developing bud (flower). Collectively called the calyx.
Other important parts:
3. Pedicel – the end of the stem where the flower is found
4. Petals – colorful structures surround the reproductive parts of flower and attract insects. Collectively called corolla.
Complete and Incomplete Flowers
Complete flowers A flower that has all of the normal flower parts, namely, the sepals, petals, stamens, and pistil.
Complete and Incomplete Flowers
Incomplete flowers An incomplete flower is missing one of the four major parts of the flower, the stamen, pistil, petals, or sepals. Examples: the oak family, the birch family, and the walnut family
Incomplete Flower – Beech
Incomplete Flowers
Example: Poinsettia
lacks petals – red Is actually leaves calledBracts.
Perfect vs. Imperfect Flowers
Perfect flowers Flower with both sexeshas both stamens and pistilsMay lack sepals or petals.
Perfect flower
Perfect vs. Imperfect Flowers
Imperfect flowers lack either stamens or pistils, and may or may not have sepals or petals.
Types of Imperfect Flowers
1. Pistillate FlowerIs a female flowerHave a functional pistil, but either have no stamen at all, or have stamens with anthers that are incapable of producing pollen.
example: corn ears
Types of Imperfect Flowers
2. Staminate Flower Is a male flower Have functional stamens capable of producing pollen, but either have no ovary at all, or an ovary which is not fertile.
Example: corn tassels
Types of Imperfect Plants
1. Monoecious -
Said of a plant species in which all individuals bear both staminate and pistillate flowers,
Types of Imperfect Plants1. Monoecious -
For example:Oaks—with male flowers in catkins, producing wind-borne pollen,
Types of Imperfect Plants1. Monoecious -
For example:
Oaks—with male flowers in catkins, producing wind-borne pollen, and female flowerson the stems, producing acorns.
Types of Imperfect Plants1. Monoecious -
Ex. Also corn –tassel = male and ear = female but
on same plant
Types of Imperfect Plants
2. Dioecious -
said of a plant species which has some individuals which bear only staminate flowers,
and some which bear only pistillate flowers,
Types of Imperfect Plants
2. Dioecious -
and there are no perfect flowers.
These are the species that are commonly referred to as having male and female plants.
Flower Arrangement
Some have a single flower on each stalk like a rose.
Most are inflorescence which have clusters of flowers.
