Sarah Lincoln and Thomas Lincoln, who died very young. They are Abraham Lincoln’s brother and sister. His stepmother was Sarah Bush Johnston.

character.One of the most important people in his life was his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. Sarah, his stepmother, encouraged Abraham to read.• Early CareerYoung Lincoln migrated to the small community of New Salem, Illinois where over a period of years he worked as a shopkeeper, postmaster, and eventually general store owner. That made him popular with the locals.

• Vice – President Hannibal Hamlin was the 15th Vice President of the United States (1861 – 1865), serving under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. He was the first Vice President from the Republican Party.

• Important events/acts that occurred during the Presidency March 4, 1861 Abraham Lincoln is inaugurated as the sixteenth President of the United States, and the nation’s first Republican President. November 1, 1861Following General Scott’s retirement, President Lincoln names George McClellan, a West Point graduate, as new commander of the Union Army. McClellan proved to be an extremely cautious general. His inability to win decisive battles frustrated Lincoln, and was replaced by Ulysses S Grant. February 20, 1862 William Wallace ( Willie) Lincoln died from typhoid fever. He was the second son the Lincoln’s lost. December 8, 1863Lincoln offered a full pardon to Southerners who took the prescribed oath to the Union.

The Confederate Army and commander, Robert E. Lee, surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union Army.Lincoln was the first American President to be assassinated, though an unsuccessful attempt had been made on Andrew Jackson 30 years before in 1835. The assassination of Lincoln was planned and carried out by wellknown stage actor John Wilkes Booth, as part of a larger conspiracy in a bid to revive the Confederate cause.
