Step 1: Review Bike Friendly CriteriaWondering what’s required to be Bike Friendly Certified? On the following page view the Programme Criteria and recommended bike friendly amenities for your business. Any business that is able to meet programme criteria is eligible for certification.

Step 2: Submit your ApplicationApply for certification online at bicyclesouth.org/bike-friendly/

Select your membership benefits & your business marketing exposure:

• Standard Membership @ R 1 200. Your business is certified & listed on ourplatform for 1 year. Includes a Standard Directory Listing & full benefits.

• Featured Membership @ R2 500. Your business is certified and listed on ourplatform for 1 year. Includes a Featured Directory Listing (highlightedwith priority placement on website), full benefits & newsletter shoutout.

REQUIRED AMENITIES

1. Long-term Bike Parking. Covered and secure bike storage area for employees or tenants. Preferably a bike storage room or bike lockers or bike shed/cage with bike racks and limited access. Alternatively provision for cyclists to park bikes in their office or co-working space.

2. Short-term Bike Parking. May be acceptable in some cases (i.e. for small businesses or visitor parking). Special attention must be paid to proximity to entrances, protection from the elements and potential theft

3. Bike Repair Kit. Basic tools with bike pump

RECOMMENDED AMENITIES• Commuter facilities - showers, change rooms with lockers. Alternatively organise employee access to facilities or gyms in nearby buildings.

• Bike Repair Stand or Station

• Bike Cleaning Station or area to wash bikes

• Workplace shared bikes that staff / tenants can use for commuting or non-commute trips, like errands and recreational outings

• Electric Bicycle charging points best located next to bike racks

• Make deliveries by bike or use bike couriers

The Bike Friendly criteria for workplaces focus on amenities that make cycling to work convenient and comfortable, and policies and practices that support and encourage employees to commute by bicycle.

The following guide outlines best practice for cycling infrastructure & policy to assist you to implement the most bike friendly solutions.

LONG-TERM BIKE PARKING

What makes a good bicycle parking space?

• Each space is a minimum of 0.6m x 2m

• Includes a rack that can be floor-mounted or to save space, vertically-mounted.

• Ensure racks are securely fixed, durable, theft resistant & don’t damage the bike.

• Racks should support the bike in a stable position, preventing it from falling & providing locking points for the frame & wheels (two points of contact are best).

• Avoid racks that don’t allow locking of the frame and place stress on wheels e.g. cheap floor stands (or wheelwells). Adequate for home storage, these aren’t secure enough for public parking.

Long-term parking is intended for use over several hours or overnight & should be located within secure areas with limited access and protect the bikes from the elements. An area that can be monitored by staff or security cameras will further reduce the possibility of bike theft.

Solutions include: Bike Cages or Sheds, Bike Lockers or Storage Rooms fitted with bike racks.

SHORT-TERM BIKE PARKING Short-term bike parking (“Class 2 or Class B” bke parking) is designed to be used for a few minutes up to a couple of hours. As a result, it should be easily accessible and fitted with racks for secure locking of bikes. Where possible, racks should be protected from the weather. For convenience, they should be located as close as possible to the entrance used by cyclists or inside the property or building. Having racks visible from the destination, reassures cyclists about their bike’s safety.

This space should include rags, eco-friendly degreaser or bike cleaner, and a water hose or bucket. Installing a bike rack or stand to support the bike makes cleaning it much easier.

BIKE REPAIR STANDOR STATIONA Bike Repair Stand holds a bicycle off the floor, allowing cyclists to easily make repairs or adjustments to parts that are harder to access, or clean the bicycle’s drivetrain. A Bicycle Repair Station combines a Bike Repair Stand with a Bike Repair Kit. Tools can be attached with cablesto the Station or kept separately. The station can be wall-mountedor freestanding and a floor pumpcan also be included.
