3 Details of Chapter activities since last report March 2011-February 2012

3.1 March 08, 2011, Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, BGU

Familiarity tour at Ilse Katz Institute labs, located at Ben-Gurion University. Number of participants – 10.

3.2 March 08, 2011, Lecture of Prof. Neil Collings, BGU Prof. Neil Collings from University of Cambridge, England, gave a lecture on "Liquid crystal spatial light modulators for holographic projection and telecomms switching". Number of participants – 17.

3.3 March 09-10, 2011, OASIS 2011, Tel – Aviv

The 13th Meeting on Optical Engineering and Science in Israel. The chapter’s members have participated in the poster session and oral presentaions. Number of participants – 11.

3.4 March 22, 2011 Hebrew Optics, Jerusalem

An academic and social event of the Israeli OSA chapter’s members and BGU SPIE student chapter members, organized by HUJI OSA Chapter. https://sites.google.com/site/hebrewoptics/ Number of participants – 11 people from our chapter out of 50 participants at the event.

3.5 April 10, 2011, Orbotech tour, Yavne

Academic tour at Orbotech. Orbotech designs, develops, manufactures, markets and services automated optical inspection (AOI) systems for bare PCBs, FPDs, and imaging solutions for PCB production. Number of participants – 11 people

3.6 May 16, 2011 Optics and Photonics day , BGU

3.7 May 24, 2011 OSA-SPIE meeting, BGU Number of participants – 5 people from our chapter.

3.8 May 24, 2011 Lecture of Miri Gelbaor, BGU

The lecture "Photo alignment of nematic liquid crystals on nano-dimensional Chalcogenide films" was given by Miri Gelbaor, BGU SPIE chapter secretary, during chapter meeting. Number of participants – 7 people.

3.9 June 20, 2011, IKI (Ilse Katz Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology) day, BGU

The chapter’s memebers have participated in the poster session. Number of participants – 10 people from our chapter.

3.10 June 27, 2011, Lecture of Prof. Kopeika, BGU

The lecture "Relatively inexpensive imaging at THz frequencies” was given by Prof. Kopeika, from the department of Electrical and Computer engineering, unit of Electro Optics engineering, during chapters meeting.

Number of participants – 7 people.

3.11 August 20-25, 2011 Optics and Photonics, San-Diego Alina Karbachevsky, our former president, represented our chapter at the student chapter leadership workshop.

3.12 October 11, 2011, EL-OP tour, Rehovot

Elbit Systems Electro-optics - Elop ("Elop") produces electro-optics (EO), from Laser and Thermal Imaging systems to Head-up Displays, through ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) systems for space, airborne, naval and ground-based missions. http://www.elbitsystems.com/elbitmain/elop

3.13 November 10, 2011, Lecture of Prof. Raúl José Martín Palma, BGU

Prof. Raúl José Martín Palma, a professor of physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain), out of the SPIE lecturer directory, gave us a lecture entitled: "Nanostructured porous silicon and photonics". A chapter meeting was held after that. Number of participants – 15 people

3.14 December 12, 2012, officer elections and a Chapter Meeting, BGU

Election results are shown in item (1). Number of participants – 9 people

3.15 January 11, 2012 Applied Materials tour, Rehovot

The tour included an introduction to Applied Materials, to new technologies developed at Applied Materials, followed by a tour in the clean room.

3.16 January 25, 2012, A lecture by Etai Rosenkrantz, BGU

Etai Rosenkrants, OSA/SPIE member gave us an overview lecture about Surface Plasmons and Nanoparticles. Light breakfast was served.

3.17 Februery 7, 2012 a lecture by Yitzhak August

Yitzhak August, A chapter member gave us a lecture about Synthetic Aperture Radar Principles with Applications. Light breakfast was served. Participants estimation – 10 people.

4 Activities plan for 2012

1. brainstorming meetings

The chapter members monthly meet to short seminar in one or more of the

research topics they deal with. These meeting are exploited for updates, for

sharing ideas and for future planes. Usually this meeting is held during light

breakfast and coffee.

2. Round table meetings

Chapter officers meet up to discuss upcoming activities, actual events,

coordination, and update their current actions.

3. exploring the galaxy

Organizing visits to some of the leader companies in optics industries. The

tours are planed to wide manifold of industries and to research institutes as

well. Some of the potential places that we plan to visit are detailed in the

table below:

4. meet the experts

Researchers from the state and abroad, industrialists and specialists in the

optical sciences are invited to lectures and presentation to the chapter

members.

5. chapter campaign

To prompt the chapter in the university, marketing and recruitment day will

be held this year to expose new students to the chapter activities and

benefits.

6. all for one and one for all

Social day to all the chapter members will be organized to encourage the

relationships among the students and other colleagues. We set up this week-

end, where we encourage people to join this activity for talking while

enjoying self-prepared dinner and drink together.
