Dear Vikings, Another new and exciting school year is upon us. As we

start the 2012-2013 academic year, I hope the summer afforded everyone: student, parent, teacher, and alumni, the opportunity to relax and unwind. While many think Bishop Verot shuts down for the summer (or at least slows down), nothing could be further from the truth. The faculty and staff of Verot has been hard at work since school let out in May, preparing for another year sure to be filled with great achievements and lasting memories.

As principal, I confess that I always look forward with great anticipation to a new school year. As the date to start school drew near, my enthusiasm grew as I thought about our students, teachers, and families. Sure enough, when the first day of school arrived… students were hugging as they caught up with one another, teachers high-fived students in the hallways, and everyone seemed excited by the prospect of a new year.

To individuals who have not experienced Bishop Verot, this behavior may appear bizarre. It is certainly atypical to see such exuberance shared by teens on the first day of school, but Verot is truly a special place. For me, there can be no better end to the summer!

Trying to identify the one thing that makes this Catholic high school and Viking community special is impossible. It is futile to attempt to identify any one characteristic because the entire experience is special. From Homecoming to Spellamania, the Freshman Retreat to “Live Jesus…”, our various religious programs, and strong academics to athletic tradition, one thing is clear. The spirit of Verot is indeed special. While we may not be able to put our finger on one thing that makes Verot special, I can acknowledge that our Catholic identity shines forth as its central point. His Spirit is evident every day in our classrooms and hallways, radiating through the lives of our faculty and students.

On August 16, we were honored to have Bishop Frank Dewane join us for our first schoolwide Mass of the new year. In his first homily of the school year, he encouraged students to pray for and accept the gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially knowledge and wisdom. He further challenged them to accept the challenge of opening our hearts and serving as the People of God. What better challenge is there for the start of the school year?

Bishop Verot Catholic High School has demonstrated excellence for 50 years. This excellence is not of a single category but, instead, is the result of a collective understanding that the experience of Bishop Verot is one of accepting the challenge of excellence and opening ourselves to His Spirit. Have a great 2012-2013!

landon’s mother, Jennifer wade, and his father luke howell, are verot graduates, class of ‘96 as well as landon’s grandmother terri toggweiler wade, class of ‘73.

it all started in 1969 when bob and elaine toggweiler moved from detroit to fort myers with their large family. there was only one school in fort myers good enough for their children—bishop verot.“we always felt it was critical for our children to receive the best education possible. a good catholic education was essential. we wanted our kids to be surrounded with good people and have the best when it came to education,” elaine says. “we were told bishop verot was that place and over the years it has proved to be true.” there were six original toggweiler children who arrived in fort myers back in ‘69 and the parade of toggweilers continues to grow and march through the hallways of bishop verot catholic high school. bob ‘71, Janet ‘72, terri ‘73, John ‘76 and nancy (norton) toggweiler ‘77, mike ’78, mary ’80 started the toggweiler parade followed by second generation Jenn ’96, ryan wade ‘01, and in recent years casey ‘05, craig ‘09, sean ‘09, robert ‘09, and sarah ‘11. Jenn’s mother terri wade, landon’s grandmother, was one of the original “Terrific Toggweiler’s” that arrived from Detroit in 69.

“bishop verot has given my children and grandchildren great educations but most important good friends and great memories,” said elaine toggweiler, landon’s great grandmother. “verot is a part of my family. we are all excited about landon continuing my family’s loyalty and tradition at bishop verot. i’m sure verot will prepare him for the future as it has so many members of my family. landon will have great opportunities offered him through bishop verot.”

nearly all the toggweiler’s have represented bishop verot in many activities and sports over the years. “landon’s love is soccer,” his mom will tell you. “we have been lugging him around verot events since he was born. now it is his turn to be a viking.”

History is being made at Bishop Verot this fall. For the first time, a third generation representing the Toggweiler family, will be enrolled at Bishop Verot —Landon Howell , Class of 2016.

W ith a week of high school officially under theirbelts, Bishop Verot’s freshmen spent their weekend back at school for the 9th annual freshman retreat.

Nine years ago the administration at Bishop Verot Catholic High School began looking at ways to help freshman ease their way into high school.

“Our freshmen retreat aims to help freshmean students better understand the mission and culture of Bishop Verot while welcoming them into the community” said Matt Burbach, Director of Campus Ministry. “The seniors wanted a way to encourage our newest members to be active and to help them navigate through some of the challenges they faced at that age.”

With the day off from school, freshmen arrived on Friday morning and headed off to community work sites with their senior group leaders. The groups spent the afternoon working at sites before heading home with their group leaders for dinner and small group discussions pertaining to high school life.

Later in the evening, the groups return to Verot to spend the night in the classrooms.

Over 75 Bishop Verot seniors spent their summer planning for the retreat – coordinating service sites for their groups, preparing their talks, and learning the finer points of effectively leading group discussions.

Christina Colon, President of the senior class said, “As freshman we all learned from our senior mentors that Saint Francis de Sales says to ‘be who you are and be that well.’ Our goal is to help the freshmen realize that they can be themselves here at Verot and we are here to help them do that.”

This year Bishop Verot students participating on the retreat contributed over 1,400 hours of community service at 19 service sites throughout Lee County.

The Freshman Retreat concluded with a Mass with faculty, seniors, freshmen and their families in the Anderson Theater at Bishop Verot.

In October 2010, Bishop Verot Catholic High Schoolwas honored with the ranking as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States. This past May, Bishop Verot continued its tradition of academic

excellence with students receiving a pass rate of 89 percent on the 2012 Advanced Placement®.

During the 2011-2012 school year, 156 Bishop Verot students took advantage of one or more the school’s AP offerings with students sitting for a total of 261 exams.

In the past seven years, Bishop Verot students have had an average pass rate of 78 percent while the pass rate for the same 11 AP exams in the state of Florida and nationally were just 48 and 58 percent respectively.

The 2012 Bishop Verot AP test scores mark a 17 percent improvement over scores from May 2011.

Three Bishop Verot AP courses - English Language and Composition, Spanish, and Studio Art had 100 percent of its students score a three or above on the 2012 exam. English Literature and US History had pass rates of 95 and 92 percent respectively.

Unlike other schools where only a few students are selected to take the Advanced Placement Exam, at Bishop Verot all students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the exam in May.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exam. Bishop Verot students can choose from eleven Advanced Placement courses.

sCHoLARs REWARDEDTheir letter arrived in mailboxes midsummer and read, “Congratulations! You have been named to the 2012 Viking Scholar

List.” Eleven Bishop Verot seniors, juniors, and sophomores were named to the Viking Scholar List and were rewarded with a brand new Apple iPad for their scholastic achievements. The iPads are part of a comprehensive strategic initiative with the goal of designing, supporting, and implementing a world-class technology integration plan to empower faculty and students and to maximize the efficiency and efficacy of 21st century education.

On the outskirts of town on a street aptly named Hope Circle, a building stands strikingly distinct from the rest of the landscape with candy cane styled stripes down the front entrance and large, brightly colored letters on the side of the building. The building stands for hope in the community of Immokalee, and after 30 years, the Guadalupe Center has established itself as a hub for programs that promote self-sufficiency and social change.

Stepping through the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee, Bishop Verot alumna Jill Brauer Rhone ‘03 beams with pride as she shows off the bright corridors and neatly decorated classrooms in the early childhood education center. The center is now the largest single-site provider of Early Childhood Educational services in Immokalee. Her head peeks around a corner, “that’s my son’s classroom, I don’t want him to see me,” she says with a grin, “never mind, he saw me.” Rhone’s son, Barron (2), travels with her from Fort Myers to Immokalee each day for school.

Around the time the new building was completed in 2000, Rhone had her first encounter with the Guadalupe Center while in Immokalee for a service retreat as a junior at Bishop Verot. “I could have never imagined at the time that I would be back here working,” she says. “At the time it seemed like Immokalee was so far away, like it was a different place.”

After graduating from Bishop Verot in 2003, Rhone headed to Florida Gulf Coast University with the intention of becoming a teacher. Following a service trip to Costa Rica with Mr. Boulton and a trip to the Dominican Republic, Rhone promptly changed her major to Social Work and upon completion of her Bachelor’s Degree in 2007 started working on her Masters.

Rhone (26) now serves as the Tutor Corps Coordinator for the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee. In a city where 50 percent of families live below the federal poverty guideline and a mere 53% of students who enter Immokalee High School in ninth grade reach their senior year, Rhone and the Guadalupe Center have set their sights on fixing the systematic problems that plague the small agricultural town.

Her pride in both the mission of the Guadalupe Center and the facility is evident as we step outside to the playground for the early education program, “everything here is focused on education in some way.”

graders from neighboring elementary schools. The program is more than just about tutoring though, as coordinator, Rhone ensures that the tutors are on track to both graduate from high school and continue on to college. “In a crowded public school system, our Tutor Corps students have the benefit of a personal advisor,” Rhone explains. The advisor role is critical in assisting students with college planning since nearly one hundred percent of the Tutor Corps students will be the first members in their families to attend college.

“This year we have 62 high school students in the Tutor Corps and 80 of our former tutors currently in college,” Jill says proudly. Getting the students into college is just the first step and they are successful at that, in the past five years one hundred percent of Tutor Corps members have been accepted into college.

The financial pressures of tuition and living expenses can remain a barrier for these students. Through the Naples Children and Education Foundation which runs the successful Naples Wine Fest, the Guadalupe Center and the Tutor Corp program are able to offer student tutors both an hourly wage and a $4,000 grant for college for each year that they work for the program.

Rhone is now looking to expand the program further, increasing the number of Tutor Corp members to 100. This year the program will begin to see applications for Tutor Corp members from students who started off in the early childhood education program. “It’s breaking that vicious cycle of poverty,” Jill exclaims. “And it’s working.”

As Jill looks to grow the Tutor Corp program, she’s also growing her family. Jill and her husband, Braxton, are expecting their second child in November.

commissioned by reverend chris beretta, osfs, principal of bishop verot 2003-2010. the verot cross was dedicated on January 24, 2007, on the feast of saint francis de sales. painted in acrylic by brother michael o’neil mcgrath, osfs, on wood sculpted by kevin kostelnick, the panels of the verot cross bear images particular to our school community.

the verot cross was created in the spirit of the San Damiano Cross, the crucifix famously associated with saint francis of Assisi. The Body of the Risen Christ fills the center portion and is capped off by a halo of imitation golf leaf. he stands as the bridge between the cosmos above, symbolized by the sun and the moon, and earth below, depicted by the gulf of mexico sunset. Jesus, thus, is the center point of all creation, the lord of time and grace.

on either side of christ stand four saints with their traditional attributed. on the left are saint francis and saint claire of assisi, patrons of the various franciscan communities of men and women, including the franciscan sister of allegheny, the first religious order to lead Bishop Verot. Francis, famous for preaching to the birds, is surrounded here by the birds of florida. clare holds the eucharist in a monstrance, a reference to her saving the town of assisi from saracen invasion by

walking the parapets in prayer with the blessed sacrament.

on the right side are saint francis de sales and saint Jane de chantal, patrons of the oblates of saint francis de sales who ministered the bishop verot community from 1983 until 2010.

They are surrounded by flowers and fruits, references to the salesian love for nature and the “little virtues” of kindness, humility, patience, gentleness, and simplicity.

the panel at the tip of the left arm of the cross depicts the school’s namesake, bishop Augustin Verot, the first Bishop of Florida. A

man of great courage and zeal who left his post as a seminary professor in his fifties to come to the southern United States during the civil war era and minister to catholics and men and women of all faiths and on all sides of the divisive issues of his day. he holds the school seal.

at the right arm of the cross stands deacon eric laudeman, OSFS, a member of the Class of 1988 and the first Verot graduate to join the oblates of saint francis de sales. he died tragically in march 2005, just months prior to his priestly ordination. his was the gospel of humility and service.

the back and sides of the cross are starkly simple, painted only in shimmering orange and green, symbolic colors of the state of florida.

ABout HEAD CoACH PHiL DoRncoach dorn is entering his eighth year as head coach of the bishop verot football team. during his tenure, the vikings have had four winning seasons in a row, including a state playoff berth in 2007. numerous players have gone on to play college football during dorn’s eight years at bishop verot. dorn is a graduate of wittenburg university, with a masters degree from ohio state university.

ABout HEAD CoACH DEPAsQuALEcoach depasquale is entering her sixth year as head coach of the bishop verot volleyball team. the vikings have gone undefeated in district play during depasquale’s tenure as head coach, including two appearances in the regional finals and a 53 match regular season winning streak between 2007-10. depasquale is a graduate of indiana university with a master’s degree from florida atlantic university.

ABout intERim HEAD CoACH VoELkERcoach voelker is currently serving as interim head coach for the lady vikings. voelker was named an all-acc player while at the university of virginia where she also held the top hitting percentage for two seasons - 2008 and 2009 as a right-side. voelker served as head coach for the cav 14u team in 2011, assistant coach under depasquale for the 18 fusion elite volleyball team, and head coach for the fusion 17 aau team in 2012. voelker has a ba in sociology from the university of virginia and is a pre-nursing student at florida gulf coast university.

ABout HEAD CoACH Jim Quinncoach Quinn is entering his ninth year as the head coach of the bishop verot swimming teams. the swimming team claimed regional championships in 2007 and 2008 on the girls’ side, and 2008 on the boys’. during his tenure, stephanie peacock ’10 became the only three time state champion in school history, including two state championships (the 500 and 200 freestyle) in 2009.

Coach Reese is entering his fifth year as the head coach of the bishop verot golf teams. in his tenure the boys have claimed three straight district titles and a regional championship in 2009. his teams or individuals have earned two state championship tournament berths. two golfers – chase marinell ’10 and Jack hernandez ’11 have gone on to play golf at the collegiate level – marinell for liberty university and hernandez for fgcu. many other boys have gone on to play at the division 2 and division 3 collegiate level. for the past two years reese has also coached the girl’s golf team. the girl’s have finished as district runner-up both seasons. The girls have played in two regional tournaments.

ABout HEAD mAuREEn stEGERmaureen steger has been the leader of the bishop verot drum line since 2006. the bvhs drum line has performed at such events as the edison festival of light parade, the cape coral columbus day parade, the bobby nichols open parade, and all bvhs varsity football games. steger is a graduate of the University of Michigan and has taught flute in Lee County since 1985. she presently performs with community concert bands, with professional ensembles, and as a music minister. she is the proud band director of the bvhs band and teaches creative photography i, ii and iii.

letter from the director of institutional advancement

BUILDING FOR OUR FUTUREA fresh coat of paint in the classrooms, new students, some new faculty, and the return

of friendly faces, give August a feel of renewal and fresh starts. In the Advancement Department we are looking to a new direction and new programs to help the school meet its financial needs.

FINANCIAL AIDThis year we will re-launch the Adopt-a-Student Fund, reflecting the ever increasing

number of students and families seeking need-based assistance to achieve a Catholic education. This year alone, Bishop Verot will grant over $1.2 million in financial aid during the 2012-2013 school year. Funds to meet the needs for financial assistance are raised through internal efforts each and every school year.

CAPITAL NEEDSBeyond need-based financial assistance, the school is focused on the capital needs of an aging campus. Air handler units

used to cool 60,000 square feet of space in the Nevins Gymnasium and the Santini Center are nearing the end of their intended lifespan. The school has proposed a permanent chiller unit that would assist the school in saving nearly $35,000 in electricity costs annually.

As part of the final phase of the Viking Stadium expansion we are required by the county to replace the entrance facility to the stadium with a new ticket booth, varsity shop, and public restrooms. Fundraising efforts have put us within $50,000 of the total $300,000 needed to start the project and complete the final phase of the expansion.

Increase usage of technology on campus by faculty and students has created demand for a wireless network that can meet the needs of nearly 700 people. Continued development of educational applications on tablets will further increase the demand for a reliable campus wireless network.

ENDOWMENTSAlumni have realized the unique nature of a Bishop Verot education. Memories so fond they have made efforts to ensure

they are made possible for future generations of Vikings. The Spirit of ’74 Fund was created in April 2011 by members of the 1974 football team following their induction into the Bishop Verot Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. These members have invited all their fellow alumni and past parents to join them in creating a fund that will make a Bishop Verot education a reality for all students who desire an strong faith filled educational experience. The principal amount of the fund is already over $60,000 with a goal to double that amount by August 2013.

The Dick Stahl Endowed Fund was created in May 2008 in memory of Dick Stahl, a long time teacher and coach at Bishop Verot and St. Francis Xavier School. The endowed funds have provided $500 per year to students with financial need coming to Bishop Verot from St. Francis Xavier. This fund currently has over $10,000 in principal. The goal is to increase the principal to $50,000 by 2014 to provide assistance for one student each year for all four years of their high school careers. If you would like to be a part of these efforts, please contact me in the Advancement Department.

We recently caught up with Joseph Rakowksi, a 2004 Bishop Verot graduate who released his first published book, The Delivery Cut. The Delivery Cut is a literary-contemporary fiction that follows the protagonist, James Young, through a twisted and turned path at self-realization. it is written in the same mold as the rum diary, by hunter s. thompson, but also invokes a punch to the throat living aspect used in the autobiography life, by keith richards.in the delivery cut, James young is under the pressure to be just like any other ordinary young adult who is seeking higher education to achieve a postmodern American, accomplished and prideful, nine to five. Despite his set path as an incoming law student, James accompanied by a slew of alcohol and chain-smoked cigarettes awaits a future meltdown. surrounded by a fog of commonplace people who strive for unoriginal lives and others who have found them, James searches for a flash of inspiration to discover life as more than a mere existence.with the delivery cut published and two more on the way – bar mate with an anticipated release in 2013 and The Emporium of Dr. Faust in 2014, we wanted to find out from Joe how an author gets his big break in the world of publishing.

Publishing a book is not for the faint-of-heart, the prideful, or writers unwilling to become educated in the language of literary publishers and agents. There are millions of writers and only an infinitesimal number will ever see their name on something they did not self-publish. The odds are stacked against you, go start a blog. If you are still reading then you more than likely are a brazen writer like me.

The world of publishing a first book is extremely multifaceted. Writing the darn thing will be the easy part, enjoy it. In-fact, if you are currently not staring at your finished manuscript, stop reading immediately and get back to writing. No publisher will place any effort in a book “about to be” written. There are enough want-to-be writers at the local Starbucks. They sit there sipping their coffee slowly, waiting on their “great book idea” to come to fruition eventually.

A first time author, depending on genre, needs to have a manuscript between 50,000 and 90,000 words. Before submission, your manuscript needs to be revised, edited, and formatted properly. Your content should be, to the best of your abilities, perfect. It should be your finest work, ready to be read by the world. So what do you do once your manuscript is polished?

Every writer’s first step should be buying a copy of the Writer’s Market. It can be found at your local bookstore for around fifty dollars. The Writer’s Market houses all the information you will need in submitting your manuscript to different publishing houses, literary agents, and independent publishers. Their addresses, their requirements, and genres they accept for review. Once you get your copy, go through it and find the most suitable places for your work.

Next comes the bane-of-existence for all writers, the query letter. A query letter is a one page, single spaced letter selling your idea or convincing an editor to request your entire manuscript. A query letter is not the back cover of your book. You need to explain, in entirety, the plot, the premise, the crux, and the resolution of any conflict in the ending. Prove to them that your book does not suck. Not with grandiloquence or an austere speech, but with the bare bones of your writing. Remember, the editor does not care what you think or feel about your book, you are supposed to love it and consider it your magnum opus. Let your work speak for itself. There are great examples and tips in the Writer’s Market for you to reference. Give it the time and thought you did for your manuscript. This is your golden ticket.

Once your query letter is complete, it is time for you to submit. After that, sit back and hold on. You will hear no, no, and probably more no’s. Do not give up. Rejection is not the end. This is the process.

During the waiting game, use this time to your advantage. Begin attracting a following. Start a website with your work, the more creative the better. If you do hear back and it is good news, be proud, but your work is still far from done. You have contracts, agents, reading, approving, signing, promoting, book reviewers, and building a platform for future readers to follow. You have come this far, do not blow it now. There is knowledge all around you on this process you just need to look.

Peter DoraghPeter Doragh was nominated District Governor Nominee for Rotary District 6960, which encompasses Charlotte, Collier, Desoto, Lee, Glades, Hendry, Sarasota, and Manatee Counties. The nomination placed him in line to become District Governor for the 2014-2015 Rotary Year. As Governor, Doragh will coordinate community and international service projects for the 52 clubs within the District, as well as be responsible for organizing new Rotary Clubs. Doragh is the past President of the Gateway Rotary Club and Fort Myers Rotary South, past Assistant Governor, past District Secretary, and currently serves as part of the leadership committee for District 6960 and acts as District Chairman for Rotary Youth Exchange. Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self”, and the main objective of Rotary International is service to others.

Heather Jelinek Brocklehurst and her husband, Brian, welcomed Hailey June into the family on January 16, 2012. She was 8 pounds 9 ounces and 21 inches long.

2001Dane EagleDane Eagle cruised to an easy win on August 14th over Chris Berardi in the Republican primary for the State Representative 77th District race. Eagle will face Democrat Arvella M. Clare in the general election Nov. 6. Eagle, a real estate broker, won by an almost 3-1 margin, 72 percent to 28 percent.

Shawn Linden and Keri Lause are engaged and will be married on September 22nd. Shawn and Kerri met while attending Bishop Verot and have been dating since their junior year. Keri attended college at the University of South Florida and graduated with a business degree in addition to a degree in interior design from the International Academy of Design and Technology. Shawn attended Hodges University and received a business degree.

Reed BakeRReed Baker signed a contract to play basketball for the Cobras of the ASEAN Basketball League in Bangkok, Thailand. The league is comprised of eight teams from six Asian countries. Baker played basketball at FGCU for three full seasons after transferring from Michigan. After graduation, Baker played professionally for the Konya, Turkey club.

Alumni AthleticsjacquaRd hagen / BoBBy thomasFormer Verot basketball teammates Jacquard Hagan and Bobby Thomas made the move to Wesley College in Dover, Del this fall to play basketball for the Wolverines. Hagan and Thomas join former Bishop Verot assistant coach Dean Burrows, who is the assistant coach for the Wolverines. Before moving to Wesley, Hagan played basketball at Northeast Community College in Norfolk, and was named All-NCCAC. Thomas stayed in the Sunshine State the last two seasons to play at State College of Florida.

stephanie peacockLowering decade-old records seems to have become a theme for University of North Carolina’s Stephanie Peacock. Just months after lowering Janet Evans’ 22-year-old NCAA record in the 1650-yard free at the 2012 NCAA Championships, Peacock took down Evans’ 24-year-old meet record of 8:24.71 in the 800m free. She stopped the clock in 8:24.36 to demolish her seed time of 8:30.97 and the rest of the field. Stephanie would have finished 7th at the Olympics with this time.

chRis johnson / BoBBy BoRhceRingChris Johnson ’03 and Bobby Borhcering ’09 share a common connection: they both are Bishop Verot graduates and both played baseball for the Vikings. The two now share a professional connection, after the Houston Astros traded Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Borchering on July 29th. Probably the first time Bishop Verot grads have been traded for one another.

Chris JohnsonJohnson, who was drafted by the Astros in 2006, made his presence known with the Diamondbacks by hitting a grand slam in his debut against the Dodgers. Johnson has continued to make his presence known with five home runs and 18 RBIs in his first 13 games with the organization.

Bobby BorhceringBorchering made the transition back to third base after playing the outfield the first half of this year with the Diamondbacks. Borchering is hitting .275 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 13 games since joining Double A Corpus Christi.

2007 Alex WhitlockAlex Whitlock received his Bachelor of Science from Florida State University in April 2012, with a major in Economics and a minor in Business Management. Alex will be attending NOVA Southeastern University, Brevard School of Law in the fall.

2010 Lucas SannerLucas Sanner is currently attending the University of Central Florida where he is enrolled in the College of Business Administration. Sanner completed the College’s Cornerstone course last spring which requires students to choose a charity, find out what the needs are within the organization and find a way to assist them with a resolution. Sanner was part of the team Wishing Wand that choose to work with New Hope for Kids, an organization that grants wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses and provides grieving services for children whose parents passed away. The team raised more than $6,000 – four times the amount it set out to raise to send a family to New York for the 4th of July. The efforts of the group brought them first place in the Cornerstone Social Entrepreneurship Competition.
