2014
This Easter 209 brothers and sisters in Christ worshipped the risen Lord with exuberant joy! I hope you were able to join us as we gathered together to celebrate how Christ is risen and we too are raised!
We are raised up and raised out of fears, sin, and darkness, and raised to hope, transformation and shining light!
The light of Christ that has been raised up and it shines brilliantly so that we may catch fire and spread the love and light of Christ throughout the world!
Easter is not only one day, we have 50 days of Easter! 50 days celebrating the new life Christ has raised up in us! For us to have life, we must let Christ breathe upon us and breathe in us. And we must breathe back. Let the Spirit catch us on fire. Let that fire in us be sent forth and not closed off to where God is sending, leading, and equipping us!
We were sent out in our worship on Easter singing “Easter People Raise Your Voices” and we opened our worship this past Sunday singing this also.
If we are Easter people, how do we live it? If Christ is risen, how do we reveal this truth in the world?
Can we feel this joy each day?
This past week we felt the fear the disciples felt locked away and hiding even though Christ had risen. We feel this too, we struggle to know how to feel joy and live as Easter people. Yet, even when
we close ourselves off, Christ enters in and speaks peace, Christ comes and invites us to touch and see His wounds, and Christ breathes upon us the power of the Holy Spirit!
To be Easter People is to let the risen light of Christ catch fire in us and to let the Holy Spirit breath of Christ to catch this fire and spread!
I pray that each and every one of us catches this fire, spreads the power of Christ, and fans the flame through engaging in mission, growing and thriving in faith through study and small groups, and celebrates the risen Christ to fan the flame through worship!

What if each Sunday was Easter?
When we live as Easter people, we live as though each day is Easter!
I hope you will join us to share this Easter Joy, this living Christ, the shining light! Catch Fire and spread the good news! Through these 50 days of Easter and I pray that you will continue joining us for our sermon series “Catch Fire in 50 Days!”
The resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the spark of everything else.
We pray that all may have a fresh encounter with Jesus; and that the power of Christ’s resurrection might again be set loose in the world through the fire of the Holy Spirit within us. Let’s set the world on fire!
In God’s Love, Pastor Beth

Catch Fire"...with music!!
I hope you all enjoyed the music during the Lent and Easter services. Erin and the choir worked very hard to present music that you would sing and enjoy!
Pastor Beth's theme leading up to Pentecost is "Catch Fire". When I pray about this theme, I envision a smoldering fire in all of us, just waiting to burst into flames. I think about what sets me on fire. Mu-sic is on the top of the list!
Does music do that to you? Does hearing a certain song bring you closer to our Lord? Does singing a certain hymn give you a sense of peace and the comfort of God's love? If so, please think about a short-term commitment to sing with the choir. We are a spirit-filled group: filled with love and joy, filled with the desire to sing praises to the Father, filled with the quest to learn the ins and outs of music and musicians, filled with FIRE!!!!
I ask you to consider joining us. The warmer weather and summer vacations can really thin out our ranks Sunday mornings. We need you to help us through these next few months. Who knows? You may like it! We rehearse every Thursday from 7-8 in the Sanctuary. We sing, we pray, and we really have a lot of fun!! Ask any choir member. We LOVE to laugh!!
Catch Fire and join us!!!!
Peace! Barbara Rutherford, Choir Director

This month we are continuing to share information about apportionments and why that amount of money is such a large and important budget item for us. First reason for it's size is that it supports so many initiatives and on going activities for the church. When we give to Bermuda Hundred, most of the money goes to support the ministries of our local congregation. The dollars that make up appor-tionments are considered "First Mile Giving", that is expected of all United Methodists. The power of our apportionments, our collective giving, is that it enables United Methodists to do together what no church, district or annual conference could do alone.
The first funding of apportionments is to support Conference Mission and Ministries. This ap-portionment provides a holistic approach to ministries that seek to disciple people in the Christian faith through existing congregations, new faith communities and ministries that reach beyond the local church. Funds include support for ministries in Virginia and around the world that help children, youths and adults, funding for campus ministries, a unified response to natural disasters and ministries with persons from all walks of life.
The second funding is for Conference Services which funds the operations of the United Meth-odist Center where more than 9,000 attendees meet each year to carry out the mission and ministries of the Virginia Conference. The Board of Ordained Ministry and staff are based in the conference center from which they manage the credentialing process of the clergy in the conference and support the clergy through programs, educational training and family support.
Funds also support the Treasurer's Office who is responsible for handling and safeguarding funds in excess of $30,000,000 entrusted to the conference from local churches and benevolences. The office serves as a resource for local churches in the areas of finance, stewardship, administration and insur-ance, and leads multiple training events throughout the conference.
The Episcopal Office, which is the Bishop's office, is supplemented by providing a parsonage, car and an Assistant to the Bishop.
Next month, we will include information about the balance of the many Virginia Conference Ministries and the Worldwide United Methodist Church Ministries - all funded by your generosity each month. You will be amazed at all the different ministries and missions that we as United Methodist members reach out and touch every day.

Whew! What a week the UMM had the week of Easter. We hosted the Easter Sunday Breakfast, then we had our World Famous Fish Fry the following Wednesday, and if that wasn’t enough, we supported the UMW’s Yard Sale on Saturday. A big thank you. to all the men who helped with the Fish Fry. I won’t try to name them all for fear of leaving someone out. But, we had at least 15 workers and that made everything a lot easier.
At this writing, I haven’t gotten the money and papers back to Stan, so the final tally will have to wait a little longer, but our Gross is $1,118.00. Thank you to everyone who came out and bought fish. Without your support, this would not have been possible. You truly are a great group of joyous people.
Several men came out to help who can’t come to our meetings. I encourage you to do the same in our future projects. Come to the meetings if you can, but if you can’t make the meetings, you are still a Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Man, so come on out and give us a hand. Our next project will be a Cookout on Sunday, May 25th, Youth Sunday. Our next meeting will be May 20th and all men are invited to attend. We usually meet at River’s Bend Grill, but I’m trying to put together something a little different for our May meeting. I’ll let you know later.
God Bless,
Charles Woodard, President

The new projector is installed and the images are clear and the colors are sharp, and there’s no big Yellow spot in the middle of the picture. Everything else that needs to be done will have to wait until the Technol-ogy Fund grows a bit.

I would like to thank everyone who has helped with the Back Pack Program this year. If you have given food, thank you so much! If you have given monetary
donations, thank you! Because of your contributions I was able to buy the extra food needed to complete the back packs each week. I needed both food and
donations to make this possible. I would also like to thank the people who helped me packing the bags and delivering them to the schools. May God Bless you all for blessing others. The last day to turn in food this year for the Back Pack Program is Sunday, June 8th.
If you have an idea for a mission project please contact Pastor Beth or Ann McNinch. My email address is [email protected] Peace be with you, Ann McNinch
Missions
During the school year, our church provides weekend snacks for children who are in need. We now assist ten children at three of the local elementary schools. These items of food are needed: Poptarts, Breakfast and snack bars, Vienna sausages, tuna or chicken salad single servings, ham, ramen noodles, and mac n cheese. Please note that we have plenty of juice boxes, and fruit cups and Chef Boyardee cans. The bin for donations to the Back Pack Program is at the top of the steps just before you enter the Sanctuary area. You are also invited to contribute monetarily to the Back Pack Program. Write your check to BHUMC and put “Back Pack Program” in your check memo. Ann McNinch would like to thank all of you for your generosity with food and monetary donations to the Back Pack Program!

BHUMC has a long history of collecting UMCOR kits to be deliv-ered to Annual Conference. This year's kit is the HEALTH KIT. This effort is led by the UMW, but this year, we want every-one in the church to be involved in the collection and packing process.
Collection of Items We will be gratefully accepting donations of items and monetary donations through May 18. There will be labeled bins at the bot-
tom of the stairs near the Fellowship Hall. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please label your check or envelope with the note “Health Kits.” (Each kit does require a $1 donation for toothpaste purchase.)
Below are the items we are collecting – look at the chart for the first initial of your first name. What a great mission project to donate for each member of the family!
If your first name begins with:
A-E 2 hand towels (at least 15” x 25”)
F-J 2 washcloths
K-O 2 combs (sturdy, at least 8” long) AND 2 metal nail files or nail clippers
P-T 2 toothbrushes (adult) AND 2 bars - bath size soap
U-Z 1 box of band-aids (3/4" to 1" wide) AND 1 box of one-gallon plastic bags
Packing of Items We will invite the entire church to meet during the Sunday School hour (between services) on a Sunday in early June to assemble the Health Kits. The date for this meaningful event will be announced soon.
Please contact Tammy Ritenour and Tabitha Strickler if you have any questions. If you would like further information on Health Kits, visit http://www.umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies/Relief-Supply-Kits/Health

Meeting in the Grundy Parlor on
Sunday, May 18
6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Have you ever said, "I'm going to read the whole
bible!" Only to stop somewhere in Genesis, Deuteronomy, or Numbers feeling overwhelmed and fatalistic about accom-plishing the goal? It is possible to study and read the whole bible and to enjoy every part of it and get a lot out of the experience!
The Disciple class meets on Sundays from 4:00—6:00 PM.

Vacation Bible School
We are very excited to begin preparing for Vacation Bible School June 23-27!
Last year we had 64 children attend VBS with 30 volun-teers making it possible! The year before we had 40 chil-dren at VBS.
This year- we pray God will continue to bring more chil-dren to experience the love of Christ here at Bermuda Hundred! Will you help us make this happen? We're looking for volunteers to lead groups, help in the kitchen, folks to help us gather supplies, people to make calls and send cards. Thank you for being part of making a signifi-cant impact on children and families through VBS!
Stewardship Hello Fellow members of the Bermuda Hundred UMC, your church "Needs You"! We would love to hear from you! Do you have a story about how Bermuda Hundred has Inspired or Encouraged you in your drive to serve God? It may have been in the community, within the church or maybe just maybe, why you came to Bermuda Hundred in the first place! How is Christ making an impact in your life? How is Bermuda Hundred UMC making an impact in your life?
As we look forward to our 60th Anniversary we want to celebrate the ways Bermuda Hundred has touched lives-including yours! We are starting off with stories of all members who like Tina and I have made the decision to come here and join you in making this a Great Church to help spread God’s love, work and to serve him for our fellow people. I would like to hear from you, please let me know, my e-mail is [email protected], my cell phone is 804-490-3900 or contact Pastor Beth. You may also leave me a message at the church office at 804-530-1391. I will get back to you on this. Remember "Uncle Sam".
