Bergame de Arriba

Bergame de Arriba is a parish belonging to the Cangas del Narcea’s town hall, situated ten kilometres from

Cangas del Narcea. You can access the village from the AS-15 at a village called La Regla de Perandones, where

we are going to divert from the district’s road AS-29 direction to San Antolín de Ibias. Then we turn to a local

road to arrive to Bergame de Arriba. The parish of Bergame de Arriba includes the following villages: Bergame

de Arriba, Bergame de Abajo, El Cadaleito, Tremao del Coto, Villar de Bergame and Casa “El Ferreiro”

Bergame de Arriba is a typical mountain village, situated at about six hundred metres of altitude. There are thirteen houses, two in ruins and the rest, only five houses, are inhabited. Some houses are occupied on holidays. There are fifteen habitual inhabitants, the majority of whom live from livestock breading. It has a weekly delivery of bread, a monthly delivery of butane and street lighting. In the entrance of the town, on the right hand, the first building that we find is the old school. The school was opened until 1984.

The town is developed along the road, forming a group of houses around it , as we show you, in this aerial photo.

In contrast with this, we show an older photo where you can appreciate the outstanding improvement of the town in approximately twenty-five years:

Separated from the town, next to a centenary tree, we find the church.

In the early Middle Ages, the church belonged to Corias. It was renovated in 1914, when, the vault was replaced. It has three altarpieces, attributed to Coria’s workshop. It keeps several medieval pictures: San Juan and La Dolorosa that form part gothic scene and San Sebastián and San Martín , of a gothic tradition. A magnificent statue of the Crucified, attributed to Antonio Borja. Stands our in San Martín de Bergame’s parish, we celebrate, our Señora del Rosario’s festival on 4th of October.
