HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED
I did my research and nobody died in the process of building The
Ben Franklin bridge .
HOW LONG IT TOOK TO
BUILD IT
The Ben Franklin bridge was finished in 1926. It took four years to
build the Ben Franklin bridge , they started in 1922 jan.6 and finished
july 1st 1926.
HOW MUCH DID IT COST
The cost to build the Ben Franklin bridge not including the
improvements $37,103,765.42.
THE MOTIVATION
In planning Philadelphia, William Penn was motivated in part by
the London fire of 1666, where the intensity of development
contributed to the severity of the conflagration.
STRUCTURAL ISSUES
At the Philadelphia end of the bridge, pedestrians and bicyclists can
walk up gradually sloping ramps. The New Jersey side, though, is tougher:
The south walkway ends in a steep staircase of 39 steps, and the north
walkway has a narrow 42-inch-wide "cattle chute" leading to stairs.
Without a ramp, the bridge walkways remain inaccessible to the
handicapped.
BRIEF HISTORY
First official name name: Delaware River Bridge. Officially became
the Ben Franklin Bridge at its dedication in 1956.
Bridge was opened to traffic at midnight on July 1, 1926. President
Calvin Coolidge officially dedicated the bridge on July 5, 1926.
For three years it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It
was beaten by 100 feet when the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit
opened in 1929.
OTHER INTERESTING
FACTS
One of the most amazing facts about the Ben Franklin Bridge is
that when the bridge opened, there were no posted speed limits.
Drivers were expected to just use their common sense.
