Fun in FebruaryI hope everyone made it
through January without gettingtoo cold or catching a cold! Thetemperature was up and down allmonth. It was a crazy weathermonth for sure.
Since it is a leap year, I thoughtI would share a few facts aboutFebruary.
According to AmericanGreetings, some would say yourbirth flower is the iris, whichrepresents faith, hope, andwisdom. Others say it’s the violet, which represents faithfulness, modesty, and virtue. Which one’syour favorite?
According to tradition, theRoman emperor Augustus tookone day off February and added itto August, the month namedafter him.
There are a few dozen nationalmonthly observances duringFebruary, including Black HistoryMonth, Bird Feeding Month,Embroidery Month, GrapefruitMonth, Haiku Writing Month, and Umbrella Month. There arejust as many national weekly
observances during February,including Friendship Week (week1), Flirting Week (week 2),Secondhand Wardrobe Week(week 3), and Pancake Week(week 4).
A person born on February 29during a leap year (which occursonly every four years) is called a“leapling” and will usuallycelebrate their birthday on eitherFebruary 28 or March 1 in allnon-leap years. The odds of beingborn on February 29 are 1 in1,461 (or 0.068%) according tothe Honor Society of Leap YearDay Babies.
If you’re a history buff, youprobably also know that thefollowing four presidents sharedFebruary birthdays: WilliamHenry Harrison, AbrahamLincoln, Ronald Reagan, andGeorge Washington.
I hope that everyone will comeout to celebrate Belmont VillageMemphis’ 16th Anniversary onFebruary 11th. We will have awonderful dinner with greatentertainment from 5-7pm. Youwill not want to miss thiscelebration.

Feeding Our FeatheredFriends
Bird-watching is a fun and easyway for people of all ages toconnect with nature. Attract morebackyard beauties to your homewith these bird-feeding tips:
Bird feeder basics. There aredozens of bird feeder options, butin general, simpler is better.Traditional box-shaped woodenfeeders with a roof are suitable formost birds. Tube feeders made ofplastic or glass are also verypopular and easy to use.
Safe spots. Place feeders about 5feet from the ground and nearshrubs or trees so birds canquickly take cover from predators. To reduce window collisions, make sure the feeder is eithermore than 30 feet away from awindow or closer than 3 feet—infact, many experts say the closer towindows, the better, so you canhappily watch the birds fromindoors.
Delicious dining. Experts say tostick with specific types of food.Black oil sunflower seeds areattractive to most species andprovide lots of energy to hungrybirds. Suet is popular withwoodpeckers and chickadees; trymixing peanut butter with suet orwith dry seed to provideeasy-to-swallow protein. Fruit likeapples, raisins and oranges willattract robins, bluebirds, oriolesand other spring birds.
HypothyroidismHypothyroidism is the most
common thyroid disorder. Ithappens when your thyroid glanddoesn’t produce enough thyroidhormone, which is essentialbecause thyroid hormone helpsregulate important bodyprocesses, such as yourmetabolism. But with low thyroidfunction, these body processesslow down.
The prevalence of thyroiddisorders increases with age andnumerous morphological andphysiological changes of thethyroid gland during the processof aging are well-known. It is to bestressed that the clinical course ofthyroid diseases in the elderlydiffers essentially from thatobserved in younger individuals, because symptoms are moresubtle and are often attributed tonormal aging.
Hypothyroidism symptomsusually develop incredibly slowly;it can take years for them to showup. Also, some symptoms mimicsymptoms of other diseases, suchas fibromyalgia and rheumatoidarthritis.
Key hypothyroidism symptomsinclude constipation, depression, and fatigue. Pale, dry skin;sensitivity to cold; joint pain;elevated cholesterol levels; brittlefingernails and hair; andunexplained weight gain, memoryproblems, and loss of appetite areother common symptoms.

DISCOVERIESA bird that can’t fly?
There have been countlessmovies, cartoons, anddocumentaries about wildlife. InJanuary, we decided to take acloser look at a species that hasgenerated well over $500M grossreceipts in the box offices ofAmerica...penguins.
Penguins are aquatic, flightlessbirds that are highly adapted tolife in the water. Their distincttuxedo-like appearance is calledcounter-shading, a form ofcamouflage that helps keep themsafe in the water. They do havewing-bones, though they areflipper-like and extremely suitedto swimming.
Penguins are found exclusivelyin the southern hemisphere, where they catch their foodunderwater and raise their youngon land. Larger species are foundin colder climates where theirlarge body mass enables them tocope with the conditions, whilesmaller penguins inhabit warmerclimes. The penguin species withthe highest population is theMacaroni penguin with11,654,000 pairs. The species withthe lowest population is theendangered Galapagos penguinwith between 6,000-15,000individuals.
Penguins can spend up to 75%of their lives in the water. They do
all of their hunting in the water.Their prey can be found within 60feet of the surface, so penguinshave no need to swim in deepwater. They catch prey in theirbeaks and swallow them whole asthey swim. Some species onlyleave the water for molting andbreeding.
The emperor penguin breeds inthe coldest environment of anybird species; air temperatures mayreach -40° (F/C), and wind speedsmay reach 89 miles per hour (144km/hr)!
Penguins are social birds. Manyspecies feed, swim and nest ingroups. During the breedingseason, some species form largegroups, or “rookeries,” thatinclude thousands of penguins. Each penguin has a distinct call, allowing individuals to find theirmate and their chicks even in largegroups.
For their dining pleasure, penguins eat krill, fish and squid. In general, penguins closer to theequator eat more fish andpenguins closer to Antarctica eatmore squid and krill.
The mating seasons varydepending on the species, thoughmost breed during spring andsummer. The incubation periodvaries from 1 month-66 daysdepending on the species. Theking and emperor penguins layone egg. All other species ofpenguin lay two eggs.

Protect YourselfKeeping fit during winter is
just as important as at any othertime of year. If you exerciseoutdoors and your usualworkout time is now plungedinto seasonal darkness, wearreflective clothing to keepyourself visible and safe. If youare outdoors during the day, remember to apply sunscreen toexposed skin. You can getsunburn in the winter, too. Infact, sunlight reflected off snowcan be particularly intense.
