CIRCLE OF FRIENDSSPOTLIGHT
This month in Circle ofFriends we exercised our craftyside as well as our silly side. Weused chocolate and cereal tomake some very convincing“kitty litter.” The best part is thatit was completely edible andmade for a tasty treat. Anotherfun craft we completed weresnowmen made from tubesocks. We filled the socks withsand and tied them off in thecenter to form the body of thesnowman, and then we used feltand other odds and ends todecorate our snowmen. Whilemost of us didn’t want to stayup late enough to see the balldrop, we had a nice New Year’sEve dinner and talked aboutwhat we look forward to in thecoming year. In 2018, we lookforward to more fun with circleof friends
NEIGHBORHOODSPOTLIGHT
We enjoyed wrapping up2017 in the neighborhood lastmonth. Per Christmas tradition
we all opened up our presentsunder the tree to see what Santabrought for us. It turns out wewere all on the “nice” list thisyear! Another highlight of themonth was a visit from Dr.Walker and his dog, Apollo. Weenjoyed loving on Apollo andletting him love on us. He alsoshowed off some tricks heknows in exchange for a treat! With the coming of the NewYear, we look forward to theweather warming up so we canspend more sunny afternoonson the neighborhood patio.

WARNING SIGNS OFMILD COGNITIVEIMPAIRMENT
People with mild cognitiveimpairment are more forgetfulthan normal for their age, butthey don’t experience othercognitive problems associatedwith dementia, such asdisorientation or confusionabout routine activities.
Routine tasks such as payingbills, shopping, and mealpreparation may becomechallenging. People with mildcognitive impairment may takemore time doing these thingsand they may make moremistakes. They are generallyable to live independently butmay be less active socially.
About one in five older adultshas some type of mild cognitiveimpairment. Men were morelikely to suffer than women, although women may simplyexperience dementia at alater age.
The National Institute onAging-Alzheimer’s Associationworkgroup has come up withnew diagnostic guidelines formild cognitive impairment dueto Alzheimer’s disease. Withmild cognitive impairment, people experience gradualcognitive decline due to
Alzheimer’s-related brainchanges.
What to look forA person is thought to suffer
from mild cognitive impairmentif he or she meets the followingcriteria:
A friend, family member, doctor, or the person in questionis concerned about a change inhis or her cognition compared tothe previous level. The person isexperiencing more difficulties inone or more cognitive areassuch as memory, attention, andlanguage than would beexpected for his or her age oreducational background.Difficulty learning and retainingnew information is mostcommon in mild cognitiveimpairment patients whodevelop Alzheimer’s-relateddementia.
The person is having troubleperforming complex tasks suchas paying bills, preparing a meal,or shopping. He or she may takemore time, be less efficient, andmake more mistakes than in thepast. Still, he or she maintainshis or her independence withminimal assistance.
There’s no evidence ofsignificant impairment in socialor occupational functioning. There should be objectiveevidence of progressivecognitive decline over time.Cognitive testing can assess thedegree of impairment.
WAKE UP YOURMETABOLISM
As we age, our muscle massdecreases and our metabolismnaturally slows down. A slowermetabolism means that sheddingthose extra pounds around the waistcan be tough. A few lifestyle changescan help rev up a slow metabolism.Always check with your doctorbefore beginning any diet or fitnessprogram. Here are some tips fromWebMD.com:
Exercise regularly. Strengthtraining, such as lifting lightweights, helps build lean musclemass and will boost metabolicactivity. To burn even more calories, mix in cardiovascular exercise suchas walking or swimming.
Eat. Consuming several smaller, healthy meals a day will keep yourmetabolism active and help you feelfuller longer. Pack your meals withlean proteins and whole-graincarbohydrates. Start each day with anutritious breakfast. Studies indicatethat those who eat breakfastregularly are more successful atkeeping weight off than those whoskip it.
Get your vitamins. Vitamins Band C may boost metabolism.Check with your doctor to makesure any supplements you take arecompatible with prescriptionmedications.
