Al Varon was born in Chicago, he was the middle child. It was written in the stars that Essie was to be his wife. She was also born in Chicago, she was number 10 of 11 children. When Al was 23, he was out of the service, and had been stationed in Germany. He found himself the leader of a group within the Sephardic Jewish League. Essie was 18 and a member. Al was smitten, asked Essie for a date, and took her to a birthday party. However their first date, October 23rd, did not go well. Essie said, “it was an older crowd, they were drinking, smoking and telling naughty jokes.” Al and a friend of his drove Essie home after the party. His friend told him, your date did not have a good time. Al called Essie and told her he wanted to make it up to her and take her out again. Essie declined, saying she had finals, which was a little white lie. Essie’s next move was brilliant. Essie put Al in touch with her sister’s girlfriend Sally who would enjoy a party with a drink, a smoke and naughty joke. Al took Sally out, but wasn’t happy. As Al said, when he met Essie he felt there was an immediate chemistry between them. So Al tried again, Essie tried to decline citing those finals again, but she and Al had a great second date. Now Al wants to propose, so he had Essie try on a cigar band wrapper as a ring. Al said to her, “just for fun, try it on, let’s pretend it is a real ring.” Then he took that wrapper and went to Carson Pirie Scott and bought an engagement ring for $238. One night, after work, he took Essie out and says, “hey, try on the paper ring for fun.” Essie agreed and Al went into the glove compartment and put the real ring on her finger. Essie told me she was surprised, numb and then worried her parents would say she was too young. (Front Cover Story Continued on Page 6) Al & Essie’s wedding photo

Cover Story Continued:Essie went home and woke up

her parents. Her parents loved Aland a year later on October 23rd,1949, they were married.

Years earlier, Al’s parents wentto the wedding of Essie’s oldersister. When Al’s mother camehome, she told him, I found a girlfor you and she meant Essie. Atthe time Al had plenty ofgirlfriends and did not pursue it;but when he met Essie he wassmitten. I asked Essie what drewher to Al? She said she admiredhis caring and compassion forothers. Al admired Essie’s strongvalues regarding family.

They both love to golf andbowl. They both love people;through the South Shore Templethey socialized and took part invariety shows for thecongregation. Al sang and Essiewas the announcer for the show;they rehearsed with the troupe

two to three times a week. They had five daughters Shari,

Rhonda, Susie, Vicki, and Amy.They have 11 grandchildren and3-great grandchildren. Al and hisfather started their own company -Crown Metal. Al and Essietraveled; if it was warm and theywere together, they were happy. But their greatest joy is seeingtheir family grow from this lovestory; which Al’s mother predictedyears ago. Their secret to success?Never go to bed angry. Essie said, kiss and make up, you will behappier in the morning!-Maureen
