Belmont Business Talk2
Welcome to the first edition of the Belmont
Business Talk for 2013. I trust that you
enjoyed a well-earned break over Christmas
and New Year.
In November last year the Belmont
Business Enterprise Centre (BEC) celebrated
its 19th year of presenting the Belmont
Business Awards. This was a fantastic
opportunity for small and growing
enterprises to be recognised for their
achievements. Congratulations to all
of the winners but especially to our
local Belmont business winners.
2013 will see the City of Belmont continue
to prosper and change. The Great
Eastern Highway upgrade is scheduled
for completion by mid-year, bringing
with it improved opportunities for our
local business community.
In this edition of the Business Talk, we
extend invitations to a great selection of
workshops and discussion groups. The
subjects on offer range from a digital
business round table event to a transport
industry showcase and an information
session about flexible density development.
We at the City of Belmont are committed
to consultation and engagement with our
local business community and I strongly
encourage you to participate in one of
these useful and informative events.
We also continue our focus on sustainable
transport within the city. We are once again
proud to support the annual celebration of
cycling with the ‘Cycle Instead Bikeweek’
and in doing so, we will be hosting a ‘Bike
to Work Breakfast’ in March. The Belmont
Bike Plan is now open for comment and
we would welcome your feedback to ensure
that we create a plan that works for you.
I trust that you all have a very happy and
prosperous 2013! I look forward to meeting
and catching up with many of you at the
various business functions that we hold
during the year.

What is Flexible Density and how does it increase the value of land?
Do you know the difference between these two wasps? With the heat of summer now upon us, you may see more wasps around your
premises. Below is some simple information to help you identify between a normal
Paper Wasp and the more concerning European Wasp.
European Wasps are an exotic pest established in the Eastern States but not yet
established here in Western Australia and we want to keep it that way. Many people ask
why European Wasps are pests and why we need to be vigilant in looking out for them.
They are extremely aggressive, sting repeatedly with little or no provocation and
if they do get established, they will seriously impact our outdoor way of life.
European Wasps attack bees and bee hives, robbing the hives of honey and
sometimes completely destroying hives.
Any sightings of black and yellow wasps settling on pet foods, fish or other meat
products should be regarded as particularly suspicious and reported immediately
to the Agricultural Department on 1800 084 881. Alternatively please call the
City’s Health Department on 9477 7222 should you need any further advice.
