Dear School Community, Every day counts school attendance: As we are in the swing of the school year, I would like to highlight the importance of regular attendance at school. The graphic below provides us with a breakdown of our ‘Absence’ results. For the last three years, we have had an average of 16.6 students absent between 20 to 29.5 days of school. Why does 20 days matter? Research shows that 20 or more days absent directly impacts on student learning and their ability to develop friendships and relationships. Our target for 2019 is no more than 14 days per student (on average). We ask families to please reinforce the idea that IT’S NOT OKAY TO BE AWAY! The table below highlights the importance of regular attendance to school. 0-6 days This is within the normal range. The child can take advantage of the teaching and learning opportunities available to them. 7 – 10 days This attendance rate is below average. A child with this attendance rate could miss over one year of schooling between Prep and Year 10. 11- 20 days This is a poor attendance rate. A child with this attendance rate could miss up to two years of schooling between Foundation and Yr 12. If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know or contact Stu or I so we can work together to get your child to school every day. Student Learning Foundation: This term, our Foundation students are engaging in a unit titled, ‘All About Me’. Students will be taking part in lots of activities where they find out information about themselves and their classmates. During the Literacy block, students have been taking part in our phonics program focusing on the sounds letters make. Each day the students learn a new short consonant or vowel sound. They practise writing the lower case letter that makes that sound on mini whiteboards, writing the letters in shaving cream or making things out of play dough that begin with that sound. During Reading, students have been practising pointing under each word as they read it. As the students learn more sounds, they will begin to sound out words and blend the sounds together when reading. Our focus in Numeracy is counting and number sense. Students take part in many hands on learning experiences and develop one to one correspondence. Dear School Community,

Every day counts – school attendance: As we are in the swing of the school year, I would like to

highlight the importance of regular attendance at school. The graphic below provides us with a

breakdown of our ‘Absence’ results. For the last three years, we have had an average of 16.6 students

absent between 20 to 29.5 days of school.

Why does 20 days matter? Research shows that 20 or more days absent directly impacts on student

learning and their ability to develop friendships and relationships.

Our target for 2019 is no more than 14 days per student (on average).

We ask families to please reinforce the idea that IT’S NOT OKAY TO BE AWAY!

The table below highlights the importance of regular attendance to school.

0-6 days This is within the normal range. The child can take advantage

of the teaching and learning opportunities available to them.

7 – 10 days

This attendance rate is below average. A child with this

attendance rate could miss over one year of schooling

between Prep and Year 10.

11- 20 days

This is a poor attendance rate. A child with this attendance rate

could miss up to two years of schooling between Foundation

and Yr 12.

If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know or contact

Stu or I so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

Student Learning – Foundation: This term, our Foundation students are engaging in a unit titled,

‘All About Me’. Students will be taking part in lots of activities where they find out information

about themselves and their classmates. During the Literacy block, students have been taking part in

our phonics program focusing on the sounds letters make. Each day the students learn a new short

consonant or vowel sound. They practise writing the lower case letter that makes that sound on mini

whiteboards, writing the letters in shaving cream or making things out of play dough that begin with

that sound. During Reading, students have been practising pointing under each word as they read it.

As the students learn more sounds, they will begin to sound out words and blend the sounds together

when reading. Our focus in Numeracy is counting and number sense. Students take part in many

hands on learning experiences and develop one to one correspondence.

2 Bellbrae Primary School Student Learning – Indonesian: Selamat Datang di 2019! (Welcome to 2019). It is great to see

our students engaging in Indonesian for a second year. This term, Foundation students are

practising greeting one another in Indonesian and learning to count to 10. Year 1 students are

consolidating their prior knowledge by beginning to explore teen numbers and counting to

20, as well as being able to describe the classroom. In Year 2, students are having a great

time learning about the body, and are creating their own characters to describe in Indonesian.

Year 3 students have been exploring climate in Australia and Indonesia, comparing the

weather of countries that have four seasons versus two. In Year 4, students are learning about

traditional houses in Indonesia. They are reflecting on their assumptions about how

Indonesian people live, and are working towards describing their dream house in Indonesian.

Year 5 students are exploring Indonesian schools, and practising describing the difference

between "this" and "that" making comparisons in Indonesian. Finally, our Year 6s have been

enjoying planning their own "trips" to Indonesia, investigating the culture of Indonesia's

many islands. It is wonderful to see our students passionate about their place as global

citizens.

Professional Learning: Yesterday afternoon our staff engaged in an in depth analysis of

current and possible spelling programs and approaches to further enhance our student’s

outcomes in spelling. This process included examining evidence based methods that will

complement our literacy program. Staff provided feedback and thoughts on each of the

approaches for the Leadership and School Improvement Team to consider and adopt. This

process was a key component of our Annual Implementation Plan. We look forward to

sharing more information in the coming weeks.

Road Safety: To maximise the safety of all students and families, please ensure you utilise

the school crossing to cross School Road. We recently had a ‘close shave’ when a student and

their parent crossed the road without using the crossing.

Relay for Life: A reminder to families that students are invited to wear purple to school on

Friday, 15th March to support cancer research. In return, we ask students donate a gold coin.

3 Bellbrae Primary School Fundraising - Mayfair: As we begin preparing our

major Fundraising event for the year, I would like to

remind families of the importance of supporting our

Mayfair. Information about how families can support

the Mayfair will be available in the coming weeks. Many hands make light work. We look

forward to sharing with our community where funds will be directed from of this year’s

fundraising after we have consulted School Council and Parents and Friends.

Thank you for supporting our school and have a great week.

NEWS FROM THE GARDEN

The feedback from Friday's incursion was extremely positive and it was inspiring to hear

Bellbrae students’ knowledge and commitment to behavioural change. It was wonderful to

witness the joy, engagement and dance moves of students, parents and staff during the

Formidable Vegetable concert.

Thanks to everyone for getting involved and supporting the day. Year 5 and 6 students

planted a massive potato patch, fed our veggie beds with compost, planted hundreds of

broad beans, set up the irrigation, created a plan for reducing waste in the school, learnt

about permaculture and how to use their voice in new and exciting ways

Thanks to those parents who put their hand up to help out in the garden one lunchtime a

week. There are still a few available days so if you're interested please contact the office.

Thanks, hope you all enjoy the summer heat as we head into Autumn.
