Daily Walking Close to Thee… The Scriptures Sunday School class will start up September 13 - back to the beginning. We will be studying Genesis chapters 12-25 – Abram’s transition to Father Abraham. This class uses materials available on line and we will read a chapter per week divided up into 5 daily sets of questions. On Sunday we will discuss what we read and compare our answers. This class is open to anyone who is beyond their high school years. Whether you have never read the bible before or know it front to back, there is a place for you. A sign-up sheet will be posted in Room 215 so we will know how many people to expect.

I personally love rain. Of course, it might not be the case with a major rainstorm that comes along with thunder or high winds-- but other than that, I love rain. I guess I should say, I love rain in Goodrich because of the beautiful scenery of rain falling in a natural environment. A few weeks ago, when our family had first arrived in Goodrich, we went for a drive to explore the community. While we were driving, rains were falling. While watching the raindrops dripping down the window, it appeared as if mini-cars were playfully racing each other. As I was thinking it was funny and pretty, my thoughts turned to the Texas rainstorm last May that caused flooding and took away the life of beloved families and friends. To them, this beautiful raindrop would be like a blood drop. To some people raindrops are a beautiful romantic memory, but to others it’s brokenness and a hurt they’ve experienced. Same raindrop - different views, different perspectives. The bible contains a similar story in Luke 9:45-56. Jesus and the Apostle John have differing perspectives. In Luke 9:49, John is upset and makes a plea to Jesus, "Master,

we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us." John is saying, there are people who are apparently using the name of Jesus and he wants to stop them because they are not followers of Jesus. Jesus does not see it that way. In Luke 9:50, Jesus says don’t stop them, just keep loving them. "Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you." John is said, "That could not be so." Jesus said, "That could be so." You might experience some difficult relationships with your employees or employers, and you may be anxious as to why they say and do certain things. Maybe you are a husband or wife and you've realized that you are experiencing heated arguments lately with your spouse. Maybe you are frustrated because of your relationship with others, maybe you've been hard on your children not being able to understand why they do and say certain things to mom and dad, the list can go on and on. But may I suggest to you this month as you are reading this article

that I pray that the spirit of God will surround you with His grace and mercy to open your heart to the one that is in need of love and compassion. My prayer to you is that you begin to look to the people with the eyes of "that could be so." Say that to your spouse, to your children, to your friends, to our family in GUMC and to the one with which we have a hard time being in relationship. In Christ's Love Your Servant Rev. Won D. Kim

Let’s make a joyful noise together in choir. The Bible tells us to “make a joyful noise to the Lord” (Psalm 100). Be a part of the Songster Choir this year so we can make a joyful noise and praise God together! We rehearse every Wednesday from 6:00 – 6:45 p.m. and our first rehearsal is Wednesday, September 9.

Into the Wild Unknown Matthew 4:18-20 says: As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. In this passage, Jesus calls his first disciples and all he says is “Come,

follow me.” There is a lot happening in this short section, some subtext that we may miss because we are not 1st century Jews. Back in Jesus’ day, all little Jewish boys wanted to be Rabbis; it was the best job one could aspire to. So much so, that all of the Jewish schooling was centered around learning and memorizing the old testament. If you were the best among your peers you would go and find a Rabbi and ask to teach his yoke. A Rabbi’s yoke was his interpretation of the Scriptures, and if he

believed you could do what he did, he would say, “Come, follow me.” If

you weren’t the best of the best he would say, “You obviously love God and love the Scripture, but you should go and learn the family trade.” This is where we find Peter and Andrew, they are working the family trade, they are not the best of the best. They are not following another Rabbi. So Jesus invites them to follow him, to do what he does, to learn his teachings. Jesus is essentially saying, “I believe that you can do what I do, even though you may not be the best of the best.” Jesus with three words invited the disciples into the wild unknown, he does not lay out a plan, outline a budget, or reassure them that it will be worth it. Instead he simply invites them to, “Come follow me.” This is the call for us, for our youth group and our church. Over the next year I hope we follow Jesus into the wild unknown. Youth Group Kick-Off Youth Group will kick off on September 13. We are adding another change to our Sunday Night Youth Group meeting. We are going to reduce our meeting time by a half hour. In the Past we have met from 6:00 - 7:30. THIS YEAR we will meet from 6:00 - 7:00. It will be a packed hour of power!! The Putt-Putt Championship Saturday, September 19 we will be concluding our interrupted Putt-Putt Championship. This summer we were unable to complete the Tournament and determine a winner. As a result we have rescheduled the tournament. Anyone is still welcome to come out, even if you have not participated in the first course. We will be taking the best two out of three golf scores to determine the winner. Members And Friends Share Thanks Dear Church Family, Thank you for all the prayers, cards and healing thoughts during my back surgery. Hopefully, I’m on the road to recovery. Sincerely, Rich Powers Dear Goodrich Church, Thank you so much for letting me go to Judson Collins Summer Camp July 26 through July 31, 2015. It was so much fun and a good experience. I really hope I can go back next year because I would really love to. My favorite things we did were morning and evening worship. That was so much fun and interesting. Also, I learned more about God and met new friends. Once again, thank you. Sincerely, Jariah Womack Bethel UMC Also, a big thank you to Ruth Powers for responding so promptly to our need for new worship bags for the kids, as the ones we had been using disappeared. She has made a dozen more with varied beautiful patterns and designs on them. Thanks for using your God-given talents to help this ministry.
