•  WHAT  IF  MY  CHILD  IS  STRUGGLING  IN  BAND?

-‐  Mrs.  Jewell  is  always  available  for  extra  help!

-‐  Private  Lessons

-‐  An  older  band  student

•  HOW  CAN  I  HELP  MY  CHILD  IF  I  DO  NOT  HAVE  PREVIOUS  EXPERIENCE  ON  AN  INSTRUMENT?

-‐  What  students  need  most  is  encouragement!  J

-‐  There  are  tips  on  the  practice  sheets  for  how  you  can  help  while  they  are  practicing!

•  WHAT  DO  I  TELL  MY  CHILD  WHEN  THEY  GET  FRUSTRATED  AND/OR  WANT  TO  QUIT?

-‐  It  happens!  Make  sure  they  know  it  is  okay  to  struggle!

-‐  Band  is  a  full  year  commitment,  so  they  need  to  stick  it  out  for  the  year.  Sometimes  just  staying  in  band  fixes  the  problem,  because  they  see  that  they  can  overcome  whatever  obstacle  is  frustrating  them!

HOW  CAN  I  HELP?

Page 16: Beginning Band Presentation€¦ · • sarah&odom,sophomoredrummajor • kumaranarivoli,juniordrummajor • tanner&holbrook,&senior&drum&major& storiesfromthebandroom

•  Maintaining  your  instrument  is  extremely  important!

-‐  Instruments  should  be  cleaned  regularly!  A  clean  instrument  is  a  happy  instrument.

-‐  Reeds  should  be  replaced  every  few  weeks.  They  break  easily,  so  students  must  be  careful  with  them!

-‐  Valve  oil  is  a  must  for  brass  players!  Trumpet/baritone  valves  and  trombone  slides  should  be  oiled  regularly.

-‐  Instruments  should  not  be  left  out  when  they  are  not  being  played.

-‐  Nobody  should  touch  the  instrument  except  for  you,  your  child,  and  Mrs.  Jewell.

-‐  If  something  breaks  on  the  instrument,  please  do  not  attempt  to  fix  it  yourself.  Bring  it  to  Mrs.  Jewell  the  next  band  day!

-‐  Sometimes  I  can  fix  them,  and  sometimes  they  need  to  be  sent  in  to  be  professionally  repaired.  I  can  help  you  make  that  judgment!

•  NOT  JUST  FOR  RENTAL  INSTRUMENTS!

-‐  A  representative  (Jan  Edgerton)  comes  to  visit  us  on  a  weekly  basis  and  can  bring  any  supplies  your  child  needs.

-‐  They  can  also  pick  up/drop  off  broken  instruments.  You  do  not  need  to  be  renting  from  Marshall  Music  to  take  advantage  of  this.

-‐  I  trust  them  with  my  own  flute,  so  I  know  they  will  do  a  wonderful  job  on  your  instrument!

-‐  They  send  representatives  to  clinic  our  bands,  judge  our  invitationals,  run  sectionals,  etc.

-‐  THEY  ARE  AWESOME!
