Welcome to our 40th Annual Bull Sale. When I look back, I am totally amazed at the change and dedication it took to get where we are as breed and breeders of Simmental & Angus genetics. I have put together a story of how we got to where we are today, take time to read it, it explains our breeding program, ideas and goals. The cattle business is proving to be a business that has showed great rewards in 2014 & 2015 but by fall, we definitely saw some strong down turn in the markets. I realize that some of us saw quite a discount in our calf check this fall, we are in that group as well. But remember, these are still some of the best prices we have probably ever received. As we all wonder where this is headed, the forecast is still very good for the cattle industry. We have to get through a glut that backlogs our market. As cattle prices slipped with the cheap prices of feed, feeders tried to hold off on marketing their fat cattle. This caused a lot of heavy over fed cattle that have to work their way through the chain. Forecast states that there is still a shortage of cattle and demand should be good to excellent in the future. As I write this, the cattle market has been showing good gains and market demand the past 5 days are displaying optimism and market strength. Now more than ever, it will be important to own top genetics that produce pounds on sale day. The premium for fly weight cattle has softened. Payweight is king, heavier calves at weaning or sale day still puts more money in the bank. We are here to help. Our program puts heavy emphasis on traits that make you, the cow calf man, profitable. We believe your success is our success, so we are focusing on the cow calf mans needs. We would like to believe that all cattle will work for you, but after 40 years in this business, we know better. Top quality cattle are more valuable than an average animal. As in the early years of our program, we are still working hard to make a better product for everyone involved in this industry. We likewise know that there are times when you might experience a problem and when this happens, you can be assured we will address the issue and stand behind your purchase when needed. ULTRASOUNDPlease Note: The spring born bulls will be ultrasounded and data will be available sale day, or as soon as available.

TERMS AND CONDITIONSAs recommended by the American Angus and American Simmental Associations. Cattle will only be released from the sale after they have been settled for. In no instance, will any cattle be allowed to be loaded for shipping without full settlement. EPD’s listed in catalog are new Spring 2015 numbers, please note that EPD’s may change from time sale catalog is printed, until registration papers are transferred.

Feeding arrangements and deliveryFor bulls selling for $2,500 or more, we will offer free keep of your bull until the first of April. At that time we will semen test and give your bulls a breeding exam and deliver them free of charge up to 500 miles. For bulls that sell for less than $2,500 we will feed them and have them semen tested for $150 due on sale day. We will help in delivery arrangements. The bulls will be delivered to your ranch or in some cases when there are multiple owners of cattle on the truck and there is a need to unload and sort cattle, we may ask that you meet us at a central location that is convenient to both parties. For cattle selling over 500 miles away, we may have to hire a trucking firm to help with delivery, if so, we will guarantee delivery cost not to exceed $300 per bull. In most cases, we will deliver them ourselves, but occasionally we will put the bull on a commercial truck that is reputable and conscientious. For purchases of cattle a long distance away, we ask that you be flexible on delivery dates in case we have the opportunity to send your bull your direction earlier than April 1st. When purchasing a bull from Begger’s Diamond V Ranch, we take responsibility in delivering a healthy, breeding bull. We will take responsibility of injury or death loss while the bull is on our ranch. Responsibility of your bull purchase begins when he reaches your ranch or delivery point. We guarantee buyer satisfaction. If you have any problems with your bulls ability to breed and settle cows, let us know so we can make it right. We suggest that you insure your bull against death or injury. We cannot guarantee them against an act of God or sickness that develops while he is in your control. We do guarantee our cattle to be healthy sale day.

HEALTH AND VACCINATIONSThe Bulls were vaccinated at branding with Pyramid 4, with Presponse and Vision 7 with Somnus, and again at weaning, they were poured with Ivermectin on September 3 and again in December. They were tested free of BVD and to be best of our knowledge are free from all genetic defects.

SALE ORDERWe will sell lots 1 through 20, then fall bulls, then go back to lot 21 following catalog order, selling Angus bulls last.

SIGHT UNSEEN PURCHASESWe guarantee all sight unseen purchases. Call ahead and we will go over the bulls and try and match you up with a bull that meets your needs. You can leave a bid with us or any Sales Rep, or by phone, whichever is convenient for you. We know our cattle and strongly recommend that you call and visit with us on all sight unseen purchases. Sight unseen purchase policy does not apply if you are selecting your own bulls without our consultation or the help of our sales reps.

When I was on the ASA Board Jerry Lippsey came to the board with an idea, the first he called the All Purpose Index (API Index). He presented it to us like this; we need to make things simpler there are so many EPD’s that it is confusing. He went on to say; this index is for the man that works in town, runs 20-30 head of cattle and breeds his yearling Angus heifers to the same bull as his mature cows, So extreme calving ease is important. This bull will also need to serve the packing industry well so high carcass traits are a must. Milk numbers need to be good because we want to keep replacements. This will be the Total Package, easy calving, great carcass, and daughters that milk. As a board we all thought, it sounds great and easy to sell. One size fits all. Today after over a decade of use there is some differences of opinion on what is best. What I soon came to realize working with a large cowherd is this; I don’t breed my mature cows to the same type of bull as my Angus heifers. I expect them to produce 85-95lb calves, enabling them to produce more pay weight and more value at sale time. There are breeders out there that make their entire breeding decisions off this index, and claim it is the way to go. I am somewhat concerned; it seems these cattle are more fragile with less ability to produce fleshing ability and pay weight then the cattle that are in the 20-50 percentile range. It is no secret that the higher the API the better the carcass EPD’s are, but I notice that the pay weight and weaning performance will suffer. I have and will continue to use some of the elite API cattle but I likewise will not dwell solely on this index or any single trait EPD at the expense of our cowherds ability to stay easy fleshing, easy keeping, maternal, and wean heavy. There is no right or wrong but we feel that if you desire extreme carcass or calving ease the higher the better. If you desire cattle with more fleshing ability, safe calving ease, with more pay weight, ability to gain weight, and stay in condition then back off this number somewhat and you will like the results better.

The TI index is Terminal IndexThis index was designed for use on mature cows only. It is for the cattleman that sells all of his calves and buys his replacements. This index is not to be used with the API Index or used if you keep replacements. This EPD still puts a lot of emphasis on carcass traits and a little more on payweight. I find this EPD to be of value to a cattleman that retains ownership otherwise it has little value to most cattlemen.

ABout API & TI Indexes

RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST IN BULLSYou will notice that we are selling 3/4 interest and full possession in all bulls in this offering. This means we are retaining a 1/4 revenue sharing semen interest in all the bulls. This semen interest is a royalty interest that entitles Begger’s Diamond V Ranch to 1/4 of the revenues of any semen sold. It means the bull is in your control and possession unless otherwise stated or for a mutually agreed upon handling of the bull for promotional purposes. You get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch retained semen interest remains even if the bull, or any interest in the bull, is sold to a third party. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that Begger’s Diamond V Ranch’s interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform any third party of Begger’s Diamond V Ranch’s interest if the bull is ever sold. Any semen you choose to collect as an ‘insurance policy’ on your bull for your own in herd use, is 100% yours. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch will not be responsible for expenses related to semen collection or promotion of any bull purchased. Unless a mutual agreement is reached for these expenses prior to promotion and semen collection. Cost incurred in collecting semen for Begger’s Diamond V Ranch within herd use will be the responsibility of Begger’s Diamond V Ranch. Any semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the new owner of the possession interest in the bull. If you the buyer decides that you would like to own 100% of the semen rights, simply add 25% of the bulls purchase price to your settlement. This will entitle you to 100% of the bull’s future semen sales. Begger’s Diamond V Ranch will still retain the right to collect 200 units of semen for within herd use at our expense.

As we get into this set of fall born bulls, please note they were born & raised on the range. We left them out all winter. They were fed hay with the cows, they did not receive any creep until late January. They were weaned March 1st. At that time, we put them on a weaning ration until May, at that time they went back to grass and were developed strictly on grass and crystalix tubs. They stayed out until mid-October at that time we brought them in to develop

them for the sale. Note winter raised calves don’t quite have the weaning weight that spring born calves do, as there isn’t any green grass and conditions are tougher. They do quite well in spite of the cold and snow. You can expect these bulls to be not overly conditioned but expressing their genetic potential. They are more mature and are ready for heavy service.

CONNEALY CAPITALIST Capitalist is possibly the Angus bull of choice. He is siring calves that are born light. We have been suing him on virgin heifers for 3 years, fall & spring. He is not a typical heifer bull, his calves grow by weaning time, they are in the heavy group. They are thick, deep and stylish. Disposition is a plus. Although they grow fast and produce pay weight, they mature into moderate easy fleshing cattle that are sensibly sized.

078 WINDY 377JVThis is an Apex Windy 078 son that came out of the Vitt program. This bull does an outstanding job. He sired the top weaning weight bull in both our Angus and Sim-Angus programs. His calves are docile, long made and high performance. We look forward to his daughters as they come into production. No doubt they will be a valuable addition.

BDV TORQUE 912WThis MYTTY In Focus son is doing everything right. He was born & raised right here. We used him 2 years on our replacement heifers both spring and fall. After that, we used him 2 years on mature cows. His calves are absolutely top shelf. They are deep sided, wide based and very well balanced. The acceptability in his sons has been overwhelming. We think he is out producing his sire and believe his is spot on as far as a sire that produces sensibly sized cattle that work for the rancher siring cattle that are easy doing, low maintenance and easy on the eye. This will be the last of his sons to sell as he is deceased.

RB ACTIVE DUTY 010Active Duty has taken the Angus breed by storm. He is siring many sale topping sons that are extremely valuable. They are deep sided, thick made, easy fleshing, and loaded with eye appeal, semen is hard to get, and about out. Active Duty was injured early in life so don’t wait, there will only be a handful of his progeny available in years to come.

APEX IMUS 5103Was the lead off bull in the Apex sale 2 years ago. He definitely sires the right kind. He calves easy and sires calves that excel in fleshing ability and performance. Many of his sons are above average at weaning and are performing very well on test. His daughters look like they will make excellent cows.

TRAX DOCIs a powerful purebred Simmental sire that is proving to be a performance king. He will sire calves that wean heavy. They are deep sided, all black & polled. He sires extra muscle and great disposition. He should sire daughters with perfect udder quality. His calves weigh in the 90’s at birth. A bull to use on mature cows. Bulls like him will sire payweight and maternal excellence. His is a powerful heard sire.

LRS UNLIMITEDA full brother to LRS Turning Point ,was our pick of 5 full brothers. Unlike his embryo brother, he was more moderate sized, deeper bodied bull, siring extremely deep sided, big volume, wide made cattle that wean heavy and have eye appeal. We expect his calves to excel to weaning going on to perform well on feed. He sires cattle that will mature into moderate, easy keeping cattle that won’t get to be over sized at maturity. He has been our go to bull that has seen heavy use in both our purebred and Sim-Angus programs. We will be sending semen to Australia this spring.

TNT TITLISTA full brother to Tanker, he is a cleaner fronted replica of Tanker. As the lead off bull in the TNT sale, he commanded the top price of the purebred bulls in their prestigious sale. Titlist works well in both our purebred and Sim-Angus programs. Titlist calves look good and perform even better. We are excited about his future.

TRAX SOLOThis outcross Simmental sire created quite a bit of excitement in our past sales. He sires length and muscle. He seems to work exceptionally well on Angus cattle. This will be his last set of calves as he is deceased.

GAME PLANThis bull is a performance sire. He sires cattle that are very long with a little larger frame. We really like his Sim-Angus calves. He is an outcross to most Simmental programs.

HOOK YELLOWSTONEHere is a big EPD, high API sire that improves carcass quality. Yellowstone calves are moderate at birth. He is an EPD improver. His sons have topped some popular Simmental sales in the past. Like most high API bulls, he will sire calving ease and produce an excellent EPD profile.

SDS GRADUATEGraduate is a true calving ease specialist. We have used him on our ½ blood virgin heifers. His calves are small at birth and grow about average. He is a high EPD bull that excels in carcass ultrasound. His daughters are moderate sized females that look to be decent calf raisers.

TNT TUITIONThis Sim-Angus bull seems to work well in our program. He sires cattle that are born easily and still have some gas when it comes to weaning and yearling weights. He is probably not a heifer bull but you can use him on about any sized cow, young or old. We enjoy the style and completeness he sires.

LRS FLEXFlex is a big bodied, long made bull that adds performance and style to his calves. He was the Sim-Angus bull of choice in the Lassle sale a few years ago. We use him to sire performance and payweight. We love the body depth and disposition he produces. We lost Flex this past spring, so this will be his last.

HSR IDENTITYHere is a calving ease bull that boasts a great ultrasound scan. Identify certainly sired calves that grow well. Use him on young cows or cows that can use some extra growth. His calves are gentle and long made and are deep sided.

LRS PLATINUMPlatinum is a real thick made Pioneer son. His calves are born light at birth ad grow well. He will sire moderate framed cattle with that easy keeping quality.

GW PREM BEEF 612ZWe acquired this bull out of the Gateway program. He was their second high seller and was a feature in their sale. We have been using him as a heifer bull. Like all high API cattle offering extreme calving ease and carcass quality. His sons are good doing cattle with a little less bone. As we look into the future, we can get mixed signals as to what direction we should direct our breeding programs. In 1974 I was a senior in high school, my brother Bob just attended an AI school and 2 years later I would follow. We were young ambitious and interested in the cattle business. Youth is a wonderful thing, you have the energy and determination to conquer the world. Little did we know what it would take to become successful as a breeder of seedstock cattle.

After attending AI school, we bred some of our commercial cows to Simmental along with Limousine, Gelbvieh, Chianina and Maine Anjou. Right from the start we saw some great advantages in the Simmental breed. These calves had vigor, they had performance and they produced extra pay weight. What we didn’t know was how much maternal power we would receive until that first set of 2 year old heifers weaned their first calves they actually weaned calves as heavy or heavier than our mature cows.

There were some great advantages by using these Simmental cattle and so much good in these cattle. We could improve our pay weight by leaps and bounders. As a whole they were very easy to handle. The maternal power was second to none. They were the continental breed of choice. There were some issues that needed addressed as well. We had to improve. We had to set some goals as calving ease was not the best. The color thing was unpredictable, most were horned, fleshing ability, frame size, fertility and market acceptability all had to be improved.

Early on, we noticed that our black and solid colored Simmental calves were in demand, so we decided we were going to breed polled black, solid patterned Simmental. This was not an easy task in the early years as about all the Simmental cattle out there were colorful and most of the Simmental breeders were dead set against these mongeralized black Simmental. They didn’t appreciate these cattle, they would destroy the breed. I was approached by a couple very well established Simmental breeders, they asked me what the hell I was doing? What I was thinking? I was not to be swayed. This is what I told them. We were filling a market need. There were serious cowmen out there that would not use the colored Simmental but they were using the solid colored ones and were paying a premium for the black ones. I went on to tell them we were going to focus on the black Simmental. We would leave the multicolored cattle breeding up to them. I also stated this was no fad, the future of our breed would revolve around solid colored more acceptable, predictable cattle. I went on to predict that in order for this breed to survive and become the continental breed of choice, we would have to refine these cattle, make them compatible to use on British bred cattle. When this would happen, the Simmental breed would thrive.

I remember their answer, one said “I’ll go to my death bed before I change” and he did. The other followed the lead about 5 or 6 years later and they run a very successful breeding program today.

Our focus and goals have not wavered. Our main focus is you, the commercial cattle producer. Before any other part of the industry is considered, these cattle must work for you. They have to calve easy, they have got to be vigorous at birth and they have to produce a bonus of weaning weight and value on sale day. These cattle have to be efficient feed converters that do it in any environment. We want them to be able to convert grass to payweight on just grass and mother’s milk. The replacement females likewise need to be quiet mannered, moderate sized, deep bodied cattle that are easy fleshing and fertile. We expect them to calve easy, raise a useful calf that has eye appeal, is uniform with his herd mates and has the genetic value to be in demand by the feeder, packer and the consumer.

There is a lot of emphasis put on the industry right now by breed associations, AI companies and packers to put extreme emphasis on carcass traits, all thought I agree, we need to provide a quality eating experience. It is also known that extreme carcass emphasis also comes at a cost to the cow calf man. We have noticed that the extreme carcass cattle also are a little harder keeping, have less feed efficiency and may lack weaning performance and fertility. All this plays on the cow calf mans bottom line. Our idea is, proceed forward but not go overboard. It seems to me that extremes and single trait selection can be costly. We believe balance is the key when breeding cattle that are profitable in the industry.

Our motto is “the cow calf man comes first.” After all, he owns the cattle the longest. Another trait that we put a lot of value in is homo black & polled cattle that are solid colored, even in the underline. We feel that by keeping the underside solid colored, you will experience less teat and udder problems. It seems in a snow storm or when the wind blows, a cow with a white teat will be the cow that gets sore titted and will kick her calf off. Udder quality is a must, we just don’t have time to get calves started, we expect every calf and every cow to nurse without help, if we have to assist them they won’t be back next year.

With all of this being said, you can expect only top genetics that will produce cattle that excel in efficiency, calving ease, performance traits and maternal value. They won’t lack feed lot performance or packer acceptance either. They will provide a great eating experience for the consumer. Most importantly, they will work for the cow calf man and improve your bottom line.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to+10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight thanB. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on matureAngus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
