Principal & Vice Principal’s Message

The first month of school has come and gone! Beatty-Fleming has been a hub of activity with a number of big events already taking place. The Terry Fox Walk through the community, We Day, our first Spirit Day, Open House, numerous club and team try-outs, 90 plus students getting ready to audition for the Beauty and the Beast Production, student leaders being trained in a Red Cross Bullying prevention program called Beyond the Hurt, and our boy’s soccer team brought back a gold medal from their tournament, and the girl’s brought back a silver; and both teams demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship on the field and were exemplary off of the field. And September means back to school routines – learning in the class room, tutorials at lunch and/or after school, and homework at home. I am also very pleased to share with you that there were no major changes during re-organization in terms of adding and/or taking away classes and/or teachers. It’s been a fabulous start up at Beatty-Fleming! Mrs. Bharath and I value collaboration and input from all stakeholders in our community. Our school council is coming together very well for the 2014—2015 school year, and our first meeting was reasonably well attended. We have filled some key roles, and are still looking for more members. Even if you are not on the council executive or a voting member you are always most welcome to attend. The next meeting date is November 5th at 6:30pm. Mrs. Bharath and I continue to receive positive start up messages from the students, staff, and parents at Beatty-Fleming. It was wonderful to see and meet many of you at our Open House and/or School Council meeting and we look forward to seeing you throughout the year.

complete a series of assessments

known as EQAO (Education Quality

Accountability Office) tests. The

assessments are evaluated during the

summer months and the results are

made public in September.

Celebrate World Teacher Appreciation

Day—Sunday, October 5, 2014 Since 1994, parents and students from around the world have celebrated World Teacher Appreciation Day to commemorate the work of teachers and their contributions to society. During the week of October 5, take the time to let your child's teacher know he or she is truly appreciated. Thank your child's teacher and let them know they are making a difference.

Lunchtime Expectations:

Students are not permitted to leave school property

during lunch recess

When a student has written permission from the

parent to go home for lunch, he / she may do so, but

is not permitted to go to the stores in the

neighbourhood.

Students are expected to stay in their own classrooms during lunchtime;

they are not permitted to visit their friends in other classes

Students are not permitted to wander the hallways; they may go to the

washroom with permission from a Supervisor; students then sign

themselves out and take a Hall Pass with them

No backpacks / string bags are allowed on the yard or in the hallways

Pizza / Subway Sales have begun !!

Our pizza and Subway sales started the week of Sept. 29, 2014.

Pizza will be sold during the lunch hour on Tuesdays and

Thursdays. Each slice will be sold for $2. Students are required

to line up outside the stage and pay as they buy their slice. There

will be a limit of 3 slices per student. Subs will be sold on

Wednesdays. Students will need to pre-order their subs by paying

first thing in the morning when they arrive, inside the courtyard

doors. Each (6”) Subway sandwich will cost $4/.

Proceeds from the pizza and sub sales will be used to support the

arts and athletics programs at Beatty-Fleming, and will help

support a school sign.

Tips for being a smart trick-or-treater

Halloween is a fun and exciting time, but safety should be the number one

concern. Here are some safety tips for children:

Wear a properly fitted costume that is bright and non-flammable. Use reflective

tape on your costume so you can be seen in the dark.

Use face makeup or enlarge the eyes on your mask so you can see well. When

wearing a mask, push it up on your head while walking.

Teach children to visit the front door of well lit homes and never go inside.

Help your child plan a route and a time to be home.

Remind children to always walk on the sidewalk, and obey traffic and pedestrian

signals.

Have an adult check treats at home before allowing children to eat them.

Younger children should go trick-or-treating with an adult. Older children are

reminded to trick-or-treat in groups.

Teach children their home phone number and how to call 9-1-1 if they have an

emergency or become lost.

As everyone knows September is return to school time. And what a return it has been in the

Physical Education department. Students began the year with some introductory and co-operative

learning games, students were placed in their house teams and will represent their house squad

colours for the year. Each student has the chance to earn points everyday in a multitude of ways.

link can also be found on “Mr. Smith’s Blog”. Each year the students at Beatty-Fleming have the

opportunity to show school spirit, and represent the House Teams on the annual Spirit Day.

Students participated in a number of games and competitions of Friday September 26. The day

was a huge success and the students had an outstanding afternoon. Following the day, the Blue

team jumped into an early lead, followed closely by Yellow, Green and Red. However, the race is

still close and there’s plenty of time and opportunity left to earn the yearly championship.

Students should listen for upcoming reward and prize days for leading squads.

Intramurals

Intramurals started in September, with our first sport of indoor soccer, students have the

opportunity to compete for their houses, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout

the year. In addition to the gymnasium sports, the STORM Team (Student Team Of

Recreational Managers) will assist in running outdoor intramurals such as Flag Football, Bean

Bag Toss, Basketball and More.

Interschool Sports

School teams have also already begun, with soccer being the divisions first tournament. Both

the Boys and Girls soccer teams represented Beatty-Fleming and demonstrated once again our

Panthers will be teams to be reckoned with. Mr. Hunter and Mr. Zepotoczny led the boys to an

undefeated tournament. Thanks to D’Andre Brooks’ “Golden Goal” set up by Nick Trahan the

boys brought home gold medals and the championship banner. Miss Pierro and Miss Jolivet also

led the girls to an outstanding tournament; although they did not win the gold, they did take the

girls to the finals and winning the silver medal was no small feat! Congratulations to both the

boys’ and girls’ Panther soccer teams.

Cross-Country has also already begun, and Mrs. Routhier is busy at work again getting her

Panthers ready for yet another cross country meet. This year’s meet will take place October 21st

at the Heart Lake Conservation Area.

And then there’s football! Mr. Bhadra and Mr. Crabbe are each busy getting the Girls and

Boys Flag Football teams ready for the annual Flag Football Season, which will be beginning

early October. Every year the Panthers are a top ranked team and this year’s squad looks to have

the potential to bring home yet another banner. Good luck to all the Panthers players!

Time for school - A parent’s guide to regular school attendance

Elementary school is a wonderful time in the life of a child, a time of great strides in

learning and in social and emotional development. Many things affect your child’s success,

from the quality of his or her teachers, to the makeup of the class. One of the most

important factors is your child’s regular and timely attendance.

Getting to class on time, and avoiding absences, are critical if your child is to get the most

out of school. It seems obvious. But the fact is that elementary students tend to miss and

average of eight or more school days during the year. What can you as a parent do to help

ensure your child’s proper attendance?

Is your child missing more? Why does attendance matter?

First, understand that getting to school–every day and on time–matters at every level,

perhaps even more so in elementary school. That’s because important learning occurs

daily, right from the start of class. And because you establish patterns early on. By being

punctual and responsible, children are acquiring positive habits about school attendance.

Some other things to consider:

1. By being late, children miss important social time with their peers before school

begins.

2. Students who are late often feel embarrassed or self-conscious.

3. Late arrivals can disrupt the routine of the classroom.

4. A last-minute rush can be stressful for the child, and get her to school in the wrong

frame of mind.

5. Missing even five or 10 minutes of the day can make it harder for the student to

understand the material being taught.

6. Frequent absenteeism leads to gaps in a child’s skills and knowledge base, cause the

child to fall behind his peers and hurt his self-esteem.

7. Too many missed school days can increase isolation, as the child stands out from

her classmates and misses opportunities to develop socially.

8. Absenteeism makes it tougher for the child to develop a good rapport with the

teachers.

When Time is Ticking

Few homes run like clockwork. The morning routine, especially, can be a mad scramble.

But there are effective strategies for getting your little one up and out the door on time.

1. Get your child to bed at a reasonable hour.

2. Set realistic and consistent schedules and rules at home. Getting ready for school

should be part of the child’s overall routine, something that’s expected of him every

day.

3. The night before school, do whatever is necessary to shave time in the morning,

such as setting out clothes, packing lunch, and setting schoolbags at the door.

4. Have a set morning routine that the child can easily follow,

i.e washing hands and face, going to the bathroom,

dressing, making the bed, brushing teeth, and eating a

healthy breakfast.

5. Avoid any distractions that can slow the child down, like TV

or games.

6. If you’re running late regularly, set your alarm to get up

earlier.
