Principal & Vice Principal’s Message

It is hard to believe that we are beginning the last month of the

2018-2019 school year! This school year has gone by very

quickly, and the last few weeks will be filled with learning, fun

and excitement! It has been nothing short of joyful for Mr. Elias

and myself to have watched and been a part of the academic,

social, physical and emotional growth that your child has

experienced over the school year. Your support and assistance in

your son/daughter’s education is greatly appreciated by us and all

of the staff at Beatty-Fleming Sr. P.S.

On behalf of all Beatty Fleming staff, we would like to thank:

the parents who have represented all the parents of the

school community by serving on the School Council

the volunteers who contribute their time to support our

lunch program, breakfast program and other endeavours

the students of Beatty-Fleming for working to the best of

their ability throughout the school year; we are confident

that they will continue to build upon the knowledge and

skills they have acquired this year

We would also like to thank all of the staff who have worked

tirelessly through out the year to meet the needs of the students

entrusted in their care. Their commitment, dedication and

enthusiasm to program for students makes a positive difference

each and every day. Staff efforts to run all of the extracurricular

clubs, sports and activities is greatly appreciated.

Though we are nearing the end of the school year there is still lots

of learning to do, lots of activities, trips, events … and this list

goes on. We will continue to work in partnership with you, and

will provide your son/daughter the best possible education up to,

and including, June 27th, the last day of school for 2018-19.

Summer activities that boost learning Grades 5 to 8

Follow the news – As a family, choose an important news event to follow

for a day or two. Ask each person to find as much information on the

topic as possible – read newspapers, look at online news webpages, listen

to the radio and watch TV news. Then talk about what everyone learned.

Pro and con: what do you think? – Make a family game of discussing a

special issue. For example, "Teenagers should be allowed to vote," or

"There should never be any homework." Ask your children to think of all

the reasons they can to support their views. Then ask them to think of

reasons opposing their views. Which views are most convincing? For

variety, assign family members to teams and have them prepare their

arguments pro and con.

Stretch, run, walk – Ask your child to do at least one kind of exercise

every day. For example, run or walk briskly for 10 minutes. Walk, when

possible, instead of driving, for any distance less than a mile. Have your

child make a week-long exercise plan. Try to think of a modest reward

for sticking to the plan and exercise with your child.

Let your voice be heard – Promote good citizenship. Help your child write

a letter to the editor of the local newspaper about an issue affecting

children – for example, suggest that a bike path be built near the school

or that a city event be planned for youngsters. Children are citizens, and

their ideas are worth hearing.

PHYS. ED. NEWS AND THEN THERE WAS ONE ……. month that is! Beatty-Fleming and its Pride of Panthers are in to the home stretch, some preparing for summer, while others are preparing for High School. But before they are done, one last tournament and a couple final trips. The Panthers had an outstanding month of May, beginning with the Panthers wrestling tournament. Mr. Crabbe worked with 40+ students, expanding on their wrestling knowledge gained in gym class, to host a highly successful and entertaining wrestling meet. Students competed in their grade level, against opponents within weight classes. Congratulations to all championship winners, and tournament standouts Jayden Scott, Abigail Bissoon. And then... the annual Ball Hockey tournaments, where Beatty-Fleming has a dominant history, with over 10 championships between the boys and girls, in the past 8 years. Once again, thanks to the leadership and coaching of Mr. Hunter and Mr. Tessier, the boys returned victorious with gold medals and another championship banner. Lead by tournament standout and gold medal, shoot out game winning goal scorer, grade 6 Cameron Caines, the future looks just as bright as the past. On the girls side, thanks to Mr. Lucko and Miss Mermigas, the girls took a developmental year, with a few returning players. The girls impressed, worked hard and had a great showing at the tournament. And again, with another grade 6 future star, Elle Giles leading the way, next year looks to be a great one. And with June, as always, come hopes of yet 2 more perennial championships, 3 pitch softball. The boys will play June 6, at Fred Kline park. The Panthers, have a rich history on the diamonds, as both the boys and girls squads have unbelievably won even more championships than ball hockey. The boys who have won 5 of the last 7 championships, look to rebound from losing in the Championship final last year, in the 3rd extra inning. The boys will be lead by returning players Zach Schneider, and ¾ of the Seth Quadruplets. Good luck boys! The Girls, who have been equally as successful, with multiple championships and finalist appearances, look to defend their crown. The girls tournament will be June 7, again at Fred Kline Park. With Mr. Tessier, and returning star Kieara Degroot and Tearra Fullerton, the girls expect nothing less than another championship. Good luck girls! And for the last time this year...remember...”PAIN is temporary...our PRIDE is forever!” Mr. Smith, Phys. Ed. Teacher

Beatty Fleming celebrates

National Indigenous History Month

In 2009, the House of Commons officially recognized June as National Indigenous

History Month following a unanimous motion.

The flag of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation will be raised at all Peel schools

throughout June to demonstrate that Peel schools are safe, inclusive and welcoming

environments where students, staff and families who identify as Indigenous are

accepted and supported.

Staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities in June

to recognize and celebrate the many contributions of First Nation, Inuit and Métis

communities across Canada.

Peel board recognizes Crossing Guard

Appreciation Day on June 11th

The Peel board will recognize the contribution of school crossing guards on

Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, June 11th. The board encourages students,

parents and staff to take a moment to thank the neighbourhood crossing

guards who help to ensure a safe journey to and from school for thousands of

students every day.

40 hours to graduate – Start this summer

Since 1999, all students in Ontario secondary schools are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement in order to receive a diploma. The purpose of this requirement is to encourage students to develop an understanding of the various roles they can play in their community. Students are encouraged to start accumulating community involvement hours in the summer before they enter grade 9. Research shows that early involvement in community service helps students build a spirit of civic responsibility which can be expanded as they move through secondary school. The aim of the 40-hour requirement is to encourage students to become actively involved in making positive contributions to their community. The community involvement component is an opportunity for students and parents to work together, independent of the school. With parent support, your teen is responsible for finding and completing 40 hours of community service. Parents should provide assistance to their teen in the selection of community involvement activities. Here’s how to get started: Spend some time with your teen going through the list of eligible and ineligible activities in the Peel District School Board’s “40 Hours” brochure. Summer School 2019

Secondary School full credit (new credit or upgrade) and 55-

hour (credit make-up) session classes will be offered at 12 high

schools throughout the Board this summer. Peel eLearning-

Summer classes, two-credit Co-operative Education, ESL and

Summer Study/Travel programs are also available. Students

should register for courses through their Guidance Counsellor

as soon as possible to ensure registration.

Beatty Fleming celebrates Pride Month

Pride Month takes place in June to celebrate and recognize the impact the 2SLGBTQ+ community has had on the world, as well as the struggles it has faced and continues to face. The Pride flag will be raised at all Peel schools throughout June to demonstrate that Peel schools are safe, inclusive and welcoming environments where students, staff and families who identify as 2SLGBTQ+ are accepted and supported. Staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities in June to recognize and celebrate the many contribu-tions of 2SLGBTQ+ Canadians.
