• Skeletal system is still growing

• Cardiovascular system is less efficient than an adults; heart rate peaks sooner and takes longer to recover

• Temperature regulation system is less efficient than adults

Pyscho-motor characteristics

• The average for the beginning of pubescence in girls is 10 years with a range from 7-14; for boys is age 12 with a range from 9-16

• Increases in the amount of exercise and intensity does not necessarily increase aerobic fitness levels in children

• Strength building exercises can be introduced

• Flexibility training is key to injury prevention

• Overuse injuries, burn out and high attrition rates are associated with this age group

• Beginning to develop abilities to sustain complex coordinated skill sequences

Cognitive Characteristics

• Beginning to think in abstract terms

• Can start to think big picture and game tactics

It features interviews with leading experts, dynamic graphics and interactive exercises, and compelling storytelling to help you recognize a concussion and know how to respond if you think that your athlete might have a concussion.

The focus of this grassroots course is to share U.S. Soccer’s best practices in creating a fun, activity-centered and age-appropriate environment for 5-8 year old players.

1. USSF “E” License- The National "E" license is an 18-hour course, which covers the elementary principles of coaching and prepares interested coaches for the "D" license course. The National “E” course is administered and instructed by State Soccer Associations.
