you can be a part of live community theatreFew things compare to the thrill of live theatre. Keeping a theatre running takes a community of support—from volunteers and local dedicated talent to supportive local businesses and kind donors. Most importantly, it takes a strong member base of enthusiastic theatre-goers who appreciate quality performances. The Delray Beach Playhouse offers several levels of memberships for its Main Stage Plays – Play Members receive a $50 savings over individual ticket prices and Musical Memory Members receive a $25 savings over individual ticket prices.Snowbirds, see Page 13.

introduced a bright new talent to the world named Liza Minnelli (a lady who continued to inspire and champion their work for the rest of her career)! Their first great success was Cabaret! From then on, Kander and Ebb produced one ground-breaking show after another: Chicago, Zorba, 70 Girls 70, Woman Of The Year and Kiss Of The Spider Woman. And The World Goes ‘Round celebrates 50 years of great Kander and Ebb standards, songs like “All That Jazz,” “Cabaret,” “Ring Them Bells,” “Maybe This Time,” “My Coloring Book,” Sometimes a Day Goes By,” “The Grass is Always Greener,” “How Lucky Can You Get?” and the anthem they wrote in tribute to The Big Apple, “New York, New York!”

main stage plays THE AMOROUS AMBASSADORAn American Farce by Michael ParkerOctober 6 – 22, 2017 | Show 1

If you enjoyed last season’s popular hit The Sensuous Senator, then rejoice, because “Hormone Harry” Douglas is back! However, he is no longer a Senator! He’s now the US Ambassador to Great Britain! Along with his new responsibilities comes an even more urgent need for romantic dalliances. He tells his wife (Lois) that he’s arranged a golfing weekend, whereupon Lois announces that she’s going to a spa and that their daughter Debbie will be visiting a girlfriend. So Harry arranges a stay-at-home tryst with a sexy neighbor named Marianne. Meanwhile, Debbie secretly arranges a romantic weekend with her boyfriend and Harry’s secretary Faye decides to use Harry’s “empty house” for an assignation with a young Marine Corps Captain. In the end, Harry’s usually unflappable British butler (Perkins) finds himself at wit’s end trying to keep the house’s burgeoning population of “weekend lovers” from discovering each other’s secrets! Critics have hailed this vintage American farce as “A block-buster hit!” “An evening of madcap merriment from start to finish!”

BLACKOUTA Mystery Thriller by Rick HarloweMarch3 – April 8, 2018 | Show 4

In this suspenseful mystery play, we learn that (thirteen years ago) a five-year-old boy named David was abducted and brutally murdered in the woods outside of a small town in Massachu-setts. At the time of the murder, it was assumed that the killer had to be a vagrant, since everyone in this small community knew each other so well. When the young victim’s father died, the child’s mother (Martha) took her surviving daughter to live with her own mother, the town’s wealthiest and most influential citizen. Thirteen years later, Martha receives a mysterious letter threatening the life of her now 15-year-old daughter, Rosemary. Suddenly, the community realizes with horror that the unidentified murderer they had assumed to be a passing stranger was in fact one of their own neighbors. In a frenzied effort to prevent a second murder, they begin an investigation to discover the identity of the killer before he can strike again. A powerful drama that is also a classic murder mystery, Blackout is a play you will not soon forget.

WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?A Classic Drama by Edward AlbeeMay 18 – June 3, 2018 | Show 5

When Edward Albee died in 2016, he was the last representa-tive of an American playwriting tradition that had begun with Eugene O’Neill and included such giants as Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams, all playwrights who wrote about the Ameri-can family as if it were the center of their artistic universe. Albee made his explosive debut in 1962 when Virginia Woolf became the most talked about and controversial play on Broadway. Damned by some for its explicit use of language and sexual themes, it was hailed by others as the most brilliantly written examination of a marriage in the modern theatre. The play takes place one night after a faculty meeting in a small college when George and Martha (a middle-aged professor and his wife) invite Nick and Honey (a new member of the faculty and his wife) over for drinks and (what the older couple calls) “Fun and Games.” People who only remember the humor-less film version of the play sometimes forget that Edward Albee’s masterpiece is also intensely witty, consistently entertaining and completely absorbing.

ANNIE GET YOUR GUNA Musical by Dorothy Fields & Herbert FieldsMusic and Lyrics by Irving Berlin December 1 – 17, 2017 | Show 2

Irving Berlin’s classic musical about Annie Oakley (the world’s foremost female sharp-shooter) and Frank Butler (the star of Buf-falo Bill Cody’s famous travelling Wild West Show) remains one of the best-loved musicals in the history of the American Musical Theatre. Annie Get Your Gun was the first show that America’s greatest living songwriter wrote for Ethel Merman (The First Lady of the Broadway Musical Stage) and the result was a musical mas-terpiece! The story of the unlikely romance between an illiterate backwoods hillbilly and a chauvinistic “swollen-headed stiff” who gradually fall in love as they work together in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show was transformed into pure gold in Irving Berlin’s greatest score, a score that includes such Broadway standards as “You Can’t Get a Man With a Gun,” Doing What Comes Naturally,” “I Got Lost in his Arms,” “They Say it’s Wonderful” and the show-stopping duet, “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better).” The score also includes Irving Berlin’s great Broadway anthem, “There’s No Business Like Show Business!”

AND THE WORLD GOES ROUND: THE MUSIC OF KANDER & EBBA Musical by David Thompson, Scott Ellis and Susan StromenFebruary 2 – 18, 2018 | Show 3

When John Kander and Fred Ebb met in 1962, it was the be-ginning of one of the most successful pairings of two musical theatre talents since Richard Rodgers met Oscar Hammerstein. Their first show together was Flora The Red Menace. It wasn’t a big hit, but it was a great learning experience and it also

Show 3 | DEFYING GRAVITY!The Songs of Stephen SchwartzFeb. 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21 and 22, 2018 In a career that now spans over four decades, Stephen Schwartz has created some of the most popular musicals in the history of the American Theatre, from the innovative Godspell to the high-flying Broadway spectacular, Wick-ed. After writing a series of highly praised stage

Show 5 | OPENING NEW WINDOWS!Angela Lansbury on BroadwayMay 28, 29, 30, June 4, 5 and 6, 2018

Angela Lansbury has enjoyed an astonishing career as a performer succeeding triumphantly in every phase of show business. She earned her first Academy Award nomination at the age of 17 in Gaslight. Later she starred in the popular television series, Murder, She Wrote. In 1966, she conquered Broadway with her dazzling perfor-mance as Mame. Later she created the iconic role of “Mrs.Lovett” in Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd. Other musicals include Jerry Herman’s Dear World and Sondheim’s Anyone Can Whistle, along with revivals of Gypsy and A Little Night Music, two generations of children know her best as “Mrs. Potts,” the grandmotherly teacup who sang the title song in Disney’s animated classic, Beauty And The Beast. In a stage career spanning five decades, Angela has introduced over a dozen Broadway standards, including “Bosom Buddies”, “If He Walked into My Life,” “We Need a Little Christmas” and “Not While I’m Around.”

Show 4 | ON THE ROAD TO “HAMILTON!”From Gilbert & Sullivan to RapApril 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12, 2018

The Broadway musical Hamilton has become both a financial and cultural phenomenon. It is the MUST-SEE show on Broadway today and is poised to become the most financially success-ful show of all time. The “revolutionary” aspect of this show about the American Revolution is that the actors playing our Founding Fathers are being played by non-whites and the score is a blend of hip-hop and rap music. At first glance, the score for Hamilton seems like a total departure from classical Broadway music. However, the show’s composer points out that “hip-hop” is simply the latest form of the “patter song” first refined by Gilbert & Sullivan in operettas like HMS Pinafore and The Pirates Of Penzance. This technique of sung-speech later reappeared in shows like The Music Man (“Trouble”) and My Fair Lady (“I’m An Ordinary Man”). Later, Stephen Sondheim “rapped” in Company (“I’m Not Getting Married Today”) and Into The Woods (“Greens, Greens and Nothing But Greens!”).

Show 1 | YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU!The Story of Al Jolson, America’s First Musical “Superstar”October 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25, 2017

Anyone who’s listened to his recordings or seen his films will not be surprised to learn that as a Broadway star, Al Jolson was billed simply as “The World’s Greatest Entertainer!” When he recorded the first song ever heard in a sound film (The Jazz Singer), he had already been a star in Vaudeville and on Broadway for three decades. Before the age of “re-enforced sound,” Jolson was renowned for being able to galvanize audiences in The Winter Garden Theatre without a microphone. His film The Singing Fool was the highest-grossing film of its time! (It’s record was finally broken in 1939 by Gone With The Wind.) And as a singer, he introduced more popular songs than any other singer of his generation, including George Gershwin’s “Swanee,” “April Showers,” “Toot Toot Tootsie,” “California, Here I Come,” “The Anniversary Waltz,” “Rock-a-bye Your Baby (With a Dixie Melody)” and “Waiting for the Robert E. Lee.”

2017 – 2018 seasonmusicals like The Baker’s Wife, Rags and Pippin, he was chosen by the Disney Corporation to create scores for such popular animated (and live-action) films as Pocahontas, The Hunch-back Of Notre Dame and Enchanted (scores that have earned him three Academy Awards). In addition to his work on stage and film, he also wrote lyrics for Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. His songs include “Magic to Do!,” “Day by Day,” “God Bless the Outcasts,” “Corner of the Sky,” “So Close,” “That’s How You Know.” “Colors of the Wind” and “Popular.” Wicked is currently one of the longest-running shows in the history of the American Musical Theatre.

Show 2 | ALL THAT JAZZ!The Musicals of Bob FosseDec. 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20 and 21, 2017

One of the most innovative and brilliant direc-tors and choreographers in the history of the American Musical Theatre, Bob Fosse created a style of dance and a conceptual approach to staging that remain uniquely his own. After making his Broadway debut as a choreographer for The Pajama Game, he went in to create a succession of hit shows including Damn Yankees, Bells Are Ringing, Little Me, How To Succeed In Business, Pippin, Sweet Charity and Chicago. By the end of the 1970’s, he had become such an iconic figure that Hollywood invited him to make an autobiographical film about his own life called All That Jazz. In 1999, Broadway paid him the ultimate tribute by creating a musical revue simply called Fosse featuring recreations of some of his greatest dance numbers, such as “Steam Heat,” “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Hernando’s Hideaway,” “I’ve Got Your Number,” “Razzle Dazzle” and “All I Care About (Is Love).”

Today, when people speak of our "Great American Songbook," they sometimes sug-gest that the songs in that "Songbook" are simply a collection of Top Ten song hits. Not so! The songs at the core of our "Songbook" are the songs that emerged from the period that defined our Greatest Generation, the years in which Americans who had with-stood the challenges of the Depression went on to fight and win World War II. The songs of this period literally bound our nation together, whether they were the Big Band songs introduced by Glenn Miller or the popular songs of longing, separation and hope written by Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael or Frank Loesser. Join us on New Year's Eve as we celebrate a time in our history when all Americans were united in sharing the same dream: to win the War and to bring our boys back home. You'll hear songs made famous by such popular singers as Jo Stafford, Doris Day, Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters, songs like "I'll Walk Alone," "I'll Be Seeing You," "Seems Like Old Times," "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" and "It's Been a Long, Long Time."

Get ready for an entertaining and exciting sixth season of studio theatre!

Our audiences are raving, and saying it’s the best kept secret at the Playhouse! Please join us for three clever matinee performances filled with heart-felt moments, unexpected twists, and lots and lots of laughter! In every show, you’ll see a series of short vignettes. Each sketch poses a different problem or situation for the characters. Some stories may bring a smile and some may bring a tear, but every act is unforgettable, and here’s why: the audience is invited to talk to the characters on stage and help them figure out how to solve their problems! After each act, we’ll bring a microphone into the audience, and ‘talk-show style’, you can choose to make a comment, give an insight, or ask a question. Of course, you can also choose to simply sit back and enjoy the comments of those around you. It’s always fun, it’s always intriguing, it’s often hilarious, and it’s always a great afternoon of entertainment!

MARCHING ON: The U.S. Labor Movement and its SongsWed. Feb. 7, 2018 at 2:00pm In the Fall of 2015, three anniversaries will remind us of the accomplishments of the American labor movement: The 100th anniversary of the execution of organizer and songwriter Joe Hill (Nov. 19); the 85th year since the death of legendary activist “Mother Jones” (Mary Harris, Nov. 30) and the 50th anniversary of Cesar Chavez’s Delano Grape Boycott (Sept. 16). The labor movement used song to press its points and rally its members. Many of those songs, by the likes of Woody Guthrie and the Almanac Singers, Pete Seeger and the Weavers, Phil Ochs, Utah Phillips, Billy Bragg, Anne Feeney and others, tell stories of poor working conditions and union action that propelled this social revolu-tion and its victories. Now the victories are largely taken for granted, e.g. the 8-hour day, workplace safety, pensions, health insurance, and the prohibition of child labor. “REMEMBERING” WOODSTOCK: Songs from a Seminal Event in an Upstate Pasture Wed. March 28, 2018 at 2:00pm When rain washed out the second day of the Miami Pop Festival in May 1968, it would prove good training for pro-moter Michael Lang, who had organized the gathering of 25,000 at Hallandale’s Gulfstream Park. Lang, an NYU dropout who moved to Coconut Grove in 1967 to open a head shop, would relocate to upstate New York the following year. He become the driving force for a three-day music festival in a cow pasture that became a seminal mo-ment for a generation. Woodstock, which expected to attract 50,000 people, drew nearly a half million, clogging traffic throughout the region and shutting down the Newburgh and Harriman exits on New York State Thruway. The festival became a marvel of peaceful coexistence and a symbol of Sixties’ communal values successfully applied. The music, by Crosby, Stills and Nash, Country Joe MacDonald, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, the Who, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Creedence and others, became the soundtrack of a generation. THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND: The Life And Song Of Woody Guthrie Wed. May 23, 2018 at 2:00pm Woody Guthrie, the iconic bard and singer-songwrit-er, created music that is part of the collective mem-ory and shared culture of generations of Americans who grew up in the mid-20th century. The messages of his songs, such as “This Land is Your Land,” “Do Re Mi,” “Pastures of Plenty,” “Hobo’s Lullaby,” “Union Maid,” “This Train,” “Sinking of the Ruben James,” “Deportee,” and others, provide insight into Depression-era America. This was a time when Dust Bowl refugees left their ravaged farms in search of a better life and into Guthrie’s own fascinating connections to both the Communist Party and the Jewish culture.

Nostalgic Concert Series: Feelin’ Groovy These tributes are powerful presentations of commentary, slides and live music by Joan Friedenberg and Bill Bowen who sing profes-sionally as the PinkSlip Duo. While the lyrics are projected on a screen for the audience to sing along, emotionally stirring music and intellectually stimulating narration and pho-tography combine to make for a unique and unforgettable experience.

A TIME FOR PEACE: The Life And Song Of Pete SeegerWed. Oct. 11, 2017 at 2:00pm

Pete Seeger honed his banjo skills while traveling in Appalachia and became the most stalwart of America’s troubadours for social justice, peace and the environment. Together with his wife, Toshi, he founded such icon-ic groups as the Almanac Singers and the Weavers and continued to entertain and rally crowds around their causes after others of his generation had long since faded away. Seeger sang for striking workers and union rallies in his youth, withstood with aplomb the brunt of the McCarthy communist witch hunt, bore with dignity 19 years of blacklisting from TV appearances because of his communist associations and continued performing and singing for causes he believed in right up until his death March 2014 at age 94.

THE BRITISH INVASION: The Music that Took Over our Lives From 1964 to 1967 Wed. Dec. 6, 2017 at 2:00pm When it comes to borders, no walls could ever keep out music. In the early sixties, rock ‘n roll was sharing the charts with the burgeoning folk revival, Motown out of Detroit and surfer music from California when unstoppable Beatlemania swept across the Atlantic, triggering the British Invasion. Begun along the banks of the Mersey River, the new sound percolated in Liverpool clubs as skiffle bands that incorporated elements of Chuck Berry-style rock n’ roll and other influences, such as doo-wop and R&B — essentially, a fusion of American sounds unique to British artists. In 1964, The Beatles led the way for The Dave Clark Five, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Animals, Rolling Stones, Zombies, Herman’s Hermits, Freddie & the Dreamers and a host of others. In May 1965, nine songs on the U.S. Top Ten were British.
