Comenius - Keeping the light on:Sustainable energy for the futureQuestionnaire AGeneral Information

This questionnaire aims at gathering general data to define the students sample group to whom questionnaires have been addressed to examine the results. We have requested : the size of the town of residence, the number of family members, the type and size of house, the type of windows, of heating system, of domestic lighting and of household goods they possessed. The results show that 83% of the students has a family of 4-6 persons81% of students lives in the centre or in the suburbs, while the remaining part lives in the province of Campobasso.Almost 100% of students families use traditional electric lighting , only one student has a solar panel to produce energy. More than 70% uses gas for heating, while the remaining part uses electricity, wood or pellet heaters, fireplaces, other. The most relevant data is that almost 80% of the total sample: lives in the city or in the suburbs, uses gas for heating and the family is made up of 4-6 members. With reference to this sample, we have made a further test (paper test) to give students familiesThey aimed at analysing the effective consumption of electricity and of gas.(While for the remaining part it was difficult to deduce general results.) In some of the towns where students live they are completing the gas distribution network,(which will improve the consumption for heating and for the production of hot water (56%). Besides the type of windows and heating system make us think that is possible to rationalize expenditure and waste of 30%.The use of ecological bulbs (50%) , the habit of turning off the electric households that remain in stand-by may improve the electric current use.

Data about your house

SECOND PART

The results show that 80% corresponds to these characteristics:Sample A:Number of family members: 4-6 people Number of motor vehicles owned: 2-3- House size: detached/semidetached house of 200-300 square metersFlat: 100-200 square meters Other cases were too different therefore they were not taken into consideration. So we considered 80% of the sample and we gave them other questionnaires (paper questionnaires) that required the effective consumption of heating gas, electricity and fuel for motor vehicles during the year 2008.

The house I live in is in the centre in the suburbs far from the inhabited centre

Type of house Detached house Flat

The year in which my house was builtbefore 1960between 1960 and 1990recently built I dont know

My house has wooden window frames anodized aluminium window framesother

My house has a centralized heating plantan independent heating plant

The heating plant

is oil poweredis gas powered is electric poweredis wooden poweredis powered by a fire place is powered by a pellet stove other

In my house there are fewer than three household appliancesbetween three and six household appliancesbetween six and nine household appliances more than nine household appliances

In my house there arenormal electric bulbslow energy use bulbs

The household appliances present in my house are all more than 10 years oldsome are new and others are more than 10 years oldare all new are all efficient of class A and A++ I cant answer

For hot water we use gaselectricitysolar panels a plant that works with the fire placeoil

GENERALLY: I generally turn off the lights when I go out of a roomI always do itI sometimes do itI would like to do it but I cannotI never do it

GENERALLY: I generally leave my mobile phone charger, play-station etc.. plugged into the socket even after removing the equipmentI always do itI sometimes do itI would like to do it but I cannotI never do it

GENERALLY: I leave in stand-by TV, video and othersI always do itI sometimes do itI would like to do it but I cannotI never do it

GENERALLY: I try to reduce electric use by avoiding to light up at the same time stereo, TV, I-pod, computer, and radio I always do itI sometimes do itI would like to do it but I cannotI never do it

Use of household appliance

Saving heating fuel

The Room Temperature is set at no more than 19 degrees:We always do itWe sometimes do it We would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We cover radiators with clothes, underwear or others:We always do itWe sometimes do it We would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

When the heating is on, we close the windows:We always do itWe sometimes do it We would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

If there's a chimney, when it is off the draught shutter is closed:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We use draught-protectors and, when it is possible we let the shutters down, to avoid heat loss:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

When there's no one at home, the heating is turned off:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

Medium obtainable saving: 600mc/year of methane = -300

Saving gas in the kitchen:

Pots and frying pans are put on griddles with the same dimensions of their diameter:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

During the cooking, pots and frying pans are covered with their own lid:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it

We always use the pressure cooker, if it is possible:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We turn the oven and/or the electric griddles off, some minutes before the end of the cooking, to use the remaining heat:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

Medium obtainable saving: 60mc/year of methane = - 30 per year

Saving energy to heat water:

We prefer having a shower rather than a bath, and we don't prolong it in vain:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We don't turn the warm water tap on uselessly:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

Since we have the electric water heater, we turn it on only a few minutes before using the water and we set it at no more than 60 degrees:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

Medium obtainable saving: 50mc/year of methane - 25/year

Reducing the lighting consumption:

We turn the lights off when they aren't needed:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We prefer the natural light for reading:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We use the energy saving bulbs:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

Medium obtainable saving: 150kWh/year - 30 per year

Rational use of the washing machine

We start up the washing machine only if it is full:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We wash at a temperature below 60 degrees:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We clean the filter regularly:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

Medium obtainable saving 120 kWh/year - 24 /year

Rational use of the electric oven

We set the oven at the right temperatureWe always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We use the preheating just when it's necessary and we avoid using the grill function:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We don't often open the oven during the bakingWe always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We turn off the oven just before the baking to exploit the remaining heat:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

Medium obtainable saving 60 kWh/year -12 euro/year

Rational use of the Dishwasher:

We start the dishwasher only when it is full:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We turn the dishwasher off when it starts drying : you only need to open the door:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We use washing cycles at low temperatures:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

We clean the filter regularly:We always do itWe sometimes do itWe would like to do it, but we cantWe never do it.

Medium obtainable saving:120 kWh/year -24 euro/year

Food habits: waste disposal and recycling

We prefer the microwave oven:

We use the microwave oven:YesNo

Microwave ovens consume half of traditional electric ovens; they dont need preheating and they keep the nutritive food properties .
