Hello to all members and Happy New Year. As weenter 2012, we at BAV are looking orward to thecoming months as we provide our membership with newequipment and acility upgrades to stay on the cutting edge o the ever-changing world o media technology.
In the main studio control room we are currentlylooking to upgrade our video production switcher and
production monitors. For the switcher, we are looking or a hybrid SD/HD switcher, allowing us to use ourcurrent cameras until next year when we plan to upgradeto High Denition (HD) cameras. Te entire look o the control room will change but rest assured as we beginto implement these upgrades, classes will be oered to allcurrent studio producers and their crews to amiliarize
them with the new equipment. Tis will be a long andtedious process but one that will enable BAV to oneday broadcast in HD.
In another monumental move, BAV’s studio lighting will get a dramatic makeover. We will be creating a xedfuorescent and LED lighting scheme that will createso, ull lighting without the need or members to climbladders and make adjustments. We’ll also be adding Color Force dynamic background LED lighting. Tisamazing light system enables or dramatic color lighting
backgrounds and the ability to program them to changeon the fy. Basically, i you can think o a color scheme
you’d want your set’s background to be we can makeit happen. Te setup can even be multiple colored oreven Chroma key green. Once again, these lights willbe set and will never need to be physically moved but
only programmed via the lighting board to the desiredcolor(s) and then programmed to change, i needed.Tose curious should have a look at the Color Forcedemo: http://www.chroma-q.com/products/colororce/demo.asp -It truly is amazing.
Tere’s also more un to be had getting out and aboutin the Billerica community as we are adding some neweld production equipment to the BAV reserves.Ikan is a great new company that I personally have beenimpressed with by their orward thinking and budgetminded video production products. Last year we addeda pair o their hotshoe camera monitors and this year
we’ll be adding a ew more o their ne products to ourequipment room shelves. Tese include: camera hotshoeLED kits; portable remote controlled LED lighting kitsand event lighting kits. In addition, we are planning onadding rugged Go Pro HD cameras that members can
take on serious adventures. Check out some o theiramazing demos here: http://gopro.com/
Once we get those on board, I’ll be waiting or theinevitable “Billerica Extreme” show to take fight! Ormaybe someone can just use one to shoot some o themore “spirited” government meetings…
All in all, 2012 looks to be a great year o dynamicchange. With the continued striving by the BAV sta to provide our membership with the best new
equipment and updated acilities we can nd, it’s alsolooking to be a great year to learn something new in2012 too. As always please eel ree to contact me withany questions at [email protected] I hope tosee you soon!

DSLR Filmmaking: Pros and Cons, Part 1Alex Shure, Programming Coordinator
In the wake o rapidly changing technologies and euding companies, the consumer is oen le behind or put betweena rock and a hard place, so to speak. However, sometimes this situation proves advantageous to the consumer/media
producer. DSLR Cameras have gained much popularity over the past couple o years, not only or their ability to createhigh quality still images but or their ability to shoot video as well. First, let me back up… What the heck is a DSLR
Camera anyway?
“Most digital single-lens refex cameras (digital SLR or DSLR) are digital cameras that use a mechanical mirror systemand pentaprism to direct light rom the lens to an optical viewnder on the back o the camera…Te term DSLR generally reers to cameras that resemble 35 mm ormat camera’s, although some medium ormat cameras are technicallyDSLRs.” --Tanks Wikipedia!
Tere are some clear advantages to shooting video on DSLR Cameras. First, and oremost, they have the potential o shooting very high quality video. In act, some would argue that they shoot better video than most camcorders. Telarge image sensor in these cameras is comparable to traditional lm cameras. I’ll stay away rom the technical aspect o this, but suce it to say, size matters; at least in respect to the size o a camera’s image sensor. Te resulting image quality
is impressive to say the least.
Secondly, with DSLRs, you are dealing with a relatively compact sized camera overall. We are talking about cameras thatgenerally weigh 2-5 pounds depending on the lens and accessories. Anyone who has ever held a 10-pound camera orlonger than 10 minutes can really appreciate a less hey setup. I will add, that the cameras are still heavy enough to dodecent handheld shots without the ‘shakycam’ look. I nd that many consumer camcorders are in act, too light, and the
video quality suers or this i you shoot without a tripod.
Next, I present three words: Full Manual Control. You can manually adjust almost every aspect o a DSLR cameraincluding, aperture, ISO (sensitivity to light), shutter speed, etc. It’s all about how much o what light do you expose
your camera to and or how long. Now, I know that plenty o people don’t even remotely want to be concerned with this, as it is the exact opposite o “point and shoot.” Tat being said, I realize this aspect o DSLRs can bedisadvantageous or some. I will also add that higher end camcorders (like the Z5Us at BAV) have manual settings as
well, but my point is, on camcorders, you don’t necessarily need to use these manual settings, but on DSLRs, the cameraisn’t going to do all the thinking or you.
It’s all in the glass: DSLRs biggest selling points are that there is a vast array o swappable lenses available or them. I’vebeen shooting on my Canon DSLR or a while and have three dierent lenses, and as a camera nerd, my mouth watersthinking o all the shooting possibilities when you have multiple lenses to work with. I rounded out my kit with a wide,a telephoto and a macro lens. At a moment’s notice I can shoot something an inch in ront o the lens, 50 yards away, and most things in-between. Tis versatility isn’t necessarily available in camcorders. While most have very well rounded
lenses, many are not interchangeable. Tere are downsides to DSLR lenses though. Many are very expensive, in act, more expensive than the camera body itsel. Also, even well engineered lenses are ragile, sel-contained pieces- on ando o a camera. It can be a hazardous situation (or the lens and camera) swapping lenses in an unstable environment.Dust, dirt, moisture, chemicals, etc. are all enemies to sensitive camera hardware. For this reason, many proessional
photographers will carry multiple cameras so they don’t have to change lenses in the eld.
Seeing as I’m totally out o room, I will continue my article on DSLRs in the next BAV newsletter. I would encourageanyone who wants to learn more, or chat in urther detail about the subject to give me a shout. I personally work withDSLR equipment and have become a an o the technology, while also accepting it’s aults… As always, I ’m happy tochat or answer questions i this is something that you would like to explore or yoursel. See you in the springtime!
