OVERALL STATISTICSDUGOUT CHATTERMOONFRUIT MANIA ... In four of Loras’ last six games, they have hit four home runs or “moonfruits” as they’re attributed by the team. Senior Eric DeSousa has two, while senior Niko Andriotis and junior Danny Fahlgren each have one.

OFFENSIVE OUTPOURING ... In their last six games, the Duhawks have pounded out 64 hits and 56 runs, good for a .328 batting average. Of Loras’ 64 hits, 21 have gone for extra-bases

BACK-TO-BACK SWEEPS? ... On Tuesday, Loras hosts University of Dubuque for the back-end of their four-game series. Last week, Loras took both games by scores of 9-4 and 10-6. If they pull off the sweep, it will tie with the longest winning streak since 2009, when they won eight straight on they way to an Iowa Conference title.

DUHAWKS PICKED FIFTH IN IIAC PRESEASON POLL ... The Iowa Conference released their preseason Coach’s Poll for the 2014 baseball season on Wednesday. The Duhawks received 30 points, including one first place vote, placing them tied for fifth in the standings. After a 19-21 (11-15) record in 2013 in which the Duhawks made the Iowa Conference tournament for the first time in three years, the Duhawks were selected to finish just behind conference foes Buena Vista, Wartburg, Coe, and Simpson.

BENEFIT FROM EXPERIENCE ... Loras returns 19 players from last year’s roster giving them depth and experience at every position. Notable returners for the Duhawks include senior Jeremy Gerardy, junior Will Petrosky and sophomore Patrick Walsh. Gerardy and Petrosky were All-Conference selections, while Gerardy was also named to the All-Region team following last season.

DUHAWKS KICK OFF SEASON OVERSEAS ... In January, Loras traveled to the Dominican Republic for six days. While there, they competed against the local professional teams as well as spent time in the community working with children.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC REFLECTION: ERIC DeSOUSA ... Through our experience we had a great opportunity to develop as a team. The on-field experiences were great and gave us an opportunity to develop as a squad for our upcoming season. It also gave us added practice time heading into a much anticipated year. Off the field is where many of my teammates and I were able to grow and develop as people. We were afforded the liberty of seeing the real Dominican Republic from the eyes of the locals; seeing what it is like to live in such a baseball rich area. From all of this, we saw how much we have in our lives and how lucky we are, for what we have here far exceeds what many of them have.

We take so much for granted here and we need to be more thankful for the opportunity we have to play baseball and get a great education here at Loras. What I thought was incredible was how happy all of the people were; they have so little yet live such a joyous life. I know many would say that they are poor, but only in the sense of money. This appreciation and understanding that we will take with us is where I really thought that myself and my teammates truly developed.
