All-Time vs. Georgia Tech...The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series with the Eagles, 18-12. The series began when Boston College joined the ACC for the 2006 baseball season. Georgia Tech holds a 16-12 ad-vantage in regular season play and has won each of the two ACC tournament contests in 2009 and 2016. BC is 7-9 in the series under ninth-year head coach Mike Gambino and has won five of the last seven match-ups.

Last Time They Met...Following a series win for BC at Georgia Tech to close out the regular season, the two sides met three days later at the ACC Championship on May 24, 2016. The Yellow Jackets won, 6-0, and pulled away with a three-run top of the ninth. English went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run for Georgia Tech. In the regular season series vs. the No. 22 Yellow Jackets, BC bounced back from losing the opener to sweep a Saturday doubleheader and claim the series by scores of 8-3 and 7-6

By the Numbers: The Eagles vs. The Ramblin’ Wreck...Only two players on the current BC roster have played in a game against Georgia Tech. Senior lefty Zach Stromberg pitched one-scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout in the 2016 series opener as a freshman. Senior catcher Gian Martellini made a pinch-hit appearance against the Yellow Jackets in the ACC Championship game.

Against the Ranked...The Eagles are 5-7 against ranked opponents this season having defeated No. 8 Louisville (3/10), No. 20 Clemson (3/24), No. 19 Florida State (3/29, 3/31) and No. 1 NC State (4/7). The win over the Cardinals marked BC’s first win over a ranked team and first over a ranked team on the road since defeat-ing No. 21 Virginia (3/16/18). The series win at FSU marked the first for the Eagles against a ranked opponent at home or on the road since taking two of three at No. 22 Georgia Tech (2016). Boston College picked up two wins vs. ranked teams in each of the last three seasons and went 10-9 vs. the ranked in 2016.

Year-to-Year Comparison...Boston College, which matched its 2018-win total by beating Rhode Island (4/9), is five games improved through 34 games than its 12-22 record to start 2018. The Eagles’ scoring is up 0.8 run per game by comparison from 5.0 to 5.8. Home runs are up from 0.29 (overall in 2018) to 0.59 this season. Jack Cunningham hit his fourth home run of the season vs. Wake Forest (3/15), which was the 14th of the season by BC. The Eagles’ 14th home run of 2018 came in game 41.

Speeding Eagles...The Eagles lead the ACC with 69 stolen bases, which ranks 16th in the country. Sal Frelick is second in the ACC with 15 and Chris Galland ranks fourth with 13. As a team, Boston College swiped 92 bags in 2018. The Eagles ranked second in the ACC behind Louisville and 21st in the nation. BC aver-aged 1.88 per game; good enough for second in the league and 12th in the NCAA. Three Eagles tallied 19 stolen bases or more as Galland led the way with 28. He ranked 20th in the nation and 2nd in the ACC in overall steals and 12th in the country and first in the league with 0.58 per game.

Up Next...The Beanpot concludes Wednesday, April 17 a Fenway Park at 2 p.m. All tickets are $10 and benefit the Pete Frates #3 Fund.

Head Coach Mike Gambino

Mike Gambino, a 1999 Boston College graduate, was named head baseball coach on July 19, 2010. He brought the Eagles to the program’s first NCAA Tour-nament in seven years in 2016.

Last season, Gambino and the Eagles went 17-32. Four players were selected in the MLB Draft and freshman Chris Galland earned All-ACC Third Team.

In 2017, the Eagles returned to the ACC Championship, the first time they went to the conference tournament in back-to-back years since 2009-10. BC won 10 of its last 15 ACC games with sweeps over ND and NC State. Gambino guided the 2016 Eagles to 35 wins, the most since 2005, tying for the second most in program his-tory. They tallied 13 ACC wins and their six ACC series victories set a school record. BC swept the Oxford Regional to advance to the program’s first Super Re-gional. BC earned a national ranking for the first time in school history, ending the season in the top 25. For his efforts, Gambino was named the ABCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year. Gambino saw Justin Dunn garner All-America third-team and Jacob Stevens collect freshman All-America. Stevens picked up NEIBA Freshman of the Year, while Dunn was named to the All-ACC Third Team. In 2016 and 2015, Gambino mentored two first-round draft picks: Dunn, 19th overall by the Mets in 2016, and Chris Shaw, 31st by the Giants. It was the first time in program history the Eagles saw back-to-back first rounders. Overall, 23 players have been drafted in Gambino’s head coaching tenure. Gambino, who was an assistant at BC from 2003-05, came from Virginia Tech where he spent four years as an assistant under former BC coach, Pete Hughes. Pri-or to working in Blacksburg, Gambino spent two years as a regional scout for the Detroit Tigers. Gambino played for BC from 1997-2000. He hit .313 with 22 doubles, eight homers, 87 RBI and 117 runs. The Garrison, N.Y., native was a first-team All-Big East, All-New England and All-Northeast pick. Gambino played two seasons in the Red Sox organization.

Gambino received his bachelor’s degree from the Heights in English and theology. He lives in Needham, Mass., with his wife, Jill, and their children, Sonny and Callahan.

Scoring Streak...BC scored in each of the first six innings against Quinnipiac (4/10) and in seven of eight turns at bat in the 11-5 win. It marked the longest such streak in a single game this season and longest since scoring in each inning between the second and eighth in a 9-5 win at Dartmouth (4/9/13). The Eagles also scored in seven consecutive innings in an 11-3 win over Bry-ant (4/7/10) and six straight innings in a 12-5, seven-inning game vs. Maryland Eastern Shore (5/13/07).

Winning in the ACC...Boston College won its opener and the Sunday rubber-match at No. 19 Florida State for its first ACC series win of the sea-son. The series victory marked the first in conference play for the Eagles since sweeping Notre Dame (2017) and first on the road since taking two of three at Duke (2017). It was also the first series win over a ranked opponent on the road or at home since taking two of three at No. 22 Georgia Tech (2016).

Home Run Hitters...Last season, Boston College hit just 14 home runs in 49 games; averaging 0.29 per game. Through 34 games, the Ea-gles have gone up top 20 times; averaging 0.59 per game. BC hitters combined for four home runs at Bethune-Cookman (2/22-24). It marked the first time that the Eagles homered three games in a row since going deep five games in a row with 11 home runs from March 31 to April 5, 2015.

Freshman Impact...The five BC freshman hitters have combined to hit .302 (114-for-377) with 60 runs scored and 52 driven in. Five freshman pitchers have accounted for 106 (35.8%) of BC’s 296.1 innings pitched. RHP Mason Pelio (4-1, 1.64) tossed seven innings of one-run ball at EKU (3/2) to become the first BC freshman to pitch seven or more and allow one run or less since Jacob Stevens vs. Louisville (4/22/16).

Baseball Beanpot...The 30th annual Baseball Beanpot got underway with a dou-bleheader at the Harrington Athletics Village on April 2. BC lost to UMass, 6-2, in the opener and Harvard defeated North-eastern, 4-3. Boston College will have a re-match with the Huskies in the consolation game at Fenway Park on Wednes-day, April 17 at 2 p.m. The championship game between the Minutemen and Crimson follows shortly after. Net proceeds from ticket sales for the Beanpot championship round at Fen-way will benefit the Pete Frates #3 Fund.

Two Lane Turnpike...Senior Thomas Lane is joined on this team’s roster by young-er brother and freshman Travis Lane. The righties from Georgetown, Mass. played at Phillips Academy. Both were four-year starters and garnered All-Northeast regional hon-ors from Perfect Game. The Lanes are the first pair of broth-ers to play for BC since Dave (‘11) and Jim Laufer (‘12).

Two-Time Captain...Graduate Carmen Giampetruzzi was elected by his team-mates to serve as team captain for the season year in a row. Last season, he also wore the No. 8 jersey and pitched in four games before being shut down for labrum surgery.
