The Volunteers have now won all three of their series in the second half of league play, marking the first time that they have won three consecutive league series since 2005. As a team, the Vols finished the weekend with a team batting average of .391, led by eight hits from junior Josh Liles. Hawn had three longballs in the three games against the Bulldogs, while junior P.J. Polk and Blake Forsythe added two each. In all, Tennessee scored 43 runs, the most it has had in a single series since it scored 47 times in a three-game set against Radford in 2005. It was also perfect on the basepaths, stealing 11 bases in 11 attempts. With both UT and Alabama winning on Sunday, the Big Orange remains in sole possession of the eighth and final spot in the SEC Tournament to be held in Hoover, Ala., May 26-31. SCOUTING MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE Middle Tennessee went 3-0 last week as it swept its weekend series with Southern Illinois. The two schools played five games during the season with the Blue Raiders winning all five. As a team, the Blue Raiders batted .336 with 36 hits, 10 for extra bases, and drove in 26 runs. Junior Bryce Brentz had struggled at the plate the past few weeks since returning from an injury but found his stride against Southern Illinois. The All-American hit two home runs, one of which was good for three runs, as he helped guide the Blue Raider offense to a weekend sweep. The Blue Raider pitching staff performed well on the weekend posting a 3.33 ERA allowing just 14 runs, 10 earned, on 24 hits. The staff struck out 10 batters and allowed just eight extra base hits all of which were doubles. Senior Chad Edwards worked a complete game against the Salukis on Saturday allowing just one run, which was unearned, on seven hits and struck out seven. Junior Eric Gilley also performed well as he allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in seven innings of work on Sunday to help guide the Blue Raiders to the sweep. Middle Tennessee will play its final non-conference games this week beginning with Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn., at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11. Then on Wednesday, May 12 the Blue Raiders will face Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., at 6 p.m. before returning home to face New Orleans. SERIES HISTORY Wednesday’s game will be the 48th all-time encounter between Tennessee and Middle Tennessee State. The Vols hold a 30-17 lead in the all-time series, including an 8-6 triumph in Murfreesboro earlier this year, in which Charley Thurber hit an eighth-inning home run to give UT the come-from-behind win. The Big Orange has dominated the series in recent years, having won 22 of the last 28 contests between the two squads, including three straight and nine of the last 10. Tennessee is 13-9 all-time against the Blue Raiders in Knoxville, but have won nine straight games in its home stadium. In the month of May, UT is 6-2 against MTSU, including an NCAA Tournament victory on May 25, 2001. LAST 10 MEETINGS March 10, 2010 Tennessee 8, MTSU 6 Murfreesboro, Tenn. TODD RALEIGHThird SeasonWestern Carolina, 1991Record at UT: 80-79 (.503)Career Record: 337-288 (.539)

Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is in his second season at Tennessee after guiding his alma mater, Western Carolina, for eight seasons.

While at Tennessee, Raleigh has had seven players drafted, including two in 2008 and five more in 2009, highlighted by first-round pick Kentrail Davis. In 18 seasons as a collegiate coach, Raleigh has now produced a total of 39 MLB draft picks and

56 professional players. That number will undoubtedly continue to grow as 2009 third-round selection Bryan Morgado made the decision to return to Knoxville for a chance to continue to grow under Raleigh’s leadership during his junior campaign.

During his tenure in Cullowhee, Raleigh’s clubs won two regular-season Southern Conference champion-ships, one Southern Conference tournament title, turned in five top-three league finishes and made a pair of NCAA Regional appearances—reaching the Regional final both times.

His 2007 WCU team posted a winning record against teams in the top 35 of the RPI and earned a rare mid-major at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Catamounts were touted by ESPN’s Kyle Peterson as featuring an “SEC-style offense.”

In 18 collegiate seasons, Raleigh has coached 56 players who have gone on to play professional baseball, including 13 players who were drafted in the top-10 rounds and seven who have advanced onto Major League rosters.

In those 18 seasons as a collegiate assistant or head coach, Raleigh’s teams have finished third or better in their respective league 12 times (67 percent).

Raleigh and his wife, Stephanie, have three children: Cal (12), Emma Grace (10) and Carley (3).

Turn up The VOLume “Tennessee has everything. It’s the state

school, the flagship school. We can recruit this state, and there are enough good players in this state to win a national championship. We’ve got to build this program from the inside out, and that’s what we plan on doing.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“When you make a crazy play like that, say when you are younger, you’re like ‘Man, what if there was a TV camera around? That could end up on SportsCenter.’ Luckily they dug through it and found a video, and I was just sitting there on my couch. It was weird seeing me and then LeBron. It was crazy.”

— UT Outfielder Chris Fritts

“I think we’ve done a good job of building a foundation that we need to build, but obvi-ously, with that comes the end product. The end product for us is winning some games, and I think we’re poised to do that. I think what we had to do was go through the right process and we have gone through those proper channels. I feel excited about this season. We’ve got a tremendous team. We’re more athletic, more physical, we’re deeper, we’re better. You com-bine that with the way we ended last year, the momentum we had, I feel like we’re going to have a great year, I really do.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“The renovations that have been made to the stadium are unbelievable. It’s a place we can call home now. Coming to the park every day, I feel really at home and proud to be a part of this team and this university. This is probably the most talented team I’ve been a part of at Tennessee. Our depth is just tremendous and everywhere on the field is a strong point.”

— Junior Catcher Blake Forsythe

“I’ve been a fan my entire life and I will be even when I leave this university. It’s always going to be home to me. No matter if I’m here playing or watching younger guys several years down the road, I will always want to see UT do well and hopefully we can really turn it around and become one of the premier programs in the country, starting this year.”

— Junior First Baseman Cody Hawn

““Bryan Morgado is one of the best pitchers, certainly in our league, but maybe in the coun-try. He’s a kid that’s throwing 90 left-handed, he’s got three pitches -- the matchup for us was a legit (pitcher), one of the best guys in the league.”

A 2005 loss to Clemson which started at home, was halted, and then concluded on a different date on the road is not included in Raleigh’s home-away-neutral record.

u Raleigh led an offensive juggernaut in 2007 that ranked fifth nationally in runs per game (8.4), sixth nationally in home runs per game (1.4), scoring (8.4) and slugging percentage (.517), seventh in doubles per game (2.39) and 11th in batting average (.323).

u Raleigh’s 2008 UT squad hit 67 home runs in just 56 games, the fifth-highest single-season total in program history.

u The Vols improved upon that number in Raleigh’s second season, blasting out 87 home runs in 55 games, good for the second-best single-season total in UT history.

u Despite fielding a lineup that regularly included six or more underclassmen in 2009, UT improved its RPI by 31 positions from the previous season, moving from 89 to 58.

u Under Raleigh’s guidance, first-year Vol Cody Hawn became just the 10th player in UT history to claim the team Triple Crown with a .364 batting average, 22 home runs and 81 RBIs.

NOTEWORTHYTEAM NOTABLESuTennessee is ranked 45th in the most recent

NCAA RPI, which was released on May 11.uThe Vols are tied with Auburn, Florida and

Ole Miss for the best record in the second half of SEC play with a mark of 7-2.uUT is a perfect 5-0 in the month of May

this season with two wins against Kentucky and three versus Georgia.uTennessee is currently averaging 7.92

runs per game (380 in 48 games), good for fifth all-time in school history.uSince starting SEC play with seven straight

losses, UT has won 11 of its last 17 league games, including seven of its last eight to claim three straight series wins. The last time the Vols won three consecutive SEC series came in 2005 against Mississippi State (4/3 DH), Kentucky (4/8-10) and Arkansas (4/15-17)uScoring the initial run of the game has

been a key to victory for Tennessee this sea-son as it is 15-3 when it cracks the scoreboard first. When they allow their opponent to do so, however, the Vols are just 12-18 with four of those wins coming on walk-off hits in the final inning.uTennessee has been extremely patient at

the plate this season, drawing a total of 235 walks so far. That ranks the Vols second in the conference behind only LSU (235).uThe Vols currently rank 13th in the nation

and are tied for second in the SEC with Alabama with a .976 fielding percentage.

INDIVIDUAL NOTABLESuWith 33 career home runs, junior Cody

Hawn needs just five more to tie Todd Helton for the all-time UT lead at 38. He is currently tied with J.P. Arencibia and Jeff Christensen for fifth in school history.uJunior P.J. Polk currently ranks among the

SEC leaders in 11 different offensive categories (batting average-11th, slugging percentage-12th, on-base percentage-10th, runs-9th, hits-8th, home runs-10th, total bases-7th, walks-9th, stolen bases-4th, plate appearances-11th, steal attempts-4th)uThrough games on May 9, UT sophomore

Zach Osborne ranks as the 32nd most difficult player to strike out in the NCAA. He is cur-rently averaging just one punchout every 16.2 at-bats. He has gone down on strikes just 11 times all season (five looking, six swinging).uIn his first 12 starts of 2010, senior Stephen

McCray has already induced 92 groundball outs while giving up 72 flyouts in at team-high 77.2 innings, good for a 1.28 groundout/flyout ratio. In comparison, McCray’s G/F ratio last season was 0.75, as he recorded just 44 groundouts in 52.1 total innings of work.uIncluding his two seasons at North

Carolina, Tennessee junior and Knoxville native Rob Catapano has started 12 collegiate games. The team he has started for has won all 12 contests, including all five of the games he has started this season for the Big Orange.

HOW SWEEP IT IS!Tennessee recorded its first SEC series sweep

of the season on the road against Georgia, May 7-9.

The sweep was UT’s second of the season (Xavier) and first in conference play since it took all three on the road at Vanderbilt to end the 2009 campaign.

As a team, the Vols finished the weekend with a team batting average of .391, led by eight hits from Liles. Hawn had three longballs in the three games against the Bulldogs, while juniors P.J. Polk and Blake Forsythe added two each. In all, Tennessee scored 43 runs, the most it has had in a single series since it scored 47 times in a three-game set against Radford in 2005. It was also perfect on the basepaths, stealing 11 bases in 11 attempts.

IT JUST KEPT GOING AND GOING...Against Georgia on May 8, UT scored 13 runs

on 12 hits, including four home runs, and four walks. And that was just in the third inning.

In all, the Volunteers sent 19 batters to the plate in the frame, scoring nine runs before recording the first out. The Big Orange used the half-inning, one of the most productive in school history, to cruise to a series-clinching victory over Georgia, 25-5.

At the end of the day, UT tied the school’s single-game record with 28 hits, including 12 of the extra-base variety, accounting for 52 total bases which shattered the previous program record of 47. The Big Orange also set a school record with 55 total at-bats and tallied its most runs against a Southeastern Conference opponent since it defeated Georgia, 28-10, on April 19, 1997.

POLK JOINS THE 20-10 CLUB With a solo shot against Kentucky on May

1, UT junior P.J. Polk became just the fifth Tennessee player since 1980 to record 10+ home runs and 20+ stolen bases in a single season. The complete list is below.

TALE OF TWO HALVESIt has been a tale of two halves this year

for Tennessee. Through the first 28 games of a 56-game schedule, it was all about starting pitching as Bryan Morgado, Steven Gruver, Stephen McCray, Rob Catapano, Steve Crnkovich and Aaron Tullo combined to post a 3.98 ERA. In comparison the ERA for Tennessee starters at the end of the 2009 campaign was 6.29. While they were doing the job on the mound, the Vol offense got off to a bit of a rough start, hitting just .280 as a team.

Since reaching the midpoint of its slate, however, the strong suit for the Big Orange has switched to offense, as it is hitting at a .325 clip and averaging 9.00 runs per game in its last 20 contests, including eight games with double-digit run totals. The pitching, meanwhile, has had a rough go of it though, with the squad ERA dropping to 6.67 in those 20 games.

The one constant all season has been the team’s stellar defensive play. Tennessee cur-rently ranks 13th in the nation and has the second-best fielding percentage in the SEC with a mark of .976. The Vols have just 44 errors in the first 48 games of the season, including 17 errorless contests.

FORSYTHE, DUFFY HEATING UPAlthough juniors Blake Forsythe and Matt

Duffy both got off to a slow start at the plate this season, they have been seeing the ball well in recent weeks.

Forsythe has hit safely in 14 of the team’s last 17 contests, including nine straight, after recording a hit in just eight of the first 20 games of the year. Over the last 14 games, Forsythe has begun to find his home run swing, hitting seven longballs in those con-tests. During his current nine-game hitting streak, the Memphis, Tenn., native is hitting .385 with four home runs and 12 RBIs.

Duffy started to turn things around at the beginning of conference play, during which he is leading the team with a .386 batting average. In the first game of a doubleheader against LSU on March 27, Duffy launched his first home run in a Tennessee uniform. HIs second came at Ole Miss on April 3, he blasted his third at Mississippi State on April 13 and his fourth came in the series opener against Kentucky on April 30. He had 16 in his first two collegiate seasons, which he played at Vermont.

SO MANY CHOICES...When UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh fills

out his lineup card, he certainly has plenty of options at hand defensively. Already this season, UT has had 16 players combine to play a total of 37 different positions. The list is below:

Cody Grisham (4) - 2B/SS/3B/RFMatt Hamaker (4) - C/1B/3B/LFMatt Duffy (3) - 3B/SS/LFBlake Forsythe (3) - C/1B/3BChris Fritts (3) - LF/CF/RFJosh Liles (3) - LF/CF/RFDrew Steckenrider (3) - LF/CF/RFCody Hawn (2) - 1B/3BAdam King (2) - C/1BKhayyan Norfork (2) - 2B/LFPJ Polk (2) - LF/CFMatt Ramsey (2) - RF/LFZach Osborne (1) - SSCody Stubbs (1) - 1BCharley Thurber (1) - RFAndy Yates (1) - LF

SHUFFLING THE DECKThe same theory applies to the batting

order, as Todd Raleigh has used a total of 47 different ineups through the first 48 games in an attempt to find the combination that will allow the UT offense to run most efficiently. The Vols used their Opening Day batting order on Feb. 26 at Oregon State but have used a different combination in every game since.

PUTTING THE PEDAL TO THE METAL The Vols have been considerably more

aggressive on the basebaths this season than they have been in either of the first two years of the Raleigh regime.

Through 48 games, Tennessee has already stolen 70 bases, led by 22 from junior P.J. Polk, 17 by Josh Liles and 14 by Khayyan Norfork. By comparison, the team had just 39 in all of 2009 with Liles leading the way with a squad-best eight. Polk, Liles and Norfork join Andy Simunic (20) in 2008 as the only players in the last three years to reach double-digits in stolen bases.

This year’s team total includes a game against Georgia on May 7 in which the Vols claimed seven stolen bases, the most since UT swiped nine bags against Morehead State on Feb. 8, 2003.

SETTING THE TABLETennessee has been tremendously success-

ful at finding ways to get on base to start an inning this season. Through 48 games, the Vols have reached base 180 times in 423 leadoff opportunities, which equates to 42.6 percent of the time.

Just a little more than half of those success-ful chances have come via a hit though, as UT leadoff hitters are batting just .278 (97-for-349) this season. Instead, the Vols have been working their way on base with 59 leadoff walks and 14 hit-batters.

RAMSEY AND STECKENRIDER SHOWING OFF THEIR VERSATILITY

Tennessee has a pair of two-way players on its roster this season in sophomore Matt Ramsey and freshman Drew Steckenrider. Both players double as power-arms out of the bullpen with fastballs that routinely sit in the mid-90s, as well as power-hitting outfielders.

Steckenrider has seen more action on the mound than at the plate during his rookie campaign, as he has struck out 10 batters in seven innings of work. His only hit of the sea-son came in his first collegiate at bat, when he lined a home run over the right-field fence at Lindsey Nelson Stadium against Xavier on Feb. 19.

Ramsey, meanwhile, has provided a spark offensively for the Vols since first being inster-ted into the lineup against LSU on March 27. Since then, he is hitting .333 with 24 hits, 11 of them for extra bases, including five round-trippers and 17 RBIs. The Knoxville native also doubles as the team’s closer, having picked up four wins and a pair of saves in 18 appear-ances. He has 31 punchouts in 26.1 innings and an ERA of 4.78.

Against Mississippi State on April 16, Ramsey recorded a rare feat, hitting a home run and notching a save in a 15-13 win over the Bulldogs. He became the first UT player to accomplish the feat since Jeff Lockwood did it against MTSU on March 11, 2008.

WELCOME TO THE VOLUNTEER FAMILY! At 12:43 a.m. on Monday, April 19, Tennessee

Head Coach Todd Raleigh and his wife Stephanie, welcomed Todd Anthony Raleigh, Jr., to the Volunteer baseball family. He will be known as “T” and measured in at 9.1 pounds and 21 inches at birth.

GRUVER PULLS DOUBLE DUTY UT sophomore southpaw Steven Gruver

became the first Tennessee pitcher since 2002 to start and win two games in a single week, picking up a victory over Belmont on April 27 and leading the Vols to a series-clinching tri-umph over Kentucky on May 2. The last pitch-er to accomplish the feat for the Big Orange was Jeffery Terrell when he tallied wins over Tennessee Tech and Ole Miss on April 24 and 27, 2002, respectively.

WALK-OFF HOMER LANDS FORSYTHE ON CB360.COM WEEKLY HONOR ROLL

After playing a large role in a pair of walk-off victories for Tennessee over Vanderbilt in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 25, including hitting a game-ending home run in the 11th inning of the first game, junior Blake Forsythe was named to the CollegeBaseball360.com Primetime Performer Weekly Honor Roll on April 28.

Forsythe, who hit .313 with six RBIs while leading the Big Orange to its second Southeastern Conference series victory of the season and an overall record of 3-1 last week,

2010 SEC STANDINGS

Page 6: Tennessee Baseball Game Notes - vs. MTSU - 5-12

Page 6 2010 Tennessee Volunteer Baseball Game Notes

becomes the third UT player to be honored by CB360 this season, following in the footsteps of sophomore Steven Gruver (March 2) and junior P.J. Polk (April 7).

A Memphis, Tenn., native, Forsythe joins 18 other standouts on the weekly honor roll. The list is comprised of four pitchers, three second basemen, two catchers, a pair of first basemen, two third baseman, a shortstop, two outfielders, a designated hitter and a pair of two-way talents. Of the 19 total players, there are six seniors, including a redshirt senior, seven juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.

A 6-2 catcher, Forsythe played an instru-mental role in all three of Tennessee’s wins last week, starting off with a 3-for-5, four RBI effort

against Western Carolina on Wednesday. He finished a triple away from the cycle in that contest, launching his seventh home run of the year, and scored a pair of runs as UT cruised to an 18-8 road triumph.

After a tough game against Vanderbilt on Friday, he came through in a big way in the first contest of the doubleheader on Sunday, winning the game for the Vols with a two-strike, two-out, two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning. After falling behind in the count 0-2, he fouled off three consecutive pitches before getting the one he wanted and depositing it well over “The Porch” in left field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

He then added another hit and a key, four-pitch walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh of the second game of the day. The walk kept the final inning alive as the Orange and White rallied for two runs with two outs on the board to win 4-3 over the Commodores, claiming a doubleheader sweep and Tennessee’s second SEC series vic-tory of the season.

Forsythe’s terrific play carried over into this week as he led the Vols to a 13-5 rout of Belmont on Tuesday night, taking over the team lead in home runs with a grand slam in the seventh inning, his ninth dinger of the 2010 campaign. He finished the contest 2-for-3 with a career-high tying five RBIs, as he also had a run-scoring double off the top of the wall in center earlier in the game.

POLK GARNERS CONFERENCE, NATIONAL HONORS AFTER STELLAR WEEK

Following a week in which he hit .524 while leading Tennessee to a 4-1 record March 30-April 4, junior P.J. Polk was honored with a pair of accolades, claiming Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors from Collegiate Baseball newspaper in addition to his second Southeastern Conference Player of the Week award this season.

Polk finished the week with a team-high 11

hits in 24 at-bats to pace the Volunteers to mid-week triumphs over Tennessee Tech and Presbyterian College and back-to-back victo-ries on the road against No. 11 Ole Miss to lead UT to its first SEC series victory of the season. A 5-9 outfielder, he also paced the squad with nine runs while blasting out four longballs, including the first two home run performance of his career against the Rebels on Saturday.

In all, the Murfreesboro, Tenn., native had four home runs on the week to give him a team-leading six on the year. He had at least one hit in all five games to extend his season-long hitting streak to 10 games, moving him within one of his career-long streak of 11 games. Polk slugged at an incredible 1.095 rate while posting an on-base percentage of .615 as he walked four times and was hit by a pitch once. He also stole two bases in two attempts to increase his team-high total to 14 on the year.

GRUVER NAMED “CARE”ACTER STAR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Steven Gruver has been tabbed as Tennessee’s CAREacter Star Athlete of the Week. The CAREacter Program is based on a five-point star system that includes the basic traits of a true champion, whether on or off the field. Those traits are attitude, character, grades, community service and performance.

A southpaw from Canfield, Ohio, Gruver has been a mainstay in the Vols’ weekend rotation this season. For the year, he is 1-3 with a 6.49 ERA in seven starts. He holds strikeout-to-walk ration of 4.43:1 with 31 punchouts and just seven walks in 34.2 innings of work this season.

This semester, Gruver is participating in the VOLScholar Program for academic and citi-zenship-building and wears the VOLScholar logo on his uniform as the holder of a 3.0 or better grade-point average. The sophomore has a 3.75 GPA as an exercise science major.

Every two weeks one student-athlete is select-ed as the school’s “Star Athlete of the Week” based on the aforementioned five criteria. As a reward for their accomplishments, hon-orees will be recognized each week by their local media and presented with a T-shirt and a letter acknowledging them as their coun-ty’s “Star Athlete of the Week.” Sophomores Adam Adkins and Charley Thurber were UT’s first two recipients of the award this season..

MORGADO CLAIMS SEC PITCHER OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES

Following a stellar outing against Connecticut on Saturday, March 13, University of Tennessee junior southpaw Bryan Morgado became the first Volunteer in nearly three years to claim Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week honors. The last UT player to earn the accolades was James Adkins in the 12th week of the 2007 campaign.

Morgado twirled an absolute gem in the Orange and White’s 3-2 victory over the Huskies, claiming his second win of the sea-son with seven shutout innings of one-hit ball. The 6-3 lefty set a season high with nine strikeouts, while surrendering just one hit in the first inning. He then proceeded to sit down 19 of the final 21 batters he faced, including 12 straight at one point. He allowed just one runner, the double in the opening frame, to advance past first base during his seven innings on the mound.

With his nine punch-outs, Morgado moved his career total to 208, passing Luke Hudson (202) and Wyatt Allen (203) for sole possession of ninth place on UT’s all-time strikeout list.

FRITTS’ DIVING CATCH EARNS SPOT AMONG SPORTSCENTER’S TOP 10 PLAYS OF THE DAY

The diving catch made by University of Tennessee freshman outfielder Chris Fritts in the seventh inning of the Vols’ Feb. 28 game against No. 10 Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., was tabbed No. 9 on SportsCenter’s Top 10 “Plays of the Day” on Monday, March 1.

It was also shown on the show “SportsNation” the following day, when it was voted “More Athletic” than an in-your-face dunk by the Phoenix Suns’ Amar’e Stoudemire. It did not, however, win a vote against a LeBron James alley-oop when it was up for the best play of the week award, but it did garner 39 percent of the vote.

With a runner on first and one out just moments after the Beavers scored their first run of the day on Sunday, OSU’s Carter Bell drove an 0-1 pitch from UT starter Stephen McCray to deep left. Although the ball was slicing away from him, Fritts made a leaping grab, somersaulted on the warning track and gunned it back into shortstop Zach Osborne who was able to relay it to Cody Stubbs at first to double up Parker Berberet to end the inning and the Oregon State threat.

GRUVER RECOGNIzED AS CB360 PRIMETIME PITCHER OF THE WEEK

After logging seven shutout innings against 10th-ranked Oregon State on Feb. 27, University of Tennessee sophomore southpaw Steven Gruver was named the CollegeBaseball360.com Primetime Pitcher of the Week, the web site announced March 2.

A native of Canfield, Ohio, Gruver picked up the first win of his collegiate career with a sterling performance against the Beavers on Saturday, getting the Volunteers back on track after a 17-1 loss the previous night. The 6-1 lefty threw seven shutout innings, while striking out a career-high nine and allowing only three hits and one walk.

Gruver allowed just two runners to reach second and none to advance to third during his time on the mound. He threw a total of 97 pitches with 65 going for strikes and sat down 11 of the final 12 batters he faced, including 10 straight at one point.

POLK CLAIMS INITIAL SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS OF 2010 SEASON

After leading Tennessee to its first season-opening series sweep since 2004 with a trio of three-hit performances, junior outfielder P.J. Polk was named the first Southeastern Conference Player of the Week of the 2010 campaign on Feb. 22. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native was 9-for-12 during the open-ing weekend, good for a stellar .750 batting average.

In addition to his nine hits, Polk also walked three times to allow him to reach base safely in 12 of his 16 plate appearances. The 5-9 speedster posted a tremendous 1.083 slug-ging percentage with four doubles and five singles, while also adding a pair of stolen bases, two RBIs, a sacrifice fly, as assist from his position in left field and a team-high seven runs.

The award was the second of Polk’s career, as he also earned the honors in week nine last season after hitting for a .455 average in the Volunteers’ series win on the road against top-ranked LSU.

FORSYTHE NAMED TO JOHNNY BENCH AWARD WATCH LIST

Following a stellar sophomore season and a strong start to the 2010 campaign, the Greater

Wichita Area Sports Commission announced that UT junior catcher Blake Forsythe was named to the Watch List for the 2010 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza.

Fifty-three catchers were nominated for the award by their coaches. Because the award is given annually to the top division one catcher, the list will be updated to include other candi-dates until May 5, 2010.

MORGADO RETURNS FOR JUNIOR SEASON; BACK IN THE ROTATION

A third-round pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2009, UT junior Bryan Morgado is one of just two college players drafted in the first three rounds to return to school, joining Arizona State pitcher Josh Spence.

In 2009, the Miami, Fla., native started five games and made 15 appearances out of the bullpen for the Volunteers. He finished the year with a 4-2 record, a 6.36 ERA and two saves, while striking out a team high 75 bat-ters in 52 1/3 innings.

The 6-3 left-hander has returned to the Tennessee rotation as its Friday night starter in 2010 after spending most of his sophomore campaign pitching out of the bullpen.

SUMMER LEAGUE SUCCESS FOR VOLSAfter a strong finish to the 2009 season, a

numbe of Vols were able to carry that momen-tum over into summer league action where they put their talents on full display.

Junior Bryan Morgado spent his summer helping to lead the Bourne Braves to their first-ever league championship in the presti-gious Cape Cod League. In the regular season portion of the team’s schedule, he threw 32.1 innings, amassing a 2-1 record with a 3.06 ERA in eight appearances, including six starts.

While Morgado was setting down hitters in Cape Cod, UT sophomore Steven Gruver was dominating the Northwoods League, earning postseason all-star honors. As the undisputed ace of the La Crosse Loggers pitching staff, Gruver put together a stellar 7-1 record and 2.23 ERA in 14 appearances, while leading his team to the championship series.

FORSYTHE SPENDS SUMMER WITH USA COLLEGIATE NATIONAL TEAM

Following a breakout season in 2009, junior catcher Blake Forsythe completed a stint with the USA Collegiate Baseball National Team this summer, where he hit at a .293 clip with a pair of home runs and nine RBIs. He also walked 21 times in as many games, en route to an impressive .500 on-base percentage. He is the 17th Vol to have either played for or been invited to try out for Team USA.

NEW FACES IN THE CROWDThe Volunteers have welcomed 14 newcom-

ers to Rocky Top this season. Highlighting the group are four freshmen that heard their name called in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. The class includes a total of nine freshmen, two transfers and three junior college players.

NEW FACES ON THE COACHING STAFFIn addition to the 14 new players, Tennessee

also welcomes a trio of new coaches in pitch-ing coach Jason Beverlin, volunteer assistant Bill Currier and strength and conditioning coach Herman Demmink. Former volunteer assistant Nate Headley also moved into a full-time position as the team’s director of opera-tions during the offseason.

CATAPANO BRINGS CWS EXPERIENCEJunior left-handed pitcher Rob Catapano

brings an element to this year’s team that no other Volunteer can claim: experience playing in the College World Series.

The 6-0 Knoxville native is donning the Orange and White for the first time in 2010 after sitting out a season after transferring from North Carolina. During his time as a Tar Heel, Catapano amassed a 5-1 record and 3.42 ERA in 46 appearances, including seven starts.

North Carolina advanced to the College World Series in both of his seasons in Chapel Hill. Catapano twirled 1 1/3 innings of score-less relief against Rice, as well as a a third of an inning versus Oregon State in the squad’s first go-around and another perfect inning against Fresno State the following year.

HOMEGROWN TALENT PLENTIFUL ON TENNESSEE ROSTER

Tennessee’s roster includes 16 players from the state of Tennessee (44 percent of the ros-ter). Four Vols are from Knox County and one is from Hamilton County (Chattanooga), while five other hail from West Tennessee and six are from Middle Tennessee.

VERMONT’S LOSS IS TENNESSEE’S GAINWhen the University of Vermont made the

decision to disband its baseball program last year, Catamount coaches and players were not sure what their futures held. For two, shortstop Matt Duffy and head coach Bill Currier, their paths would lead to Tennessee.

The 2009 America East Conference Player of the Year, Duffy found out he would be playing

in Knoxville in April. It wasn’t until the next January though, that he discovered that he would be joined by his former head coach, as Bill Currier assumed the reigns as UT’s volun-teer assistant coach.

Duffy, who has moved to third with the Vols, hit .388 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs en route to second-team All-American honors. Currier coached at Vermont for 22 years, put-ting together a record of 486-470.

SECOND PHASE OF RENOVATIONS UNDER-WAY AT LINDSEY NELSON STADIUM

The second of four phases of renovations is nearing completion at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Crews have already finished add-ing a new club area and MVP seating behind home plate that will allow fans to sit closer to the field. Permanent chair-back seating has also been added throughout the entire main grandstand, while the stadium’s exterior has been faced with brick. In addition, the visitor’s locker room behind the third-base dugout has been renovated and a a new batting cage facility, approximately 60 yards in length, will be added down the right-field line.

The first phase, complete prior to the 2009 season, included more than $4 million worth of improvements, primarily to player devel-opment areas. Work was finished on a team clubhouse that features a state-of-the art lock-er room, training room and coaches’ office complex. Phase I also included the addition of nearly 1,000 seats down the right-field line, as well as a party plaza, and saw the field surface replaced.

Phase three will include the construction of a new press box and luxury suites, while the fourth and final phase will add permanent stands down the left-field line.

BASEBALL HOSTS 18TH ANNUAL LEAD-OFF BANQUET; ANNOUNCES ALL-DECADE TEAMS

Former University of Tennessee standouts James Adkins and Mike Lincoln joined fellow former Vols and current professional play-ers J.P. Arencibia, Chase Headley and Luke Hochevar as part of the speaker panel fea-tured at the 18th Annual Tennessee Baseball Leadoff Banquet on Feb. 5 at the Knoxville Convention Center.

The team also announced the 2000-09 All-Decade first and second teams at the ban-quet. The two teams include a total of 30 play-ers, including 19 that played in the College World Series and 12 that claimed All-American honors during their time at Rocky Top.

SEC COACHES PICK VOLS TO FINISH SIXTH IN PRESEASON POLL

Tennessee was picked to finish sixth in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division, as determined by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches, the conference office announced prior to the season. LSU was predicted to repeat as the 2010 SEC champions.

In the overall SEC Champion vote, LSU received five of a possible 11 votes. Florida received four votes while Arkansas had three. In addition to picking a preseason SEC cham-pion, the league’s head coaches voted a pre-dicted order of finish in the SEC Eastern and Western Divisions.

In the Eastern Division, Florida was the favorite with 64 of a possible 66 points. South Carolina came in second with 52 points and Georgia third with 42. Tennessee finished with a total of 19 points in the poll. LSU was named the favorite in the Western Division with a total of 63 points. Arkansas was second with 59, while Ole Miss, who shared the overall title last season with LSU, finished third with 39.

Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

VOLUNTEERS ON THE TUBEThe Volunteer baseball team will be fea-

tured in a total of 13 televised games in 2010. In addition, 46 of the squad’s 56 regular-season games are scheduled for broadcast locally on WNML “The Sports Animal” (AM 990, FM 99.1 and 99.3), with veteran play-by-play man John Wilkerson on the call. ESPN360.com will stream each television broadcast live online except for UT’s ESPNU contest against Kentucky on April 30 and its games on SportSouth at Ole Miss on April 4 and against Kentucky on May 1 and 2 in Knoxville.

The 13 televised contests are part of the SEC’s 2010 baseball television schedule, the first under a new 15-year contract with ESPN. The regular-season package will include 87 broadcasts in 2010, up from eight games in 2009. In addition, all games from the 2010 SEC Tournament will continue to be broadcast, with the championship game airing nationally on ESPN2.

BASEBALL PARTICIPATES IN LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK, RAISES MORE THAN $9,500 FOR CANCER RESEARCH

For the third consecutive year, the University of Tennessee baseball team participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk at Circle Park on the UT campus this past November. The Volunteers exceed-ed their fundraising goal, raising $9,509 to increase their three-year total to more than $22,000 in support of research into the treat-ment and prevention of cancer.
