Reflection on the

New Campus!By Molly & Kristina =)

Have you been enjoying the new campus? What do you like

and dislike about it?

“I Like the new school, and Love subway and the new dance studio but the school is really big. I miss the old school and I am loving the new one.”

-Maia Macpherson

“I like the new campus because there is always something to do but I don’t like how we never see the elementary and high school like in the old campus.”

-Emma Parks

“I like the new campus because

it’s big BUT I don’t like

fountains because they’re

pointless. I think everyone

hates them.”

-Chan Shin

I am really enjoying the new campus! It is so wonderful to have new, state of the art facilities like our new theater and field house! I particularly like how bright and sunny my new classroom is. I don't really dislike anything, although I sometimes miss the small and intimate nature of our old Jumeirah campus.-Ms. reynolds

New ASD campus in construction.

First quarter was tough it didn’t

feel like home. It was really cold

and empty, but now its good like

my classroom is big with huge

windows. I love the library,

plants, and water features. I

don’t like hallway floors cause

it shows stains. I love the new

theatre and the school reminds

me of a collage campus.

-Mrs. Russell

I have enjoyed the new campus, and I guess what I like is that it’s big and it has lots of stuff. I don’t like it because you don’t see your friends and the construction is horrible and it’s so dusty.

New Theatre By: Aya, Tala, and Chase.

Seating:

There are currently 599 seats however, when row X is added there will be 628 seats. If necessary (like for graduation) they are going to add 4 extra rows to add up to a total of 748 seats.

The Process:

Before commencing to the theatre, the performers would go to the costume room to pick up their costume, then they go to the makeup room to fix their hair and makeup, then they go to the changing rooms to put on their costume, and lastly they head to the black-box theatre to wait for their turn, they can determine their turn, by watching what is currently going on during the show on the projector.

The Lights:

The theatre is designed just like a Broadway theatre, it has over 100 different lights. In addition, there are four 360 lights, which are spotlights that rotate 360 degrees.

Mr. Fuentes, one of the P.E. teachers, said that there is more information about rock climbing. There are many steps before rock climbing. First of all, the rope that holds the climber isn’t stiff which means it gives a lot which is good. When climbing you need to have a team. The team consists of a climber, a belayer, and two shadows. Your team needs to have communication between each other, awareness, last thing is, that before the climber climbs they need to communicate with the belayer by saying these things:

1. On belay?2. Belay on.3. Ready to climb?4. Climb on.5. Climbing

After you’ve said those things you’re ready to go! So come on down and try it out!

Finally, the new high school and middle school gym is here. It includes everything you need to be a healthy, fit candidate at this school. It has several tennis courts as well as a basketball court, an indoor track, a gym, and last, but certainly not least, the amazing ROCK CLIMBING WALL!

The rock climbing wall is part of the Quarter 4 physical education program. When on the rock wall, there is the choice of either a free climb sideways or the opportunity to harness up and climb your way to the top. When climbing to the top there are also a countless number of ways to climb up. There are challenges or effortless climbs.

Not only that, but there is a side curriculum that includes signing on separately to go on the wall. Natasha Graves gave us a sneak peek to the after school climbing, “There are many different paths to going up the wall not only that but the belaying people are very nice. You can sign up for a class and when you learn how to belay you take a test then you’ll be able to belay your friends. But its better to do it with your friends, then you can belay each other making it more fun. You can sign up for Sunday and Wednesday. You have to pay for only three classes, and then the rest is free. I recommend it, it’s a good activity to do with your friends as well as a good work out”

So as you can see, the rock climbing wall isn't just open during P.E. but it also includes after school.

Make A Wishby Molly Pronko & Kristina Pranno

Make a wish foundation is a foundation that grants wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions. The foundation’s mission re!ects the life changing impact that a Make A Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors, and entire communities.

On May 4th, Kids for Wish Kids brought us the annual fashion show. The fashion show is for any middle schooler to show off their school spirit and clothes. The fashion show is to raise money to grant kids wishes.

Make a wish

foundation was founded by a little boy named

Chris Greicius in 1980. It was founded when Chris realized that his wish was to become a police officer.

Kids for wish Kids (KFWK) is an opportunity for kids to get involved with helping other kids. Not only does this program help increase the awareness of the Make A Wish foundation but it also involves adolescence and young adults in helping to grant wishes to children with life threatening illnesses in the UAE.

Six plays...two nights...eighty actors. How did we do it?

That’s easy! We attended and had supported our friends and

family in order to have fun AND entertain ourselves to the fullest.

Why should you see the One Acts?

Have you ever wanted to see a live performance by one of

the biggest theaters in Dubai? Well we just did! Our young

middle school folk at ASD have performed amazing plays to do

with crime scene investigations. Every year ASD has a

staggering idea to put forward a One Act festival for Middle

School Students. It is a processed collage of plays with a certain

number of students in each showing. It definitely takes patience

on Mr. Bell’s part, because he has to organize eighty actors!

Keep it up Mr. Bell.

Behind the scenes talk with a cast member and the main

coordinator himself!

I had an interview with a cast member and along with Mr. Bell. They

both answered questions concerning the One Acts, in pure depth. Amani

Abid (Grade 7) had performed on Friday, and she gave me the scoop on

her opinion on these plays.

Why do you encourage students next year to do the One

Acts?I would encourage my classmates to do the One Acts because it is

a really fun experience and you learn more about drama. The plays are

also very funny!

Ms. Abid gave great insight and perspective to share with us

Middle Schoolers. In fact even Mr. Bell had a few words to say!:

What are the One Acts? The One Acts are 6 short plays directed by Teachers and/or Staff.  Each play also has one or two Assistant High School Directors as well.  The One Acts are an opportunity for as many Middle School actors to be involved in a play as possible.  The plays often have a cast of anywhere from 10 to 20 actors.

Why is the tradition at ASD? (Why do we do it!) The One Acts were started as an opportunity for the Middle School community to come together in celebration of theater, Mr. Ridley began the One Acts about 10 years ago.  His vision was to bring teachers, Staff, and student actors together in one Middle School event.  The ASD One Acts were inspired by theater festivals Mr. Ridley has attended throughout the United States and Canada.  In these festivals, schools from all over bring their short plays together to one venue for a competition where judges decide on a winning play.  Instead, a theater professional is invited each year to attend.  Their purpose is to critically watch the plays and provide feedback to the actors and directors at the end of the night.  So, not only is it a night of entertainment, but a learning opportunity for everyone involved.

What is your favorite part of them?

My favorite part of any school production is the final performance.  I love to see the look on the actors faces as they are finally able to perform in front of an audience.  They have memorized their lines, created their characters, rehearsed every moment in the play over and over again.  They have no idea, though, how the audience is going to receive their play and they have butterflies in their stomachs the size of pick-up trucks.  Every show there is always an actor who approaches me and says, 'I can't do this!'  I tell them they've already done the work, now it's time to have fun.  When they finally do step on stage and perform in front of their friends and families, they feel that magic connection between the actor and audience.  That's a feeling that can't be found anywhere else but on a stage.  My favorite part of any production is watching a young actor get that feeling for the first time.  It's an unforgettable moment.

While Mr. Bell is on the move to make this a great

production, our family and friends worked long hard hours in

order to get the job done. During this event we sat in our seats

and encountered many different people performing many

different layouts of acting structure. It was great, keep up the

good work actors! We hope to see new and old members once

again!

The Barshan Beasts

by Gabriel Bitar

Apparently something has been lurking the halls of ASD. Something has been stealing the souls of poor children staying after school. This something has taken

several different forms and appeared in several different locations in and around Al Barsha. With this information, we have concluded that there are several

different monsters. Around the school, children have been calling these monsters the Barshan Beasts, after their strange forms and powers. Students are advised to

leave school immediately after it is let out. However, there is not enough evidence that supports the

theory of the Barsha Beasts to stop

school and issue a search. Several students, including Richard Kestner (grade 8), Shazil Mirza (grade 8), and Sophia Syed (grade 8) have disappeared in the last

month. Different theories state what happened to them, the most common is that they were taken by the Beasts. Pictures of the Beasts have been taken around Al Barsha,

but none of them in ASD. Students are warned to keep safe and avoid encounters with the Beasts. If you have any evidence supporting this theory, please inform your teachers

or parents. Beware however, some of them may be beasts as well!

EVIDENCE

Local student Khayre Ali has adapted his physical form into that of an older, more rugged man, to scare away the Barshan Beasts and prevent them from attacking him A monster

resembling a Barsha Beast was spotted at the Palm yesterday

Apparently, there are several Barshan Beasts that have taken on ghost forms, and have the ability to go through walls and other solid surfaces. Wallah.

The most famous unsolved crime case around the world!

Until now, there have been many

unsolved crimes. It is said that only 10 percent

of the crimes that happen are solved and 90

percent remains unsolved. Among them, the

most famous unsolved crime is either the

Zodiac killings case or Jack the Ripper case.

Jack the Ripper was given his name

because he signed his name as Jack the

Ripper in his letters. It is believed that he killed

at least five women. Some say it was six, and

other say it was nine, but we don’t know for

sure exactly how many women Jack the Ripper

killed. After Jack the Ripper murdered his

victims, he sometimes took their organs. One

of his victims, Catherine Eddowes, was found

with her uterus and one of her kidneys

removed. Some medical experts argue that

Jack the Ripper was an experienced surgeon

while others say that he was a butcher. There

were over 400 suspects for this case but none

of them proved to be the killer. This case

happened over a century ago so we can be

sure that Jack the Ripper is dead by now.

The other most famous crime is the

Zodiac case. The Zodiac appeared in October

1966. The killer’s first victim was Cheri Jo

Bates. He disabled the victim’s car first and

waited for her to come and try to start her car.

When Bates’s car didn’t work, police assume

that the Zodiac offered Bates a ride and lured

her into a dark driveway. The evidences on

Bates’s body show that she had been beaten,

choked, and slashed. His other victims were

either stabbed or shot to death.

The Zodiac sent many cryptic letters to

the police. To prove that he was the Zodiac, he

mentioned some facts in the letter that only the

police knew about the murder. The Zodiac

stated that he was killing these people to make

them his slaves in afterlife. He always signed

off his letters with his mark (the picture in the

middle on the right hand side).

Once there had been over 2,500 suspects

for this case but the police narrowed it down to

a handful of people. The Vallejo police singled

out a man named Arthur Leigh Allen. The

police did everything to get some information

but Allen died in 1992 from failing health. When

Allen died, the police took some brain tissues

for DNA testing. But the technology at the time

didn’t prove anything.

There are still many crimes going around

in the world right now. But, technology has

developed a lot then before so we are more

safe and we have better chances of catching

criminals.

On April 29, 2011 US President Barack Obama ordered an organized mission against Osama Bin Laden after receiving

a briefing stating that he was apparently spotted somewhere between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Osama was then found living 100 miles away in a mansion in

Abbottabad, Pakistan. President Obama then stated that he was killed by a team of US Navy Seals. President Obama

claims that they broke in to Osama’s mansion with guns and he used his wife

as a human shield to protect himself which was not enough to hold back the bullets that hit him and killed him. The

Navy Seals then left with Osama’s body and returned to the US. They then dumped Osama’s corpse into an ocean. The US are currently debating whether

or not to release the pictures and videos of Osama being killed and his deceased body stating that it may cause

more hatred and violence from Al Qaeda’s end. The US has no doubt that

this is the end to all attacks from Al Qaeda and that they will definitely strike again however the US is ready

for all challenges about to face them. This end’s the life of the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks along with the Pentagon attacks and various other

arranged killings. Bin Laden is dead.

THE BARSHA UPDATE

Page 12: Barsha Buzz Volume 7

On May 2nd 2011, Osama Bin Laden the

most wanted man on earth, was shot and

killed by US Navy Seals. The streets of the US

were filled with men, women, and children

rejoicing over the death of the man behind 911.

However there was no mass celebration at

ASD, at the same time the community was

obviously happy in general. A poll was

conducted to find out more of the opinion of

ASD. Surprisingly from 30 students, 2 said they

were overjoyed, 19 said they were happy but

not overjoyed, and 9 said that they were

neutral. The majority of people seemed to have

different opinions from many in America. We

interviewed those who answered the poll to

get a little more on why this is. Alex Lewis was

one of the people who said they were

overjoyed, “Osama Bin Laden was evil, he

killed thousands of people and he deserved to

die,” Alex said when asked why he felt so

happy. It seems a majority of people in ASD

felt happy when Bin Laden was killed, but still

felt that there is more too it. One of the

comments that was continuously repeated

was, “He was an evil man, but I think killing

him gives people more of a reason to attack

America.” -anonymous. Another repeated

comment was along the lines of this, “I’m

happy that he’s dead, but it’s not something

that’s supposed to be celebrated, it’s still a

death.” -Vinay Ramesh. Another small amount

of people said that they were completely

neutral in the death of Osama Bin Laden. The

one who felt this the most is Arman Sheroff.

Arman had multiple reasons for this that he

told us. “Bin Laden, should have been

captured, but now that he was killed in his

home, there is a much bigger reason for

groups to begin arising in the area has

increased, now Bin Laden is kind of a martyr.”

-Arman Sheroff. Arman brought out this point

and many others that people who are neutral

and happy brought up. Arman also brought up

a point that few people mentioned. “I don’t

think his body should’ve been dumped, just

because he’s still a person and had a family,

and I don’t think that’s following muslim

traditions like they said.” -Arman Sheroff. What

does this mean though? In ASD and America

there seemed to be a mutual happiness in

general. However was America truly as happy

as they seemed on the news or are there

perhaps people who are unsure of Laden’s

death as there are in ASD? Perhaps rather than

ASD’s opinion differing from America’s, only

certain ones are being shown and the truth is

being hidden? Perhaps but for now it seems

ASD’s opinion id slightly less radical than the

US population.

War on Terror is an international

military campaign led by the United

States and the United Kingdom with

the support of other NATO (North

Atlantic Treaty Organization) and non-

NATO countries. The main objective of

this is to defeat terrorists such as

Osama bin Laden and destroy their

organizations, and protect citizens.

However, some people criticize this.

Some critics say that the term “war”

cannot be used for this event, because

there is no defined and identifiable

enemy. Thus making it a potential

framework for perpetual military action

pursuing other goals. Also, they note

that “terrorism” is not an enemy but a

tactic.

President George W. Bush said that

the War on Terror “will not end until

every terrorist group of global reach

h a s b e e n f o u n d , s t o p p e d a n d

defeated.”But the announcement of

such open-ended goals produce and

endless conflict, since these “terrorist

groups” can continue to arise any time.

The War on Terror can be an

overreaction, and ‘terroring back’ is not

the perfect action towards terrorism.

Tsunami Victims Grieve Over Lost Loved Ones

Victims rely on each other during this hard time; sharing food, water, and heat.

JAPAN FACES THE AFTERMATH OF 8.9 EARTHQUAKE

May 10, 2011

THE DISASTER THAT HURT TENS OF THOUSANDS

2:46 P.M. Japan Standard Time. The fifth largest earthquake in recorded history hits Honshu, Japan. Hundreds of miles away the people of Tokyo feel the tremors, which soon turn into violent shakes. Shortly after the earthquake a 33-foot tsunami was triggered, sweeping away cars and houses like toy blocks.

It has been a long and distressing two months for the people of Japan as they continue to bear the burden of the perilous aftermath of the 8.9 earthquake. Since then nothing has been going right. After the earthquake all the nuclear plants were shut down using control rods. But the

purpose of these safety measures was soon diminished when the tsunami struck. On March 12 and 14 another crisis hit Japan; one of the five enormous nuclear plants, Fukushima, had erupted. At first officials claimed the cooling systems would prevent any meltdowns but the tsunami had done too much damage, cutting off electricity and disabling the main cooling system. The radiation gradually rose, and plant operators detected 8 times the regular levels of radiation in the atmosphere surrounding the plant. For the first time, the Fukushima plant was declared a state of emergency, and over 3,000 people

By: Miraal Haq and Math Ramasamy

Page 15: Barsha Buzz Volume 7

residing in areas near the meltdown were sent for evacuation. Traces of radiation were found in the Tokyo water supply and although the radiation levels had reached an extremely high point, for a long time workers could not even attempt to fix it for fear of contamination. The current death toll has risen to more than 18,000 people. Not only has the disaster had a physical impact, but a world-wide economic effect as well. Japanese stocks plummeted soon after the earthquake hit. Toyota Motor Corp. and Sony Corp. were two of the most severely affected companies, due to power shortages in their largest factories. Officials estimate that Japan will need 100 billion dollars for damage costs, and only 3 billion is covered by insurance. Despite all the turmoil, everyone is helping with the recovery effort. Both the US and China have

publicly declared that they will help, as well as several non-profit organizations. You can donate to

Japanese Red Cross Society here: https://gienkin.jrc.or.jp/paypal

Cooling Systems Fail

The cooling systems failed to do their job when the tsunami struck, wiping out electricity and power needed to operate the generators. This crisis has caused many countries to rethink nuclear power as an energy source.

Whats the deal with Mothers’

Day???By a kid who wants to make the world right again.

For centuries, once a year children are left with the burden

of mothers day. On that horrendous holiday, mothers around the

world demand to be pampered and cared for. Well, enough I say

enough! It is time for us kids to take a stand and end Mothers’

day for once and for all. Seriously, this holiday will be put to an

end before you even finish this article. You will be motivated to

create a petition and mail it out to all the children across the

globe. Don’t let the children down, they need a leader.

Now that you are motivated you can read the rest of the

article. As you know you are subjected to serve breakfast in

bed, and give flowers to the very person in your life that

deserves it the least. Fathers’ day is just a distraction to us. It

gets in our way and keeps us from seeing the real truth. We are

being cheated by these so called “holidays,” and we will end it.

These holidays are a damper on society and should be illegal.

Maybe that was a bit dramatic, but I’m exaggerating to make a

point: FEAR IT!

To conclude my rant on Mothers’ day I will find a solution.

Do you know what we need? We need a children’s appreciation

day. Where kids are pampered, and served breakfast in bed. It

is up to us to make this dream a reality. We will not be subjected

to the never-ending giving of flowers any longer. The word Kid

will be in caps once again and it will furthermore reign for our

race. No, not a Children appreciation day, we should have a

Children appreciation week! Once again I have solved the

world’s problems, and you can find out the solutions to other

world problems next time on “WHATS THE DEAL WITH THAT?”

By: Tasha???

CHILDREN APPRECIATION WEEK!!

Children appreciation week has just been declared an international holiday by the U.N. Hallmarks around the world have started producing unnecessary amounts of children appreciation cards. Mothers’ Day has now been officially declared a “Stupid Fad” by various world leaders. It has also been referred to as “lame”, “useless”, and “sooo last century.” Mothers around the world are being forced to shower their children in gifts and further unconditional love than they have already given. Universally, children are being served breakfast in bed, and have been receiving flowers from their loving mothers. Fathers on this planet are being forgotten, and are being replaced by cards and ice-cream. Children are now considered a race, and Bob down the street just ran for president. Are you dreading mothers day? Dread no more, because children appreciation week is coming up on April 34, 2011. Don’t miss this incredibly important holiday. Of course you won’t because mothers in various states and countries are being forced to make sure that Children Appreciation Week is a huge success.

WHATS THE DEAL WITH THAT???

THE CHANGE IN REPORTINGMay 2011

Have you ever wondered how

drastically social media has changed our world today?

How Did Social Media have a Change in Journalism?

THE CHANGE

SOCIAL MEDIATwitter, Myspace, Facebook, Digg, the list could go on and on considering how many social networks there are in this world today. Before all this happened, the governments, newspapers, etc., would have to give out the information, there wasn't any online sources. If there is any new or important subject the minute one person says something the whole world hears about it. Everything is exploded onto the internet. For example, when Osama Bin Laden died, many people the first learned about it via friends on Facebook.

IS IT THE DEATH OF JOURNALISM?Some say Social Media is the death of Journalism, some say its the “birth of a democratic movement” that will emphasize the key factors, it depends on one’s opinion. Many media outlets report a lot on how the Internet/social media, is starting to seriously affect news organizations. Some news organizations are still stumbling on how they can make their news digitally.

THE TEXTING LANGUAGE: WRECKING OUR LANGUAGE?Many people with connections to the internet may have heard of the “LOL”. LOL is a Textese word meaning “laugh out loud”. It is used through out the world, but there has been issues with using it.

! The language used in texting, or Textese, is abbreviation and slangs used in emailing, SMS messaging, instant messaging, etc. ! Many words and phrases have their own abbreviations like “gtg” or “g2g”, meaning “got to go”. Words like “later” could be described by combining words and numbers like “l8r”. But some words without any particular abbreviations are most commonly said by not including the vowels. For example, “computer” could become “cmptr”. There are many other things people describe with Textese like what they are feeling or doing. When they are laughing, they commonly use ”lol”, meaning, “Laugh out loud”. ! However, unlike these,

many words are very inappropriate like “wth”, meaning “what the heck/hell”. So many critical writers like John Hmphrys have been mocking this language saying that this is “wrecking our language” and is showing people that they have become so lazy that they don’t even bother to write with proper grammar and spelling. ! However, the cause of the Textese wasn’t for a bad reason. At first when the idea of text messaging first came out, people were limited with the characters they wrote, so they had to shorten the words, but make it understandable. Also, Textese is very convenient for the little keyboards on the cell phones. By: Chan

Based in San Diego in 1975, Anchorman is both humorous and informative. Ron Burgundy, a famous and successful anchor, has a news team assembled of Brian Fantana, a stylish, self obsessed, arrogant, field reporter. Champ Kind, a Patriot and idiot is the sportscaster. Brick Tamland, a mentally challenged member, who has a habit of saying irrelevant information, is the weatherman.

After a few years of successful anchoring, Ron is told by his boss, Ed Harken, that the news team is the most famous one in San Diego and they will be throwing a congratulation party. There, Ron meets an attractive woman by the name of Veronica Corningstone. after a failed attempt of hitting on her, Veronica leaves.

The next day, Ed informs the news team that he has been forced to hire female anchor, Veronica Corningstone, the woman Ron had hit on the previous night. Itʼs the 70ʼs and a female anchor is breaking

ground. The news team attempts to break Veronica by using sexist approaches, but fails. Ron ends up asking her on a date, in which, against her own word, says yes. At the date, Veronica is impressed by Ronʼs ability to play jazz flute and his charm and decides to get into an intimate relationship.

At this point in the movie, all humor has been stressed out to itʼs farthest and doesn't stop there. It includes slapstick humor which can be considered “stupid”, but still fun to watch. Ron, played by Will Ferrell, does a great job being a naive and immature news anchor, but at the same time plays a serious character in which drives the story onwards.

Soon, Veronica, becomes more famous and Ron, jealous of her getting all the fame and attention, decides to sabotage her in a failed attempt. Veronica, now angered by this, decides to get back at him by editing the teleprompter, that Ron reads ANYTHING off of, rigs with a

destroying line “Screw you, San Diego.”

Three months later, Ron is hated, unemployed, and friendless and has also become an alcoholic. One day, when the famous panda in the zoo, Ling Wong, is about the give birth, all of San Diegoʼs news teams arrive on the scene. A rivalry news team pushes Veronica into the bear enclosure. With no anchor to report this miracle, Ed calls Ron and desperately pleads him to come back. Ron arrives on the scene and jumps in to save Veronica, but fails. The news team then rescues both of them in the nick of time and they reconcile.

All in all, this movie was both fantastic with its driving plot line, and hilarious. Although it may be a little inappropriate at times, it is a movie you should check out especially with the terrific acting of Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate.

Champ

Another monster living in Canada, the Champ is lesser known than the Ogopogo. Living in Lake Champlain, which it was named after, this beast is very similar to Nessie. Champ had been sighted over 240 times. It is considered to be dark in color, have 2 humps, long neck and a small head. Lake Champlain is shared by both the US and Canada, although Champ had been mostly sighted on the Canadian side. New York, Vermont (US) and Quebec(Canada) had been researching the area but found no clues yet. One eyewitness declared: “It looked like a monster from the dinosaur ages.”
