From the Commandant Marines, Auxiliary and Associate Members, I have reached the end of my current tour as the Commandant of the Marine Corps League's Samuel F. Gearhart Detachment #656. I must take this opportunity to offer a heartfelt thanks to the MCL and Auxiliary and Associate members who actively participated in all areas of the SFG Detachment’s service to our community. Thank you to those who worked and continue to work behind the scenes to ensure that Detachment #656 remains a formidable organization. Because of you, our MCL Detachment commands and receives the respect of our community leaders as well as the citizens of the State of Missouri. Your collective efforts have allowed us to remain a solid contributor to the Marine Corps League at the national level but more importantly, a beacon of light in our community. Our community efforts allow us to stand head and shoulders above the BEST! To the MCL Slate of Officers that served over the past two years: I humbly thank each of you. You all exemplify the term Semper Fidelis. To the General Membership and the incoming Slate of Officers: I promise to continue to support the stability of the SFG Detachment. However, I will do this as I reclaim a seat within the ranks of our general membership. As I reflect on the accomplishments over the past two years, I cannot help but smile because of the camaraderie that was generated from all of those who served. I appreciate you all… Thank you for allowing me to serve. Respectfully submitted, Greg Craig, Commandant Samuel F. Gearhart Detachment #656
From the Chaplain We have a new slate of officers this year. We need your support to make our detachment function. Attend our meetings, support our BBQ'S, support our trivia nights and other events. Semper Fi and God Bless, Stanley Scott, Chaplain.

Activities Committee Input for April
Activities - April 2019 Looking for birthdays – Due to a date change we still have time for March and April birthday info up until April 10th on any Detachment or Auxiliary members. Send the following info to [email protected] or leave message at 659-5069: Name: Month: Date: Year: Age: Include Year &/or Age only if you don't mind it being shared at the celebration. Well I certainly hope that spring has finally sprung and we have some nicer weather to look forward to. All told though, March was a pretty good month for the Detachment as far as activities go. We had a great turnout for our dining out at Sweet Smoke BBQ on the 14th quickly followed by our St. Patrick’s Day dinner at the barracks on the 17th. A tip of my hat to everyone who had a hand in the awesome dinner and wonderful desserts. I read somewhere that in Ireland they don’t actually eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day. what a shame, after our great meal all I can say is how very sad for them. Okay enough with the sadness now we shall move on into April… Thur. April 4 thru 6 – Detachment Recruiting/Pistol Raffle Sales at Jacobs Cave Swap Meet: Do you have some time that you could give to this effort at the largest swap meet in the Midwest? This should be a great venue for getting info out about the League and selling our Winner’s Choice Pistol Raffle tickets to help with our projects and charities. Near Versailles, MO with gate hours of 7am to 9pm, we will base our booth hours on availability of volunteers, if you have time on any of these days to help out contact Alan at [email protected] or call 659-5069. With camping available in our booth spot we anticipate that some of us will stay on Thursday and Friday night, care to join us? Fri. April 12th (re-scheduled from April 5th) – Joint March/April Birthday Celebration in the Bunker: Since the joint January/February birthday celebration worked out well and we only have one name for March so far, (there have to be others out there and I know we have a bunch in April, please send the info in ASAP), we are scheduling this as another joint celebration on April 12th. Hatches open at 1730 & we will cut the cake at 1830 so come on out and help us celebrate our members with March and April birthdays. Pizzas available at $5 each in the Bunker.
Start sending May & June Birthday info now, (actually all members birthday info is welcome now), THANK YOU! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all who celebrated birthdays in March! 3/18 Floyd Miller – Hope you and any other’s had fantastic days and are all able to join those with April Birthdays in the Bunker to celebrate on April 12th, see you there! St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburg Pirates Benefit to Help POW-MIA Museum at Jefferson Barracks: Come join us at this game as the Cardinals honor the Marine Family, 100th Anniversary of Women in the Marine Corps and help restoration and renovation efforts of the old 1896 Officers Quarters Building, home of the Jefferson Barracks POW-MIA Museum. April 17th – Deadline for reservations and check or M.O. to be to detachment paymaster. Include your name, address and phone number along with the number of tickets needed and make checks out to “S.F. Gearhart Det” at $30 x number of tickets you want, (great seats which normally run $61 each). Indicate on request if handicapped, wheelchair, or limited step seats are required. Our block of tickets will be sent back to the detachment and distributed as we did last year. May 11th – 12:30pm Special pre-game ceremony honoring Marines with S. St. Louis Det 183 providing Honor Guard. 1:15pm Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh We had a fantastic time at the Marine Day game last year and dinner afterwards. We will have additional info at the April installation and May meeting for those interested in possible options for carpooling and/or dinner afterwards. If you have questions contact Alan Sanning at email [email protected] or 659-5069. Thur. April 23rd - Dining Out: This month we head to 2314 Lorenzo Green Dr at 1830 for our informal dining out at Veit’s Restaurant. Head counts are needed by Friday April 19th, email them to [email protected] or call 659-5069 and leave a message. Put the word out and invite prospective members or a member we haven’t seen in a while. They certainly won’t go wrong with the company or the classic comfort foods, from the Old Time Wilted Lettuce Salad to the fried chicken, catfish or perhaps classic country fried chicken smothered in creamy white gravy. If you have suggestions for League activities, see Alan at the meeting, email [email protected] or call 659-5069.
From The Auxiliary Auxiliary Sisters, This will be my last newsletter as President of our Unit. I want to thank everyone who helped in our endeavors this past year. I especially want to thank my officers who graciously gave their time and talents to our organization:
Senior Vice President Jan Crowe Secretary Jackie Hunter Treasurer Sandi Cole Chaplain Sallie Jacobs
Thank you to everyone who helped out with a BBQ, Trivia Night, meeting meal, soup kitchen, prayers and cards for sick and distressed members across the nation, attended meetings, recruited new members, helped at VA Bingo, contacted members who do not have email, walked in the Christmas Parade and the list goes on and on. I believe we recruited seven new members this past year – way to go ladies. It is wonderful to have new people, new ideas and new opportunities to help our veterans and communities! Our new officers to be installed on Tuesday, April 2: President Jan Crowe
Senior Vice President Sallie Jacobs Junior Vice President Joy Sweigart
Judge Advocate Barb Diemler Secretary Jackie Hunter
Treasurer Sandi Cole Chaplain Sallie Jacobs
Captain of the Guard Dotty Sanning Past President Dotty Sanning (Remember to bring a dessert if you are able) I also want to thank Commandant Greg Craig and his staff for allowing the Auxiliary President to attend and be a part of his staff meetings. The camaraderie experienced was heart-warming. It was truly a blessing to hear about upcoming Detachment activities and events in advance to see how we could help. They were also able to hear about our activities and even volunteered to help us at some of our activities. That is what we are all about.
Belonging to these men of the Marine Corps have been women, attached to them by blood and family ties, who have taken their places besides these Marines in life and have fitted themselves, in their own ways, to be worthy of association with the Marine Corps. Dotty Sanning, President Central Missouri Unit
Marine Corps History Selected April Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance 3 April 1945: On Okinawa, Marines of the III Amphibious Corps continued to make good progress all along their front, clearing Zampa Misaki and seizing the Katchin Peninsula, thus effectively cutting the island in two. By this date (D+2), III AC elements had reached objectives thought originally to require 11 days to take.
5 April 1947: Five Marine guards were killed and eight wounded when attacked by Communist Chinese raiders near the Hsin Ho ammunition depot in Northern China. This last major clash between Marines of the 1st Marine Division and Communist forces occurred shortly after withdrawal and redeployment plans from China were issued for the 1st Division and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing on 1 April.
10 April 1959: Lieutenant Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr. was named as one of the original seven Project Mercury astronauts selected for space training. The seven astronauts, all volunteers, were selected by NASA from an initial group of 110 leading military test pilots. Three years later, on 20 February 1962, Col Glenn would become the first American to orbit the Earth.
12-13 April 1918: Marines of the 4th Brigade suffered their first gas attack on the night and early morning hours of 12-13 April when the Germans bombarded the 74th Company, 6th Marines near Verdun with mustard gas. Nine Marine officers and 305 enlisted Marines were gassed and evacuated, and 30 Marines died from the effects of the gas shells which hit in the middle of the reserve area cantonments in which they were sleeping.
15 April 1962: Marine Corps operational involvement in the Vietnam War began on Palm Sunday when HMM-362 with its Sikorsky UH-34s arrived at Soc Trang in the Delta south of Saigon. The task unit was called "Shufly" and its first operational employment involved lifting Vietnamese troops into battle.
18 April 1983: One Marine Security Guard was killed and seven were wounded when a large car bomb exploded just outside the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. Lance Corporal Robert McMaugh was standing guard at Post 1, just inside the front entrance when the bomb exploded outside the door. The explosion killed 61 people including 17
Americans. LCpl McMaugh was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on 26 April.
21 April 1951: Marine carrier-based airplanes made their first aerial contact with enemy planes over the Korean front lines. Captain Philip C. Delong shot down two YAK fighters and 1st Lieutenant Harold D. Daigh destroyed one more and damaged another in the heavily defended Pyongyang-Chinnanpo area. Both pilots were with VMF-312 flying from the USS Bataan.
27 April 1805: First Lieutenant Presley N. O'Bannon, who with seven other Marines was part of a force of Greeks and Arabs led by American Consul William Eaton, raised the United States flag for the first time over a conquered fortress of the Old World at Derne, a stronghold of the Tripolitan pirates. Two Marines were killed and one wounded in the assault on the walled city.
28 April 1993: The last A-6E Intruder departed from Marine Corps service. Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 332 transferred the last Marine A-6E to St. Augustine, Florida, and prepared for the squadron's transition to the F/A-18D and eventual movement from Cherry Point to Beaufort, South Carolina.
