I’m Dennis and as an agent for the Works I have been distributing the Works local to your homes for many years, so it is likely that you may have seen me on my rounds.
I am now looking to submit some interesting articles, which I hope, will complement our already popular magazine.
For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed- please email [email protected].
As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting a company’s business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

Barnwood Park and Arboretum & “Friends” Many of us living in Barnwood and the surrounding areas will be aware of the Park and Arboretum that
is situated just off Church lane near to St.Lawrences church. Barnwood Arboretum is essentially a
nature reserve situated within Barnwood Park which is owned by the Gloucester City Council.
Recently I caught up with Elaine Keasley, secretary to the Friends of Barnwood Arboretum, who
provided me with an over view of the Groups objectives and activities.
A wildlife meadow is currently being developed in the park whilst and Autumn you could come across
rare breed sheep being used to maintain control of the grassy areas of the Arboretum. Currently
funding is being sought for the provision of a Wild life pond. Plans have been prepared for the pond
project which will cost around £5000 to establish. Funding is being sought from charitable
organisations, anyone interested in providing an element of sponsorship should contact Elaine.
Gloucester City Council Officers not only provide support but are actively involved in the physical work
carried out. Tree Officer, Justin Hobbs, for example, utilises his chain saw skills when needed. As you
can imagine the problem of removing dog excrement is a constant challenge. The Environmental Health
department are planning an awareness day to highlight this unsavoury issue.
Maintenance of the stream is high on the Council’s planning list and whilst dredging would appear to
be the obvious requirement, there are several disadvantages to a dredging operation in the park.
Consequently the Council is considering alternative options to resolve the issue.
A number of Annual events are planned each year which includes a Bird Watching day in January, and a
Community family day in June. This is followed by an al fresco performance by the Rain or Shine
Theatre Troupe who, this year will be performing the Shakespeare play “As you like it”, on 27th
July.
Everyone is welcome to these events which are proving successful year on year.
In 2011, the Park and Arboretum was awarded Green Flag status , for its ship shape appearance and
the role it has in the community. The Friends too were commended for their valuable contribution to
the upkeep of both the Park and Arboretum. Although, it is not the first time the award has been
received the Friends are adamant that every effort will be made to retain this award in future.
Finally, Elaine says that new “friends” are always welcome, therefore to become a Friend of the
Arboretum contact Elaine or Ron Keasley on 01452 533480 or email them at [email protected] or
check the web site at: [email protected]
The “Friends” are a group of local residents who formed the association in
2002.They are passionate about our local area and are pro- actively
developing and establishing the Park and Arboretum as picturesque
facilities and places to be used for everyone’s enjoyment.
In partnership with the Gloucester City Council, the Group carries out
maintenance and horticultural activities about 10 times a year conducting
their activities in a well organised and controlled manner. Actions include:
erecting fencing around new trees, tidying hedges and clearing overgrown
elder and bramble bushes. Whilst ,Trees and Plants are both planted and
pruned. Other tasks include planting bulbs in the spring, laying chippings
on the paths and even building Bird Boxes to accommodate the different
species of bird life that inhabit the reserve.
There is no direct funding for the “Friends”; however, as the majority of
the work is physical, volunteers provide their labour free of charge.
The Arboretum provides an environment from which everyone can find
an interest. The ever increasing number and different type of Ducks in the
park is a magnet for young children and “minders” and judging from the
amount of feeding that goes on, the ducks must be the most well fed
group of birds in Gloucestershire!

At Last! A NEW FORM OF HEATING FROM GERMANY
Simple to install, Powerful, and no more servicing - EVER!
In Germany and Austria it can get as low as -20, even -30ºC and a single snowfall can be as
much as 3ft or more overnight. To deal with this severe cold they need powerful heating able to
cope with sub zero temperatures and sudden climate change. They need excellent control and
above all - low running costs without the need for constant servicing and replacement parts.
The solution, incredibly... is electric! This incredible
heating could be the answer to help beat ever increasing
energy costs and amazingly, it is not gas or oil, or solid
fuel - but clean electric! All you need is standard supply
and NO special tariff like economy 7.
All over Europe more people are choosing to heat their
homes and offices with this very special form of electric
heating in preference to oil gas or E7. In our area, more and more of our customers are making
that same decision and when you see this incredible heating for yourself you could be next! The
heating looks just like conventional radiators, but STOP! it is very different! Put simply, that
clunky central heating boiler needing constant servicing and replacement parts isn’t the only
choice anymore!
Now you can heat your homes, offices, extensions or conservatories with these incredible
heaters providing individual control over every room without the need for a central control or
wasted boiler space. This incredible German heating simply plugs in! Job Done! You can do
just one room or the whole house! This heating, whilst quite NEW in the UK has been
mainstream for a very long time in Germany and Austria. Sunflow Ltd. offer a complete solution which can include disposing of your old central heating
system, even oil tanks! Discover for yourself this incredible German heating.

Elmbridge Junior School – New Year Plans
At Elmbridge Junior school plans are in place to ensure that the Year 2012 will be a
year to remember! A year, which will celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Jubilee
and the spectacle of London’s Olympic Games. It is also a year when the school
celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the school opening in 1952. We will focus on this
momentous event in a later edition of the magazine.
In keeping with the progressive approach of the school, the internal environment will be enhanced significantly by
the production of bespoke art work to display across the stairwells and communal corridors of the school. To ensure
that there is a coordinated approach, a marketing company has been assigned whose tasks will include the
production of enlarged photographs of the children carrying out a variety of activities. These photographs will be
the foundation of the displays around the school, however, it is expected that the decoration of the communal area
will be supplemented by several artistic creations, prepared by members of the school’s newly formed Art clubs.
In fact it was the School’s Council’s pro-active approach that initiated the Art clubs. However, the Council’s
endeavour did not stop there, as another of their ideas has resulted in the provision of a Teaching Assistant to
undergo ‘Forest School’ training. This training will qualify her to oversee different groups of pupils, on a daily basis,
when experiencing the outdoor nature area. Features of the nature area now include: an established pond, various
planters, a greenhouse, and an outdoor classroom. The school, eco- friendly approach is geared to enrich the
learning experiences and ultimately the lives of all the Children.
Clubs form an important part of Elmbridge school life and already many pupils are actively involved in the wide
variety of clubs available at the school, they include clubs for: croquet, karate, orchestra, rock school, gymnastics,
magazine club, choir, lego, tennis and letter writing. Something for everyone to enjoy!
During February, there will be a novice gymnastics competition in Cheltenham, and will be hosted by Head teacher
Glen Tharia. 8 pupils from Elmbridge School will enter the competition and Glen is confident his pupils will do well.
Although the school will not take part in the Diamond Jubilee Pageant or the Diamond Jubilee Beacons, the whole
school will celebrate the Queens Jubilee in a unique way. A “Through the Ages” topic which will focus on the
changing ways people have lived during the different decades from the 1950’s to the present day. Undoubtedly,
the wardrobes and attics of many Grandparents will be raided to ensure that the trends and fashions of yester-year
are recreated accurately!.
Finally, the summer term curriculum will be based very much around the Olympic and Para Olympic Games which
London will be hosting in July& August this year. As the activity programmes unfold it will ensure that there will be a
lot of fit and healthy children ready to enjoy their Summer Vacation!
As you can see from this sample of the schools projects and plans it is gearing up to be a year to remember.

DAVE’S TOP TIPS
PVA adhesive
PVA or Polyvinyl Acetate is, in its simplest form, glue for sticking pieces of paper together. One step up the ladder, and a little stronger, it becomes an excellent wood glue for Diy enthusiasts and joiners alike. In its extreme form it becomes an extremely versatile, waterproof adhesive and sealer, which has an extraordinary number of uses in the building trade.
PVA can be added to a cement mortar mix to give the mix slightly better waterproofing qualities and advanced adhesion to the surface it is applied to. Painting a coat of PVA on the surface before the cement mortar is applied can even further increase this adhesion.
Timber can be sealed with PVA to give it a waterproof quality, although if the surface of the timber is to be subject to any wear or traffic, then PVA, as it is an emulsion, will eventually fail. PVA can also be used to allow ceramic tiles to stick to timber (bath panels etc). At least 3 coats of undiluted PVA are required and each coat must dry thoroughly before the next is applied.
Regards,
Dave Stevens.
