Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Hive London for this afternoon’s FA Trophy quarter-final with Halesowen Town.

I would like to extend my welcome wishes to the players, staff and supporters of our visitors this afternoon. It was frustrating to have Tuesday night’s game called off, we were all right up for the game and ready to go. However, I respect the referee’s decision and although it is a frustrating one, we will make sure we are ready when we meet Dagenham again. But now I have my full focus on today’s game and making sure that we are in the hat for the semi-final. Halesowen have had a great season and have already knocked out two teams from our league, so there will be absolutely no underestimating them. They will bring good numbers down and I am sure we will have a good backing, so I’m looking forward to a good cup atmosphere inside the stadium. We have been in really good form of late and the boys are all chomping at the bit to get out there, so I look forward to seeing us put in another strong performance. It is so good to have a big squad to choose from again and have those nice headaches! Everyone will

play their part in the run in and all the boys who aren’t perhaps starting will certainly be crucial to us during the next run of games. It’s been nice seeing a few of you this week and my office door is always open for fans to pop in for a chat. I really want us all to be together as the season approaches its climax, we have plenty to play for and your support will be crucial. But its full focus on each game as it comes.

So get behind us and I’m sure the lads will do

their utmost to get us into the last four!

Thanks for your support

#LetsBeeTogether

Darren

HistoryHalesowen Town is one of the oldest teams in the country and claims to have been formed in 1873 although without much certainty.

Local historian Norman Jones wrote “there is evidence which shows that for the first ten years of the team’s existence it was the James Grove Button Factory team and that it adopted the present name in the early 1880’s. The earliest records that the Football Association have on file relating to Halesowen Town F.C. are dated 1882……

When peacetime returned after World War II, the Club reformed. In season 1951/52 both Birmingham & Worcestershire Senior Cup Finals were reached. In front of a 6,000 crowd at Stourbridge, we lost in the Birmingham final to Brierley Hill

Alliance but triumphed over Hednesford in the Worcestershire final, played at Bromsgrove. The same season saw us suffer our worst ever post-war defeat when we travelled to Merthyr Tydfil in the Herefordshire Senior Cup and were soundly beaten 0-9.

1955 brought our first major achievement when we reached the FA Cup Round 1 but lost 2 – 4 at home to Hendon in front of a packed Grove. In March 1955, Ronnie Dugmore notched an incredible 7 goals when we won 10-0 at Dudley in a Birmingham League match. In August 1957, we achieved our highest post-war winning margin when we beat Coventry Amateurs 13-1 in the Birmingham Senior Cup.

The 1970’s brought a period of struggle for The Yeltz. Twice out of 3 successive seasons we finished bottom of the West Midlands League. At times, the only thing keeping us running was the effort of ‘Mr Halesowen Town’ - Harry Rudge. Before his untimely death in 1990, ‘H’ filled every role in the club at one time or other, including player, manager, groundsman, secretary and anything else you can think of.H

Then suddenly something strange happened - we got a decent team together and started winning things. Manager Paddy Page assembled a squad of promising youngsters, and in 1982-83 we had an unbelievable year. We won the West Midlands League for the first time, as well as winning the League Cup, but more importantly we reached the final of the FA Vase at Wembley narrowly losing 1-0 to VS Rugby.

Not to worry, two years later we were back at the home of football. This time there was no mistake, as we beat Fleetwood 3-1 in the greatest day in the history of the club. By the next year we were getting a bit blasé about the whole thing, as we once again won the Vase by beating Southall 3-0 in front of over 17,000 people, most of whom had come down from Halesowen.

From 1985 to 1991, Halesowen reached the 1st round of the FA Cup for 7 consecutive years. On 4 occasions we played professional teams, and each time we were unlucky to lose. SOUTHEND beat us 4-1, but were extremely flattered by that scoreline, breaking away in the last five minutes to clinch the game after we had been all over them in the second half. We lost 2-0 to BRENTFORD, again in a very even game. Against CARDIFF CITY, we lost 1-0 to a hotly disputed penalty and were by far the better team, and lost 2-1 to an excellent TRANMERE ROVERS side after taking the lead.

Season 2010/11 saw one of the poorest playing records in the Club’s history finishing the season in bottom place, scoring only 24 goals and conceding 107. Shortly after the season ended, the Club was taken over by businessman Steve Lynch. Under the new ownership, season 2011/12 brought an encouraging start with The Yeltz undefeated in the first 5 league games, including a 3-1 home win over eventual champions Bideford. However, September brought early FA Cup

exit at Rocester which was soon followed by a morale shattering 4-5 reverse at Wimborne, where a 4-1 lead was squandered in the last half-hour. An October FA Trophy loss at home to Romulus lead on to a bleak winter for Yeltz fans. In the autumn Steve Lynch had formed a management team to run the club on his behalf and under the Chairmanship of club stalwart Colin Brookes and Vice-Chairman John Russell, a lifelong Yeltz fan of 60 years. This brought fruition as the last 3 months of the season progressed, the club’s improved off-field organisation led to Manager Shaun Cunnington being able to strengthen his squad. Neil Barnfield served an impressive spell on loan from Leamington while striker Ben Haseley arrived from Heath Hayes and soon won fans over with 10 goals in 17 games. 2013/14 season kicked off with an away win at Lincoln, quickly followed by two successive home defeats within 7 days. All at Halesowen then couldn’t envisage what the rest of the season would bring. Our leading goal scorer from last season Ben Haseley missed 11 games due an eye injury, but on his return against Brigg scored twice. As the season progressed we climbed the league table and went top. This position we help until the final week, with Coalville close behind and a game in hand lost against Gesley, this meant our last game away at Belper was a must win game for us to be crowned league champions. Two goals from Ben Haseley ensured the 3 points that crowned us league champions and promoted to the premier league. The Peter Swales Challenge Trophy was added the following week, with a 3-1 win against Curzon Ashton.John Hill added to his squad two players with league experience, Neil Mackenzie and Iyseden Christie.

Fast forward to 2018 and following Steve Lynch’s FA imposed ban from all football activities Club President and ex Chairman Colin Brookes became the ultimate owner of the club with his daughter and chair Karen Brookes and Keith McKenna becoming Directors of the club. The Yeltz narrowly avoided relegation and for the 2018-19 season will be playing in the newly formed Evo-Stik South Premier Division Central.

In November 2018 the new management team of Rob Smith and his assistant Larry Chambers were appointed to replace John Hill and Matt Clarke, sadly the 2018-19 season saw relegation to step 4 for the Yeltz with Lee Hughes and Asa Charlton at the helm for the final few games, who were not to blame.

Paul Smith took over as manager in the summer of 2019 as he looks to get the Yeltz back to step 3 at the earliest opportunity.

SMITH JOINED THE YELTZ IN THE SPRING OF 2019 AFTER A SPELL AS MANAGER AT REDDITCH UNITED WHERE LAST SEASON HE MET THE CLUB’S REMIT OF SURVIVAL WHICH HE ACHIEVED COMFORTABLY.

Paul, who lives locally, started his Managerial Career with Alvechurch where he made more than 250 appearances as a player. Following this he moved to manage Studley before, in 2014, he joined Bromsgrove Sporting in what would prove to be his most successful spell as Manager.

He led the Rouslers to second place in Midlands League Division one. The following season saw more success, another second place was gained alongside two cup final appearances.

The next season, if it could be, was even better, Smith led the Rouslers to the League Championship and were unbeaten in the league all season and he was a game from Wembley as Bromsgrove Sporting lost in the semi-final of the FA Vase against Cleethorpes Town.

Smith left Bromsgrove in March 2018 and joined Highgate United for a while before joining Redditch United in September 2018.

NETHERLANDSTOUR 2020

April 1926, twenty six Barnet FC players met at Victoria Station to travel to Folkestone to catch the boat to Dordrecht in the Netherlands to play in a tournament they eventually won by beating Feyenoord 5-2 along the way.

April 2020, twenty four Barnet Walking Football Team players will meet at Stansted Airport to fly to Amsterdam and then onto Nijmegen in the Netherlands to play in our first European Walking Football Tournament. Our hosts, SV Juliana 31 Malden visited the Hive last year and spent an amazing few days with us, training and then drawing a competitive match 0-0 with Darren Currie handing out the medals.

We will be entering 3 teams into the tournament to face the likes of Genk from Belgium, Essen from Germany and many other top Dutch teams. We will have a free day where the players will have the chance to visit neighbouring Arnhem and its historical sites.

Matches will be played to Dutch Walking Football rules which differ from our FA rules, they have smaller training type goals with no goalkeepers being the main difference. It will be an experience but the main objective is to have fun and make new contacts to hopefully invite back to the wonderful Hive in the near future.

T HOW IT HAPPENEDThe Bees made the perfect start as Paul McCallum slid to touch home after Simeon Akinola’s strike was well saved by Matt Urwin. It was the perfect start for Darren Currie’s side as they led inside two minutes.

It could have been two just after as the ball flicked up to Dan Sweeney who forced a great stop out of Matt Urwin.

Akinola was next to go close as he flicked James Dunne’s well-taken free-kick into the gloves of Urwin. Up the other end, the hosts went close as Alex Newby was inches away from finding a teammate at the back post.

The hosts continued to up the ante midway through the half, but the Bees stood firm and limited the hosts to half chances.

Callum Reynolds did well to evert the biggest danger of the half as Alex Newby put in a wicked delivery, which our number four did brilliantly to turn behind

We went in ahead at the break and deservedly so after a commanding opening 45 minutes in the North-West.

The Bees handled the game very well in the opening stages of the second half and were inches away from doubling their lead, as Urwin made an outstanding

stop to tip Akinola’s free-kick onto the crossbar.

McCallum then got onto Vilhete’s cross on the follow-up, but his flying header from six yards out went agonisingly over the crossbar.

Sweeney then struck a venomous strike towards goal but it was superbly defended by Meppen-Walters as he bravely headed the strike behind for a corner kick.

Akinola linked up well with Sweeney and found himself in the box but fired over 10 yards from goal, the Bees dominating the game against the Magpies.

The Bees saw the game out professionally as the hosts looked to throw caution to the wind. Scott Loach wasn’t called into action at all to make a save of note.

Substitute Josh Walker had the last chance of the afternoon as he fired just wide from the edge of the box, but the Bees did more than enough to deservedly take all three points back to London.

On the performance

It’s never going to be pretty is it? To be fair, I’m going to give them credit before I start off because they tried to play the right way and it’s unfortunate to see them down there because the way they try to play football is the right way and they’re not actually bad. They made it a tough game. We had the perfect start which has probably been the opposite for us in previous games. With the experience we have and ability in the team, going 1-0 up definitely steady’s the ship. I wasn’t really tested today so credit to the lads who got a hold of the game. They did have some spells, but I think we managed it well.

On grinding out the result

If you look at the conditions, we were against the wind in the first half and to get the win behind you in the second half, with McCallum’s ability in the air, you’ve always got a good chance. Their ‘Keeper made one of the best saves we’ve seen this season to be fair to him. If that goes in its 2-0 and it could go on to be three of four. I think 1-0 is not a bad thing because if you can get over the line like that, then you would definitely take eight more of them before the end of the season.

On the quality in front of him

I think when we’re on it, you’re still going to let goals in, and teams are going to have spells where I’m busy but that’s my job. I think it starts from the front with McCallum now having that big presence and that’s no disrespect to Simeon or Josh because they’ve been excellent this season, but they need the help of McCallum as well with his experience and strength up there. It kind of gives us a bit of fear factor as well. Teams will now play us and think “ahh no, they’ve got McCallum”, it kind of gives us a bit of a one-up on them already.

On the rest of the season

We’ll take it one game at a time. We’re fortunate that we’ve got quite a few games in hand. It’s not going to be plain sailing

all the way. Dagenham have picked up, bringing in new players and a new manager. We’ve just got to take it one game at a time. We’ve lost to Solihull, but we bounced back today and if that’s the case for the rest of the season, if we win every other one we’re going to get into the playoffs. We’ve just got to have that consistency from now until May. In regard to the FA Trophy, I don’t want to say too much but it’s a team that everyone is going to expect us to beat but we need to be professional about it and get the job done and over the line.

On the fans

We’ve had great support. Whether there is 50 who travel or 200 who travel, to get any who brave this weather, it’s been horrific these last two or three weeks, whenever there is a bit of a setback, they are still there in numbers and that’s why we need to put these performances in. These people pay their money and they deserve at least a performance and they’re getting that now. Maybe not the way we want to play football but we’re getting the nitty-gritty and showing that desire. We’ve said all along if you’re showing that desire now then they go away happy.

Championship side Stoke City have cancelled the contract of midfielder Giannelli Imbula, despite having 18 months left on his contract. He became the clubs’ most expensive signing in January 2016, signing from FC Porto for £18.3 million. Born in Belgium, he played for France at Under 20 and Under 21 levels, before representing Democratic Republic of Congo at full international level. He started out his career at Guingamp, before moving to Marseille, initially playing in their B team before being promoted to their senior side. He would then spend half a season at the Portuguese side before moving to England. However, he would only play 28 times for the Potters, scoring twice. In 2017/18, he was loaned out to Toulouse, last season he was sent out to Rayo Vallecano before spending this season on loan at US Lecce in Italy. His spell in Staffordshire was littered with disciplinary issues both on and off of the pitch.

Having been in charge of the club as caretaker manager since the start of the year, Chesterfield have appointed John Pemberton as their permanent manager up until the end of the season. Former Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Oldham Athletic midfielder John Sheridan was sacked as manager on 2nd January, having been originally appointed as manager last January. He had guided the side to a 14th place in the National League last season, before leaving the club last month with the club third from bottom. Pemberton has struggled to turn around the form, with the side currently occupying 21st place in the league. Pemberton has also previously spent time managing the Spireites’ academy last season, before taking over as caretaker manager again after Martin Allan’s sacking.

Our local rivals Boreham Wood have signed Eastwood Town, Corby Town and Mansfield Town forward Matt Rhead on a short term contract, which runs up until the end of the season. The 35 year old was a free agent, having been released by National League South side Billericay in October, when the clubs’ former chairman Glenn Tamplin resigned from the club, despite the player having spent just two months at the club. Rhead played for Lincoln City between 2015 and 2019, making just shy of 200 appearances for the club, scoring on 49 occasions. Helping the side to two promotions, from the National League up to League 1. He is notable for being on the end of Joey Barton’s dive to try and get him sent off during Lincoln’s game against Burnley, in their run to the FA Cup quarter final back in 2017.

Wycombe Wanderers have this week announced that American businessman Rob Couhig has completed his takeover of the Buckinghamshire club. The 70 year old lawyer, who purchased a 75% stake of the club from the Wycombe Wanderers Trust, is set to become the chairman of the club, with his wife Missy and his nephew Pete also going to join the clubs’ board. The remaining 25% of the club is also to be retained by the Trust, with previous chairman Trevor Stroud retaining a seat on the board. Couhig is set to invest £2.2 million into repaying clubs debts and to make a further £1 million available to the club, with £150,000 going towards a 15 year lease on their Adams Park Stadium. The side are currently third in League 1, just one point off of the top two places.

Staines Town have parted company with manager Martin Kuhl after less than three months in charge. The former Birmingham City, Portsmouth and Derby County midfielder initially joined the club in December, when he replaced then interim manager Mahrez Bettache, but the former Aldershot Town and Reading caretaker manager has failed to turn around the sides’ fortunes, losing nine out of their eleven league games played in that time, drawing the remaining two. His only victory with the club came in the Middlesex Senior Cup, when they beat Barnet here at the Hive. The side currently sit in 19th place in the BetVictor Isthmian League Division 1 South Central, having been relegated from the Southern League Premier Division South last season, having played in the Conference South as recently as 2015.

Championship side Barnsley have received a fine believed to be £20,000 and have also been ordered to implement a plan of action after some of their fans targeted Stoke City player James McClean with sectarian abuse. The incident happened in the game between the two clubs on 9th November, when the Potters won 4-2 at Oakwell, with the abuse being reported to the referee by the player on the 32nd minute. This was then reported to the fourth official, coaches from both clubs and club stewards, with video footage of the match being reviewed later, showing a “significant number of individuals” chanting the abuse. Barnsley have also been criticised for not doing anything about preventing the chanting before the game started.

Address : The Hive London, HA8 6AG

From: Carla Devine

Luckily going home to Leeds for reading week perfectly coincided with a northern away day. This was our first trip to Chorley and me, my parents and brother left Leeds around midday as we decided to take the scenic route over the Pennines – a trip we haven’t got to do so much this season. We arrived in Chorley around 2pm finding parking near the ground. I got my usual programme and badge in their shop stocked with lots of interesting items then we headed in through the turnstiles. We went straight to get some lunch and as northerners were overjoyed by their choice of butter pies, pie barms and hot vimto! After we got our lunch we headed down to the opposite end of the ground to watch the team warm up in the wind. Later on, the teams came out for kick off and a minute’s applause was held in memory of the loss of a Chorley legend and a lifetime fan. The coin toss was done and the teams decided to switch ends so most fans decided to do this too. Just as we were arriving down the other end, Paul McCallum scored yet again to put us one ahead, doing well to get it in after Akinola’s initial shot was saved. After this, we looked positive with another big chance on 9 minutes when their goalie did well to keep Sweeney’s header out. The first half settled down a bit and no more goals came, although Sweeney had another very impressive effort 15 minutes before half time. We switched ends again getting cuppas on our way round to keep us warm for the second half. We started the second half strongly and our best chance came on 58 minutes when we got a free kick on the edge of the box. Akinola took a wonderful shot but somehow their keeper did a great job and tipped it onto the bar. Just 8 minutes later, the situation was replicated but this time round Chorley did a decent job of defending it. We carried on attacking bringing Walker on in the hope of finding another goal and on 92 minutes we came so close when Walker’s shot went just wide of the post. But the game finished 1-0 to us. Just as the rain started we rushed back to the car and set off back to Leeds taking the M62 this time. Unfortunately for me, being back in Leeds by 6:30pm gave my Mum the perfect excuse to drag us around multiple supermarkets meaning I wasn’t actually back on my sofa till nearer 8pm! Chorley was a lovely day out at such a welcoming club and it was brilliant to pick up another 3 points.
