WELCOME TO THE 2012-2013 BARNABAS FUND GIFT CATALOGUE

    Dear Christian friend,

In the following pages you will find many

options for gifts large and small that you,

your small group or your church can make

to support persecuted Christians in many

parts of the world. The gifts listed on each

page are examples of what can be bought

with donations of specific amounts made to

    designated projects.

In the past year Barnabas Fund has

supported such projects in nearly 60

different countries. Our funding for them is

made possible only by the commitment and

generosity of our supporters, whose prayers

and gifts make such a difference to our

suffering brothers and sisters. Please give

whatever you can, and please encourage

others in your congregation or fellowship to do

    the same.

Twelve ways to bring hope and aid

The catalogue highlights twelve key areas

    in which Barnabas Fund strengthens

members of our Christian family who endure

    discrimination, harassment and violence

because of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

These range from relief for the Christian

victims of natural disasters to the provisionof basic needs such as food, water and

medicine; from training and support for church

leaders to the funding of Christian resources

and church buildings; from the sponsoring of

Christian school-children to start-up costs for

small businesses and help for converts and

    victims of violence.

In all these ways God can graciously use yourgift to transform the lives of Christians living

under pressure and where churches struggle

    to grow or even survive.

    Single and regular gifts

Single one-off gifts are an invaluable

means of supporting vital ministries while

also providing a great alternative present for

your loved ones. Why not buy your Christian

friends Barnabas Gifts for Christmas this

    year?

Regular gifts (such as a Direct Debit in the

UK) help us to minimise our overheads and

maximise the amounts we send to support

needy Christians. They also make it easier for

us both to respond quickly to new and urgent

requests and to plan ahead for the longer

    term.

    Gift card

If you choose to support a project as analternative gift, we will supply you with a

delightful thank-you card, which you can

send to the person on whose behalf you have

made the donation. Please turn to page iv of

the pull-out gift form for further details.

The Bible calls us to help everyone, but

especially our brothers and sisters in Christ

(Galatians 6:10, emphasis added). Thiscatalogue offers us an opportunity to fulfil the

especially part of this verse. Please give

generously, and please also pray as you read.

    Sustaining Christianswhen disaster

    strikes

The Sahel region of Africahas recently been strickenby another severe drought andresulting food shortages. Insome places the price of basicfoodstuffs has doubled or even

trebled, and some Christianshave resorted to begging oreating leaves. Barnabas Fundhas provided rice and grain forhungry Christians in Mali andNiger.

When disaster strikes anarea where Christians are

in a minority, they can oftenreceive less aid than othersor be passed over altogether. In these contexts Barnabasseeks to ensure that they sufferno worse than the majoritypopulation. We provide food, medicines and shelter to meettheir immediate needs, and

    longer-term help to rebuild theirlives.

Among many other reliefprojects in 2011-12, Barnabashas provided emergencyaid to Christians displacedby devastating floods in SriLanka. We have also rebuilt

houses and supplied seed andfertiliser for Christians wholost everything in the Pakistanfloods of 2010 and 2011.

    in Syria

Eighteen months ago aChristian family of fivewas living peaceably in Homswith both parents earning anincome in the city. But thenrebel fighters threatened them

with death, took over theirhome and looted or destroyedtheir furniture. The family losttheir means of income and arenow struggling to make endsmeet, having fled to a villagenear Homs where they areliving in a small unfurnishedapartment.

Tens of thousands of Christiansin Syria have found themselvesin a similar or worse plight asthe country has descendedinto chaos and civil war.Threats or violence, oftenspecifically against Christians, have caused them to flee their

homes, and they are nowcaught up in a growing crisisof homelessness and poverty. Many are camping out in parksin the open air or sleepingtemporarily in schools andchurch halls.

    Barnabas Fund is providing

thousands of needy Christianfamilies in Syria with food, medicine, money for rent andother essentials through localchurches and ministries.

The help we are gettingfrom Barnabas is likean ointment on our wounds.Bashir, an impoverishedChristian in Pakistan, receivesa regular food package through

Barnabas Fund. It means hecan save a little money to paythe medical bills for his sickwife and has enabled him tosend his son to school andnow college.

Barnabas provides food fortens of thousands of Christians

who are trapped in povertyas a result of discriminationor persecution. We have fedfamilies in Egypt for manyyears, and recently we haveextended our programme tosome who have been badlyaffected by the revolution andits aftermath. We also have a

    long-term feeding project inPakistan.

Barnabas also helps those whoare threatened or displacedby anti-Christian violence. We provide food for IraqiChristians, both in Iraq andrefugees in neighbouring

countries. The eruption ofcivil war in Syria has drivenlarge numbers of vulnerableChristians from their homes. So we have now expanded ourfeeding programmes for IraqiChristians in Syria to includeneedy Syrian Christiansthroughout the country. (See

AChristian mother in NorthAfrica is amazed how hertwo children have changedsince they started attending aChristian nursery, funded byBarnabas. The youngsters now

share their toys, pray for oneanother and dream of beinglike David and Gideon, heroesfrom the Bible whose storiesthey hear at the nursery. Allthe Christian parents of the20 under-fours are extremelygrateful that their children canlearn about their Christian

faith in a loving environmentin a country where 99% of thepopulation is Muslim.

Christian children going tomainstream schools in areaswhere the majority of peopleare hostile to their faith willoften become fearful and

withdrawn because theyexperience discrimination, pressure to convert, andsometimes even physicalviolence because of their faith.Changing to a Christian schoolcan change their world around;many regain their confidenceand start to feel a lot more

happy and relaxed. In the long-term it can mean that they canbreak free from the cycle ofpoverty and help build up theirChristian community. Thanksto Barnabas Fund over 7,000Christian children can attendChristian schools.

Many young Christians inEgypt struggle to find workbecause of the discriminationagainst them. Increasedviolence against Christianssince the Arab Spring has

also made it more difficult forChristians to travel to their

jobs, especially for Christianwomen. At a sewing trainingcentre in an impoverishedChristian area of EgyptChristian girls are acquiringtailoring skills with support fromBarnabas Fund. These will

enable them to make productsthat can then be sold to earnan income.

Livestock is another simpleand effective way to provideChristians with a meansof income. Last year 150Christian families in Pakistan

received two goats per family. In Niger around 340 goatswere given to Christians.

Christians in many countriesexperience discrimination inemployment. Some careers areclosed to them; they may bepassed over for promotion or

be able to secure only the mostmenial and badly-paid jobs.Barnabas Fund helps thembecome self-sufficient throughtraining and the provision ofstart-up costs or equipmentand materials. In this waytheir suffering is alleviatedand their Christian witness is

strengthened. Our support canalso help them build up theirlocal church.

Aministry supported byBarnabas Fund providespractical and spiritual helpfor converts in a Muslim-majority area of Ugandawhere many Muslims are

Christian converts, especiallythose who leave Islam to followChrist, often face persecutionfrom their families andcommunities, and sometimesfrom the authorities too. Theymay lose their spouses andchildren, their jobs and their

homes; frequently they sufferthreats and violence; and theycan be thrown into prison orforced to flee abroad. Someare even killed.

Our Convert Fund provides avariety of support for converts, including safe accommodation,

skills training, small businessstart-up costs, education anddiscipleship training. In thepast year we also helped withthe medical expenses of aUgandan pastor, a convertfrom Islam, who was badlyinjured in an acid attack.

Earlier this year 300 housechurch leaders in Uzbekistan

attended a leadershiptraining session supportedby Barnabas Fund, andanother 42 Christians activein church ministry graduatedfrom a nine-month Bibleschool. The school remainedundetected by the authoritiesbecause two people stood

guard with a portable radiotransmitter during classes;the teachers were alerted ifanyone walked by.

Barnabas Fund recognisesthat training leaders is one ofthe best ways to strengthenthe persecuted Church. This

is why Barnabas supportedleadership training forchurch leaders and Christianworkers in 21 countries lastyear. This is given at manylevels, from basic coursesto post-graduate. We alsoprovide discipleship trainingto converts from other

    religions.

    Supportingministry in

    places o hardship

Why do you look sohappy? people oftenask a Christian family living ina rural, mainly Muslim villageof Indonesia. They answer thatit is because they have Jesus.

The family are part of a 30-40member congregation, mostof whom converted from Islamafter an evangelist couple, with support from BarnabasFund, planted a churchthere several years ago.

A total of 38 church planting

couples were enabled withhelp from Barnabas to startup churches around thesame time in Muslim-majorityareas of Indonesia. Theirbeginnings were very humble:most of the pastors startedleading church services intheir simple homes and tried

to build up relationshipswith an often hostile andresistant Muslim community.

Around the world BarnabasFund is contributing to theliving costs of hundreds ofpastors, evangelists andchurch-planters who are

serving in areas whereChristians are in a minorityand suffer harassment andpersecution. Ministering intheir homeland or amongtheir own people groups, theyare persevering in serviceto the Lord in contexts ofhardship and hostility.

The people are veryexcited. We traineda local water team to beresponsible for maintenance, cost sharing and promotinghygiene regarding drinking

water, said a projectcoordinator in South Sudanafter a borehole was drilledthere with support fromBarnabas.

Having a communal waterwell dug in their village, orreceiving water connections

in their homes, can makean enormous difference inthe lives of poverty-strickenChristians who are living as adespised minority. It can saveChristian women and girls inrural Egypt and in sub-Saharancountries hours of walking, often in dangerous conditions,

hauling and carrying heavyloads back to their homes fordaily household tasks. It alsobrings them clean, disease-free drinking water.

The lives of some convertsfrom Islam to Christianity inCentral and South Asia are

threatened because they aredenied access to water. Theyare deliberately blocked fromthe communal wells by theirMuslim neighbours. Havingwells dug on their propertiesmeans that they can continueliving there.

    Healing orpersecuted

    believers

This was the first time that Christian refugeescould get this type of servicewith all the doctors beingChristian and the service beingfree of charge and provided

with compassion and love. In2011 a Christian medical teamsupported by Barnabas ran aweek-long clinic in Turkey forpoor and needy Christians, mostly refugees. Heartdisease, diabetes and chestproblems were among theillnesses treated.

Christians trapped in povertyas a result of oppression anddiscrimination, or forced fromtheir homes by persecution, often cannot afford to see adoctor, buy medicine or payfor treatment. Barnabas Fundhelps to provide affordable

medical care for them, both bypaying medical expenses forindividuals and by sponsoringclinics and hospitals thatsupply their services free or atvery low cost.

In 2011-12 our medical projectshave included surgery for

Christian victims of violencein Egypt and the provision ofan ante-natal care room for aChristian primary health unit inSouth Sudan.

    and mission

We are very happy toreceive this blessingand all of us could comeand worship our living God.Weekly service will enrichour spiritual development

and encourage each other. With these words a pastor inBangladesh gave thanks fora new church building in hisvillage, built with support fromBarnabas Fund. Previouschurch buildings had beendestroyed by a Muslim mob.

In countries such asBangladesh where Christiansare very poor, or placeswhere they face repressiverestrictions, they may beunable to buy, build, repair orextend church buildings. Thosethey have may be destroyedby violence or forcibly

closed, and they may beprohibited by law from meetingelsewhere. The provision ofa building not only enhancestheir worship, ministry andmission; it can also bringthem respect and dignity.

    In 2011-12 Barnabas has

funded the construction ofnew churches in Sri Lankaafter the original buildingswere destroyed in the civil war, supplied a heating system for achurch in Kyrgyzstan to makeit fully useable in the bitterwinters, contributed to buildingwork for a new church centre in

    resources

The pastors are thrilledthat these Bibles arebeing printed, and are highlyanticipating their arrival intoBurma, reported a Barnabaspartner early this year just

before a truck full of LhaovoBibles reached a group ofchurch leaders. It was thefirst time that Christians fromthe Lhaovo minority in Burma(Myanmar) could read the Biblein their own language andunique writing system. Manyhad gone without a Bible of any

kind for a long time after theBurmese army had destroyedand burned down their homes.

Christians experiencingviolence, poverty andoppression for their faith areperhaps in even greater needof Christian resources than

Christians in the West; goodChristian literature and othermedia can help them makesense of the suffering theyendure for their faith andencourage and strengthenthem in their walk with theLord. Sadly, many do nothave ready access to such

resources. This is whyBarnabas actively supportsthe translating, printing anddistributing of Bibles andother Christian literature, and the production of DVDs,documentaries and televisionand radio programmes forpersecuted Christians.

    ABOUT BARNABAS FUND

As we have opportunity, let us do goodto all people, especially to those who

belong to the family of believers.Galatians 6:10, NIVemphasis added

As part of the family of God, Barnabas Fund stands with our Christian brothers and sisters

around the world, including the West, where they suffer discrimination, oppression or persecution

as a result of their faith. In this way we witness to the love of Christ and build His Kingdom.

We believe in the clear Biblical teaching that Christians should treat all people of all religions

and none with love and compassion, even those who seek to persecute them. We carry out our

vision and purpose accordingly, but we will not compromise what we believe the Word of God

    teaches.

1.We encourage prayer for the persecuted Church by providing comprehensive

    prayer materials.

We believe in the power of prayer to change peoples lives and circumstances,

either through grace to endure or through deliverance from suffering.

2.We channel moneyfromChristians throughChristians to Christians. Donationsfrom individual Christians and churches are forwarded to local ministries and

Christian organisations in contexts of persecution, mainly in Muslim-majority

environments, to bring about practical and spiritual transformation in the lives of

    suffering believers.

We fund projects that have been developed by local Christians in their own

communities, countries or regions. Thus we act as equal partners with the

persecuted Church, whose leaders often help to shape our overall direction.

3.We tell the untold story about the plight of persecuted Christians and speak out

on their behalf, making their needs known to Christians around the world and to

    governments and international bodies.

We seek to tackle persecution at its root by making known the aspects of religious

and secular ideologies that result in injustice and oppression of Christians and

others. We also equip Christians in the West to meet the challenge that other

religions pose to the Church, its mission and society.

    Commendations

I have followed the work of Barnabas Fund formany years and heartily recommend their vision ofbringing hope and practical aid to Christians underpersecution around the world. Barnabas Fund hasplayed a key role in bringing home to Christians inBritain the reality of life for brothers and sisters in

many other countries. In so doing, Barnabas Fundencourages informed prayer and channels aidto where it is desperately needed. I have alwaysbeen deeply impressed by the calibre of researchwhich underpins Barnabas Funds advocacy andensures the appropriateness of the aid it provides. Also, from my own experience of working withpersecuted Christians in many places, I knowthat their priority request is always for prayer

and I greatly value this emphasis in the work ofBarnabas Fund.Baroness Caroline Cox

I wish to warmly commend the strategy of (the)Barnabas Fund in providing support for Christiansthrough support of local projects. While others

work through the organs of state and thus areinfluenced by the policy of the state in which theaid is given, Barnabas works by supporting groupsalready working on the ground which enablesthese groups close to the needy to provide the aidwhere it is really needed and is delivered by thoseintimately acquainted with the needs and positionof those whom Barnabas and their supporters feelshould be helped.

Lord Mackay of Clashfern K.T., P.C.

Barnabas Fund is a wonderful gift to the Church, keeping us informed about the persecuted Church

whilst challenging us to come to the aid of thosewho are suffering. It has my wholehearted support.

An increasing number of suffering and persecutedChristians around the world need a voice to speak

The ministry of Barnabas Fund to the persecutedChurch is a Biblical imperative. Barnabas visiblydemonstrate the very heart of the Gospel, boldlyventuring into places where Christians suffergreatly; speaking, working and making real thelove and compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is a vital ministry which I wholeheartedlysupport.Pastor Emmanuel Mbakwe, National Leader,
